NO, but I don't think people understand. Can you imagine that first game after the news breaks about The Butcher of Baltimore and Jean's parents' arrest? Murder? Disappearance? (I don't know how the Yakuza plans to handle it)?!?!
Like people are gonna realise that the Raven turned Trojan backliner they cheered for was the son of some French criminal dons and the unhinged Fox striker that they watched all last year play with Kevin Day and have a public feud with Riko and who was insane on Kathy Ferdinands show was actually the son of a notorious killer/criminal kingpin who kidnapped him after a game and tortured him and then he went on to beat Riko, upsetting the Ravens winning streak, helping to make Exy history and then Riko tried to kill him on live TV?
Add Rikos' death, Kevins cryptic comments, and the Ravens' concerning and troubling behavior post TKM.
Like the sports fans and the true crime fans are gonna be fed for years on this. The Foxes and the Trojans will be inundated with press requests and the sales for tickets will sell out in seconds (great for the charities that the percentage of tickets sales go to thanks to Dan and Renee).
Also, how desperate do you think Kathy is to get Neil back on her show knowing what she knows now? The clips of the initial interview would go viral after the news broke, and it was probably already viral to start, given the drama between Riko, Kevin, and Neil.
Like the public would only know half of the true story and its still memeable, social media phenomenon levels of insanity.
Thank goodness Jean and Neil are equipped with emotional support blondes. Also Kevin.

helloo <33 i loooved your work with ren w a little secret perv and was wondering if you'd write any more of that sorta stuff?? thaaank youu
charli xcx - guess featuring billie eilish (official video)
600+ words, short and sweet, mc from this fic
"Okay, I want everyone to split off into groups to discuss the assignment...and please, try to work with someone you don't usually work with. It's called COMMUNITY COLLEGE, people!"
Ren knawed on his thumbnail as Kevin and Hassan from coding class talked through the upcoming project; a collaborative website build on a topic of your group's choosing.
Their eyes would occasionally go up while they were talking, to see if he would comment on their discussion or get involved with the conversation, but they would quickly go down again when they saw him looking off, pretending he was somewhere else altogether.
Though, he wasn't somewhere else entirely.
Just on the other side of the room.
She was looking right back at him, idly twirling a strand of her light blonde hair (her pink streaks were fading and were now a pretty cotton candy hue that he liked more than the bright pink but wouldn’t tell her) around her finger, a slight smile on her lacquered lips.
She was dressed in pink and white, as usual, accessorising with a black waistcoat and black legwarmers. Her nails were stiletto sharp and Kuromi-themed this week, and it made his mouth water.
Even if they’d been forced to split for this class, they'd already agreed to work together on the project, building a website for her eventual cat cafe game (that still didn’t have a name, but that was okay, he said, they’d come up with one together).
He didn’t have an eye for web design, so she was taking the lead on it. She was a much better coder than he was, in almost all respects, but she never made him feel bad about it. If anything, she liked any opportunity to help him, to speak on both their behalf, to take the lead where she needed to.
He might have been in love, but he wouldn’t tell her that either.
She raised her brow when he lowered his eyes to the desk, looking at the time on his phone; are you okay, the little gesture asked.
He smiled and shrugged, before putting his hands together and pressing them to his ‘ear’, miming a pillow; tired, he told her, adding a mimed snore with it.
She giggled (covering her mouth with her fingers like a girl in an anime) and shook her head, looking towards her group mates for a moment (who all looked about as disengaged as she was).
Thankfully.
She then smiled a little wider (a cattish smile, he might have associated it with someone at some point) and motioned downwards.
When he looked down, seeing her normal skirts and stockings, he watched as she parted her knees, showing off just how high her stockings climbed up and a peek of skimpy black panty amidst all the pink and white ruffles.
Ren's jaw instantly clenched and his eyes widened, just enough for her to notice and her cattish smile to grow even bigger.
His.
They were the pair he'd bought for her when she'd asked to be included in his last bulk order from Japan.
Naturally (despite wanting to do better than he had before), he'd indulgently included a few cosplay outfits and plenty of fetish pieces with the clothes she’d asked for (and paid for, which he’d sent right back to her), hoping to encourage her to take some risks when they were in class together, which, clearly, she'd done happily.
Because she was such a good girl.
He felt a pulse of heat rush right down to his cock, and he had to cover his mouth to hold back a groan.
