Mansuang Review:
Mansuang was amazing. I was particularly impressed by Apo's performance as Khem, which was emotional and complex and deeply moving. His story was riveting to me. I personally love characters with trauma in their backgrounds, who have been beaten down by the world into a certain way of thinking and behaving, and Apo captured that experience gracefully and expertly. There is palpable pain in his performance of the darkest moments. I will say that they could have expanded upon his character development a lot more. It would have been nice to have a bit more emotional nuance in his journey towards self-love and acceptance, but I definitely didn't feel unsatisfied by where his narrative ended up. The movie was already juggling so much they clearly just didn't have the time to dedicate to expanding upon the nitty gritty aspects of his healing.
I will say that I am honestly kinda surprised this didn't have any romance in it at all, because there is such a good foundation for it that it feels like they wasted? Like, Khem feeling that no one cares about him except for his body could have been the gateway to Chatra demonstrating care and affection for him outside of sex, proving that he's capable of being loved for who he is. That jumps out at me. That might have been an opportunity for them also to have expanded on Chatra's character, and given him more presence and personality. Khem is a protector, that's clear in the way he treats Wan, but he so often has to sacrifice himself in that role that it would have been devastatingly effective if Chatra had had an opportunity to take care of him in some way instead.
I loved the *bad touch* backstory, for whumping reasons, but it did leave me a little confused. Why did Khem have to have sex with those people? Was it because he's ambitious enough that he'll sell himself to advance his position? Was it because someone was forcing him to, like a boss or person in power? Was it because he felt he had no choice, or was protecting Wan from something? I just wish we could have gotten to know him better, because we get to see the impact of the trauma but we don't really get to understand it, and that leaves me wondering. It felt like, during the dance scene where Khem goes off script, that he did that as an attempt at seduction, because seduction is what he knows and what he expects. He's used to trading in on his beauty and sex appeal to get what he wants. That suggests so many characteristics to me that just... don't quite exist in the rest of the story. And there's no real conclusion to it other than Khem, at the end of the story, choosing to be a dancer because he's at peace with his place in society. Again, lots and lots of opportunities were built up that just didn't quite manage to hit a home run.
Mile did a fucking fantastic job with what he was given, but I was a little disappointed with his role in the story. I felt like the relationship between him and Khem was half-done and underdeveloped, but it had so much potential! He put in an absolutely solid performance, and knocked the emotional scenes out of the park, but I couldn't help but feel like he wasn't given the chance to really shine.
Tong killed it. Killed it fucking dead. That man has the screen presence of a King, which surprised the fuck out of me cos I thought he was a character actor based on his performance in KinnPorsche. But no, this guy has range. I was very impressed.
Bas did a great job playing a racist sad boy. RIP Wan.
In conclusion: a flawed movie, but still so enjoyable and so, so worth watching. I cannot fucking wait for Shine, I hope that it delivers in some of the areas Mansuang wasn't able to.

Man Suang 10/10 absolutely amazing. The costumes are fantastic, the acting is amazing, the dancing is absolutely out of this world it's INSANE how much talent these people have. I can't recommand it highly enough. Apo just absolutely shines in the roll of Khem, and all the work he put in whole-heartedly paid off. I love seeing him on screen, his energy, his love for acting, it's always a treat.
I'm also really impressed by Mile's performance as Chatra, especially since he didn't get much depth in the big overaching plot of the movie, and was sometimes put on the sidelines (here's hoping for SHINE the series for him to show more!). He worked really hard and it showed!
The only flaw i could name is that there is a lot of story and not much time; so it's very fast paced at times and introduces new characters very rapidly, so i was a little confused at the end about who was who and what happened, but i understood enough to still enjoy it.

