From the Racetrack To Space: IWC Schaffhausen and the Polaris Program Give Lewis Hamilton Astronaut Flight Training
Schaffhausen/Qatar, 26th November 2024: In a compelling new short movie produced by IWC Schaffhausen, Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team driver Lewis Hamilton embarks on a flight training for astronauts. The same training was used to prepare the crews of the Inspiration 4 and Polaris Dawn commercial human spaceflight missions. During the training day, the seven-time Formula 1 world champion and IWC brand ambassador was accompanied by students from Dibia DREAM, a non-profit organisation fostering STEM education. Their presence is also a reminder of Lewis Hamilton's own incredible career journey spanning more than three decades and sends an inspiring message: you can be anything you want in life – a pilot on the racetrack, in the air or even in space.
One of the most successful racing drivers of all time, Lewis Hamilton is a multifaceted personality whose interests and ambitions extend far beyond his sport. The seven-time Formula 1 world champion is deeply fascinated by space and human space exploration. He has visited renowned space training facilities and repeatedly expressed his desire to take part in a space mission in the future if it serves a purpose and contributes to the betterment of all humanity. IWC Schaffhausen now teamed up with the Polaris Program and its Philanthropy Director and instructor pilot, John "Slick" Baum, to offer Lewis Hamilton an opportunity to experience the flight training that is part of the organization's programme of preparing astronauts for space. The Polaris Program, which is supported by IWC, recently completed the first of three human spaceflight missions. During their five days in orbit, the Polaris Dawn crew wrote history by successfully performing the first commercial spacewalk.
FLIGHT TRAINING IS ESSENTIAL FOR ASTRONAUTS
Fighter jet training has been at the heart of human spaceflight since the beginning. All early astronauts were fighter jet pilots, and experience in piloting a jet was an essential requirement for going to space. Flight training was also a key pillar in the preparation of the Inspiration 4 and Polaris Dawn crews for their missions. While the g-loads experienced in a jet or a rocket cannot be directly compared, as they affect the body in different ways, jet training still offers compelling benefits for astronauts. Most importantly, it allows the crew members to familiarise themselves with operating in a high-risk and high-consequence environment, similar to what they would experience during launch. While they are pressed down into their seats by several times their own body weight, they have to communicate with each other, go through extensive technical checklists, and monitor critical flight parameters – all while being mentally aware of their surroundings and prepared to act in case something unexpected should happen.
A COMPLETE SEQUENCE OF TRAINING MANOEUVRES
Lewis Hamilton's space training kicked off with an extensive briefing and inspection of the L-39 Albatros jet. John "Slick" Baum gave Hamilton a detailed overview of the manoeuvres they would fly and how they simulate different situations an astronaut experiences during a spaceflight. During their subsequent discovery flight lasting almost one hour, Hamilton and his instructor performed a series of manoeuvres. They practiced accelerations and decelerations to experience lateral g-forces, simulating the ascent of a rocket. They also practiced higher g-loads by banking or pitching the aircraft hard. A highlight was flying a parabola figure for a zero-g demonstration, during which Hamilton briefly experienced the feeling of weightlessness. A racing glove, which eventually began to float freely in the cockpit, was used as a zero-g indicator. In flight, the F1 pilot pulled a maximum of 7.5 g, which is more than astronauts typically experience on ascent. Hamilton wore a dedicated race suit featuring a "space mission" patch with his car number 44. He will wear the same suit during this weekend's race at the Lusail International Circuit in Qatar.
DIBIA DREAM STUDENTS SEND A POWERFUL MESSAGE
The training was also attended by a group of students from Dibia DREAM. This nonprofit organisation sparks social change through STEM education and recreational activities for underserved youth and has impacted the lives of 40,000 students across 32 states and twelve countries. The students spent the entire day engaging in a variety of activities related to space exploration. They also got a chance to meet with Hamilton and ask him questions prior to take-off. Their presence served as a powerful reminder of Hamilton's incredible journey, from his humble beginnings in karting at the age of eight to becoming one of the most acclaimed drivers in the history of motorsport. As the students cheered alongside the runway, they sent an uplifting message to youths around the world: you can be anything you want in life – whether it is a racing driver, a pilot, or even an astronaut.

The rapid spread of artificial intelligence has people wondering: Who’s most likely to embrace AI in their daily lives? Many assume it’s the tech-savvy—those who understand how AI works—who are most eager to adopt it.
Surprisingly, our new research, published in the Journal of Marketing, finds the opposite. People with less knowledge about AI are actually more open to using the technology. We call this difference in adoption propensity the “lower literacy-higher receptivity” link.
This link shows up across different groups, settings, and even countries. For instance, our analysis of data from market research company Ipsos spanning 27 countries reveals that people in nations with lower average AI literacy are more receptive toward AI adoption than those in nations with higher literacy.
