Te Reo Māori rambles ~
Kia ora, quick disclaimer! I'm still sort of new learning Te Reo Māori! (Teh-*r*eh-awe maah-*r*ee: the māori language) I only started my classes in term 1 and its term 2 currently. (a term is half of a semester, there are 4 terms in a nz school year) so yea! If you happen to know more than me and or spot a mistake I make when posting in or about Te Reo Māori, please correct me! Te Reo Pākehā (teh-*r*eh-awe paah-keh-haa: the English language) is my first language so I'm fluent in that :)
Also Te Reo Māori is kinda like a spinterest atm lmaoo im so excited about hearing the language being spoken and seeing it written around the country and im excited to learn!! Yayy!! Learning the language and Te Ao Māori (Māori ways/culture/traditions) helps me feel more connected to my Māori whakapapa aswell! (fuhck-ah-puh-puh: ancestors/ancestry) I am Māori, it doesn't matter if you're white or mixed. Having Māori ancestry = Māori. Period. In Māori culture we dont believe in blood quantums!!! so im what people call a "White Māori"

Fun fact: the p sound is very soft! Like the p in "poo" NOT like the p in "keep" does that make sense? another super fun fact: all kupu Māori (cooh-pooh maoh-*r*ee: māori words) end in vowel sounds and never consonants!
Māori vowel pronounciation:
a - "ahh" as in: car, star, bar, guitar, far
e - "eh" as in: lego, leg, peg, said, head
i - "ee" as in: key, bee, see, reach, scream
o - "aw" as in: saw, claw, maw, jaw, NOT as in "oh/low/so/no"!! This is the most abused vowel by English speakers!
u - "ooh" as in: poo, moo, goo, soon, lose, choose, move, room
Digraphs:
Ng - "ng" as in: song, long, pong, singer, rung NOT as in: finger, linger
Wh - "f/ph" as in: phone, food, few, far, physical, philosophy, phile. NOT as in: who, where, when, what, whether, why, while .
note: different Māori dialects sometimes pronounce this sound as a "w". eg: lots of people pronounce "whanganui" as "wanganui" (fah-*ng*ah-noo-ee/wah-*ng*ah-noo-ee) For other sounds: For "R" focus on rolling your 'r' sounds, It's a soft rolled 'r' (NOT as strongly rolled as how Spanish speakers would roll theirs). the sound you should aim for is somewhere in between an English ‘D’ and 'L'. e.g. like the 'dd' in judder, or the 'tt' in a kiwi accent for 'butter'. You should feel your tongue tip touching near the backof the roof of your mouth. T is pronounced kinda like a sharp "d", but 't' pronunciation varies depending on which vowel appears after it. When succeeded by an ‘a’, ‘e’ or ‘o’, it’s unaspirated (softer, closer to an English 'd'). When followed by an ‘i’ or ‘u’, it is an aspirated 't' (sharper, closer to an English 't'). Hope that makes sense!!!

(Special vowels sounds written with tohutō (macrons) on them)
ā - exaggerate and deepen the regular māori "a" sound and make sure it stands out from the other vowels! But not too much or you'll look like a fool lmaoo X3 eg: when pronouncing the sound, open your throat and lower the back of your tongue. And say "ah". It should sound different to normally saying "ah". another example is that "tohutō" is pronounced "toh-who-taww" not "toh-who-toh" !!

This was going to be your day. You just knew it.
Sure, you accidentally hit snooze on your alarm for way longer than you should have, resulting in your shaking hands fumbling with the doorknob, using your chin to balance your large binder between it and your chest so you could twist said doorknob.
The shaking hands could also be down to the fact that you haven't had coffee yet today, but that's normal, right?
I forgot to pick the coffees up.
I'll text you their orders.
Perfect. Just what you needed.
You walked backwards through the café doors, takeaway drinks in hand. The coffees lay in a cardboard tray, four tucked nicely in their slots, the fifth balancing precariously in the middle of them. The large binder filled with essential documents was nestled in your underarm, but as you walked, you could feel it slip. Luckily you weren't far from the building now, just one more street away. Your mind was far from the road, focusing on not dropping or spilling anything, and maybe you should have paid more attention, but this is a zebra crossing; I shouldn't have to.
