ik it just came out and was only recently finished (like, finished Sept 2023 lol) so this is probably bias speaking but i am extremely taken by She Who Became the Sun and He Who Drowned the World, these books are fckn phenomenal. the gender-fuckery, the exploration of gender and sexual performances, the hidden message of embracing ourselves in all our ugliness and 'deficiency' and making a place for ourselves and ppl like us when others shun us. these books are just!!!

documentaries: immortal egypt (Joanne Fletcher)

i really really love documentaries and this mini series hold a special place in my heart bcs i love history and I've always been fascinated by egypt and Joanne's enthusiasm is just so joyous and infectious, i love it. i put this on repeat in the background when i was doing my graduation project in 2018 lol yea, just me listening to egyptian docu while working my ass off on AutoCAD lol

anime: sarusuberi/miss hokusai

idk how to explain but there's just a quality to this animated film that got me going... like, i adore howl's moving castle but miss hokusai is sth else. it's so peaceful but also deeply profound and visceral somehow.

tv series: aircrash investigation

i love planes, i love the Concorde in particular, but it has nth to do with how cool planes are but with how child-me saw riding planes as a thing that only ppl with money could do. it evolved from there.

i also love mysteries and aircrash investigation is both lol

i remember watching it on tv when i was an adolescent and i was fascinated with the mystery and problem-solving of it all ever since.

movie: the prince of egypt

it's a story about love; love that forgives, love that creates hate, love that divides.

drama: nirvana in fire (c-drama), beyond evil (k-drama), kluen cheewit (thai soap opera)

bl-specific: old fashion cupcake (anime AND manga)

the plot of these dramas is impeccable (tho kluen cheewit is extremely dramatic so pls beware lol), the character developments are fckn amazing, and what's even more important is the platonic relationships between the characters!!!

also, special shout-out to thai bl soap opera khun chai/to sir (with love) as well! the drama is off the charts, the characters are flawed & human & infinitely relatable & Tian & Yang's brotherhood is EVERYTHING

just one of the best bls out there and I've consumed A LOT of BLs/yaois... ALL SORT of em lol

the story is really grounded in reality, the plot is so mundane and relatable, the characters are mature but extremely flawed, and the art (in the case of manga) and the acting (in the case of the series) are amazing.

song: queen bee by vannda (contemporary music from my country)

i DO NOT agree with the lyrics AT ALL but i adore the melody. i absolutely love, love, LOVE how he blends traditional khmer music with the modern one. it's not a necessarily modern take but it's sth different. this artist is very good at blending the old w/ the new and i applaud him for that. his music is so pleasing the ear but the fkcn lyrics... urGH

well, a song of his with message that i completely agree with is time to rise with master Kong Nay... though the mixture is too in my face lol which is why i prefer queen bee

She is a classically trained Cambodian dancer and above she was writing about the propagandist lyrics sung in Cambodia, lyrics perpetuated by the Khmer Rouge. Those lyrics promised growth and prosperity and those promises turned out to be empty for Shapiro.