Similarly, our survey of US undergraduate students finds that those with less understanding of AI are more likely to indicate using it for tasks like academic assignments.
The reason behind this link lies in how AI now performs tasks we once thought only humans could do. When AI creates a piece of art, writes a heartfelt response, or plays a musical instrument, it can feel almost magical—like it’s crossing into human territory.
Of course, AI doesn’t actually possess human qualities. A chatbot might generate an empathetic response, but it doesn’t feel empathy. People with more technical knowledge about AI understand this.
They know how algorithms (sets of mathematical rules used by computers to carry out particular tasks), training data (used to improve how an AI system works), and computational models operate. This makes the technology less mysterious.
On the other hand, those with less understanding may see AI as magical and awe inspiring. We suggest this sense of magic makes them more open to using AI tools.
Our studies show this lower literacy-higher receptivity link is strongest for using AI tools in areas people associate with human traits, like providing emotional support or counseling. When it comes to tasks that don’t evoke the same sense of humanlike qualities—such as analyzing test results—the pattern flips. People with higher AI literacy are more receptive to these uses because they focus on AI’s efficiency, rather than any “magical” qualities.
It’s Not About Capability, Fear, or Ethics
Interestingly, this link between lower literacy and higher receptivity persists even though people with lower AI literacy are more likely to view AI as less capable, less ethical, and even a bit scary. Their openness to AI seems to stem from their sense of wonder about what it can do, despite these perceived drawbacks.
This finding offers new insights into why people respond so differently to emerging technologies. Some studies suggest consumers favour new tech, a phenomenon called “algorithm appreciation,” while others show skepticism, or “algorithm aversion.” Our research points to perceptions of AI’s “magicalness” as a key factor shaping these reactions.
These insights pose a challenge for policymakers and educators. Efforts to boost AI literacy might unintentionally dampen people’s enthusiasm for using AI by making it seem less magical. This creates a tricky balance between helping people understand AI and keeping them open to its adoption.
To make the most of AI’s potential, businesses, educators and policymakers need to strike this balance. By understanding how perceptions of “magicalness” shape people’s openness to AI, we can help develop and deploy new AI-based products and services that take the way people view AI into account, and help them understand the benefits and risks of AI.
And ideally, this will happen without causing a loss of the awe that inspires many people to embrace this new technology.

TL;DR: Covid restrictions saved lives at the beginning of the pandemic.
Key Points Question How did state restrictions affect the number of excess COVID-19 pandemic deaths?
Findings This cross-sectional analysis including all 50 US states plus the District of Columbia found that if all states had imposed COVID-19 restrictions similar to those used in the 10 most (least) restrictive states, excess deaths would have been an estimated 10% to 21% lower (13%-17% higher) than the 1.18 million that actually occurred during the 2-year period analyzed. Behavior changes were associated with 49% to 79% of this overall difference.
Meaning These findings indicate that collectively, stringent COVID-19 restrictions were associated with substantial decreases in excess deaths during the pandemic.
Abstract Importance Despite considerable prior research, it remains unclear whether and by how much state COVID-19−related restrictions affected the number of pandemic deaths in the US.
Objective To determine how state restrictions were associated with excess COVID-19 deaths over a 2-year analysis period.
Design, Setting, and Participants This was a cross-sectional study using state-level mortality and population data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for 2020 to 2022 compared with baseline data for 2017 to 2019. Data included the total US population, with separate estimates for younger than 45 years, 45 to 64 years, 65 to 84 years, and 85 years or older used to construct age-standardized measures. Age-standardized excess mortality rates and ratios for July 2020 to June 2022 were calculated and compared with prepandemic baseline rates. Excess death rates and ratios were then regressed on single or multiple restrictions, while controlling for excess death rates or ratios, from March 2020 to June 2020. Estimated values of the dependent variables were calculated for packages of weak vs strong state restrictions. Behavioral changes were investigated as a potential mechanism for the overall effects. Data analyses were performed from October 1, 2023, to June 13, 2024.
Exposures Age and cause of death.
Main Outcomes Excess deaths, age-standardized excess death rates per 100 000, and excess death ratios.
Results Mask requirements and vaccine mandates were negatively associated with excess deaths, prohibitions on vaccine or mask mandates were positively associated with death rates, and activity limitations were mostly not associated with death rates. If all states had imposed restrictions similar to those used in the 10 most restrictive states, excess deaths would have been an estimated 10% to 21% lower than the 1.18 million that actually occurred during the 2-year analysis period; conversely, the estimates suggest counterfactual increases of 13% to 17% if all states had restrictions similar to those in the 10 least-restrictive states. The estimated strong vs weak state restriction difference was 271 000 to 447 000 deaths, with behavior changes associated with 49% to 79% of the overall disparity.
