When even less is more

Terminology Analogy 

Some verbal analogies are intriguing. Some decades ago, a job was called Naukari. The earnings of the said ‘Naukar’; the sole breadwinner of the family, were enough to feed a family of nine; hence Nau-kari. It was sufficient for the parents, spouse, children and guests too. Lifestyles were simple. There were no concepts of air conditioning, vacationing abroad, multiple vehicles, branded clothing and footwear, jewels etc. Because less was more! 

Some years hence, the term Chaakari came into common parlance. This was perhaps when the concept of nuclear families and Hum 2, Hamare 2 became popular. The emoluments from Chaa-kari were enough to meet the expenses of a family of four. Nothing less, nothing more! 

As the cost of living escalated, earnings came to be known as Tankha. Tankha was just sufficient for meeting one’s own needs. Hence Tan-kha! It became important for each one to earn. The principle was, ‘To each, his own’. What mattered was, ‘I, me and myself.’ Just this and nothing more! 

Time moved on and Vetan happened. Now earnings were not even enough to feed one self, hence Ve-tan! Sigh! Enter loans and finance schemes. Udhaar! Take Udhaar (loan) and live life king size ... increase your wants, needs and desires. Self-gratification is key! Earn more and spend more!  

Let's zoom into today. It seems people work only to buy themselves a Cell phone and what they earn is called Salary! (Read Cell-ary) They believe in, ‘I earn; I spend!’; ‘My money, My life!’ The world is in the palm of everyone’s hand. Everything is just a click of a button away! Alexa and Siri are at your beck ’n’ call. You have everything but you still want more! Someone said, ‘Cell phones are called Cell phones because they ensure that you stay buried in the Cell (Jail) of your phone!’ 

Sometimes we ask, ‘Kitna Kamaya?’ Kitna Kaam Aaya? God alone knows whether it is enough to satisfy our growing desires … for more and yet more! 

Talking of earnings did you get your Pay check? Well in this age of net banking this is what we do all day … pay and check; pay and check … well if your desires are copious, you have to keep paying because without pay’n (read pain), there is no gain. 

With the consumer market booming, online shopping, discount sales, buy one - get one free offers, brands and bargains, flights and cruises, credit cards and debit cards; for everything we buy, we put our tongue in cheek and say, ‘Just this and nothing more …’ 

But really speaking, does it bog down to, just this and nothing more? Or are we always left wanting for more? Care for a ceiling on desires anyone? 

Arz hai ke farz nibhaao to dua milti hai,

Karz uthaane ki marz ki dawa nahi hoti.

Khudgarz ki to kamaayi mein bhi barkat nahin hoti,

Khudaar hote to Rabb ne bhi rehmat dikhaayi hoti!

Are they trying to incorporate Rikara's story from last season, into Shivika in this AU, by giving Shivaay and Anika certain characteristics of Om and Gauri from last season eg Shivaay and sad childhood. It's looking bad tho, because Om and Gauri were developed over a period of time last season. This AU is just too fast, it's just looking like a bad remake, at least they could've put SOS's life in danger or something, would've made sense for Annika to stay on then??

I mean… yeah. They’ve taken all of Om’s parental issues in its entirety and given them to Shivaay here. That, plus the trauma of Arnav from IPK, in having witnessed the death of his parents. All of this is just a rehash of previous 4 Lions characters, none of it entirely original. (It can be argued that Om too, in DBO, was a kind of altered version of Arnav; his faith on love and marriage completely derailed by his parents’ marital fuckups.)

The more you take an already done plot and rework it, it looks tired and doesn’t impress. It’s like remaking cups of tea with an already-used teabag. That’s what’s happening here. Of course it’s not as compelling as Arnav or Omkara’s stories, because we’ve already seen it, and that too crafted with more detail and effort. But if you take it on its own (which is what I’m doing; comparison beyond a certain point is a worthless exercise), it’s a different direction to take Shivaay’s character. Shivaay has always been completely cocky and filled with the confidence of the entire world, sure that he can accomplish anything and everything, never doubting himself. It’s quite a departure to see him so low on faith in himself, and deny himself opportunities that come his way because he thinks he isn’t worthy (both because of his parental issues, and because of how he acted with Anika.) I don’t think any 4 Lions man has ever done that (at least not the ones I’ve watched.) Once they realised their mistakes, they’ve always tried to fix their mistakes in a sorta hamfisted and emotionally shady manner instead of just having an honest conversation (Arnav enforcing the contract, Omkara with the Dilpreet thing, OU Shivaay making Anika stay by using Sahil/reminding her that her house is now owned by him), and sought to get the woman to return to them, by whatever means possible. But Shivaay over here is doing the opposite. He’s letting Anika go because HE is aware that he’s incapable of giving Anika what she needs (and not because he doesn’t want to be with her, or because she refused - which was the case with Rikara.) Anika may think that this relationship is “meant to be”, but he knows that the way he currently is (and he may always be that way) will eventually kill her spirit and any joy she seeks to gain from a marriage. It’s another matter that he hasn’t completely realized the nature of his feelings for Anika and is operating under some heavy duty denial (… come on buddy, no one ~almost makes out with their  “sirf dost” in a swimming pool, ffs. You like her in a most decidedly non-platonic manner.) but whatever feelings and limitations he IS aware of, he’s communicated them with her openly. I think even if he was aware of his real feelings, he would still let her go because he just can’t bear to see Anika trapped in a relationship with a broken man. It’s a far cry from the OU Shivaay who kept forcing her to stay with him time and time again by giving her no answers beyond “tum mere liye bohut important ho.”

But yeah, the whole “she has to live in this house with me, but just as a friend” thing is dumb as fuck on his part (and in itself should clue him into what he actually feels for her.) They could have just had him say that she should stay here till the divorce comes through. That would have been a more legit reason, coz Anika really has no good reason to be here right now, by the status of their current relationship, nor by the nature of her “khudaar” character. But all that looks set to change with this new murder plot. She’ll have to stay on in order to do jasoosi/give emotional support; so let’s just all do a deep sigh and let it go like we did the first time over when this exact same scenario came up in the Tia pregnancy plot...

Heyyy. I have a question to ask in regards to Thursday's episode where Shivaay and Om have a phone conversation. First of all, I LOVED that convo. Om confessing that he's done wrong and promising to give Gauri nothing but happiness made me cry. But he mentioned something about Khudaari and I assumed he was talking about Gauri. What does Khudaari actually mean? Is it something to do with self respect? My hindi isn't great so if you could please help me out. Thank you x

Quite literally khudaari means self respect. But contextually Omkara was referring to Gauri’s self-dependency wali self respect. He was calling Gauri a self-made person and it was all because of her khudaari. It’s not unusual for a person to miss out on chances because of their self-respect as they just don’t accept someone else’s charity or help. Gauri, despite being khudaar, doesn’t let the troubles get the better of her. Omkara had that convo with Shivaay after he saw how uncomfortable Gauri was in accepting Dilpreet’s help. Her first reaction was that she’d pay him back the very next day. And when he brushed it all off, Gauri didn’t exactly warm up to him. She wasn’t all falling at his feet and thanking him with every breathe (something MAAAAAA likes to do) because she really just wasn’t comfortable in taking a stranger’s help like this. Omkara acknowledging Gauri’s khudaari is a such a huge step up for him. He who used to think Gauri was ready to sell her body and kill someone just to get some luxury in her life is now saying he saw what true self-respect is after seeing Gauri? Waah.