I put a few on my watchlist that generally had good reviews but yeah let's just say I'm glad I didn't miss anything in the last 2 years lol. The only one I liked was Love Mate, the rest was pretty much pointless. Hopefully the upcoming ones will be better 🤞🏻

Official Man Suang synopsis is out and has revealed the following:
The movie is *officially* confirmed to be a romance which also confirms the original synopsis about it being a love story between Chatra (Mile) and Khem (Apo).
The POV character that's being used to connect the audience to the story is most likely Khem, but the story overall has three major characters: Khem, Wan, and Chatra.
Khem and Wan are best friends who went to Man Suang to investigate the truth behind it, implying that they're spies. 🤯
Chatra is not just an ordinary Taphon drummer. He seems to have an ulterior motive and we'll find that out as the story progresses.
There's gonna be murder, rebellion, and betrayals so prepare your tissues folks. 😭
Here's the official trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YrqMcFD1osQ&t=15s

Dynamic Duo Mile & Apo
With a warm personality, these two actors talked about cultural projects that represent soft power.
Harper's Bazaar (HB): What was your first impression of Indonesia? Mile (M): I have known Indonesia since elementary school and Indonesia seems to have a very interesting culture. The first impression when he was an adult came from feedback from Indonesian fans on social media . The moment I landed, I felt very familiar, like I was at home. Apo (A): The first impression of Indonesia for me came from Indonesian fans , because previously I only saw it on social media . This visit in Jakarta was the first moment I met them. Previously I had been to Bali and I felt that Bali had a good, cozy culture. Balinese people are also very friendly.
HB: Still talking about impressions. What was your first impression of each other? M: My impression when I first saw Apo was the character Zhan Zhao in the series Justice Bao (Zhan Zhao is Judge Bao's secretary) . At that time I first met Apo at a fashion show , that's where I realized the similarity. A: Mile was very friendly and gentle, it made a big impression on me. I officially met him at a fashion show . But apart from that I've met him at the gym. Actually, Mile and I studied at the same university. Mile is a senior, I am a junior, but in different majors. We are 2 or 3 years apart.
HB: How would you compare the completed projects you have worked on with ManSuang? What's special about this film? M: If we compare it, the format of the previous project was a series and this time the format is a film. There are differences between the two formats in terms of how they are produced. Then the things that stand out from the main theme of this film are the cultural, historical side, even the act of inspection. So a combination of main themes like this is very different from the previous one. A: My previous projects were generally roles in soap operas or series, they were long term. In the film ManSuang, the duration is only two hours. In ManSuang it seems like the audience shares their imagination with the characters in the film, while I feel that in soap operas the audience just watches. Apart from that, ManSuang is a story about Thailand , about the culture and stories about the people.
HB: Tell us about your tour to Jakarta this time. M: Our main goal here is actually to meet and greet fans directly. We want them to see the real ManSuang in Jakarta. We also try so that fans can watch our performance live on stage, even though we only show snippets of scenes from films. So far there are 4 cities in Asia that we will visit, Jakarta is the first. A: So in this tour we will bring the audience to feel the atmosphere inside ManSuang, which is an imaginary place that makes people happy. Moreover, this was the first moment the Be On Cloud team and Indonesian fans met in person, so this was a very beautiful experience.
HB: Talking about your character in ManSuang, what did you prepare to get into before filming? M: For me there are two ways, inside out and outside in. Not how to play it, but how to think about playing that role. Inside out is how I introduce the character named Chatra, how his life is, what his father and mother are like. And outside in is how to study the era of 1850 (this is the setting of the year in the film ManSuang) , what the culture was like at that time. For example, how people at that time interacted with foreigners, the way they spoke. In those days, people couldn't speak English or Chinese well, so if someone was able to do so, then he was someone special. There are differences in ways of speaking and behaving. We wanted to immortalize that moment. A: At first I learned about Khem's character. He loves dancing so I had to learn it before starting the shoot. I am from the generation that lives in the present, while Khem lives in the past, so I have to learn how the old people thought, danced, and what their thought patterns were. I have to train the flexibility of my fingers so that I can display the beauty of the dance, as well as practicing my body movements so that I can look like a picture in a painting. If you have ever visited a temple in Thailand, there are pictures of dancing on the walls. I tried to be like what was in the picture and ended up studying dance for 8 months. Then, apart from trying to show Thai culture, I also explored the character development of Khem .
HB: After finishing all this busy work, what would an ideal rest day look like for you? M: Basically I like everything related to guitar. Then I also like watching concerts, thirdly I like sports. Then lastly, I like to drink when I have free time. A: I like nature. Just sitting in the front yard of the house is already a break for me, the important thing is there must be delicious food or snacks .

