People in the notes of my post about Tesla removing the gear selectors from its new cars, asking how that's even legal, clearly have no idea just how incompetent and slow-paced the NHTSA is.
Halogen headlights weren't legal until 1979.
Composite headlights (the uniquely designed ones that aren't the old-school circle or square ones you see on older cars) weren't legal until 1984.
Adaptive High Beams (Matrix Headlights) were only recently legalized, in 2022; and the regulations and testing procedures in order to approve them are so haphazard and over-complicated compared to Europe's that not a single automaker has even made them available.
Side Curtain airbags still are not mandated in the United States.
Turn Signals can be red in the U.S., as opposed to the statistically safer amber which is mandatory in Europe.
Making that worse, those red turn signals are allowed to share lamps with the brake lights. This means if you have your turn signal on, 1/3 of your brake lights can’t do their job because they're too busy doing another job.
There is no law in the United States dictating that an electric car must put on its brake lights when Regen braking. In fact, the law specifically states that only the friction brakes are required to activate brake lights. You can bring a Hyundai Ioniq 5 & 6, Kia EV6, Genesis GV60, and many other EVs to a rapid, complete stop without ever activating the brake lights.
Early model Chevrolet Bolt EVs and some Mercedes-Benz EVs will activate the brake lights appropriately when slowing down, but will deactivate their brake lights once they've come to a complete stop, allowing the car to sit at a standstill in the road without any indicator that it isn't traveling at the same speed as you are.
It's completely up to the automaker to decide how (or even if) to implement regen brake lighting. EVs and Hybrids have been around since the late 1990s and this still hasn't changed.
The US government STILL only evaluates a vehicles crash safety by crash testing it at 35 mph into a flat wall and t-boning it with a barrier representing a 3,000 lb sedan. They don't do an offset frontal test or a truck-barrier side test like the IIHS has been doing for private insurance companies for over a decade.
The NHTSA performs ZERO pedestrian crash safety tests like EuroNCAP does.
Oh, and on the topic of gear selectors, those aren't regulated at all. Here are some examples from modern cars, both electric and not:
BMW i3 & Nissan LEAF (Electric):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Toyota Prius (Hybrid) & Honda Clarity (Plug-in Hybrid):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
RAM 1500 & Cadillac Escalade (Gasoline):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The automotive rules of the American government are pure chaos, and that’s if they're even there at all. If you're seriously asking how Tesla can allow a car to select reverse on its own, and then put the manual override in the touch screen, I mean, that's just scratching the surface.
If you wanna learn more, Technology Connections on YouTube has some great videos on the Turn Signal issue, the EV Regen brake light issue, and the history of the headlight regulations. I highly recommend you check them out because it truly puts into perspective just how awful the NHTSA is at doing its one job: keeping safety standards up-to-date.

Excerpt from this story from EcoWatch:
Sunrun, a solar company, and Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE), the largest utility provider in Maryland, have launched a pilot program for a bidirectional power plant fueled by solar energy and EV technology.
The pilot, which involves three households, allows users to draw energy from a Ford F-150 Lightning electric truck when paired with the Ford Charge Station Pro and Home Integration System sold by Sunrun. This setup lets the household utilize energy from the EV during peak energy demand, Smart Energy International reported.
The pilot program is the first vehicle-to-home power plant in the U.S. and was funded with grants from the U.S. Department of Energy.
“This program is a significant proof of concept — no other market player has done this — and the goal is to expand these programs all around the country,” Sunrun CEO Mary Powell said in a press release. “This exciting partnership lays the foundation for the power grid of the future where electric vehicle owners can contribute to grid resiliency and utility price stability for everyone. The summer heat can be especially stressful on our power grid, which is why proving the use of stored energy in electric vehicles for capacity is so important.”
The process works by sending energy from the EV batteries to the homes, allowing the vehicle batteries to operate as energy storage. This can complement solar energy sources as well as reduce demand on Maryland’s power grids during peak times. The bidirectional power provided through the charging station can power homes for up to 10 days in the event of an outage, Sunrun said.
For the pilot program, the trucks share energy from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays from June 1 to September 30. The pilot is offering an estimated $800 to participants.
