The interesting thing about Gobbowl culture in Ankama media (and probably the aspect that most resembles irl football) is the fact that the interest it draws comes less from the sport itself and more from there being players the fans can idolise and obsess over.
Khan Karkass summed it up best: people don't come to matches to watch them play, they come to watch him.
Gobbowl fans care more about their favourite player than the sport itself. In fact, for the most part they care more about their favourite player putting on a show for them than them playing well.
And this is something that's been present in all iterations of the franchise, in the different eras (except for Waven, but the game's not quite there as far as I'm concerned).
Back in Wakfu season 1, there was Kriss Krass, who was massively popular, even when I seem to remember he didn't even play in the first division back then.
Moreover, his main flaw was being a complete showboat, but it was precisely because he knew his fans cared more about him putting on a good show than about the actual outcome of the game. I mean, the man held back from utterly cursbtomping the opposite team just so he could keep the game going for as long as possible and his fans wouldn't get bored!
Then season 2 introduced Maude as the Masked Gobbowler. In Brâkmar. Where women aren't even allowed to watch Gobbowl.
And, sure, one of the main reasons she hid her identity was precisely because if she was found out, the lightest sentence would be her being banned from ever playing again, with the highest sentence being... Well...
You know...
But that doesn't change the fact that Brâkmar holds their best player in such a high pedestal the Masked Gobbowler had a say in legal procedures and how to deal with the accused party of a trial. With no one, not even the Prince of Brâkmar, daring to refute.
And in the end, after Maude proved just how amazing her technique is by saving the city alongside Kriss from the Mmmmmporg's rampage, Brâkmar started treating having a girl as their best player as a badge of honour (if only because they thought it proved their superiority over Bonta).
And then we have the Dofus Era with Khan Karkass.
Khan, who was introduced looking for new team members with the sole purpose of making himself look better, because that's what the fans wanted. They wanted Khan. Everybody else was little more than a living prop meant to make him shine.
His fame was so great that you could say it overshadowed even Jashash's. Because even though the match was supposed to commemorate him and his sacrifice, what everyone really came to see was Khan play. Even the announcer gave so much more importance to Khan's presence over Jahash's feats.
And, again, the fans seemed to care much more about Khan as an icon than they did his actual skills. Now, don't get me wrong, Khan genuinely was a talented player, more importantly, one that recognised true talent. And Marilyn possessing his body and playing bad on purpose was a great factor in the fans' disillusionment over him during the climax.
However, it should be pointed out that what horrified them first was Marilyn shaving Khan's hair. Because that simple action shattered their ideal image of him. If they truly cared more about the sport, they wouldn't have even batted an eyelash.
(Again, this is a reflection of real life, where the moment a famous player makes a drastic change to their appearance, social media is already flowing with comments about it).
But no. They were horrified because they idolised Khan as a source of entertainment much more than they liked the actual sport, and his hair was his trademark. Getting rid of it was getting rid of what made Khan an object of envy and desire. And Marilyn, as fellow Khan Karkass Stan and scorned admirer, knew that. He knew it better than anyone. That's why he did it.
And I don't know wny I chose to fixate on this today and overanalyse a relatively small aspect of the franchise. I just guess this is all a neat piece of world building.

Everything we know about what happened to Khan, Bakara, and Lilotte after the movie
Despite the fact that the second Dofus movie has not been made (and, from the way things are looking, might never be made at all) we know quite a bit about what happened to its characters afterward — the reason for that is simple: they're referenced in the games!
In this post, I will try to compile everything we know for the ease of access — but I implore you, instead of using my abridged compilation, just watch my video archive instead, if you're really interested in these characters! The posts I make on the MMOs are entirely recapping everything I already went over in my videos.
BAKARA JURGEN
The Dofus MMO takes place approximately 200–300 years after the events of the movie, and 70–90 years after a genocide against Huppermages has been enacted by Bonta, which forced their people to go into hiding. (you can read more about this in my posts about the Dofus MMO!)