Though, the white KIA that came hurtling towards you would probably disagree.
Upon seeing your struggling figure, the car driver slammed on the brakes, the movement pushing his head forward, straining his neck. His head was down, and his eyes were closed, but he felt it. It didn't feel like much, but who was he to know what force kills helpless individuals on zebra crossings? He raised his head slowly and with much effort. He couldn't see you. He undid his seatbelt and pushed the car door open, standing out of it and rubbing slightly at his neck. Something was pooling at his feet.
Oh god, is that blood?
The substance led back to a small puddle surrounded by the deceased coffees and their now crushed cardboard holder.
Thank god.
Snapping out of his slight haze, the man registered your figure, thankfully moving, dusting yourself off as you stood with a small stumble, your hands flailing in an attempt at regaining balance. Your head snaps towards him, eyes fierce.
"You fu-" You began but abruptly stopped upon seeing him. He was slightly short but really, really buff. His face-
"Oh my god, are you okay?" he shrieked, eyes wide in panic as he almost ran towards you.
"Me?" you chuckled cooly, scoffing slightly and trying to ignore the searing pain in your temple. "I'm perfectly fine, you?" As the words left your mouth, you felt yourself stumble again, the world becoming blurrier and darker. He watched as your limp body fell to the concrete below you with a thud. He tried to reach out, but the shock slowed his movements.
"Oh, fuck!"

Changbin had no issue removing your limp form from the scene of the crime, neither physically nor from bystanders, which is actually quite concerning in hindsight.
Changbin wasn't actually sure what to do in this situation. If someone had told him before, he would probably have dismissed them because: that would never happen to me. He laid you carefully in the backseat of his car and there his jacket over your body in case the police happened to pull him over. He thought it would look slightly less suspicious that way.
Changbin wasn't sure what to do, but he knew somebody who would.
The drive to the dorm was probably one of the most stressful situations Changbin ever thinks he's been in. He was constantly trying to turn his head so he could see you. God, he doesn't know what he would have done had you woken up then. Thankfully the drive wasn't long, partially thanks to his legally-teetering speed.
Punching the numbers into the keypad at the main door of the building posed a surprising challenge when two of his arms supported your weight. Still, he managed and swiftly made his way through the building and to his dorm, hoping to avoid any of his neighbours.

MIL and SIL broke down on the side of the freeway. Luckily not too far from us, and everyone is OK. A truck cut them off, so SIL hit the brakes hard, her dog went flying into the gear shift,* and the car seized up and won't start. Did I mention this is at a chaotic exit/interchange? E is going to meet up with them since MIL has to pee (lol) and SIL is waiting for a tow truck. There's shops/KIA service centers near us that should be able to help but like...what if his family wasn't Nonstop Chaos for a minute?
Of course MIL decides she has to call E and provide zero helpful information ("We're on 216" "That's not a freeway between our houses") and was distracting SIL from getting them actual help.
*Do not get me started about how she doesn't secure the dog. He's always bouncing all over and one day she's going to get into an actual accident.

The woman had walked past Alistair so fast that he’d barely had time to stand, then barged right into the Commander’s office like she belonged here.
"Serah, he's in —"
By the time he made it to the door, it was swinging shut in his face. He reached for the knob, but a static spark zapped his fingers as the little "do not disturb" light blinked on next it. Okaaaay, then.
He went back to his chair and stared at the phone on his desk, waiting for the panic alarm to go off. It didn't. No one shouted, and when he got up to peek down the hall, everything seemed fine that way too.
He sat back down again, then got up to to press his ear to the door, straining to hear anything while pushing the guilt down for eavesdropping. I'm just making sure he's safe.
The paranoia of being caught forced him back to his seat a third time, where he drummed his fingers on the desk restlessly.
After a few uneasy minutes (long enough to choke a man, his brain supplied unhelpfully), she walked back out while absently juggling a key one-handed . The Acting Commander was still in his chair, still working, and looked irritated, but unharmed.
“You’re lucky you're cute.”