Currently, there are only a limited number of EV models that offer the bidirectional charging feature, including the Nissan Leaf, the 2024 Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 models from Hyundai, Kia’s EV6, EV9 and Niro EV, and the Ford F-150 Lightning, Cars.com reported.
More vehicles are expected to introduce bidirectional charging in the coming years, including all GM and Tesla EV models, CNET reported.
Sunrun and BGE are planning to expand the program after monitoring the pilot and will offer incentives for F-150 Lightning owners to join, helping increase grid resilience. The program could also help contribute toward Maryland’s goal to reach net-zero emissions by 2045 and achieve 100% clean electricity by 2035.

Characters: Reader Pairings: Jake Jensen x Reader Word count: 611 Type: holiday flavored angst Warning: 18+. Minors DNI. No real warnings for this one. One F-bomb and momentarily anxiety ridden moments.
Summary: takes place roughly 5 years before Blinded by the Fog timeline. Reader dealing with Jake's absence.
Author's Note: As I've been struggling with Chapter 6 of BBtF, I saw this post of December prompts from @creativepromptsforwriting and am attempting to make them mostly Jake & Reader based so I get more of a feel for them to help Reader with her grief. And thank you to @adulting-sucks for her continued support, none of these would be done with out you.
Chapters and drabbles are slow in coming because of ridiculous travel due to ridiculous weather here in the US. Hopefully I will start posting on a more regular basis after i return to my own dwelling in early January. <3

Dressed in your festive pajamas, you sat curled on one end of the couch, a blanket thrown over your legs.  The only light in the room is the soft glow of your Christmas tree in the corner of your living room.  It was creeping up towards midnight on Christmas Eve and you were trying to be as festive as possible.  But you simply were not feeling it this year.  You had your red and green PJs on, you had a cup of hot chocolate filled with marshmallows cooling on the coffee table, you had a plate of sugar cookies in the shape of snowmen next to it with only one missing its head, you had just turned off your favorite version of the Christmas Carol....
You were trying.  Fuck you were trying.  But you were thousands of miles from your loved ones  and even more miles from your husband.  He was God only knows where in the world.  He had been gone on a mission for the past 5 months, and you hadn’t heard anything from him or any of the other members of his team in that time.  You assumed they were still alive. You assumed the Army would have let you know if they weren't.  Unless the Army didn't even know if they were alive.
 Well fuck.....
 Merry Fucking Christmas, self.
That’s a great train of thought to go spiraling through.  That Jake, Clay and the others were MIA, awesome, great, perfect.  Or even better KIA.
The lights on the tree danced and blurred as tears filled your eyes.  You couldn't do this, you couldn't handle this.  You should have gotten on the plane when your friend back home begged you to come visit instead of sitting alone in the home you shared with Jake.  You wondered if you could get a plane ticket to New Hampshire in the next few hours.  Surely there was an empty seat, even a middle one, on a flight headed north.  Any flight headed north   Even if you couldn't get to New Hampshire, you could rent a car in Boston and drive up within a few hours.  Fuck you'd drive up from New York if you had to.
Yeah this sounded like a good plan.  Getting up from your seat you moved towards your bedroom to get your phone.  You had plugged it in and put it on silent hours ago, unable to take the well wishes from friends.
Before you left the room though, a noise stopped you.  It was coming from outside.  You heard the unmistakable noise of boots on your front porch.  What the hell?  You suddenly wished you had held onto your phone as your heart started to thunder in your chest.  The sound of your front door’s handle being turned threw a new thought into your brain- do you go for your door gun or do you go for your phone?  Shit you couldn't believe you left your phone all the way on the other end of the house, that was stupid of you, even if your mental health couldn't take the well meaning comments from friends.
A key slid into the lock, the handle turning again, this time the door silently opening. This wasn’t happening.  Someone was breaking into your house, on Christmas Eve.  This is how you were going to die, and no one would look for you until they missed you at work, which you were not due back to until after New Years.   This was your fate.  Die alone with no one giving a shit.
Merry fucking Christmas to me.
A booted foot appeared in the crack, the toe covered in snow you didn't even know had fallen outside. And a familiar voice cried out “Ho, ho, ho.”

Kia EV9 !