Liveblogging Man Suang
Tumblr media
First things first - outrage at Not-Mile who dares put his hands on Apo. Who the fuck do you think you- oh good, he's dead. Though, this is obviously something Khem expects and is used to. The touching, not the murder.
Wan, leave that knife in. Wan, don't take that knife out. Okaaaay, he took the knife out. Khem, at least don't be holding the murder weapon when- *sigh* never mind. Jesus fuck, Khem and Wan are not the sharpest crayons in the box, are they?
"You were caught red handed next to my nephew's body!" Only literally! I mean, technically correct. And in this instance, not the best kind of correct. :(
I love the costuming
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ohh hellooooo. Also, girrrl what are YOU doing at the devil's sacrament?
Tumblr media
You met him thirty seconds ago and you're already showing him your pussy? Chatra, you slut.
Tumblr media
Hey. HEY! Lord Not-Chatra. Stop looking at him like that. I swear, Khem is to higher-social-standing men like Will Graham is to serial killers. Where's the Chesapeake Chatra when you need him?
Tumblr media
Montage time!
Khem. Sweetie. Honey. You need to be more subtle if you're going to be a spy....
Apo is so pretty when he cries. 😭
YEAH YOU TELL HIM KHEM! Calling out the double standards! Also, that dude is totes jealous he didn't catch Lord Not-Chatra's attention...
Chatra gives you one warning and then it's a FIST TO THE FACE.
Tumblr media
Are they on a date? They're totally on a date.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is a very important secret. So I'm telling you, a guy I've spoken to four times, on our first date, at a table at the corner of an intersection with open doors and people all around. Very important. Top Secret.
I love the sheer disappointment and disbelief in Khem's voice. Khem: A treasure trove? Really? That's what you're going with? Chatra: Why are you laughing?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Khem, you're such a hothead. You got into a KITE FIGHT. But it is a great excuse for Chatra to grope your waist. Well done.
At least Khem tells his secret up a tree and not on a LITERAL STREET CORNER.
Can't rid yourself of being a lowborn? *looks at the camera like it's The Office*
Me: I'm laughing with Khem cause a treasure map is stupid. Me five minutes later: wait, you bought that??? Chatra: Wait, he bought that? Oh man, this pretty idiot desperately needs my help...
Tumblr media
Me (And Chatra definitely): My god, look at his face transform into a smile... do it again! again!
Tumblr media
Khem: I have something to tell you... .... ... I've invited Chatra to join our missionWAN:ARE YOUFUCKING CRAZY???
I love the reconstruction sequence. That's some good storytelling.
HAHAHAHAHA "If you don't believe me, feel free to search my rooms!" Wan: Oh...I don't think that's nec- Chatra: DON'T MIND IF I DO. "Maybe you need to search me. I'll undress" Khem: NO THANK YOU WE'RE GOOD.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ok... do you think that's enough food for three people? I think we might need to get another table of food in here...
What.... what are you doing Chatra. Like... my man has to have a good reason to point a gun at Khem... but there are no good reasons to point a gun at Khem.... but my man has to have a good reason to....KHEM LET HIM EXPLAIN
Ahhh Hong, I knew he wasn't dead. I knew it! I did! Oooh an assassin's teapot. Nice.
Yeah, old man! I agree!
Tumblr media
Goddamned Apo is so goddamned pretty.
Tumblr media
Oh damn. Risking your life to save your friend... and ending up having to kill him yourself. What a gut punch.
Aww Chatra. I'm not crying, you're crying!
Where's the series? I need the series now! Where is ittttttt???? 😭😭😭😭😭 You can't leave my boys like this!! 😭😭😭