She stopped and turned. “Oh?”
Shit, I said that out loud. He shuffled his papers around an cleared his throat. It was true, of course: she was incredibly cute. Built like an athlete, short dark hair, and hazel eyes that flashed with sharp humor, like she was already laughing inside at a joke no one else had seen yet.
But saying it out loud was incredibly in poor taste. Especially when she’d just waltzed into the Commander’s office without an appointment or an escort or anything. Who in the void had that kind of clearance?
“Sorry, I was talking to… um. My dog.”
She cocked her head and leaned against the wall, twirling the key on her thumb. “Your dog.”
He offered a panicked grin and tried to talk his way out of the situation he’d talked himself into. “Well, it’s not my dog, it’s my friend’s dog.” Fuck, fuck, fuck, who has a dog — Liss! He fumbled with his cellphone to find the last picture she’s posted. “Best dog I ever met, but an absolute terrorist when he’s bored.”
She moved closer to sit on the edge of the desk. “And you were talking him,” she repeated, playing along and not believing a word he said. “Just now.”
“Errrrr, a picture of him, yes,” Alistair lied. “Because he’s lucky he’s—”
“Cute, right.” The key continued to spin on her finger, and they were such lovely fingers too, so lovely it took three revolutions before he saw what key it was. It had a custom designed head that he’d only seen once before: a red hawk with flared wings.
“Where’d you get that?” he asked.
She grinned and jerked her thumb back toward the Commander's office. "Ask him. Now, about this dog? This very cute dog you were talking to?" She fluttered her eyes. "Can I see him?"
The jig was up. He slid the phone to her wordlessly with a photo of Weisschnauzer on the screen. He was not, in fact, a cute dog. He was an unholy combination of wiry long hair that stuck out at all angles, jagged teeth that protruded around his lips, a tongue too long for his mouth, mismatched ears (one of which was always inside out), and had only three legs.
"Hm." She slid off the desk. "Tell Liss I said hi."
"What?" he asked, the shook his head and grabbed her wrist. "No, I don't even know you are, and that's the Acting Commander’s car keys, you can't just -"
The intercom crackled to life. "At ease, Recruit."
Alistair let go of her like he'd been burned. "Sir, she's got your -"
"I am all too aware of what she possesses, and what she can do it it."
She ruffled his hair, the hopped off the desk. “You’re lucky you’re cute. See you around, Al.”

Chuyện thứ 1
Trưa Sài Gòn đứng nắng 13h, sau khi tôi đánh một giấc khoẻ re thì tôi lại lên trường. Tôi gặp một người bạn học. Bạn ý cau có vì trưa nay bạn trai và bạn ấy cãi nhau khi anh kia phải đón bạn ấy đến trường, sự khó chịu có cơ chế lây lan nên nó lây sang bạn ấy một ít. Tôi thì không có bạn trai và tự đi grab car nên tôi cũng không quan tâm lắm. Nhưng tôi có hỏi một câu: Có bạn trai chán phết nhỉ, mới có 35 độ đã gây nhau, thế mấy hôm 45 độ thì sao?
Có những chuyện nhỏ như hạt cát nhưng là hạt cát trong chiếc giày. Vấn đề không nằm ở việc ai đón ai vào giữa trưa nắng thế này mà vấn đề ở chỗ, nếu ở cạnh nhau mà dễ trở nên căng thẳng như thế thì ta định chia sẻ với nhau như nào về cuộc sống, về những gánh nặng to tướng ở tuổi này?
Nếu ta không thể yêu ai đó nổi với những điều vô cùng nhỏ nhặt thì e rằng cũng chẳng có lý do nào lớn lao hơn và đủ thuyết phục để yêu họ cả.