TL; DR: He bricked the Cybertruck but the F-150 lived
youtube
I saw an edit of this video on here earlier and immediately had to go watch it for myself. It's a pretty good video and this guy has enough wild-eyed crazy in him that watching him destroy a vehicle is very entertaining.
The gist of the video is that he pits the Cybertruck against an F-150 in an extreme durability test. Obviously, this is for entertainment mostly and not necessarily a product review, so I felt compelled to add come context to the "flaws" and flaws the vehicles demonstrate.
Disclaimer: I am not a mechanic or an automotive engineer. I do have enough knowledge, however, to add some information to what the video shows. That said, let's go.
Rolling off the flatbed truck without ramps.
The major difference between combustion/"regular" and electric vehicles is not necessarily what fuel they use, but how the engine is composed.
Combustion engines feed fuel into into pistons which allow in a small amount of air in to combine with the ignition flame to begin and maintain the combustion process. These pistons then compress, driving the pressure into the rest of the engine and using the force to create motion. This is why a vehicle, if left in neutral with the brakes off, will drift forward - if the engine is running, combustion is taking place and that forward momentum will be used. These pistons are what mark out a vehicle's V classication - eg. V-4, V-6 and V-8. This V number represents how many of these pistons there are and therefore how much power they can output. V-4s are usually economy cars, mini vans or very small SUVs (think a Ford Fiesta, a Honda Odyssey or a Honda CR-V). V-6s are for more robust cars, SUVs, and light pickup trucks (think a Chrysler 300, a Kia Sorento or a Toyota Tundra). V-8s are the strongest type, and can be put towards speed or hauling, depending on thr design of the vehicle. A Ford Escape, for example, is very fast for an SUV because it is built light and spacious - intended to carry its load inside the body of the vehicle. A Chevrolet Silverado, by comparison, is meant to haul and puts its strength into pulling and torque instead of speed.
Due to the fact that combustion engines have to generate their own energy through the combustion process, these engines are very reliant on "hardware" - ei. physical parts that operate based on physical imput and interaction. The gearbox in your transmission, for example, is made up of actual gears that have to turn and lock into place for the transmission to turn and thus power the axels which spin the wheels.
Electric vehicles have none of this. Since they have no power generation requirement, that space is taken up by batteries and motherboards which fulfil all the roles of various hardware. Why would you need a transmission to turn when the motherboard can command the axels to turn on its own? The trade off is that EVs almost exclusively run on "software" - ei. the onboard computer. This means that their undercarriage has no dangling parts to get snagged or damaged like a CV.
Neither of these things are inherently bad. On one hand, EVs have nothing down there to snag when it rolls off the back of the flatbed. Downside, the high toxic, flammable and delicate batteries are in the undercarriage. Damaged motherboards are also much harder and trickier to replace and repair. CVs have a vulnerable undercarriage, but they're easy parts to replace or can be fixed quickly. Most of the undercarriage of a CV is also not flammable - it's just running hardware and exhaust.
Suspension and ride comfortability.
Suspension refers to the metal coils and hydraulics that take and displace the impact from tires hitting and running over things. Suspension exists on a spectrum from "soft" to "hard", and most vehicles fall somewhere in the middle.
"Soft" suspension is meant for ride comfort - the suspension coil is kept less tense and absorbs more impact, keeping the ride more level and smooth. This is common in luxury cars or brands like Cadillac or Lexus. The downside of this is that it wears your suspension down much faster. They need to be replaced more frequently and it can also be harder on the axels, depending on what you do with it. Speed bumps, if taken unevenly, really fuck soft suspension.
"Hard" suspension is meant for durability - the suspension coil is kept very tense and rigid, displacing the impact more into the body of the vehicle and back into the ground. This makes the ride a lot rockier, but the vehicle itself a lot more stable. Most vehicles with 4 Wheel Drive or offroading capability lean towards hard suspension to preserve the vehicle's integrity and power output.
In the video, the Cybertruck clearly has softer suspension than the hard suspension F-150. This is why the Ford had a rockier ride but the phone didn't go flying when they landed. The Ford is much more resistant to hard impact than the Cybertruck.
Towing and frame construction.
Towing capacity is in part from the horsepower put out by the engine, but also by the integrity of the frame.