She giggled again, always playing innocent as she looked towards her other group members who were huddling around a laptop, and spread her legs a little wider, making the lacy, black fabric dig into her a little more, riding up and exposing bare skin and the first sliver of her pink folds.
He reached down and pressed his free hand against the front of his jeans, shifting his hips forward and touching himself as subtly as he could.
She was really going to get it for riling him up after this.

also with my bleached hair thoughts yk how baseball players are really superstitious and bleach their hair before the final game or whatever i just think what if exy players did that too and Allison bullied Kevin into frosted tips
Oh YES like I know I’m a big kevallison stan over here but picturing Kevin sitting on the ground with a towel around his shoulders in between Allison’s legs while she’s sitting on the couch bleaching his hair? Hello? HELLO?
also I know the frosted tips are canon year appropriate but for a moment can we consider a blond/grey streak in his hair too

totally not rotating ur agent lads au in my mind.. sean D4 kermit
Anon we are so 🤝🤝🤝 they r constantly rotating. I have barely thought of anything else in the past week-ish tbh.
To round out our villains trio here- look at this smug asshole! He's probably at an interview or something, which is why he doesn't have his mask on. That's strictly Business Only.
Reference yet again by Mellon_Soup. V tasty 10/10
I'll accept more, but only for lads I haven't done yet! (ROTD Kevin, Seán, Brian, and Daithi, and Agents Dan and Daithi) Send in a color palette and/or an expression!
normal colors under the cut!!
Idk what compelled me to give him blonde streaks in this universe. I just really wanted to. He deserves it. Fancy rich asshole. I love him.

please go into detail about your grid as cats post! i love it and im curious why you chose what you did!
YAY ok so:
Lando: Being a Devon Rex is mostly about his curly hair and how well they match, but i also think they have similar pointy ears. Their personalities are similar to Lando's laid back nature, and they originate as a breed quite close to where he's from in the UK
Oscar: Oscar is not a fancy breed. He is a generic brown tabby cat at heart. All he wants is a sunny windowsill to sleep on and his wet food at 8pm every night
Carlos: Beautiful brown fur, round eyes, lanky proportions, and intelligent minds. Perfect match for Carlos
Charles: He would 100% be a cat you see in adverts and the Tiffanie fits this perfectly. Plus my cat book describes them as 'sweet and cuddly with a hint of mischief' which feels very Charles lol
Max: Bengals are very active cats, which match max's own work ethic and dedication to the grind. They have wildcat blood which matches his aggressive/relentless streak. Plus, Max actually owns Bengals. Snow lynx to match max's blue eyes
Checo: I struggled with Checo, but Maine Coons are quite chill cats which have become massively popular, which I feel go well with Checo's generally very calm and chill vibe alongside how loved he is by people
Lewis: He deserves something regal and stunning, and imo the Balinese matches this. Colourpoint cats look so beautiful to me and the long coat completes the look!
George: Bald cats also wear turtlenecks.
Fernando: The Persians i've seen tend to have quite intense personalities, for better or worse. Plus they are very common in the pedigree cat show world and have been around for ages which matches Fernando's story quite nice
Lance: Ragdolls are called this because they just go floppy when you pick them up. Lance is ridiculously unbothered so fits nice
Pierre: I mostly just think oriental shorthairs have similar cheekbones to him lol
Esteban: IDK what it is, but the guy just exudes tuxedo cat energy. Maybe the generally silly air he has to me
Nico: He would be a massive fluffy beast charging through the snow. Plus Norwegian Forest cats have the unique Amber coat colour which means they turn from brown to orange over time.
Kevin: A savannah cat for the same wild streak reasons max is a bengal. Savannah's are outcrosses with Servals.
Yuki: the bobtail existed way before modern cat breeds as a variant of cats common in Japan with tiny or no tails. They're also known to be very down to doing new things and are easy to teach tricks, which I feel matches how stuck in Yuki is willing to get
Liam: He's an orange cat with too much crackhead energy he needs to get rid of. Cream is a diluted version of orange which is like blonde and liam is blonde
Alexander: It would have been too easy to pick one of the many cat breeds from thailand, so I went for something a bit different. They are very easy going cats, and their curly fur reminded me of how alex has experimented with his hair
Franco: Very active, overly confident, and resemble wild lynxes
Valtteri: The mist comes in these platinum blonde colours and are australian, no notes
Logan: The american shorthair is a very chill breed and not as in your face and huge as the maine coon the other famous american breed, matches logan's quiet vibe well
Daniel: Very social cats (they will come to the door like a dog if someone knocks) with a curious streak. They will happily poke things with their paws. Their lovely brown coat is unique (chocolate solid is not common at all) and matches danny's hair

Perspective flip for glue?????
glue chapter ???