Chuyện thứ 2
Tôi có học một môn, Thầy đã công bố rất chi tiết (tường tận và chằng chịt thông số) về các thành phần để đạt được điểm cuối kỳ vào buổi đầu tiên của môn học. Nhìn hòm hòm thì tôi đánh giá điểm bài tập lý thuyết trắc nghiệm trên LMS chiếm tỷ lệ rất thấp, tức là không làm thì vẫn có rất nhiều phần khác có thể kéo lại mà không rớt môn. Thế là tôi chọn không làm. Tôi đã từng mở ra và click chọn đại vài câu nhưng tôi đánh giá là nó không mang nhiều ý nghĩa nên không làm nữa (chắc vì thế nó mới chiếm tỷ lệ thấp so với tổng điểm). Tôi dành thời gian viết các nội dung thảo luận và phản biện Thầy ở các topic khác. Có lẽ Thầy để ý vì chao ôi cái con bé này thẳng và "thực" thế nhợ?!
Nhưng hôm nay sau buổi học, Thầy tranh thủ vài phút cuối cùng trong lúc tôi dọn đồ để đi đến chỗ tôi và hỏi vì sao tôi không làm bài tập lý thuyết nữa. Tôi bật chế độ bé con và trả lời là "huhuhu do em bận qué đó nhiều bài quá đi".
Và Thầy chỉ cười, cái điệu cười vừa thương, vừa hiểu, vừa bất lực của giảng viên dành cho người vừa đi học vừa đi làm.
Sau khi ra khỏi đó tôi có vài suy nghĩ. Nếu Thầy đã công bố tỷ lệ rất bài bản và mọi người đều đã chấp thuận, vậy tại sao lại còn băn khoăn vì sao ai đó làm hoặc không làm phần nào đó? Có phải ta đều vậy không? Ta cho ai đó quyền lựa chọn nhưng lại không thoải mái và thậm chí là không thực sự hiểu hết về sự lựa chọn của họ.
Nhưng tóm lại là dễ thương. Vì sự hỏi thăm đó mà tôi đã dành 1 tiếng để làm hết số câu trắc nghiệm của 5 chương. Sau khi lên LMS thì tôi còn thấy Thầy đã nhắn tin riêng vào hộp Chat của LMS từ hôm 27/4 để nhắc tôi về việc hãy làm đầy đủ để đạt điểm toàn diện, đừng chỉ dừng lại ở việc qua môn. Quá dễ thương, nhưng tôi không làm được. Vấn đề của tôi là ở chỗ không phải không muốn làm mà vì thời gian eo hẹp (và lượng bài tập này quá khổng lồ so với các môn khác) nên chỉ có thể ưu tiên làm những bài quan trọng và khẩn cấp thôi. Tôi đi học để đi làm chứ không đi học để tốt nghiệp thủ khoa. Nếu mục tiêu của tôi khác, cách làm của tôi sẽ khác.
Và còn điều cuối cùng, rất may mắn là tôi đã kịp nói với Thầy điều này trước khi ra về: Tuy em khum làm bài tập và em cũng khum thích môn này lun nhưng em rất thích sự bài bản của Thầy. Gửi mail hằng tuần nhắc sinh viên phải làm gì, trong mỗi email ghi rõ to-do-list và đặc biệt là trình bày vô cùng chỉn chu, chưa bao giờ thừa hay thiếu một space nào,... sự OCD này rất ít người có được.

Hi friend! I’m wondering about the process you took to be able to stay in New Zealand because it’s been a dream of mine to move there but it seems really daunting 😭 thank you in advance!

Oof, my story is a long and complicated one for sure. Moving countries (no matter where you're heading) is a HUGE choice and no matter how much you prepare, there will always be a learning curve. For me, however, I didn't prepare at all. Not really. That being said, NZ does have A LOT of hoops to jump through and they're REALLY particular about who gets visas (even more so since the pandemic).
But here's my story:
2015: I had visited NZ for a handful of days in 2015 and then shortly after that trip, I happened to meet someone through tumblr who was a kiwi. We started a long-distance relationship from there.
Now, I need to note that I was homeless at that point of my life. I was living in my car, so everything I owned fit inside a compact Chevy Aveo. And when my car got repossessed and I said 'nothing left for me in [readacted]' and packed up those few belongings into two plastic tubs, bought a one way ticket, and flew to Aotearoa (The actual time between losing my car, to considering moving, to pouring all of my savings into airfare, to actually just up and leaving to start a new life across the world, was only about 2 weeks btw. Like I said, ZERO preperation.)