Conclusions and Relevance This cross-sectional study indicates that stringent COVID-19 restrictions, as a group, were associated with substantial decreases in pandemic mortality, with behavior changes plausibly serving as an important explanatory mechanism. These findings do not support the views that COVID-19 restrictions were ineffective. However, not all restrictions were equally effective; some, such as school closings, likely provided minimal benefit while imposing substantial cost.

saw the musical!!!!
not sure if there's a point to just noting every thing I liked about the musical in general (too much to count), but here are some bits i specifically liked a lot about the exact experience I had in orlando on the 20th of january 2025.
as is public information, the cast was Morgan Traud (Amanda et al) James Lynch (Adam et al) and Adam Forward (Lawrence et al). I would let any and all of them have my kidneys. There are a good number of recordings (within the context) of James and Morgan performing on YouTube. I have not yet found Adam Forward singing any of his songs, and he was so funny and perfect for the role that this is a crime. please let me know where I can see more than the 1 minute video my friend has of him cutting his foot off <3
I really specifically like the exact bit of condom dialogue during wrong place, wrong time that they gave us yesterday: (upon pulling out the huge strips of condoms) "would you believe these were a gift..?" "FROM WHO?" "...my mom" - (he may have actually said "my mommy", but I have the memory of someone who benefits from all the flashbacks in these movies) anyway I really like that way of doing it
every actor for Adam online of course does his faggy little voice but OH MAN. James was COMICALLY whiney the entire show. I cannot make it clear to what extent this was, because looking at videos over time is indicating that he started off like a year ago being a bit whiney and has ramped it up immensely over time
Is the pig mask meant to fall apart before the Amanda then/now song? the hair was on one end of the stage and the pig head was on the other.
At Lawrence's request for applause during You Make it Hard For Me, the crowd went wild. In the same vein, there were a couple bits where Morgan RELISHED in the applause. damn right queen. I believe it was after Amanda's first song she just stood and nodded. Then after the Alison/Zep fight she gestured for more applause when it started dying off and then silenced the crowd after a few moments (a la Farquaad in shrek the musical, if I'm honest).
Honestly I think the audience was just really reactive versus certain recordings. The first song was a bit of a struggle for me to hear, but everything else it really enhanced my enjoyment getting to have other people laugh along at the "key in your eye" bit and such. Like yes! community!
GOING BACK A COUPLE, there was a bit during You Make it Hard For Me where the blowup doll pegs Lawrence. Very Funny.
Another bit idk if it's regularly what happens, but when James went to break the mirror the second time, he entirely missed the mirror. hit nowhere near it. and then there was just glass confetti out of nowhere.
That happened a lot, actually. James and Adam both committed so hard to the shitty overhand throws that there were several points where they had to throw things twice. I may be misremembering, but when James had to throw Adam the key for the box, he essentially threw it at the floor 2 or 3 times, prompting "I've been on stage right this whole time" before there was a successful throw
"what are you doing?" "rigor mortis... bleh"
Every time an actor made eye/camera contact while I was photographing them, I was so embarrassed. i promise i was not bootlegging, I just needed literally 200 photos of what is to date one of my best days of all time
James duel-wielding sex toys trying to get the tape player
it was a small venue, so billy's handler started down on the floor with his trike after Amanda's song. he gave up after going maybe 5 feet and then carried it most of the way onstage
Certainly not specific to this showing but oh my GOD the apartment kidnapping combat goes so hard. Accidentally started cheering when she took that twink down, apologies.
Related: the violence of the foot-sawing and gunshot both hit so perfectly. both of them were so physically impactful, because Adam and James both lined up perfectly the blood/movements/sounds to the point that I was shocked it could be done with blood packs.
That is except of course when Adam seemed to recognize the splatters were not actually reaching the splash zone and purposefully started flinging blood into the audience. 10/10
Not technically in regards to the show itself, but afterwards I bought a bit of merch and was stood nearby to the table gushing to my friends when the man selling things got my attention to give me a not-yet-for-sale design they're testing for some sort of trading card of adam?? exhilarating, I feel so honored <33
Might reblog with more things as I remember them! overall I had such a splendid time and want to catalogue as much as possible because of aforementioned bad memory. I love saw and I love live theater!!! I wish this was a permanent installation in florida so I could go every couple weeks

human resources management pt.3
this post is the third part to my little business exam revision series. the reason that i am making these posts is to study for my exam in a more enjoyable way.
part 1 | part 2 | part 4
today's post (written 27-05 and scheduled) focuses on pay and remuneration, performance appraisal, and recruitment and selection.
pay and remuneration
these two items make up one hrm topic. pay (generally) refers to wages, salaries, bonuses commissions, incentives, etc.. remuneration refers to monetary and non-monetary benefits such as sick leave and gym reimbursement. the purpose of pay and remuneration is to attract and retain employee talent, as well as to boost productivity and foster employee satisfaction.
let's focus on one example from pay and one from remuneration.