Despite such a long time having passed, one can still find people who look up to her in the world — including Kerubim Crepin, who reminisces on having known her, her brother, and her sister-in-law, before all of them were gone...
There isn't a lot of that is known about her life (or her involvement with Khan, and whether they ever became a couple...) but what we do know is that she grew to be a very well-respected leader and role model among huppermages, and lived a long, fruitful life.
And also that, just like literally everyone in the cast of the movie, she either lied her ass off about everything that happened in it, or the legends have distorted the truth badly.
By the time of Dofus MMO, Jahash and Julith are both viewed as icons and role models by the Huppermage community. It is quite likely that, at least in part, this is the case due to Bakara's (and then Agata, her heir/apprentice/daughter-figure's) efforts to not let their memory be forgotten.
Agata never discusses Bakara in her dialogues pertaining to Bonta's genocide of Huppermages, and when coupled with Kerubim saying that Bakara is "just a part of the history now" during his own dialogue on the topic, there is a heavy implication that Bakara did not live long enough to see this tragedy — and that her passing is not a fresh wound.
LILOTTE DELAGRANDVENTURE
There is even less known about her fate, but some things are pretty obvious: she had a family of her own — and she is still venerated as a great ancestor even six centuries later, by her great-great-great grandchildren.
You can find a descendant of hers in the Wakfu MMO, as a political leader in a tradition-obiding ouginak tribe, which is a very long cry from the way Lilotte and Indie led their lives as city-dwelling ouginaks.
For context, there is a bit of a... conflict, between these two lifestyles, which makes this development quite interesting:
I feel like this dialogue just speaks for itself, when it comes to the way people like Indie, Lou, and Lilotte are viewed by Ouginaks at large...
Considering the history of oppression that Ouginaks have, it is quite understandable why a lot of them want to live in an independent community of their own people — instead of molding themselves to fit the norms set by the followers of the Twelve gods; and why they may look down on their fellow Ouginaks who do not share this sentiment.
Lilotte's bell is a known relic, and her legend is still known — albeit with major alterations, which are most likely the result of six centuries having passed.
:)
KHAN KARKASS
I have saved all content regarding him for last, because he is the one we know the most about — from the plans to include him in Welsh & Shedar, to his inclusion in the Wakfu MMO.
He is buried next to the stadium, with his Gobbowl cup — the greatest achievement of his life... despite him having years of life after it, as an adventurer. A bit sad, isn't it?
Here's what he says about his life:
And here's him getting Joris's age wrong, lmao:
I debated including what we know about him in Welsh & Shedar in this post... but it's a bit of a beaten horse, by now, so I will just give the simple rundown:
In Welsh & Shedar, Khan and Joris seem to be pretty close, reportedly having adventured together after Khan's knee injury. Khan can be seen spending time together with Joris even in the trailer.
It is easy to assume that by this point, that with Joris being 60-years-old, most other mortal loved ones of Joris's have either passed away, or had their own lives to deal with, not having much time to spend together, which is pretty sad.
Considering the fact that instead of spending his time with Bakara, he is seen alone as an old man, it might be possible that she passed away before him or that their romance did not work out.
Another reason to believe their romance may not have worked out is the fact that neither Bakara's, nor Khan's fans, mention them being an item.
He also had the stories about him morph... but somehow, I really doubt that it wasn't his own damn fault.

