Khal is Reading: Incredible Hulk (2023) #1
So I'm officially starting to document in here and in my journey in reading comics here and what better comic to start than with the only ongoing I currently read, The Incredible Hulk! This will be a monthly review!
Directly continuing from the previous run by Donny Cates and Ryan Ottley, Phillip Kennedy Johnson (PKJ) and Nic Klein teams up to bring horror into the Hulk lore. Not that the jade giant have shy away from horror genre before (re: Immortal Hulk and basically the entire Hulk origin took a lot of inspiration from Frankenstein's monster)
As this was my first ongoing, I was very cautious. Hulk is the (western) comic character that I've read the most of and I've grown fondness to the character. From discussions I've seen online, I assume that Hulk is one of the luckier characters in terms of the quality of his solo runs. Minus Aaron, the Ultimate universe and the recently finished Cates run, there hasn't been a lot of complaint regarding his run throughout the years and I'm hoping that this next one would not be joining this tiny list.
And while I can't promise that the quality would stay consistent throughout, this first issue for sure brings a lot of confidence.
The story begins with an exploration team exploring hidden tombs in Al-Qadissiyah, Iraq and unbeknowingly release an ancient entity (seemingly connected to the green door) and ended up being possessed by these entities. They form a cult that claims themselves to be the child of the Mother of Horror. Meanwhile, Bruce is now dealing with a very, angry Hulk after the recent events between him and the Hulk (from the Cates run). The cult believes that Hulk is necessary for the new Age of Monsters and proceed to plan to go after him.
We also got introduce to Charlene, a teenage girl trying to escape from her abusive dad who encounters the Hulk on her run. Now, one of the things that I miss the most about the Hulk was his relationship with his sidekicks/friends. Whether it's Rick Jones or Amadeus Cho/Brawn and I'm hoping that Charlene will stay as his travelling partner for most of this run.
As for what I think, I think this issue was amazing. Like "that's what I'm talking about" amazing. Like "Please give me the next issue asap" amazing. I was completely suprised at how much I love this first issue.
I was always worried whenever the first issue just didn't have enough "juice" on it for me to keep me interested or starts off in the middle of a story and keeps me confused and this issue have none of that. We get to see where Bruce is now at his life, the antagonist for this arc (at the very least), and his new friend and a surprising cameo 👀
Not to mention the art. The art is gorgeous and it depicts the horror and the grotesque nature of the story perfectly. All the credit goes to Nic Klein and Matt Wilson for the beautiful art.
All in all whether you were already a Hulk fan or you're a comic fan just looking for a promising action-horror comics, I think this comic fits perfectly for you.
If you have some money to spare and don't mind spending it on comics, do pre-order for the next issue if you are interested (or don't! It's up to you!)
Also great news, the first issue is currently sold-out and they're planning for a second print. Congrats to the Incredible Hulk team!
Final Rating: 9.5/10

Can you talk about Dany's and khal drogo's relationship? Apparently, her falling in "love" with khal drogo (who is a barbaric rapist and slaver) is a sign that she will go mad.
Dany and Khal Drogo's relationship is a very complicated matter, but her falling in love with Drogo does not make her 'mad'.
Dany, when first wed to Drogo, was his bridal slave. She recognizes this herself within her chapters. She is 13, being sold by her own brother to a man much older than she is and more frightening, and she is obviously afraid of the marriage and Drogo as she is now considered his property and he is allowed to do whatever he wishes to her. She is powerless against him.