one example of pay includes commission, which refers to monetary incentives awarded to employees for hitting sales targets or other goals. the benefits of commission include increased employee motivation and potentially higher pay. however, customer satisfaction may be affected if employees are too focused on earning commission.
for remuneration, an example is paid time off. vacation days, sick leave, and other types of leave promote work-life balance and employee wellbeing. this may be costly for a smaller business, so remuneration packages must be well thought out and other departments (finance, marketing) must be worked with to achieve a well-rounded final package.
performance appraisal
performance management is a continuous process of identifying, measuring and aligning performance with the strategic goals of an organization. features of this hrm topic include clear goal alignment, continuous feedback, performance metrics, and KPIs (key performance indicators).
an advantage of performance appraisal is an increase in employee engagement because an employee's productivity directly correlates to their engagement experience. moreover, when performance appraisal is done well, businesses see a decrease in attrition rates. high employee turnover results in greater costs of hiring, lower productivity, and utilization of resources and time to train new people according to company objectives. performance appraisal works to combat this and reduce the cost of hiring.
performance appraisal may provide a challenge for companies since the basic system is to try and create a one-size-fits-all model. this simply does not work. employees might also feel demotivated due to perceived unfair evaluations during appraisal.
recruitment and selection
this is the largest hrm topic so far - and can be broken down into three main parts. internal recruitment, external recruitment, and the selection process.
internal recruitment is the action of filling roles through promotion and considering current employees to fill gaps. a business may choose to recruit internally because it can be cheaper, and quicker, and the business already knows the employee. this means that the employee is already familiar with the business and its operations. however, internal recruitment creates new vacancies - then, external recruitment must come in.
external recruitment refers to hiring employees who are not already in the company. this occurs when companies are looking for new perspectives/ideas, increased diversity, or when old positions need to be filled (when an employee has transferred/been promoted).
this can welcome a wider pool of applicants, fresh ideas, and increased experience and skills. however, external recruitment does not always result in recruiting a person who fits the job (or company).
in order to hire an employee, a hiring team must go through the selection process. it is a process that involves evaluating candidates based on their qualifications, experience, and other relevant factors to determine who is the most suitable for a particular job.
a proper structure is vital for effective and efficient recruitment and selection. here is the typical recruitment process: - identification of job vacancy - conducting job analysis - preparing recruitment documentation - advertising the vacancy
the general selection process: - shortlisting applicants - conducting interviews and assessments - selecting a successful applicant/s, and offering them the role
when performing recruitment and selection, the hiring team must decide how to assess a candidate. the two most common ways to do this is through an interview, or an assessment (or a combination).
interviews explore the applicant's personality and attitude - as well as discussion of their abilities and skills. although, this can be time-consuming, costly, and it doesn't always lead to the selection of the best applicant available.
assessments also look at the candidate's abilities, skills, personality and attitude, but in a more on-the-job way. the pressure from assessments may limit the applicant from exerting their true capabilities.
///
the hrm topics explored so far include demographic change, employee welfare, flexi-time, gig economy, immigration, pay and remuneration, performance appraisal, and recruitment and selection.
thank you for reading! i look forward to any feedback or questions from other ibdp business students (or anyone interested in business).

What is the R-value of Residential Metal Roofing?
When it comes to improving your home, one important factor often overlooked is the R-value of your roofing material. If you’re exploring ways to enhance energy efficiency, you might wonder about the R-value of residential metal roofing. This knowledge can help you make informed decisions about your roofing needs. Let’s dive deeper into this topic together!
Understanding R-value in Roofing
The R-value is a measurement of thermal resistance. It indicates how well a building material can resist heat flow. The higher the R-value, the better the insulation. Understanding R-values in residential metal roofing is critical when considering overall energy efficiency in your home.
What Affects the R-value of Residential Metal Roofing?
Several factors influence the R-value of residential metal roofing. Here are some key components:
Material Composition: Different metal types, such as steel, aluminum, and copper, affect R-value. Each has unique properties that affect thermal performance.
Insulation: The thickness and type of insulation used beneath the metal roofing significantly affect the overall R-value. Common insulation materials include fiberglass, foam board, and spray foam.
Roofing System: The design of the roofing system itself, including whether it's a single-ply membrane or has multiple layers, can impact its effectiveness in terms of heat retention.
Why Choose Residential Metal Roofing?
There are many reasons to consider residential metal roofing for your home improvement project. Here are a few key benefits:
Durability and Longevity: Metal roofing is known for its resilience against extreme weather conditions, making it a long-lasting investment.
Energy Efficiency: Residential metal roofing can significantly reduce energy bills by improving a home’s thermal performance with appropriate insulation.
Energy Star-Labeled Products: Many residential metal roofs have reflective coatings that enhance energy efficiency by keeping your home cooler in summer.