Most vehicle's frames are one solid aluminum skeleton, sometimes welded in places but often cast all at once. Trucks, specifically, usually use the "unibody" design with a built-in trailer hitch. This allows the entirety of the frame to carry the weight of the towed object as it would if it were in the bed of the truck. This is what the Ford is doing when it pulls the Cybertruck out of the mud - the entirety of the body is being used to pull.
The Cybertruck's hitch, in contrast, is attached only to the bumpers and not the frame of the vehicle. The bumper was attached to the frame, however, and when it tore off, it caused structural damage to the frame.
Frame damage is critical damage. It destabilizes the entire structure and can actually tear the vehicle apart from within. That metal needs to be reinforced or wholly replaced to be servicable again.
Aluminum vs steel frame.
Most trucks have aluminum frames ans for good reason.
Aluminum has the highest strength to weight ratio second only to titanium, meaning that for how light it is, it is incredibly strong. An F-150 made of aluminum is thousands of pounds lighter than one made of steel and is more durable.
Steel also goes brittle in the cold faster than aluminum, meaning it is more prone to tearing or rending under force when its's cold. (There's a test to determine this called the Charpy Test - go look them up, they're really cool.) Aluminum also rusts slower and less catastrophically than steel. You can see how this would be in issue in the cold or if your vehicle is left outside regularly.
Fibre glass vs steel body.
In the C-4 test, it blew a hole right through the F-150, because obviously. The Cybertruck remained intact, but jammed the door. This is more damning for the Cybertruck than the Ford.
The Ford is designed with safety in mind. The body of the truck is meant to take the impact in the event of a crash instead if the occupants. These manifest as "crumple zones", where the vehicle will let itself be crushed instead of the passengers. Fibre glass is very good at that, so that's what most exterior bodies are made from.
Crucially, they are also intended to be destroyable by first responders. A firefighter responding to a crash can cut through the door of that Ford with a saw pretty easily and extract the occupants. Alternatively, an occupant can force the doors open from the inside too, if necessary.
The Cybertruck is made of sheet steel and therefore much harder to cut through than fibre glass. The impact also jams the door lock, making it impossible to open from the inside. If your truck is on fire after an accident, you better hope the other door still works or you're dying in there. On that note ...
Slamming the doors and breakable windows.
The integrity of the Cybertruck's interior is a joke. What the actual fuck is that. Granted, neither of these vehicles are meant to be slammed like that, but the Ford's doors held together very well in comparison.
That means that even small impacts like slamming the door are being transferred into all the soft, squishy parts of the inside of the Cybertruck whereas the Ford is dispersing it immediately.
He calls out Ford's windows for cracking during this test, but again, that's an intentional design.
You'll notice he was able to grab and wiggle the glass without it breaking apart. That's because the glass is also, like the crumple zones, intended to take an impact on behalf of the occupant. It is designed to crack and spiderweb out BUT NOT shatter. Shattering glass can cause a lot of harm, especially to the eyes and face. Instead, even if it does break apart, it stays in larger chunks.
The Cybertruck, by contrast, does not spiderweb nearly as efficiently as the Ford and does, in fact, shatter in the driver's side window when they're throwing weights at it. It doesn't disperse the impact, it shatters under pressure (despite putting up with a lot of abuse) and it loses integrity in localized spots quite quickly.
If you're in a crash, the Ford's windows won't rupture your eyes with tiny razors.
Pulling strips off the Cybertruck.
This got me. This was the worst part.
When he pulls the strips off the top edge of the body, over the doors, you'll notice that it was glued on.
GLUED.
You do not glue metal together. You weld, rivet or bracket metal to itself (preferably like metal to like metal). Metal is usually not a porous surface, meaning it has nothing for the glue to hold onto. Do you have any idea how dangerous this barely-adhered strip of sheet metal would be if it flew off in a car crash? It's a huge metal boomerang - it's gonna kill someone. Temu-ass materials indeed.
How the fuck do you half-ass something so hard that you start whole-ass fucking it up? Lawnmowers have better structural and safety integrity.
The uh, the Ford doesn't have glued on body parts. If you were wondering.
Drive by wire and bricking.
Drive by wire is a cool invention and I'm sure it's pretty useful. In EVs, it cuts further down on weight and mades the steering more responsive.