"The old woman washed her long, silver-pale hair and gently combed out the snags, all in silence. The girl scrubbed her back and her feet and told her how lucky she was. "Drogo is so rich that even his slaves wear golden collars. A hundred thousand men ride in his khalasar, and his palace in Vaes Dothrak has two hundred rooms and doors of solid silver." There was more like that, so much more, what a handsome man the khal was, so tall and fierce, fearless in battle, the best rider ever to mount a horse, a demon archer. Daenerys said nothing. She had always assumed that she would wed Viserys when she came of age. For centuries the Targaryens had married brother to sister, since Aegon the Conqueror had taken his sisters to bride. The line must be kept pure, Viserys had told her a thousand times; theirs was the kingsblood, the golden blood of old Valyria, the blood of the dragon. Dragons did not mate with the beasts of the field, and Targaryens did not mingle their blood with that of lesser men. Yet now Viserys schemed to sell her to a stranger, a barbarian... When she was clean, the slaves helped her from the water and toweled her dry. The girl brushed her hair until it shone like molten silver, while the old woman anointed her with the spiceflower perfume of the Dothraki plains, a dab on each wrist, behind her ears, on the tips of her breasts, and one last one, cool on her lips, down there between her legs. They dressed her in the wisps that Magister Illyrio had sent up, and then the gown, a deep plum silk to bring out the violet in her eyes. The girl slid the gilded sandals onto her feet, while the old woman fixed the tiara in her hair, and slid golden bracelets crusted with amethysts around her wrists. Last of all came the collar, a heavy golden torc emblazoned with ancient Valyrian glyphs." -A Game of Thrones - Daenerys I
"Dany looked at Khal Drogo. His face was hard and cruel, his eyes as cold and dark as onyx. Her brother hurt her sometimes, when she woke the dragon, but he did not frighten her the way this man frightened her. "I don't want to be his queen," she heard herself say in a small, thin voice. "Please, please, Viserys, I don't want to, I want to go home." -A Game of Thrones - Daenerys I
Now there is the difference between the show and the books for their wedding night. In the books, Dany had said yes to Drogo when he first coerces her into sex with him. However, in the show, she obviously did not consent and was crying as he pushed her down. I feel the show had a better handle of that scene; as it was clearly very much r*pe, even if Dany did say yes within the books- she was still a child of 13 and Drogo was much older than her and had more power over her as well.
After that, Drogo continues to r*pe Dany in the books until she wishes to end her own life, and only her dragon dreams provide her the strength to keep going. Still, Dany is powerless against Drogo, and only lessens her pain when she learns how to "please" him through Doreah. She is still considered his property.
Dany only begins to really "fall" for Drogo when she becomes pregnant with his child. This is only after Drogo begins to treat her gently and value her more. Still, she remains powerless to him. After Viserys had died and she considers herself the last living heir for her family, Drogo refuses to fight to get her the Iron Throne or even sail to Westeros. He only agrees to do this after the wine merchant tries to poison Dany and Rhaego, and this is only because Drogo saw this as someone trying to harm what he considers his property/wife and son.
When Drogo raids the Lhazareen, Dany is appalled by the violence. She tries to harden her heart to it, but in the end she can't turn away from it, and saves as many women she can by taking them as 'hers'. This was a daring move that even Dany acknowledges. When she speaks to Drogo, she wonders if she stepped too far out of line with him for her actions.
"It pleases me to hold them safe," Dany said, wondering if she had dared too much. "If your warriors would mount these women, let them take them gently and keep them for wives. Give them places in the khalasar and let them bear you sons." -A Game of Thrones - Daenerys VII
When Drogo dies and Mirri Maz Duur's blood magic and ritual take place, Dany is still powerless. She can only give commands to Drogo's men by threatening that Drogo would hear of them defying her. Even still, Drogo's men did not respect her, threatened her, and nearly killed her. Drogo was the one who gave Daenerys a position of power within the Khalasar, but even still it was very little and she still was powerless if Drogo did not agree with what she wanted; everything was up to Drogo and his decisions. Dany relied on him for protection and safety as he was the only man who could provide her such things when she was wed to him. And as it was shown, once Drogo began his downward spiral leading to his death, that safety and protection was immediately gone. Dany feared for him dying because he was the only one she knew that "loved" her and protected her.
Dany's "love" for Drogo was her adapting to her situation and doing all she could to keep herself alive and safe. It was a matter of Stockholm Syndrome. It was either Drogo or death for her. She was his bridal slave, his property, and he was the only powerful figure during that time that could provide for her and keep her safe. In her mind, it was love, but it was twisted and only came about because of her circumstances. Dany herself acknowledges the fact that she was Drogo's slave within the show when she liberates the people of Yunkai.