R-value Comparison: Metal vs. Traditional Roofing Materials
The R-value of residential metal roofing may initially seem lower than that of traditional materials like asphalt shingles. For instance, asphalt shingles have an R-value ranging from R-2.9 to R-3.5, while metal roofing typically ranges between R-0.5 and R-1.5. However, remember that metal roofing's effectiveness comes from its R-value and overall performance when combined with proper insulation systems.
How to Increase the R-value of Your Metal Roof
If you’re worried about achieving the highest R-value with metal roofing, there are several strategies you can employ:
Select Quality Insulation: High-performance insulation will improve your roofing system's overall R-value. Aim for insulation materials that guarantee high thermal resistance.

Free DA PA Checker Tool
One of the most important free SEO tools is the DA PA Checker tool, which can evaluate the Domain Authority (DA) and Page Authority (PA) score of either a website or a single webpage by owners, marketers, and SEO professionals. Moz developed metrics for ascertaining the strength and credibility of a website in terms of ranking potential on search engines like Google.
Key Characteristics of the DA PA Checker Tool Domain Authority (DA):  What is DA? Domain Authority refers to a grading scale between 0 and 100, which signifies the general power of a website's domain when concerning the potential of rank-ability in search engines. The higher the DA, the better is the possibility to rank. Why is DA Important? DA depends on the quality and amount of backlinks, the age of the website, the quality of its content, and overall user experience. Generally, more authoritative websites with higher DA scores have better results in search. Page Authority (PA):
What is PA? Page Authority scores the potential for a particular webpage to rank well in search. It's similar to DA but looks at pages, not your overall domain. Why is PA Important? PA becomes really useful when analyzing specific pages that need improvement about their SEO performance. A high PA might signal that it's a page that has strong backlinks and has content aligned closer to what your target audience is looking for. SEO Monitoring:
DA PA Checker has the capability of letting anyone know how any website or page is positioned in terms of its authority, which further guides optimization efforts. Checking DA and PA enables a user to know where his website or page lies in the competitive landscape and lets him decide upon an appropriate SEO strategy: improving content, acquiring backlinks or bettering user experience. Free And Easy To Use
Many DA PA Checker tools are available for free, allowing users to input a URL and get instant insights into the DA and PA metrics without needing advanced SEO knowledge. Some tools may offer additional features such as bulk DA PA checking, which is helpful for analyzing multiple URLs at once. How the DA PA Checker Works Input URL: The DA PA Checker needs a simple to use the URL of the website, or a particular page you'd like to research. Metrics Analysis: Check of DA and PA is carried out with some factors including; Backlink Profile: It outlines the number of high-quality, diverse backlinks that are pointing to the site Content Quality: Relevance and optimization of content on the page or domain. Social Signals: Social media engagement indirectly impacts DA and PA. Internal Linking Structure: The way in which a site links its pages. Display of Results: The tool provides DA and PA score along with other data like spam scores which would help users identify risks and drawbacks. Benefits of Using the DA PA Checker Tool Quick Grading: It allows users to instantly grade the authority of the own website or their competitors' sites, thus making decisions easier on the basis of choosing an SEO campaign.
SEO Tracking of Performance: This tool helps owners track progress against time by checking DA and PA. They can understand how well their SEO efforts are improving.
Competitor Comparison: The tool enables users to compare their site's authority with their competitors' sites, allowing users to uncover strategies in order to surpass those competitors in search rankings.
Develop Backlink Strategy: Because backlinks have major impacts both on DA and PA, this tool is going to highlight opportunities for the link-building strategy to improve both scores.
Limitations of DA PA Metrics Good DA and PA are certainly useful lagging indicators of SEO potential; however, they should be out of the focus of an SEO campaign. These metrics are proprietary to Moz and are not indicative of what happens within the algorithms of other search engines. Moreover, DA and PA scores fluctuate for a multitude of reasons including the factors of algorithm updates and shifts in the backlink profile.

Primary investigation on ram-rotor detonation engine
Detonation is a supersonic combustion wave, characterized by a shock wave driven by the energy release from closely coupled chemical reactions. It is a typical form of pressure gain combustion, converting chemical energy into thrust efficiently. The concept of harnessing detonation to improve thermodynamic cycle efficiency and enhance the performance of aerospace propulsion systems has been a subject of interest for many years. Since the 1950s, various types of detonation engines have been proposed, including pulse detonation engines, oblique detonation engines, and rotating detonation engines. However, these three types of detonation engines encounter challenges such as poor thrust continuity, high starting Mach numbers, and insufficient performance gains, which limit the widespread application of detonation propulsion technology.
In a recent article featured in the Chinese Journal of Aeronautics, Dr. Haocheng Wen and Prof. Bing Wang from Tsinghua University proposed a new concept for detonative propulsion, called the Ram-Rotor Detonation Engine, which is expected to break through the limitations of the above-mentioned detonation engines.