Pulp Storytime #50: THE DEVIL’S WAT! by Garnett Elliott

No one ever got rich by dying. Shanghai. We start in the middle of the action. Penny An’Te and (a returning) Florence Zee are joined by a new figure. Clad in Soviet explorer uniform is Captain Semya Ivanova. Though sharp-tongued, she’s a devoted and skilled investigator, eager to spread the liberating word of nauchny kommunizm. As they cram into their seats and put on their coats (most airplanes in 1935 weren’t heated!), they remembered why they were even on this trip... *** “Welcome to the stage, Australia’s greatest singer and one of my best friends, Florence Zee!” The Shanghai Century Club went wild. It was a costume gala, and Florence was turning heads as the goddess Aphrodite. (Penny was a Tiki goddess; there was Devika as Odette and Captain Ivanova as a butterfly with a huge cape as wings). Florence regaled the crowd with her time fighting pirate ghosts in the Caribbean. Somehow all the heroic acts and tough decisions were hers. And after a brief song, she surprised everyone by introducing the next artist… Penny An’te! A shocked Penny took to the stage and, to tepid applause, also exaggerated her role in a prior adventure. After dinner, the party drifted in different directions. Penny finally defeated Barnabas Jones at pool. She obliged when he asked if there were any more pockets she wanted to get into. Hope Lala doesn’t mind! Flo and Sem ran into the belle of the ball: Esther Crane, CEO of Crane Cosmetics (a subsidiary of Doc Midas’s conglomerate). Crane launched barbs at the Soviet, who didn’t rise to the bait. Instead, she got the capitalist bragging about her new product… Based on the Fountain of Youth in the Mekong jungle! *** “Hey, guys, stop daydreaming. You have to order.” The group exited their reverie, finding themselves at a French café in Phnom Penh. They had to get a boat upriver and find the lost Wat. Allegedly, it had a 300-year-old woman, and something keeping her young! Oh, and Florence’s girlfriend Trudy was covering the Crane expedition. The party was extra diligent about research. Florence’s attempt to contact local musicians was an epic success. Not only did they tell her that Esther had arrived and left earlier that day, but they also mentioned an ambush waiting on the docks. The players continued their winning ways: they bribed local officials to increase riverside patrols, and out-negotiated skipper Johan Van Dreesen. Penny was too smart for his bait and switch. Not only that, she dove into the Mekong to stop a saboteur, grabbing his hand drill and, with Ivanova’s help, sent him packing. The fact he was shirtless and in a loincloth did not escape the others, who teased Miss An’te. How did she keep meeting so many hot men? Also, they hired a guide, 'Pollyanna'. Esther Crane, for reference:

The trip upriver was uneventful. Sampans dotted the waterway... Lush green jungle hills spread in all directions… the biggest problem was having to pay more bribes to government officials. Things only got tough on the second evening, when one of those officials appeared, speared to a tree. The jungle was filled with the Khmer Rau, an enthusiastic but underfunded rebel group. The had dice started hot for the players, but luck fled. The players were outmatched by a tattooed, black-tongued warrior named Hanuman and his shield maiden. Particularly unpleasant was when Hanuman snuck up on Van Dreesen, then cut his skipper hat and body in half. The players conceded the combat, heading to the rowboats and blowing up the ship’s boiler. The jungle was easy compared to the river. Quicksand, water buffalo, mosquitoes and leeches; the players had an answer for everything. Well, mostly Captain Ivanova and Pollyanna had the answers. The Captain used the flat of her saber to spank a water buffalo into retreat. Lifeguard Penny saved Florence from a flooded embankment. Unfortunately, there was a 300-person Khmer Rau village between the players and the Wat they were searching for. Captain Ivanova took point. She sympathized with the rebels, asked if they had seen a white woman and her retinue, and surmised their rivals had snuck past the village. Semya's diplomacy was so skilled they gave her extra information: 'make sure to feed the giant macaques or their lives would be forfeit'! Wait, is there a translation error going on? Nope. The temple was surrounded by a black water moat. There were 6-foot-tall macaws, and a raft with a pile of bodies. The jaded group seemed happy to feed the “sacrifices” to the monkeys… which made Pollyanna vomit. Inside the temple, things got arch. Devika was very briefly caught in Esther Crane's net trap. Penny gave away the group’s position to rescue her. Despite a lot of tough threats, though, nobody felt obligated to kill each other! Sure, Semya studied under the enemy skipper (careless archaeologist Otto Prochaska), and resented his lack of respect for ancient cultures. But everyone was tired out from the jungle trek… so no hard feelings. Florence found a secret staircase and headed up. Shockingly, behind a gauzy screen, among 100 lit red candles, was a gorgeous woman wearing only a ceremonial crown! She bid Florence by name… and the Aussie lesbian completely fell for it. Penny struggled to pull her away. But Captain Ivanova was suspicious. She followed a mysterious breeze to a hidden room, where an 80-year-old woman hid with a wind machine and a powerful radio. There was no fountain of youth, it was a grandma/granddaughter confidence scam! Trudy was livid. She dogwalked the younger of the scammers, saying that she was a “Hawaiian slut” and a homewrecker. It wasn’t lost on Penny how much damage her sister Gertrude had caused Florence and (Australian) Trudy. Awkward. The macaques didn’t care about this revelation. They tore the roof off the Wat and began searching for more flesh! The group raided what they could from the temple, scoring a 30-pound golden statue. They tried to flee, learning that the monkeys hated the smell of kaffir limes… but realizing they would have to get through the moat. It was a breakneck escape, with no time to stop in the village and sort things out. *** Sometime later, the players were in the dining room of the Shanghai Century Club. They decided their newfound wealth should be spread, maybe at a dinner party. The only hard part was finding people to invite who were classy, un-evil, and didn’t have romantic entanglements. The hardest task of the adventure.