Dany's "love" for Drogo does not mean at all she will go mad. She was 13 in the books and 16/17 in the show when she was wed to him. She was a frightened child forced into a marriage to a man many viewed as a "barbarian" and "savage". It was either conform to her situation and endear to Drogo, or die. She would not have made it as far as she did if she hadn't adapted. To her, it might've been love, but Drogo was the man she was forcefully wed to and stuck with for the rest of her life as far as she knew. For her it was either make the best of it and continue on or lose her life. It was all about her survival from there on out, and Drogo was the only man she saw as being her protector for that.
Many Dany antis love to pick apart her situation with Drogo and turn it into a false narrative for their hate. The situation with Drogo and Mirri Maz Duur is always used to vilify her and make an excuse for her apparently being "mad" or terrible. They ignore the situation Dany was in and the logistics of it. She had no power, she was a child, and she was Drogo's property. Yet they love to say she did have power, when her only power came from Drogo and even then she was afraid of stepping too far with him. This was a matter of life or death for Dany. It's not 'madness' that she, a child, was conforming to her circumstances as best she could to keep herself alive.
Thanks for the ask! :)

“ When her son sat the Iron Throne, she would see that he had bloodriders of his own to protect him against treachery in his Kingsguard”
I jus found this to be interesting. Because Viserys is still very much alive and well, so by all means if he did restore the Targaryen Dynasty it would be his son that sat the Iron Throne after him. So Dany thinking about her son sitting the Iron Throne after previously asking Jorah could someone stronger than Viserys succeed in conquering the Seven Kingdoms with the Dothraki Screamers, is just sending off bells in my head.
I have no ideas where I’m going with this but I think this is where Dany is starting to desire power. Could be wrong but I shall see.
Also, I don’t like Jorah. He’s a weirdo. He got exiled for selling slaves but he’s trying to brush it off and just act like Ned was overreacting. I swear this man.
Also, if he wasn’t a Mormont and just some random peasant he would’ve have been killed.

Ah the irony, Daenerys Targaryen, first of her name and whatever, wanted to free slaves, worked toward that goal so determinedly and yet she met one of her most precious friends and a trusted advisor only because he was caught selling poachers into slavery! Oh gods I love Jorah, I like him but it's so funny😭😭😭
Also, if not for slavery, he might have(no might needed here tho) remained in bear islands, and would have been saying "we know no king but the king in the North whose name is Stark" With Lyanna Mormont😭😂

also, this is a reminder for myself to write a thing about why dany loved drogo, why she continues to refer to him as her sun-and-stars, and why she will always remember him fondly, keep him in her heart, and draw upon his memory for strength.
#;; i THINK I HAVE A THING *SOMEWHERE* ???? but i'm just gonna do a new thing#;; because i re-read her chapters in a.got recently#;; the main thing is *SAFETY*. Not me the DM drawing things that doesn't happen nor will happen this way nor will happen at all when I'm supposed to draw the dinner scene since my players were invited to Ravenloft nearly one year ago.
And not the energy to polish anything. I might come around them and polish. One day. When I'll draw the dinner scene. And the comic I'm supposed to draw for a year as well.
Anyway.
Rahadin's drawing background (c) i really couldn't trace back the artist but it's not mine.
Various references of kabedon used for the Khal / Vasili drawing.
I apologize for the brainworms and how I take your character without you knowing to put brainworms on canvas. Thank you @xyanmajor for putting up with my nonsense.

Khal have read: The Atlantis Chronicles (1990)
(tw: rape) if you ever decided to read the run, specifically in the end of issue #3
Ever want to know the lore of Aquaman's hometown, Atlantis (that is probably no longer canon post New-52)?
Well, look now further than the Atlantis Chronicles.
Written by Peter David with art by Esteban Maroto, this five issue run details the history of the Atlantis and the lineage of Arthur/Orin. This run also serves as a prologue to the Peter David's Aquaman run.
The chronicle in question is a direct order made by Orin, the king of the Atlantis, to his historian, Albart of Alcinor. As Orin has made some tremendous changes to the Atlantis, mainly through science and technology, he believes that it is necessary for their journey to be documented.
Orin is aided by his wife, Narmea; his right hand man, Rajar; and his brother slash rival, Shalako. Shalako and Orin's differences in their belief is the main theme of the run. Shalako is religious, and often prayed to the goddesses while Orin is more of a man of science. Still, Orin was civil with his brother despite their differences, including their difference in Orin's decision to build a dome around Atlantis.