“The original intention of developing this new engine is to improve the structures of rotating detonation engines,” said Dr. Haocheng Wen, “this concept is also inspired by the ram-rotor compressor.” The ram-rotor detonation engine, abbreviated as RRDE, mainly consists of a rotating rotor with blades, and a stationary casing. The blades on the rotor are distributed in a helical symmetric manner. The combustible mixture undergoes compression, detonation combustion, and expansion within the variable cross-sectional channels between the blades.
The authors performed primary theoretical and numerical investigation on the RRDE. They established a theoretical model to analyze the relationship between the propulsion performance and parameters such as inlet velocity, rotor rim velocity, and equivalence ratio. It is indicated that for the stoichiometric hydrogen/air mixture, the total pressure gain of RRDE can exceed 3. Furthermore, they also conducted numerical simulations on the typical structure of RRDE and obtained the characteristic flow field and propulsion performance of engine. Their simulation results demonstrate that the detonation wave can stabilize and remain stationary within the blades by the given configuration, and can adapt to the variations in parameters such as the equivalence ratio within a certain range. “Our study primarily verifies the performance benefits and operation feasibility of the RRDE.” said Dr. Haocheng Wen.
The authors believe that the RRDE has several advantages, including a simple and compact structure, high efficiency, and the adaptability to a wide-range of flight Mach number. However, they also candidly acknowledge that the realization of the RRDE is confronted with numerous challenges that demand resolution, such as the stabilization mechanism of detonation wave, supersonic boundary layer interference, implementation of high-speed rotor, as well as thermal protection, etc. “Our team is conducting ongoing research on key scientific and engineering issues in RRDE.” said Prof. Bing Wang. They expect the RRDE can provide high-performance propulsion for the supersonic vehicles in the future.

2.0 FLASH GEMINI ADVANCED 2.0 Flash (powering Gemini Advanced): This is the core improvement. "Flash" likely refers to speed and efficiency. It's the engine upgrade. "Gemini Advanced" is a product or feature set that benefits from this faster engine. The result is a general-purpose AI that is quicker and more capable in everyday tasks. This is like getting a more fuel-efficient and powerful engine for your car, making your daily commute smoother.
2.0 Pro Experimental: This is a specialized version of the technology, tailored for very difficult problems in coding and mathematics. "Pro" suggests a professional-grade or high-performance level. "Experimental" means it's still under development and testing. This is like having a special racing engine tuned for maximum performance on a track, rather than for daily driving. It's built for specialists and challenging problems.
2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental: This is the most conceptually interesting version. It focuses on reasoning, not just raw power. It breaks down complex problems into smaller, manageable steps, and crucially, shows its work. This "step-by-step thought process" is key to understanding how the AI arrived at its conclusions. This is like having an engine that not only runs, but also displays a detailed diagram of how it's working in real-time, letting you see each part of the process. The "Experimental" tag indicates it's a cutting-edge feature still being tested.
2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental with apps: This builds upon the previous version by integrating external tools (YouTube, Maps, Search). This means the AI can use information from these apps to aid its reasoning. For example, it might look up a concept on YouTube to understand it better, use Maps to analyze a location-based problem, or use Search to gather relevant data. This is like the same engine, but now connected to other systems in the car, like the navigation and entertainment systems, allowing it to make more informed decisions. It's about leveraging existing resources to enhance the reasoning process.
" 2.0 Flash now powers Gemini Advanced, making it faster and better at everyday tasks. 2.0 Pro Experimental helps you tackle the most complex coding and maths problems with ease. 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental uses advanced reasoning to break down complex ideas and tasks, showing its step-by-step thought process in real time. 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental with apps seamlessly integrates YouTube, Maps and Search into its reasoning process."

Powering your home with solar energy is a smart choice. As more homeowners embrace renewable energy, it’s essential to select the right solar panels for your unique needs. This guide will walk you through the process, from understanding panel types to installation options.
The Growing Popularity of Home Solar
Solar energy has gained traction in recent years. Homeowners see the benefits of reduced energy costs and increased property value. With improved technology and efficiency, solar panels are more accessible than ever.
Financial Incentives and Environmental Benefits
Investing in solar panels helps the environment by reducing carbon footprints. Many countries offer financial incentives like tax credits and rebates. These can help offset installation costs, making solar energy an attractive option.
Factors to Consider Before Choosing Solar Panel
Before diving into your solar panel journey, keep these factors in mind:
Energy Needs: How much power do you consume?
Roof Condition: Is your roof ready for installation?
Local Climate: Does the weather in your area support solar energy efficiency?
Understanding Solar Panel Types and Technologies
Monocrystalline vs. Polycrystalline Solar Panels: Efficiency and Cost
When picking solar panels, two popular types arise: monocrystalline and polycrystalline panels.