In my opinion, though, it's a hazard on its own.
In CVs, the wheels are controlled by your steering column, which is attached to your wheel. The operation of the wheel is aided by hydraulic systems which assist you in the actual effort of turning the wheels. When your engine dies or the steering assistants take a hit, you can still control the vehicle directly (though it is much harder).
Drive by wire without a backup steering column (like the Cybertruck has) means that if the vehicle dies while you're in motion, you have no control over the vehicle at all anymore. You're fucked. God forbid your truck bricks because you drove though a puddle on the highway and you lose control entirely.
On that note too, I am firmly of the belief that none of your driving essentials should be controlled via screen. Physical buttons and shifters allow physical feedback, letting the driver keep their eyes on the road and move by muscle memory and touch alone. Touch screens are hazardous to the driver and those around them by forcing them to look at what they're pressing as opposed to the road. The Cybertruck's control screen being in the centre console also cuts down the driver's capability to use peripheral vision to monitor the traffic around them.
Now, most EVs put out by real companies do have a steering column and manual sticks still in place for these reasons, so it's not an EV problem, it's a Tesla one.
Driving off the lot.
I don't give a shit. Every vehicle you buy should come as advertised and drivable off the lot. You shouldn't have to get an app, set up an account and register your vehicle in order to charge the damn thing.
No one should be able to steal my car by stealing my phone. I draw the line. Fuck off.
So, yeah. The Cybertruck sucks even worse than we already thought it did. If you want an EV, buy it from a company that actually makes vehicles and not a billionaire's vanity toy company.

Uber Car Requirements in 2023: Essential Checklist by Capital Hire Management Ltd.
Tumblr media
If you're considering becoming an Uber driver in London, it's crucial to ensure your vehicle meets both Uber and Transport for London (TfL) requirements. At Capital Hire Management Ltd., we’ve compiled a comprehensive checklist of five essential Uber car requirements for 2023 to help you get started.
1. Car Model
Not all car models are approved for ridesharing in London. Your vehicle must satisfy these criteria:
Model Year: Align with the local licensing authority's requirements.
Doors: Have four independently opening doors.
Passenger Capacity: Must be licensed to carry a minimum of four passengers.
Popular electric models in London include the Kia Niro 2 EV and the MG5 EV, both of which are spacious and congestion charge-exempt. Specific requirements vary based on the type of Uber service you wish to offer. For instance, UberX requires five seats and four doors, while UberXL needs seven seats and four doors.
If your current car doesn’t meet these standards, consider options like rental cars. Capital Hire Management Ltd. offers a selection of Uber-ready vehicles that meet these criteria. Additionally, you can utilize your Uber Clean Air EV Assistance to receive a discount on an Uber car rental plan.
2. Emission Requirements
Meeting emission standards is one of the most critical requirements. As of January 1, 2023, TfL mandates that all newly licensed private hire vehicles must:
Be Zero Emission Capable (ZEC).
Comply with the Euro 6 emission standard.
Fully electric models automatically meet these emission standards. For detailed information, refer to TfL's emission requirements for private hire vehicles (PHVs).
3. Vehicle Appearance
Your vehicle should be in excellent condition and adhere to the following TfL guidelines:
Condition: No cosmetic damage.
Taxi Appearance: Should not resemble a licensed taxi (e.g., black cabs).
Commercial Branding: No commercial branding allowed.
History: Must not be a salvaged or rebuilt car.
You may make specific modifications to your vehicle, such as adding a partition screen, an incident recording device, or an electronic payment device, provided they comply with TfL’s guidelines.
4. Right-Hand Drive Only
TfL licenses only right-hand drive vehicles. Left-hand drive cars are not permitted, so ensure your steering wheel is on the right side. Converting a car to right-hand drive is possible but can be complex and expensive.
5. Valid PHV Licence
To drive for Uber in London, your car must have a valid PHV licence. This requirement complements your PCO licence as a driver. At Capital Hire Management Ltd., we ensure all our cars come with a valid TfL PHV licence, are new models, and are Uber-ready, eliminating any concerns about paperwork.
Additional Information
Oldest Car Allowed for Uber
Vehicles used for Uber’s standard services, such as UberX and UberXL, must be no more than ten years old.