That was, until the day a meteor strike Earth, causing Atlantis to sink (yes, Atlantis used to be on land) which changes their whole dynamic forever. Shalako later abandons Atlantis to find his own place as he no longer believes in Orin (as he believes the meteor was the result of the anger of the Gods who were angry with Orin's decision to build a dome). Along him was his numerous wives and his son, Dardanus. Their city was called Tritonis and they were called Tritonians.
As they now live underwater, Orin and his scientists develop a serum that allows his people to breathe underwater. He offers the serum to Shalako's people but a jealous Shalako prays/curses his people with fins and made them believe that it was Orin's serum that was changing them. That was, until Dardanus reveals the truth to the people. Angry, they proceed to kill everyone in Shalako's family excluding Dardanus.
The story continues with the constant battle between the family of Orin and the family of Shalako (through Dardanus, who despite betraying his dad, were still a spoiled, POS, who continues to harm Orin's lineage along with his son, Koryak).
My thoughts:
I personally really enjoy how rich the story of Atlantis Chronicles. While (I believe) the story is no longer canon post New-52, I still think it's worth a read, especially if you're planning to read Peter David Aquaman run. It has drama, it has tension, it has battle, it has curses and magic and if that's what you're looking for, then you'll enjoy this.
The art is very bright with a meso-american inspired design and the characters all look very good. I do wish they keep some of the aesthetics that they have in this run in the modern Aquaman run or even include some of lore in the run.
Orin and Cora (his daughter) are both very strong character and despite how I hate Shalako and his kin (Dardanus and Koryak), they were an effective villain to Orin's.
Rating: 8.5/10

How they react to...you getting injured
A/N: I hope this doesn't sound redundant but here ya go :)
Romantic Pairings: Ned Stark, Robb Stark, Jon Snow, Sansa Stark, Margaery Tyrell, Theon Greyjoy, Khal Drogo, Brienne of Tarth, Missandei
Ned Stark: If you got injured it would most likely be from falling off your horse during a casual ride. As the doting husband he is he would be rushing to your side and calling maesters to check on you. With only a small bruise to show for you try to get back on the horse but Ned doesn't allow it. He doesn't mean to control you, he only wants to keep you safe from any more serious injuries that won't heal as easy as a bruise.
Robb Stark: With Robb, he normally has guards with you at all times because he worries for your safety. When one of them turns out to be a spy with intent to hurt you, Robb is livid. You were pushed and left with a few bruises but all he sees is red. Robb sentences the man to die and takes his head for it. He spends the rest of the day with you in bed, feeling guilty while he looks at your injuries. You'll definitely want to console him cause he will cry, especially thinking of what COULD have happened to you.
Jon Snow: He truly believes in your ability to take care of yourself, but when you get hurt during a fight he rushes to your side without second thought. You'll both have to fight your way out of the conflict but once you're safe he checks on your wounds. He asks for a maester to check them out to keep out infection and feels a little useless not being able to do anything himself. Jon makes it a point to joke about it to take away the serious energy going on and promises to always have your back.
Sansa Stark: Girly is straight up crying. Doesn't matter if it was just a little accident or you were roughed up by some thugs, younger Sansa is a crier. When she finds you she's holding onto you with strength you didn't know she had. Unlike older Sansa who would be ready to pass someone's death sentence, younger Sansa only cares about you feeling better. She does her best to make you a prayer wheel like her mother does for her.
Margaery Tyrell: She'd be a lot more calm than you'd think, at least around others. Once she sees you lying in bed with your leg elevated, she's questioning the hell out of you. What happened? Who was it? Do you need anything? Milk of the Poppy? It's almost entertaining to see how much she worries in contrast to her usual cool attitude. After you assure her that you're alright she's cuddling up in bed with you, probably to read something to you.
Theon Greyjoy: Pre!Reek Theon would instantly be at arms and ready to fight whoever touched you. He's possessive and the thought of ANYONE touching you pisses him off but especially if they meant to harm you. He wouldn't know how to express his worry for you so he'd just angrily stand by you as you recover. Post!Reek Theon is deeply insecure and guilty about you getting hurt. He still wants to fight whoever hurt you but he's more concerned with making sure you're okay.