Monocrystalline: These panels are made from single-crystal silicon. They are more efficient and have a longer lifespan. Their sleek appearance is also a bonus. However, they come at a higher price.
Polycrystalline: Made from multiple silicon crystals, they are less efficient but cheaper. They may take up more space and have a shorter lifespan.
Thin-Film Solar Panels: Advantages and Limitations
Thin-film solar panels are lightweight and flexible, making them easy to install. They perform well in low-light conditions. However, they usually have lower efficiency ratings and may require more space.
Choosing the Right Panel Technology for Your Needs
Consider your budget, space, and energy requirements when choosing between these panel types. Each has its strengths and weaknesses.
Assessing Your Energy Needs and Roof Suitability
Calculating Your Energy Consumption: Using Utility Bills
To choose the right system, calculate your average monthly energy consumption. Check your utility bills to see how much energy you use. This will help you determine the number of solar panels needed.
Roof Assessment: Size, Orientation, and Shading
Examine your roof's size, angle, and exposure to sunlight. Ideally, roofs south of the equator should face south, with minimal shading from trees or buildings. A professional can assess your roof's suitability.
Professional Solar Panel System Design
Consulting with a solar professional can ensure your system is designed for efficiency and meets local regulations.
Key Specifications and Performance Metrics
Solar Panel Wattage and Efficiency: Understanding the Numbers
Wattage indicates how much electricity a panel produces. Look for panels with high efficiency ratings, typically between 15% to 22%. Higher efficiency means more energy with fewer panels.
Warranty and Durability: Long-Term Investment Protection
Check warranties on solar panels. A strong warranty indicates durability and reliability, often lasting 25 years. This provides peace of mind for your investment.
Temperature Coefficient and Performance in Various Climates
The temperature coefficient measures performance in heat. Panels with a lower temperature coefficient are better in hot climates. Consider this when selecting solar panels for your area.

WASHINGTON – Four weeks before U.S. President-elect Donald Trump takes power, all his rhetoric and appointments are indicating that his campaign's vow to crack down on pro-Palestinian sentiment in America will be a defining factor of his administration's early days.
Throughout the campaign, both Trump and the Republican Party insisted that such a clampdown would be quick and complete. After Trump's speedy cabinet appointments and ahead of a Congress ruled by a GOP majority, the fight against the pro-Palestinian movement might be one of the only things that has a clear path across the government.
Once Trump's picks for the top diplomatic positions are in place, such as Marco Rubio as secretary of state and Elise Stefanik as UN ambassador, the harshest step – the deporting of pro-Palestinian protesters who have student visas – could be the first move. Both Rubio and Stefanik are well-known proponents of such a step, one of Trump and the GOP's few solid policy commitments on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict during the campaign.
In October, Rubio wrote to the current secretary of state, Antony Blinken, urging him to "immediately perform a full review and coordination effort to revoke the visas of those who have endorsed or espoused Hamas' terrorist activity."
Stefanik, meanwhile, has doubled down on her star-making turn as university-president interrogator by calling for students' deportation. She told Fox News in May that these students "are pro-Hamas members of a mob who are calling for the eradication of Israel. They are calling for genocide against Jews around the world and in America. It is unthinkable that we are allowing this to happen at U.S. universities."
The blueprint is there
Other nominees more focused on domestic matters have also suggested that the pro-Palestinian protest movement will be a key issue. Among them is Pam Bondi, Trump's second attempt at a nominee for attorney general. The former Florida attorney general has called for a revocation of visas and condemned the campus protests.
The thing that's really the most troubling to me [are] these students in universities in our country, whether they're here as Americans or if they're here on student visas, and they're out there saying 'I support Hamas,'" she told Newsmax last year.
Bondi added: "Frankly they need to be taken out of our country or the FBI needs to be interviewing them right away."
Trump's choice to lead the FBI is controversial loyalist Kash Patel. While the former federal prosecutor doesn't have much of a record on campus protests, he is most notorious for his desire to remove any of Trump's critics and doubters from the national security apparatus.
Further, Patel's experience as the National Security Council's senior director of counterterrorism during Trump's first term positions him to crack down on pro-Palestinian sympathizers. A blueprint for this is detailed in Project Esther, a plan to combat antisemitism unveiled by the Heritage Foundation, which is behind Project 2025, the 922-page paper outlining conservatives' plans to fundamentally alter the government.
The underlying thesis of Project Esther – a more tractable 33 pages – is that "America's virulently anti-Israel, anti-Zionist, and anti-American 'pro-Palestinian movement' is part of a global Hamas Support Network (HSN)."
The task force's mission statement calls for a coalition to "dismantle the infrastructure" that purportedly sustains the alleged network. This would take one to two years. "Supported by activists and funders dedicated to destroying capitalism and democracy, the HSN benefits from the support and training of America's overseas enemies," the document states.