Paula had never been gifted with children. Granted, she had never wanted children - she was happy enough to be the favorite aunt to several nieces and one, potentially disappointing, nephew. She had her regular customers, her staff, and her lovely husband. She didn’t need anything else (she had wanted children, once. When she and Kevin had been together for the better part of ten years. But the time had passed and Paula had given up all hope of having them by the time she was fifty. Her restaurant was her child, in a way. Her family said it was pathetic, a group of drunk graduate psychology students told her she was being practical and a “girl boss” - whatever that meant). She didn’t have children, if anyone asked she would insist that she had never wanted them, but she had never seen a man so in need of parental guidance as Evan Buckley.
The first time Paula had met Evan it had been his first week in Los Angeles with those horrid bleach blonde streaks in his hair that were fading rapidly to a much more pleasant, natural honey. Her first impression had been that he was rather handsome, he came with a bartending license unlike the majority of their applicants, and he was good with the customers. It was also that his roguish smile and boyish charm was going to bring her in a lot of money. Her second thought, when it was his first shift and he had already flirted with half of her clientele, was that he was going to be a lot of trouble.
She had been right. Evan was a handful. He came with three fresh out of school frat boys that had all met on a beach in Peru that racked up an impressive tab that Evan paid with his tips at the end of each week. He partied when it was his days off, he fooled around with anyone with a pulse, Paula had caught him hustling at the pool tables once or twice with little success. He fought anyone that said anything mildly offensive, he was attached to his phone like every other boy his age. But he was also… he had a lot of heart. Paula didn’t know when it had changed, probably somewhere between him arriving and him showing up an hour before his shift with a big Firefighters Manual clutched in his fist and a look of nervous determination, but Evan started staying long after closing to help her and Kevin clean up. He started studying behind the bar in between customers, started rattling off fun facts at anyone that would listen about what he had learned that week at the firefighting academy, matured.
Paula didn’t expect him to have a friend like Eddie Diaz.
Kevin had hired him to fix their oven and dishwasher, the cash register even. He was a good, cheap worker that didn’t mind working odd hours or request they close up shop for the night for him to get what he needed to do done. He was quiet, minded his own business, and, best of all, was efficient. All Evan had to do was bat his eyelashes at Paula and she was hiring him - if Eddie Diaz was anything behind a bar like he was with a toolbox, she wasn’t going to regret hiring him.
He wasn’t any good behind the bar.
“Two ounces, Eddie, not the whole bottle, Christ.” Evan grabbed the shot glass out of his hand before Eddie could upend the entire bottle of vodka. Paula, from the booth she was crunching numbers in, watched almost nervously.
It had been two weeks and Eddie was a diligent worker, absolutely. He brought in just as many customers as Evan had, he worked with a determination that Paula almost envied, but she had only kept him on because he was better than Matt was - which wasn’t saying much of anything in the end. “How the hell am I supposed to know what two ounces is?” Eddie mumbled, his eyebrows pulled down low over his brow.
Paula pursed her lips and watched them through her lashes.
It was in between shifts that had the two of them invading her bar. The restaurant wasn’t technically closed, but the bar portion certainly was at ten in the morning. Evan had come just after his shift at the local fire department, he had shown up with wet curls and his casual LAFD t-shirt stretched over his shoulders. You don’t have to do this, Paula had heard Eddie mutter to him out of the corner of his mouth.
Evan hadn’t bothered answering him with anything other than an eyeroll.
Paula wasn’t blind.
She knew there was something between them. “The glass says it.” Evan pointed at the two ounce in near exasperation.
Paula had never actually seen him so visually frustrated and yet so very obviously entertained. He was tired, she had learned the signs over the past year in the slump of his shoulders and the way he was folded over the counter, but he was invigorated by the banter.
Eddie Diaz only ever really bantered with Evan. “Well.” Eddie’s cheeks reddened and he shrugged sheepishly. “I didn’t see that.”
With a quick, skilled twist of his wrist, Evan poured the vodka back into the bottle (Paula was impressed, she half expected him to throw it back like a shot - he would have a year ago. But, then again, a year ago, Evan wouldn’t have been trying to do anything with Eddie Diaz except disappear into the bathroom with him). He placed the glass back onto the counter and tapped his fingers against the line. “Two ounces of vodka.” He repeated in a much kinder tone than he had spoken before.