Does Uber Provide a Car?
Uber does not provide cars directly. However, they partner with companies like Capital Hire Management Ltd. to offer drivers flexible access to Uber-ready vehicles. We provide PCO car Hire plans, tailored for rideshare drivers, ensuring you have everything you need to start earning.
Is My Car Good Enough for Uber?
To determine if your car is eligible for Uber in London, check if it meets all the requirements. If it does, you’re all set to hit the road.

Kia Seltos - The Foundation of Success
Tumblr media
The midsize Seltos compact SUV left a strong first impression back in 2019. Its athletic shape, daring "tiger nose" chrome grille grabbed attention. Kia Sonet - Winning Hearts in the City
Tumblr media
Launching shortly after its Seltos sibling, the Sonet subcompact SUV had big shoes to fill. However, the smart packaging and design of Sonet makes it very appealing to find parking or turn in crowded cities. Owners loved the interior space despite the compact size outside. Mixing style and practicality for urban use worked very well.
Adding spirited engine performance and extensive feature options in top versions also won buyers. Moreover, as an affordable gateway into the Kia brand for first-time buyers, the value-packed and fun-to-drive Sonet struck the right chords.
Kia Carens - Sophistication with Flexibility
Tumblr media
As a family needing a spacious yet sophisticated new vehicle, the 2022 Kia Carens catches our eye. The flexibility of its 6- and 7-seater configurations is perfect for changing carpool demands. Inside, the premium dash and materials and the latest technology and entertainment features create a refined environment the whole family enjoys.

Electric Cars Go Mainstream: Long-Range EVs Now Affordable
Tumblr media
The electric vehicle (EV) market is undergoing a dramatic shift, and American car buyers are reaping the benefits. For the first time, several automakers are offering long-range EVs that are priced competitively with the average gasoline-powered car.
Leading the Charge with Long-Range and Affordability
This electric revolution is being driven by three major players: Tesla, Hyundai-Kia, and General Motors. Each has unveiled EVs exceeding 300 miles of range, all priced below the national average of roughly $47,000 for a new vehicle. Hyundai's 2024 Ioniq 6 takes the lead with a remarkable 361 miles of range and a price tag 25% lower than the national average.
A Darwinian Scramble for EV Supremacy
The past six months have seen a fierce battle for dominance in the US auto industry. Automakers are scrambling to make EVs accessible and cater to a broader consumer base. This competitive landscape resembles a real-life Squid Game, where only the most compelling EVs survive. Customers are demanding more – greater range, faster charging times, and readily available charging infrastructure.
Affordability: The Key to Unlocking EV Success
Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares emphasizes affordability as the key to unlocking EV success. He highlights the need to offer EVs that compete on price from the get-go, even if it means sacrificing profit margins initially. This urgency reflects the need to attract the middle class, a crucial demographic for achieving scale.
EVs for Everyday Drivers
While EVs remain generally more expensive than gasoline cars, the gap is narrowing. Early EVs catered to a niche market, offering limited range and slow charging. However, advancements in battery technology are making EVs more practical for everyday drivers.
The New Standard Bearers: Long-Range, Affordable EVs
The all-electric Chevy Equinox is a strong contender for the title of "most affordable long-range EV." This SUV boasts a compelling 319 miles of range with a starting price around $42,000. Federal tax credits can further sweeten the deal, potentially bringing the base model under $28,000. Additionally, GM has announced a new Bolt that promises to be "the most affordable vehicle on the market by 2025."
Closing the Gap: Incentives and Leases
The narrowing price gap between EVs and gasoline cars, coupled with federal incentives, is making EVs a realistic option for many. Additionally, car leasing can offer a simpler solution to capture tax credits, resulting in lower monthly payments for long-range Hyundai and Tesla EVs compared to gas-powered models.
The Price Parity Puzzle: Defining Affordability
True EV price parity remains a complex issue. What constitutes an affordable EV depends on individual driving needs. A 300-mile range has emerged as a benchmark in the US, offering a sweet spot where the advantages of an EV outweigh the disadvantages for most drivers. However, achieving upfront affordability (without relying on gas savings and subsidies) is crucial for widespread adoption, particularly in developing nations.