the rule of fandoms is that if someone has a character in their url or bio they either understand that character well enough to give a 3 hour unscripted lecture on the subject OR they're really obsessed with their version of that character thats an entirely different made up guy. and theres literally never an in between
#in 2008 there was a cancelled ds game about joris. the dofus movie was in production hell since 2008 together with it.#joris canonically prefers well made steaks and cute aprons according to the manfra.#despite living in bonta during the movie and the ovas according to the mmo he has lived in other places in the centuries between those.#joris had a deeply personal falling out with ebony dofus which is funny.#he is implied to have a very weird and silly antagonistic relationship with ush. also remington robbed the crepin-jurgen residence.#both of which make ova funnier.#Joris was in wakfu as a tie-in character for the upcoming game and movie but both got in development hell.#But his actial start was as a concept art for a joke character who is cursed to sound like a woman and carries a huge log#that gives him magic power#Joris condones in-app purchases and microtransactions (pre-alubera dofus touch update)#Joris owns Khan's fishing rod (and Khan's only redeeming quality as a character was being Joris's support system after the movie)#joris has lived through the huppermage genocide that followed leorictus sheran sharm's cringe reign.#but very probably did not go to rok island with other huppermages to hide out. both because of family and because i think he's too stubborn#He is also now probably Bonta's most mentally ill regent. but probably not *the* most morally gray.#despite becoming a nationalist or having a spy network or the warcrimes. that's just normal ''ruling a country'' thing.#and joris's birthday is on 32rd of december. which is the krosmoz equivalent of being born during a leap year. AND it's new years eve.#sucks to suck!#also in the years after the huppermage genocide - dofus mmo times - atcham kerubim and joris have a divorce arc#because atcham is off doing crimes kerubim is being friends with the player character and joris is Working#so needless to say this was stressful as shit to all of them.#its quite interesting to think about the fact that joris grew up with a man who himself was an orphan#in an environment of neglect and depression. and that he idolizes and adores his flawed adoptive father#(who may see some of himself and some of his brother in him.)#anyway sdhfjfsihdhfhdjs i hope im the first one. but sometimes i worry im the second one 🥺🥺🥺#... yeah this is going into The Tag#crepinposting

Scrapped Welsh&Shedar animations
Animator Masahiko Kubo who worked for Ankama Japan over 10 years ago has recently created a twitter account and posted a few animations from his time working on the first iteration of the Welsh&Shedar Dofus cartoon (thanks to Catsuka for reporting this or I wouldn’t have realized).
This version of the series is very different from the trailer we know, with an animation style more akin to that of the Nox special episode. This is no surprise, as a lot of people from Ankama Japan went on to work in Science Saru after the studio’s closure!
Here’s an animation of the Ecaflip girl we see on the trailer: https://twitter.com/_masahiko_/status/1607224810123235329
And another one (unfortunately only the first one can be a video, the rest will be gifs): https://twitter.com/_masahiko_/status/1597425124285857793
You'll find a few more animations of her if you scroll down the artist's media tab!
And then we also find an animation of someone who seems to be a prototype of Khan Karkass (who was not a gobbowl player until the last iteration of the Dofus movie, years later). https://twitter.com/_masahiko_/status/1609761529720700930
As a small addition, here's the other two versions of the ecaflip girl.

In general, Goultard’s and Joris’s bond makes sense. Both are essentially immortal. Therefore, they may well get along and even become friends. Just like Joris with Khan many years ago. Kerub and Atcham, although they are ecaflips with 9 lives that can be reborn, are still not immortal (I could be wrong). Someday there will come a time when Kerub and Atcham will not reborn again…
I constantly think about concept art “what Joris would look like as an adult if he was not hosting Dardondakal”. I still can’t believe that there is real concept art with his “true appearance”.
It turns out that Joris’s facial features are like his mother’s and his hair and eye color are like his father’s.
Please, someone draw him like this but as an adult 🥺
Also this means that we now officially have another couple in the style of “reckless Iop and the tired of life blond character.”(if you know what I mean; yea Goultard and Joris)
It’s actually interesting that in the animated series(both wakfu and dofus) Iop characters usually fall in love with blondes.

Dofus: The Production - what is left of the old movie
Originally, the movie was supposed to tie in with the game and the Welsh & Shedar series, and be a trilogy.
As we had already explored on this blog, this did not happen for a variety of reasons.
Welsh and Shedar got cannibalized by other projects due to its cancellation, and the script of the movie "Dofus Book 1: Joris Jurgen" had to be completely rewritten from its old plot;
In that movie, Joris was likely supposed to be a street urchin, who survived together with Lilotte, who was a rogue, and the trailer we have for the older version of the movie reflects that:
As we can also see from the trailer, and the poster featured earlier, proto-Kerubim is also a part of the movie, and Khan was not yet meant to be a boufbowler.