Eddie followed instruction, stopping just shy of an expert pour and glancing up at Evan with a wide-eyed quest for approval. “Good?” He prompted.
“It’ll be better in the martini glass.” Still, Evan winked and crossed his arms at the counter again, tapping his fingertips along the smooth line of his forearm tattoo. “You want one ounce of Apple Schnapps.” He pointed towards the bottle and, Paula watched, smiled down at the counter when Eddie wasn’t looking.
That wasn’t a smile she was used to.
She fluttered her gaze back to her papers with a frown.
She wasn’t quite sure if that was a good idea.

I can see you liking to try different colors but I don't think anything will beat the blonde on you. Really? Maybe I'll have to test that and dye it back to my natural color and not tell you then walk past you to see if you know it's me. It does and streaks are great things to break. I heard Kevin got released and that they're going to do more matches and less vignettes and storylines but don't let that deter you. So far it hasn't affected you and I'm not sure it will. You're doing a great job and it proves that you can carry the ball. When do I get to see you again?
blondes do have more fun, haha. sometimes i think about changing it up, but i like the blonde too much. if i ever do try something it'd probably be one of the temporary dyes that come out after a few washes, that way i can try it without fully committing. although i have wondered how a more platinum blonde would look too. i'm so used to you being blonde i feel i wouldn't recognize you if you went back to your natural look. i know roman and gunther both have long reigns right now, so i guess it's normal for everyone to want to break their records. at least it gives them something to work for.

rating the drivers based on their current haircuts
lewis: 100/10. undeniably the best hair on the grid. when he had his hair up in the two little buns(?) near the start of season I damn near became teamlh
george: 6/10. I personally don't think it serves cunt but it gets the job done. preferred his williams haircut but this one does make him look older so
charles: 9/10. to be fair I think any haircut this man could possibly get it'd still look amazing. life is so unfair
carlos: 9/10 also. ferrari should rebrand to the good hair team. mattia is not included because he wears a clown wig constantly
max: meh. 4/10. don't love it. to be fair I feel like I only see his hair when it's really gross and sweaty when he takes his helmet off
checo: 5/10. just a man's hair
daniel: 8/10 for the glow up. because godamn his hair in toro rosso was not serving cunt. it was doing the opposite. removing cunt so to speak
lando: 6/10 I am a lando curl enjoyer who also likes consistency. I have not been receiving either of that from him. to be fair like, he had that r e a l l y bad haircut a while ago which like anything in comparison is better, but max f's brother has not been doing his hair well I'm jusy gonna say it
mick: 6.5/10. he got a haircut recently and I really didn't like it. I can't exactly remember what it looked like before but I want him to go Back. I like it when he is boyfriend shaped
kevin: 6/10. viking hair. I respect it
alex: 8/10 for the red hair. personally I think he should bleach it and then re-dye it red so that him and I can match and also because then it'll show way more. but I think that's just me being selfish
nicky: 4/10. not a fan. can't really remember what it looks like (I'm writing all of these without looking a refrence) but I know I'm not a fan
seb: please don't hate me. please don't hate me. please don't hate me. 2/10. I don't like the long hair I'm so sorry please don't hate me
lance: -100/10. I'm sorry lance but what the fuck. his hair looked way better last season what did he do to it????? just like ferrari I think Aston need to rebrand...
val: 5/10. just a guy's haircut. neither here nor there but it's solid I suppose
guanyu: 9/10. very very very solid hair cut. looks good. accentuates his features. I like your cut g
pierre: 6/10. it's... okay. I really liked the blonde streaks he had during toro rosso. bring them back pls. or is there not enough money in the rbr budget for bleach
yuki: 5/10 okay I love yuki soso much yeah but I just Do Not vibe with the hair cut. I will let him off gently though because he looks like he takes good care of it
fernando: 4/10 it's okay??? I've never really thought about his haircut prior to this. can't say im a fan though
este: esteban I am so sorry but it's a 3/10 from me. there's just. so. so much better haircuts you could have
this is all in good fun and also just my opinion so pls don't take this as me attacking any of the drivers :)
EDIT: I manifested blonde Alex for you all ur welcome xx
#mait speaks#lando norris#yuki tsunoda#alex albon#mick schumacher#daniel ricciardo#george russell#carlos sainz jr#charles leclerc#esteban ocon#feel like i'd get on with alex the best based only on vibes#fernando alonso#sebastian vettel#lance stroll#pierre gasly#lewis hamilton

Foxes Reacting to Andreil
Hello! This is my gift from the @aftgexchange to @neil-jortson who asked for headcanons on the Foxes reacting to Andreil, and boy oh boy, do I have a lot of those. I hope you enjoy! These will be a mix of my personal thoughts as well as some written out scenes.