A Year of Torpor

4th July 2023

Wow, I can't believe I completed one academic year here in Phnom Penh. In the beginning of the academic year, I couldn't cope with the way the school is run.

There were many teachers who don't seem to like the curriculum of the school as it's learning through play. I find the school schedule isn't ideal as children are playing the entire day for 8 hours and as an Asian, I don't see results from playing the entire day. In fact, I was so used to being busy the entire day in previous school and I couldn't adapt to not doing anything but babysit the students playing most of the time. Every afternoon after lunch, the time somehow slowed down which makes me think my watch and clock is broken.

One after another teachers came from United Kingdom decided to leave as it was basically something they couldn't adapt. It affects me to actually think if this place is meant for me.

But look at this tough cookie! Survived through the lethargic year from doing nothing much. But there is something to keep and share here.

Before we closes the academic year, we had so many excursion. From visiting trampoline park, playing at the big field, having an art session and many more!

Introducing Ms. M! She's extremely smart, expressive, caring and very introvert! Doesn't like playing with friends and explore toys very differently from others. Reads at 2.5 years old! And the most amazing part was, played the song Twinkle Twinkle Little Star on the piano on her own! I was actually teaching her sister how to play the song and sticked some stickers on the keys. I did not teach her how to play them and one day, she was pressing the keys, trying out how the pitches. Once she got it, I accompanied her. And I'm amazed how she could just play with me and not get confused!

Ms. M is my motivation to stay in this school. She somehow make things exciting in school and motivation to come to school.

My music class with the children wasn't productive initially. It was difficult to get the children to sing and participate in my class. This is because they are so used to playing at their own pace and find it difficult to sit down and listen to instructions. But somehow, I manage to have a relationship with them and get to know them better in order to plan accordingly. I'm glad some of them enjoyed the songs we sang while others are still adapting to it.

Last but not least, I am very proud of the year end performance by the children. Being in international school, I think it's important to promote different languages, culture and ethnicity. As the children consist of mostly 4 ethnicity, I taught 4 folk songs from Malaysia, China, Khmer and Japan. The children loved it and have been singing it randomly. What more, it was so lovely to see the children dressed in their traditional clothes!

One more year. One more year to deciding where's next?

Although more so recent years have now included Guava fruit into wedding ceremonies and enjoy them immensely, folks of older generations have reprimanded their children who enjoyed the sweet, tangy flavors that unknowingly might have sealed their fates. You might’ve known someone who probably have heard of this superstition.

I’ve been really into Cambodian music lately, specifically the growing Original Music Movement. For some context, Cambodia had a really rocking music scene in the 60s, prior to the Khmer Rouge taking over. A lot of the Khmer cultural heritage was lost during the Cambodian Genocide, and recovery after the fall of the Khmer Rouge regime is... still ongoing in a lot of ways.

Specially focusing on music, a lot of the music that Cambodia “produced” after that was basically Khmer (Khmer, referring both to the people of Cambodia and also the Khmer language) covers of foreign songs. There was no producer of original Khmer music. It wasn’t until recently that there was a revival of Cambodian original music.

The figure I’m most familiar with is Laura Mam, though she isn’t the only figure. She is co-founder of a record label called Baramey Productions, which produces Khmer original music. Her story is really interesting. Here are some NPR articles about her and a TED talk that she did.

Her production company, Baramey, is the one I’m most familiar with and has artists such as VannDa, Sophia Kao, Khmeng Khmer, and Songha. There’s another popular production company called KlapYaHandz with artists like Vuthea, SreyLeak, and AGO. I also was able to find an alternative label called Yab Moung Records.

History lesson aside, LETS TALK ABOUT THE MUSIC.