Early 2016: I first came on a 3-month visitor visa. Then I was able to get a partnership visa for a year. When that relationship ended, I had already decided Aotearoa was my forever home and I was ready to do anything necessary to stay here long-term.
2017: I managed another 1-year visa (working holiday visa).
Early 2018: Then by the time that one was ending, I was in a new relationship (with my current partner) but we hadn't been together long enough for them to sponsor me in a partnership visa.
Without any way to get another working visa, I was forced to plan a move to Australia for a year. I had sorted a working holiday visa there, had job prospects, and although I didn't want to leave NZ, I knew it was only a temporary stop over, because I would spend every moment in Aus trying to get back into NZ somehow.
Final days of my visa, 2018: I had already been thrown goodbye parties, I sold what little belongings I'd started to acquire in my two years here, I had my airfare and visa all ready for Aus -- but I was STILL desperately scouring the Immigration NZ website for ANY legal loopholes, any way I could just stay a while longer. And in doing so, I found exactly that. In absolute secret (didn't tell a single soul from fear of getting my hopes up) -- I applied for a nine-month visitor visa.
And to my utter shock -- it worked. I was able to stay.
2018/19: In those 9 months, I ended up moving in with Doom Them and by the time I was nearing the end of my visitor visa, we were able to apply for a partnership visa together. I was granted another one-year visa.
2019: We had to repeat the process. Submitting over 500 pages of documentation that our relationship was genuine, and even then, they still asked for more. Luckily, they eventually granted me another one year visa.
Early 2020: After living in NZ continuously for four years, you are eligible to apply for residency. Because I had a NZ partner, that definitely helped, because at the start of Covid INZ stopped accepting any other type of residency visa applications. I was SO lucky that we applied WAY early this time, because estimated wait times for visa processing were like 10-16 MONTHS
August 2020: I officially became a NZ Resident!!! Which meant I no longer had to apply for Visas. I was granted the privilege of living in NZ for the rest of my life without ever having to apply for visas that may not be granted. The annual stress and uncertainty we faced each time we applied was no more!
August 2022: After being a NZ Resident for 2 years, you can then apply to be a NZ Permanent Resident. That means you can leave and come back to NZ without any issues. It's basically citizenship without the passport.
So that's where I'm at currently! And in August 2025 (5 years after residency is first granted) -- I will finally get to become a NZ CITIZEN!!!! I cannot wait for the day this country becomes my place of citizenship.
It is a LONG and tedious process that requires a TON of work and stress and money (god so much fucking moneeeeyyyyyy) -- but I wouldn't change it for the world.
Because even though I first moved here for a relationship that didn't work out -- I still wound up finding my forever home, my friends, my family, and most importantly, I did find my forever relationship.

Electric Cars
…so I was asked if I could identify what type of car Stripe and Trixie’s new car was and what kind of electric toy car Muffin was driving.
At first I was thinking Tesla, since giving a little kid a souped-up high speed electric car would be typical of Elon Musk, but the full-size car doesn’t really match Tesla styling.
I think the full size car is possibly a Kia e-Niro / EV Niro, maybe a 2019 model. I realize there’s artistic license taken, and that a lot of cars look similar these days… Here’s my list of spotting features
Hatchback styling
Little spoiler wing on rear
Unusual wheels
The scooped-in styling on the lower parts of the doors
The headlights / grille aren’t a good match so I’m not 100% on this. I’m going to keep looking, but I think it’s fairly close.
As to Muffin’s car, I initially thought possibly an electric Land Rover Discovery, but more likely it’s a Power Wheels Ford F150 Raptor, but they’ve swapped the roll-bar for an old-fashioned fold-down convertible top. The tail light is a good match.
It’s kind of strange the dealership not giving a child-size version of the grown-ups’ car as a bonus, but if I was Muffin I would be happier with the truck too!

For now, Alex Lagetko is holding on to his Tesla stocks. The founder of hedge fund VSO Capital Management in New York, Lagetko says his stake in the company was worth $46 million in November 2021, when shares in the electric carmaker peaked at $415.