(And considering the posters, the cat that inspired Kerubim's design was also a part of the movie. I wonder if it's related to Welsh's cat from Welsh and Shedar? But maybe I'm just crazy.)
Subsequently, the movie came out at a much later date than planned originally.
(two images included because, bizarrely, there are two versions - one with Joris's tail censored, and the other with his tail uncensored. This proves that already at this point they had a draconic backstory in mind for him, though we do know that at the time of Wakfu season 1 (and, likely, the cancelled DS game, as was noted in my post about it) it was not the case.)
Also, interestingly, it is the only art of this time to include the tail. A possible error on Xa's part, or something that was considered very briefly?
In the end, Kerubim (as well as Simone) swallowed up not just the design of Welsh's cat, clothes, and Ecaflip friend;
He also got the role Julith was supposed to have, both metaphorically, and also literally.
Or not entirely — considering the fact that Joris was supposed to spend time with him anyway, since we have art of Joris on his mount from that old draft.
It's quite interesting, to think of all that could have been different in the 2009-2012 version of the movie!
But even during the making of the second draft of the movie, a lot of things have changed. From the first idea of Joris winning Kerubim back at a pachinko machine, to the concept art of Joris's non-possessed appearance.
The movie was being actively rewritten at the time of the making of Aux Tresors, so some of the early drafts were already tied in with its canon — taking place in Astrub, to be specific — but not with its ending, because the show was still ongoing.
At one point there was supposed to be a whole cast of Huppermage characters, and judging from the fact one of them is mentioned in the following text, they did play some sort of role in the plot:
It is likely that from this early draft it was decided that Joris would be a boufbowl fan, which was then worked in as a plot point in Aux Tresors.
(Stélina may be a proto-version of Bakara.)
It also seems that at this stage, it would be likely that Lilotte was reworked to be the Princess of Bonta, before eventually becoming the Ouginak we know and love.
After this Ankama once again returned to the concept of Lilotte as an orphan, though — even when the movie was still set in Astrub!
And it seems that the draft involved travel between Astrub and Bonta, judging from the usage of a Zaap to attack Luis.
And even at this point they have come up with the tragically cut "Joris and Khan go to adult industry workers and Joris (10yo boy) engages in depressed underaged drinking" scene.
(I'll never forgive Ankama for cutting this. I still argue that it's in character for Khan, our detested/beloved turbovirgin, to do this — as long as he doesn't get together with any of the women due to thinking himself "too good" for them.)
Also, at some point the gods were supposed to play a role. And personally, I am glad it was cut — it feels a bit too grand for the first movie in what was supposed to be a series.
I don't have any grand statement, or conclusion, but it is interesting to see all the ways the movie has changed.

Bilimbi asks: "Question, can one of the Tofu Brotherhood could be lgbt for you? If you had more freedom (no censorship) would you have brought more openly the queer characters?"
Tot: "Honestly not, I do what I want, we do not get censorship at least not in this subject. To me, you need everything to do a world and I place the characters' sexualities according to what story I want to tell about them or their entourage. Renar and Canar in Sadida Kingdom are inspired by Albin and Renato from "La Cage aux Folles". In the context of Sadida Kingdom I can make them effeminate to show the Kingdom is open-minded. The Sadida have a rather "hippie" community. Marline in the Dofus movie allows Khan to face his toxic virility (people were angry about this character who I love). Simone and Julie are more reserved without hiding it. Atone is non-gendered. Alibert is homosexual. Judith and Jahash are bi. The dragons are asexuals*... Anyway the idea is not to appropriate some subjects/fights but it would be very dumb from us, in a universe so vast, to present characters having all the same "tastes". "
*I want to point out that the word he used is "asexué" and it does get translated by "asexual" BUT it is a word that is also used to say "sexless". It is unclear to me what he really meant because he seemingly does not know a lot of the lgbt lexical. But also, from other tweets, he seems to be welcoming any headcanon so the end word is Adamai is aroace
Absolutely and completely unrelated but i hc Adamai as aroace
That's it that's the post