It adds that this network "seeks to achieve its goals by taking advantage of our open society, corrupting our education system, leveraging the American media, coopting the federal government, and relying on the American Jewish community's complacency."
The document suggests how a potential Trump administration would crack down on protesters, something he has promised. It also calls for the deporting of protesters in the United States on student visas and the targeting of universities' tax-exempt status. It notes laws that might "exploit [the network's] vulnerabilities," require representatives of foreign entities to disclose their connections, and target organized crime and racketeering.
Hardliner Harmeet Dhillon
One bill that will not be in the law books anytime soon is the Antisemitism Awareness Act, which is aimed at combating campus antisemitism. It also requires the Education Department to take the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism into account when determining if an action or practice that violates Title VI of the 1964 Civil Rights Act was motivated by antisemitism.
The House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed the act earlier this year, despite concerns on the left that criticism of Israel would be conflated with antisemitism and on the right that the bill had dramatic implications on freedom of speech. There were also tropes from far-right Republicans that the bill would state that Jews killed Jesus.
Outgoing Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has kept the bill off the Senate floor for a vote by attaching it to various other packages that he hopes to push through.
Amid this stalemate, another notable opponent has emerged: Harmeet Dhillon, Trump's choice to lead the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division, which will play a major role in enforcing federal action combating antisemitism.
Dhillon, one of Trump's top legal minds behind his efforts to challenge the 2020 election results, slammed the Antisemitism Awareness Act upon its House passage. "I have been a First Amendment and religious liberties lawyer for minority and majority faith communities for decades and this bill is knee-jerk anti-constitutional dreck," she wrote on X.
She added: "Do better, think harder, and be smarter, Congress. 'Hate speech' laws are a liberal concept." But Dhillon has joined her new colleagues in being a vocal advocate for cracking down on the campus protest movement.
"Sue Yale," she wrote on X in April. "Sue every university that refuses to keep students safe based on their religion. Make them regret their choices. Deplete their endowments. Sue each and every violent protester and organizers. Drain their bank accounts. Sow salt in their career plans."
Dhillon followed that post by laying into a protest at UCLA: "I defend the right of these jackass terrorist apologists to protest, but they do NOT have the right to block access to other students or prevent them from going to class. My tax dollars are subsidizing UCLA and the Regents need to get their act together ASAP or be sued!"
Linda McMahon, Trump's education secretary nominee, has also publicly committed to prioritizing the issue, even if the incoming president has vowed to dismantle her department.
"Certainly. I don't think we should have any kind of discrimination anywhere, and I absolutely abhor any kind of violence that we have seen on campus. It should not be allowed," she told Jewish Insider without specifying what plan she supports. "We have lots of priorities that I'm going to be dealing with, and certainly anything that is against the safety and welfare of any of our students will be a priority."
The proposed defunding of the Education Department is perhaps the plank in Project 2025 that most concerns the American-Jewish community. The Office of Civil Rights, which is responsible for investigating and adjudicating allegations of antisemitism, is part of this department and has opened at least 145 investigations into such complaints.
Hardliner Brian Mast
This past summer, a rare coalition of nearly two dozen Jewish organizations across the political and denominational spectrum urged Congress to "provide the highest possible funding" for the Office of Civil Rights, despite the deep disagreements regarding antisemitism on Capitol Hill and in the Jewish world.
House Republicans, though they deemed the office's funding insufficient, voted to cut $10 million more after accusing it of failing to prioritize antisemitism. Several Trump-allied Republicans have also highlighted the office's role in culture war issues like Title IX and what they call "forcing women to compete against males in sports."
Holding a razor-thin majority and already plagued by infighting, the House GOP might find that advancing legislation relating to the Palestinians is the only influential work it can get done in the next session of Congress.
In a surprise development, Rep. Brian Mast has been slated to chair the House Foreign Affairs Committee after Trump advocated on his behalf. The Florida congressman has long been considered the U.S. lawmaker most hostile to the Palestinians. He has decried efforts to bolster humanitarian aid for Gaza and dismissed the notion of innocent Palestinian civilians.
"I don't think we would so lightly throw around the term 'innocent Nazi civilians' during World War II. It is not a far stretch to say there are very few innocent Palestinian civilians," he said in remarks that led to an unsuccessful effort in the House to formally rebuke him.
Mast, an evangelical Christian, once volunteered with the Israeli military, and he wore his uniform in Congress in the days after the October 7 attack. That was a way to protest Rep. Rashida Tlaib's placing of a Palestinian flag outside her office.
Mast has also condemned the concept of a two-state solution while spearheading legislation to permanently cut U.S. funding for the UNRWA refugee agency, among other hostile bills. He has also slammed U.S. efforts to secure a cease-fire in Gaza and advocated for expedited and expanded weapons sales to Israel.

US State Restrictions and Excess COVID-19 Pandemic Deaths - Published July 26, 2024