Since then, they have plunged 72 percent, as investors worry about waning demand, falling production and price cuts in China, labor shortages in Europe, and, of course, the long-term impact of CEO Elon Musk’s $44 billion acquisition of Twitter. After announcing his plans to buy the platform in April, Musk financed his acquisition with $13 billion in loans and $33 billion in cash, roughly $23 billion of which was raised by selling shares in Tesla.
“Many investors, particularly retail, who invested disproportionately large sums of their wealth largely on the basis of trust in Musk over many years were very quickly burned in the months following the acquisition,” Lagetko says, “particularly in December as he sold more stock, presumably to fund losses at Twitter.”
Lagetko is worried that the leveraged buyout of Twitter has left Tesla exposed, as interest payments on the debt Musk took on to fund the takeover come due at the same time as the social media company’s revenues have slumped.
But Tesla stock was already falling in April 2022, when Musk launched his bid for Twitter, and analysts say that the carmaker’s challenges run deeper than its exposure to the struggling social media platform. Tesla and its CEO have alienated its core customers while its limited designs and high prices make it vulnerable to competition from legacy automakers, who have rushed into the EV market with options that Musk’s company will struggle to match.
Prior to 2020, Tesla was essentially “playing against a B team in a soccer match,” says Matthias Schmidt, an independent analyst in Berlin who tracks electric car sales in Europe. But that changed in 2020, as “the opposition started rolling out some of their A squad players.”
In 2023, Tesla is due to release its long-awaited Cybertruck, a blocky, angular SUV first announced in 2019. It is the first new launch of a consumer vehicle by the company since 2020. A promised two-seater sports car is still years away, and the Models S, X, Y, and 3, once seen as space-age dynamos, are now “long in the tooth,” says Mark Barrott, an automotive analyst at consultancy Plante Moran. Most auto companies refresh their looks every three to five years—Tesla’s Model S is now more than 10 years old.
By contrast, this year Ford plans to boost production of both its F-150 Lighting EV pick-up, already sold out for 2023, and its Mustang Mach-E SUV. Offerings from Hyundai IONIQ 5 and Kia EV6 could threaten Tesla’s Model Y and Model 3 in the $45,000 to $65,000 range. General Motors plans to speed up production and cut costs for a range of EV models, including the Chevy Blazer EV, the Chevy Equinox, the Cadillac Lyric, and the GMC Sierra EV.
While Tesla’s designs may be eye-catching, their high prices mean that they’re now often competing with luxury brands.
“There is this kind of nice Bauhaus simplicity to Tesla’s design, but it’s not luxurious,” says David Welch, author of Charging Ahead: GM, Mary Barra, and the Reinvention of an American Icon. “And for people to pay $70,000 to $100,000 for a car, if you’re competing suddenly with an electric Mercedes or BMW, or a Cadillac that finally actually feels like something that should bear the Cadillac name, you’re going to give people something to think about.”
While few manufacturers can compete with Tesla on performance and software (the Tesla Model S goes to 60 mph in 1.99 seconds, reaches a 200-mph top speed, and boasts automatic lane changing and a 17-inch touchscreen for console-grade gaming), many have reached or are approaching a range of 300 miles (480 km), which is the most important consideration for many EV buyers, says Craig Lawrence, a partner and cofounder at the investment group Energy Transition Ventures.
One of Tesla’s main competitive advantages has been its supercharging network. With more than 40,000 proprietary DC fast chargers located on major thoroughfares near shopping centers, coffee shops, and gas stations, their global infrastructure is the largest in the world. Chargers are integrated with the cars’ Autobidder optimization & dispatch software, and, most importantly, they work quickly and reliably, giving a car up to 322 miles of range in 15 minutes. The network contributes to about 12 percent of Tesla sales globally.
“The single biggest hurdle for most people asking ‘Do I go EV or not,’ is how do I refuel it and where,” says Loren McDonald, CEO and lead analyst for the consultancy EVAdoption. “Tesla figured that out early on and made it half of the value proposition.”
But new requirements for funding under public charging infrastructure programs in the US may erode Tesla’s proprietary charging advantage. The US National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Program will allocate $7.5 billion to fund the development of some 500,000 electric vehicle chargers, but to access funds to build new stations, Tesla will have to open up its network to competitors by including four CCC chargers.