Khal Drogo: *Activate instant death mode* I mean we saw what happened when Daenerys almost got poisoned, think about actually getting poisoned. Having to lay in bed for days while Drogo goes out in search for whoever did this to you. It doesn't matter why they did it or if you die or not, all that matters to him is giving them the most painful death possible. When he's done, he sits at your bedside knowing you are strong and capable of overcoming this.
Brienne of Tarth: It was only a training accident but your messed up ankle reminded Brienne how fragile you were. She was born and raised to endure the pain that came with being a knight/fighting, but you never asked for it. She'll feel upset at herself for not teaching you properly and it'll come off as anger towards you. Truly she doesn't mean it but if being hard on you will keep you safe next time then she knows what she has to do.
Missandei: Tearsss. She's crying before she even knows what happened to you. Stays by your bedside as you heal from a battle wound and takes responsibility for changing your dressings and cleaning the injury. Missandei knows that this is the life you've chosen to live, but sometimes she wishes she could take you away to her homeland safe from any harm.

Characters Rankings | Out of five stars
Cersei Lannister : ⭐️
I can’t stand this crazy bitch. I hate her. I want to reach in the book and just choke her. Please let her be killed. I’m still in disgust and shock that she killed Robert’s bastards. She vile and disgusting. I'm not even going to get in to the twincest( GRRM needs to be arrested for that)
Jaime Lannister : ⭐️
He’s a weirdo, not the good kinds. I hope he suffers the same fate Bran did but don’t wake up.
Tyrion Lannister : ⭐️⭐️
I just don’t have any real feelings towards him. I don’t hate him, but I don’t like him. I did find somethings he said entertaining so. I like his interaction with Jon too.
Joffrey Baratheon : -⭐️
Inbred bitch.
Eddard Stark : ⭐️⭐️⭐️
He was an okay character. I don’t love him but I like him enough. He did annoy me for most of the book. His honor is just stupidity at this point.
Catelyn Stark : ⭐️⭐️⭐️
I thought Catelyn would be so horrible because of all the things that I heard but she’s just a flawed character. I like her enough. So a three star. That line that she send to Jon that it should have been him was so out of pocket.
Varys : ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
He was entertaining and he kept making jabs at Ned that I found funny. Also him being described as an egg was funny to me. Who doesn’t live a good dramatic and messy queen.
Petyr Baelish : ⭐️⭐️ | 2.5
He’s so creepy and I really want him to die. He only got the 2.5 star cause he was funny and he’s actually an intriguing character. He’s needs to back tf off Sansa. He physically makes me sick and I don’t want him on my page but I want to see what he scheming.
Samwell Tarly : ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
My sweet baby. In my mind he’s chunky and sad, I love it.
Jon Snow : ⭐️⭐️⭐️ | 3.5
I actually like him better than the show. He atleast have more personality in this. His inner thoughts are funny too(Calling Tyrion a gargoyle, Myrcella insipid and even how he’s better than the other Black Brothers.)
Bran Stark : ⭐️⭐️
His chapters are the reason I didn’t finish the book faster. It gets more interesting in the next book I heard, so.
Sansa Stark : ⭐️⭐️⭐️
She over-hated. I liked her. She can be naive but she only eleven so it can be excused. People seem to hate her because she fits into the society that she was born into and thinks she some bully but who did she really bully. She was mean to Arya and Arya was mean to her, so. I love the vibes she gave off, I love girly girls in fantasy. They're usually treated horrible by the authors and hated by fans but I always eat them up. Anyways, I didn’t get to spend too much time with her to give her any higher ranking.
Arya Stark : ⭐️⭐️⭐️
She’s a rebellious nine-year old and I support it. I don’t normally like the tomboy characters and that’s because I always read it in YA and it’s always so sloppy, but I liked Arya. I think I need to spend more time with her though for any higher ranking. Loved her relationship with Jon. I wanted more of than. It was just an wholesome brother-sister dynamic. Jon feels outcasted cause he’s a bastard and Arya because she can’t fit into the societal norm. I really like their interactions. Arya is a character that has the potential to become a character I can like.