VannDA

Basically, if we’re talking about contemporary Cambodian music, we HAVE to start with VannDa. He is considered the King of Cambodian Rap, and for good reason. His ability to seamlessly weave old and modern music styles, English and Khmer, is incredible. An incredibly versatile artist, I don’t think I’ve heard anything of his I don’t like. Honestly, a lot of his songs read like poetry—and they’re all subtitled in English so he’s a really good jumping in point.

Time to Rise is his most famous song. It’s helped him reach international fame, and really meshes traditional Khmer music with modern rap. It also incorporates vocals from Master Kong Nay, a musician who survived the Khmer Rouge, to really solidify this blend of past and present. The lyrics are gorgeous, the beats amazing, and it’s just such an incredible song. The instrumentals (the ones not done by Master Kong Nay) are done by Vanthan, a fantastic musician who’s mastered all of the Khmer traditional instruments.

Queen Bee is a sweet love song. This is a live performance he did, linked mostly because you can really see the flute here!

Laura Mam

While she mostly produces these days I think, she does still make music sometimes, especially for Women’s Day. She has such a sweet sounding voice, and I love everything that she puts out! Also, she dances really well—sometimes she shows up in Baramey Productions videos to dance and things. Again, her videos are subtitled in English, so an easy jumping in point.

Just Like You is a really cool song that honors three Cambodian women and tells their stories of resilience. Has some bonus VannDa in it, and is catchy as hell.

Kmeng Khmer

Literally meaning “Khmer Youth,” they’re a duo who were actually the first group signed on with Baramey Productions. I really like that they’ve got a young, kind of lighter sound. Their stuff doesn’t have subtitles, so I don’t understand the lyrics, but it’s such fun music to listen to!

Far Away is such a bop. And their dancing is really nice. I love how bright and fun the video is, too.

Komlos Tang 3 is another fun, catchy bop that I really enjoy.

Sophia Kao

She’s more of an R&B singer. I love how distinct her voice is, it’s so relaxing and good. She mostly (entirely?) sings in English, and often collabs with the other Baramey artists. I really love her sophisticated sound and sad vibe.

Time is a great sad love song. I love her mix with VannDa, the blend of English and Khmer they have going~!

Hell is another sad love song in her typical style.

Vuthea

A hugely popular Cambodian artist, he works in a variety of styles ranging from pop-rock to hip hop to more traditional styles as well. Vuthea’s songs are some of the most popular in Cambodia today, and for good reason—he’s super fun to listen to.

Kromom 3 Styles is a fun song to listen to, and possibly his most popular song?

Oun Sas Ey is another easy listen. His songs always have such a nice beat, and his voice is so nice!

Sreyleak

A farmer who sings both pop and traditional music, Sreyleak has such a beautiful voice. She is super popular in Cambodia, and I love all of the music of hers that I’ve heard.

Saravan Rok Ku is super neat because she’s got this very traditional sound going on, compared to the rap that goes on in the middle. Her voice is just so lovely, and I never feel like she’s overpowered by the rappers.

Rom Tov Mit is just a really nice display of her vocals, it’s super sweet~!

Sin Setsochhata

The granddaughter of one of Cambodia’s most famous singers, she is a soul and pop singer. Her voice is beautiful, and she’s able to sing a bunch of different styles too. She’s working on a new EP and I’m super hyped to see what she’s going to make!

Champa Battambang is a remake she did of one of her grandfather’s most famous songs. It’s honestly so beautiful, the first time I listened to it, it took my breath away.

Truth is a beautifully sad song, that shows off her voice so well. It also has English captions, and is an incredibly poignant song about facing the reality of her father’s death.

Vartey Ganiva

Dubbed Cambodia’s Queen of Punk, she’s one of the few punk/alternative Khmer artists. I honestly couldn’t find much about her, but she seems really neat!

Evil Husband is about domestic abuse. Such a strong song. I love her voice, and the instrumentals are so good too! ��

I’ll stop here because uh… this list is already GINORMOUS, but I hope you like at least some of the songs I’ve linked. Some of the artists are on iTunes if you decide you want to support them. It’ll be really cool to see how Cambodia music continues to develop~! Note: I’m not like… a huge music person, so I don’t know all the terminology or anything so sorry about that!