Man Suang is a pretty good and solid movie!
Ok, putting out there. I got involved in Thai drama due to Kinnporsche the Series, no I have no shame about it. It was fun, it had good looking dudes, and even though it initially seemed over the top in acting effort, the actors started to flow into their characters better and it was a fun show. Kinnporsche had amazing behind the sceens stuff that actually got me interested in the actors, especially Apo and Mile, who are freaking cute together. But all good things must end and so did the series.
But then there was a ray of hope! A glorious teaser was released.
youtube
Please note: Absolutely none of this teaser was in the movie, which I find both exasperating because I love every bit of it and the music, but also hilarious, because they caught your attention.
Please note pt. : All the BL lovers from Kinnporsche were salivating hard and if they said they weren't they're lying liars who lie.
So attention was given. And it took a long while, but then they released on official trailer at the Cannes Film Festival! Oh shnap, we got some extreme legitimacy here. This was not going to be cheap film, this was going to be quality. And all the BL lovers are still crying in anticipation at seeing their boys back together again.
youtube
Please note pt. 3: We still have NO idea what this movie is about. Just have the visual, which are gorgeous and a couple written lines teasing, but still no actual plotline. That's ok, the interest is still strong.
And one thing Be On Cloud does VERY well, is know how to advertise and keep people's interests. And it finally releases almost a year later. And lots of people cry. Not because it's a bad movie, but because there's no blatant BL storyline. There are hints, teases, looks, but that is not the main storyline. People are crying online, they've been deceived, there's no BL!
Please note pt. 4 (I'm having way to many please notes): Be On Cloud NEVER said it was BL. It was inferred since both Apo and Mile were pared in a movie together and the fact that Bo On Cloud only had the one series with mega BL plotlines.
The only reviews I could read (In English, which is all I read. I know, I should try other languages but I legit have tried 4 languages and I just can't) mostly complained about the lack of BL storyline and that it was slow at times. No synopsis, no breakdowns. Full stop. I was sad. I kept checking on my tried and true Tumblr, which normally doesn't disappoint, but nada, bupkis. I was sad. Again. There was no release date I could find with English subtitles. Again, sadness ensued.
But finally, glory be, it was announced that Man Suang release on Netflix. Today. Yay! And after work I sat and watch it all, and here is my review...finally.
Man Suang is actually a pretty good movie. Most of my knowledge of Thai culture comes from BL shows, which helped a little but I did have to pause occasionally to look something up (the betal nuts for example) and I'm sure I missed a lot of things, but I got a pretty good understanding of everything. The pacing was a bit different from movies in the US, and that could be jarring, but I got used to it. Overall it was a good movie. I'd watch it again (which is a big deal for me, I watch once and then remind myself with fanfiction).
Thoughts (spoilers below):
Everyone was in a fucked up position. Except, Tiang, fuck him.
Khem: Sweetheart, just trying to take care of his friend. The finale probably fucked him up a bit. I like to consider Chatra comes back and gives him some comfort.
Please note (Please don't ask me what number this is): There's now going to be a BL series called Shine which is going to follow their relationship. See? Just had to be patient.
Tumblr media
Chatra: Yeah, I'd be concerned if my father was a traitor and my whole family was going to pay for it. (On a side note: What is the Thai repercussions for that? Ancient China had death of the whole family for so many generations, but I'm not sure what they are in Siam.)
Wan: Baby...honey...that was fucked up. I get where you were coming from with your severe PTSD but trying to blow everyone up is not the answer. But I do hate that he felt betrayed by Khem.
Hong: Look at my sheltered little man turn into a Bossman! I see good things in his future.
All the aunties and women in the show: Couldn't have done it without you and I love seeing all of you. Especially auntie who put the mean boss in his place while trying to feed the two newcomers. (Boss: Don't flirt with my woman! Auntie: I flirt with who I want to, go sit in the corner until you're repentant! Boss: Yes, ma'am).
And finally: Absolutely gorgeous set design and costumes. Like, super wow. Loved it all! It was interesting to see the crossover of Thai and western design, like Chatra's suit and cravat top/traditional pants combo at the end. Jarring, but I imagine that time period was jarring with all the different influences happening as well. Much like the differences in hairstyles which helped you identify Chinese descent from Thai descent (using the Queue hairstyle instead of fully or partially grown out hair).
Overall, solid job on Man Suang, I recommend it to anyone who is interested in new cultures, pretty people, and just an interesting storyline.