Daenerys Targaryen : ⭐️⭐️ | 2.5
It could been higher but I just didn’t vibe with the slavery aspect of her chapters. I just don’t like it. And like Arya and Sansa, I didn’t spend enough time with her.
I’m happy she freed from Viserys and Khal Drogo. Apparently she gets better and so does the whole slavery aspect, but I hope she doesn’t become a white savior. I really hope not, I really want to like her.
Another reason she not higher is because of Mirri maz duur.
Her killing Mirri maz duur will never sit right with me. It felt like she killed Mirri( who was a slave) for harming Khal (who was her master) and I didn't like it. Also the whole idea that Mirri did it to teach Dany a lesson is ridiculous. What would she have to gain by teaching Dany this lesson. Also we have no prove she went out of her way to harm Dany.
Khal Drogo killed himself. She told him what not to do while the herb is on him and he went against. She told them no one is to enter the tent while she was performing the rituals and Jorah brought Dany in still. That's not her fault. There’s no actual proof but just Dany bias and warp idea of things ( Just because it’s from Dany’s point of view doesn’t meant it’s factual. She’s grieving and her mind if looking for someone to place blame on) I just don’t like how she died and it’s really making it difficult to enjoy Daenerys.
Jorah Mormont : ⭐️
I don’t like him at all. He was selling slaves and he’s not even trust worthy. Am I hoping some misfortune fall on him? Yes, very much so.
Lysa Tully : ⭐️
She’s mental. I wanna see her ‘fly’. Her attachment to her son is weird. It’s very weird. Why is she still breastfeeding him. She weird.
Robert Baratheon : ⭐️
He’s a rapist, let’s be real. He’s an abuser and a neglectful father( I know it’s not his kids, but he didn’t know that) He’s an horrible king and he just shut his eyes to everything going on around him. Not to mention he’s obsessive. How are you obsessing over someone you didnt know. Also the 15 year old he got pregnant and then told Ned he doesn’t care about. Disgusting. The way he just fathers bastards and leave them to suffer. He probably knew Cersei killed his bastards and didn’t care. Yuck!
Sandor Clegane : ⭐️
I don’t care how traumatized he is, trauma is not an excuse to be an abuser or harm others. He needs to stay away from Sansa ( all these creepy and nasty men need to leave her alone) and I don’t want him near Arya either( In the show she was depicted has having a mentorship with him and I don’t want it). There’s nothing he can teach her, nothing I want him to teach her. He needs to go and find help and stay away from them. He’s a grown man that takes out his trauma on little girls and that’s disgusting. He’s disgusting.

Let's...let's put aside khal drogo for a moment, tho our opinion varies. Let's put everyone aside because there are so many ways to refute it but Jorah Mormont, because this point hurts me more than any other, you know why? Because I loved the show Jorah, I didn't get the extent of his antipathy and sick mind and I loved him.
And then you read this in book-
“I’ve told the khal he ought to make for Meereen,” Ser Jorah said. “They’ll pay a better price than he’d get from a slaving caravan. Illyrio writes that they had a plague last year, so the brothels are paying double for healthy young girls, and triple for boys under ten. If enough children survive the journey, the gold will buy us all the ships we need, and hire men to sail them.
Oh tell me, please tell me how this unrepentant slaver "deserved" Dany's kindness and forgiveness!
I've got nothing else to say!
She loved khal drogo, named her dragon after him(which btw wtf no) enjoyed when he talked about raping westerosi women and taking children as slaves and then she went on killing "others" Because they were slavers, keeps jorah Mormont with her even though he was exiled because they caught him selling slaves but then exiles him the moment she learns of him spying on her! Oh man such a hypocrite, such a fucking hypocrite!
#would say more after reading the whole series#but rn#jorah mormont#is in Joffrey and ramsay list for ne#I don't even want to talk about Khal drogo and his khalasar because they atleast have an excuse#that was their culture#but this man?#this man comes from different society#(well...he was exiled because of slavery so)#ned stark wronged him? lol#big lol#asoiaf#game of thrones#daenerys targaryen#got