“Unless Tesla opens up their network to different charging standards, they will not get any of that volume,” Barrott says. “And Tesla doesn’t like that.”
In a few years, the US public charging infrastructure may start to look more like Europe’s, where in many countries the Tesla Model 3 uses standard plugs, and Tesla has opened their Supercharging stations to non-Tesla vehicles.
Tesla does maintain a software edge over competitors, which have looked to third-party technology like Apple’s CarPlay to fill the gap, says Alex Pischalnikov, an auto analyst and principal at the consulting firm Arthur D. Little. With over-the-air updates, Tesla can send new lines of code over cellular networks to resolve mechanical problems and safety features, update console entertainment options, and surprise drivers with new features, such as heated rear seats and the recently released full self-driving beta, available for $15,000. These software updates are also a cash machine for Tesla. But full self-driving features aren’t quite as promised, since drivers still have to remain in effective control of the vehicle, limiting the value of the system.
A Plante Moran analysis shared with WIRED shows Tesla’s share of the North American EV market declining from 70 percent in 2022 to just 31 percent by 2025, as total EV production grows from 777,000 to 2.87 million units.
In Europe, Tesla’s decline is already underway. Schmidt says data from the first 11 months of 2022 shows sales by volume of Volkswagen’s modular electric drive matrix (MEB) vehicles outpaced Tesla’s Model Y and Model 3 by more than 20 percent. His projections show Tesla’s product lines finishing the year with 15 percent of the western European electric vehicle market, down from 33 percent in 2019.
The European Union has proposed legislation to reduce carbon emissions from new cars and vans by 100 percent by 2035, which is likely to bring more competition from European carmakers into the market.
There is also a growing sense that Musk’s behavior since taking over Twitter has made a challenging situation for Tesla even worse.
Over the past year, Musk has used Twitter to call for the prosecution of former director of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Anthony Fauci (“My pronouns are Prosecute/Fauci”), take swings at US senator from Vermont Bernie Sanders over government spending and inflation, and placed himself at the center of the free speech debate. He’s lashed out at critics, challenging, among other things, the size of their testicles.
A November analysis of the top 100 global brands by the New York–based consultancy Interbrand estimated Tesla’s brand value in 2022 at $48 billion, up 32 percent from 2021 but well short of its 183 percent growth between 2020 and 2021. The report, based on qualitative data from 1,000 industry consultants and sentiment analysis of published sources, showed brand strength declining, particularly in “trust, distinctiveness and an understanding of the needs of their customers.”
“I think [Musk’s] core is rapidly moving away from him, and people are just starting to say, ‘I don’t like the smell of Tesla; I don’t want to be associated with that,’” says Daniel Binns, global chief growth officer at Interbrand.
Among them are once-loyal customers. Alan Saldich, a semi-retired tech CMO who lives in Idaho, put a deposit down on a Model S in 2011, before the cars were even on the road, after seeing a bodiless chassis in a Menlo Park showroom. His car, delivered in 2012, was number 2799, one of the first 3,000 made.
He benefited from the company’s good, if idiosyncratic, customer service. When, on Christmas morning 2012, the car wouldn’t start, he emailed Musk directly seeking a remedy. Musk responded just 24 minutes later: “...Will see if we can diagnose and fix remotely. Sorry about this. Hope you otherwise have a good Christmas.”
On New Year’s Day, Joost de Vries, then vice president of worldwide service at Tesla, and an assistant showed up at Saldich’s house with a trailer, loaded the car onto a flatbed, and hauled it to Tesla’s plant in Fremont, California, to be repaired. Saldich and his family later even got a tour of the factory. But since then, he’s cooled on the company. In 2019, he sold his Model S, and now drives a Mini Electric. He’s irritated in particular, he says, by Musk’s verbal attacks on government programs and regulation, particularly as Tesla has benefited from states and federal EV tax credits.
“Personally, I probably wouldn’t buy another Tesla,” he says. “A, because there’s so many alternatives and B, I just don’t like [Musk] anymore.”