Adorable chibi Khem and Chatra
I commissioned them from the talented @apoluvre and they are so cute 💖
Heaven Is In Your Arms
Part 1 - A Phantom and A Dream
Khem struggles with tricky choreography, Chatra attempts to be encouraging but he needs some practice at it.
A cat is judgemental.
A self indulgent reflection on the frustration of dance practice and the questionable actions of epic heroes. Inspired by a short trailer, my own love of traditional dance and pure vibes.
Part 2 - Unraveling In Your Arms
Khem needs a hand getting out of his elaborate dance costume. Chatra Volunteers to help 🌶️
The minute I saw a dancer being sewn into their costume, I knew I needed Chatra to sensually unstitch Khem 😌
Part 3 - When The Nightingale Sings
Man Suang is a place where dreams come true but its fabled enchantments mask sinister activities and darker delights.
In a place where love can be traded freely, bought or sold, loyalties are hard won and today's friend could be tomorrow's enemy.
Khem and Chatra are drawn to each other but can their blossoming romance survive the cut throat world they live in and the responsibilities placed on them by others that lead to dangerous secrets between them?

Beautiful art by @chatoyen 💛

Lovely gift from a reader 😊
*almost this entire story was written before I was able to watch the film so consider this an au of sorts and if you haven't already seen it, go watch ManSuang on netflix because it's beautiful 💖*

MAN SUANG SPOILERY STUFF UNDER THE CUT
Afdhdjdk I'm consumed by what Shine could be and terrified of getting my hopes up for things that might not occur, and vice versa lmao.
Pond mentioned the show not being a sequel to Man Suang but rather it's own story, and yet the characters are the same.
Combined with the tone of the show promised to be a light romantic comedy full of hope, I'm super afraid of what might come of Khem's character in the show.
Like, I really, really hope they don't for instance ignore Khem's traumatic past regarding sexuality, or his lack of agency in life stemming from his class in society, for the sake of lightness. Especially considering their different class backgrounds at opposite ends of the spectrum.
In fact, it would be optimal that Khem getting some agency for once would be a big part of their romance, because it would give it so much more emotional weight.
Imagine, Khem never having had the power to choose, decides to allow Chatra to love him, because he wants him. Chatra has so much reverence and respect for Khem that he understands the weight of that and is attentive and understanding towards him. Or even better, he learns to. It would be so agshjdkfkfflllglg Agshskddld Hhggggffffrrdded jsjdkskdlslssl
I am getting ahead of myself here, this was released today for god's sake help meee

MAN with the kite, the market, and Chatra defending Khem scenes i rlly thought they were gonna have a sad romance, like not ending up together bc of the time but still loving each other
like I would've loved some "too much concern to be purely platonic" or meaningful glances/soft touches scenes
already seeing man suang described as a ‘bromance’ lmao RIP 💀💀💀

This Scene!!!
Tumblr media
I have screamed about this scene before because it shows Khem's determination to master the intricacies of lakhon nai dance. He even sleeps with his hands forced into extension to make up for the years of formal training he didn't get.
Not to mention that he's performing a dance which was exclusively meant to be performed by women in that time period and their gracefulness and flexibility were the most important aspects of their dance.
But I am not here to talk about dance today (for a change.)
Tumblr media
No, I am here to shriek like a banshee about the fact that Khem is sleeping with the only thing left to him by his parents wrapped tightly around the bed right beside his head. Always within sight and grabbing distance.
Tumblr media
The cloth that he always wears around his waist as a sash. The only thing his parents left with him when he was almost certainly abandoned at a temple and then raised by a monk.
Tumblr media
Give that boy the love and security he is desperately craving! 🥺🥺
It's what he deserves!!

Man Suang Vogue photo shoot
The warm tones of the top four pictures are very reminiscent of gold washed daguerreotypes.
The blurring due to movement was very common with early forms of photography as you had to sit completely still and often for an uncomfortably long time.
Khem's golden outfit - I love it!! 💛
(I think that's obvious from the amount of times I post about it 😅)
The textures, the colours, the blend of traditional Thai dance style with western additions like the buttons.
It's even more of a unique take on the traditional Khon dance attire than Khem's wonderful red Inao costume while still feeling absolutely authentic and very fitting for the ethereal beauty of Phra Law.
The change from a traditional sangwan body chain to a gem linked chain that fastens his cloak. 👌
It's all so gorgeous - respect and kisses to the costume designer. 🙌
I also love the colour choices for Chatra's outfit too, they look great on him and blend very nicely with Khem's.
There are complimentary purple tones in both their costumes and I enjoy that a lot.