01 Dan Wilds
I think that Dan being an upperclassmen and captain gives her a bit of a protective streak over the Foxes, but especially the younger ones. We already see how she cares about her team in the books and I think she finds herself feeling super protective over Neil in a lot of regards. We see how she has an obvious disconnect with Andrew (though I think that does eventually change once Andrew starts letting people closer to him and the upperclassmen start taking the time to understand him better) BUT at first, I think she’s... nervous for Neil.
Neil and Andrew aren’t super public about their affections, but there is no way you can’t feel how they feel about each other or see it in the way they look at the other. But Dan isn’t good with reading Andrew - Neil, yeah, she can see it in the way Neil’s eyes follow Andrew as he jogs to the goal during practice, or the way he bristles whenever one of the upperclassmen make a comment about Andrew’s icy personality. Sometimes she fears that Neil has fallen farther then Andrew is capable of - sometimes she can’t see past how Andrew used to be and connect it with how Neil must see him. Sometimes she wants to tell Neil to be careful, even though she knows Neil is just as capable of watching himself; she can’t even begin to imagine what he’s been through. But emotions are delicate, and new, and difficult and she knows that well - so she can’t help but feel that Neil is setting himself up for pain. Heartbreak can be fatal, and she fears that Neil is walking directly into it.
This was how Dan used to think anyways but it all changed on one of their movie nights.
The main factor is that Andrew came which is still something Dan is getting used to. These nights were usually just the upperclassmen, and then Neil came into the picture and slowly the nights grew bigger. The other monster’s weren’t as much as a surprise as Andrew was when he stepped through the doorway into Dan, Allison, and Renee’s dorm room. Everyone was already settled into their spots, Neil had claimed the couch that Kevin was also seated on and had kicked out his legs - Dan had wondered briefly if it was for Andrew but it wasn’t rare that Andrew didn’t even show up. But sure enough, the blond man stepped into the room and made a direct beeline for Neil.
Like usual, Neil’s eyes lit up and a smile blossomed across his face at the sight of Andrew. But this time Dan looked over to Andrew - and she realized her mistake.
Before she had been studying only Neil’s own reaction, she hadn’t bothered to watch the way the tension Andrew carried in his face smoothed away at the sight of Neil. The way his shoulders loosened and how he moved like a moth drawn to a flame - the way the mask that she logically knew Andrew had, slips away to let Neil in.
Neil scoots over to give Andrew room and Andrew immediately flops into place, ignoring the way everyone’s attention has turned to him. For a moment, she can’t imagine how uncomfortable it must be to enter a room and have everyone stare, in wait, as if you are some monster about to snap...
Dan is maybe starting to realize why Neil gets so pissed at the careless comments of them.
Now, Andrew has settled into the couch, handing something to Neil from his pocket that looks to be a protein bar. Neil’s mouth falls open in surprise and Andrew scoffs.
“You didn’t eat dinner again.”
Neil sends him a sheepish grin, “Sorry, finals are stressing me out and I forgot.”
Andrew lightly hits Neil in the chest with the bar before dropping it into his lap. “ I know. Eat.”
For the rest of the night, Dan can’t help but glance over. Watching the way the two slowly meld into each other, and finally Andrew slips an arm around Neil’s shoulders and presses him closer to his chest.
Afterwards, she watches, not only for Neil’s reaction but for Andrew’s - and for the way that she can confidently say that Neil’s heart is in the safest hands they could be in.
02 Kevin Day
Kevin knew before Neil did.
He knew from the dance he watched Neil and Andrew perform nightly, the way they circled each other and Neil’s inability to turn away. Kevin knew it was the same for Andrew, knew that whatever was between them was pulling them closer and closer.
And besides, did Neil really think he was sneaky enough after night practices when he pretended to go to his dorm and then proceeded to follow Andrew to the roof?
Either way, when everything blew up around them and the world tilted upside down - Kevin wasn’t surprised to find Neil and Andrew together once the dust settled.
During the time after the Raven’s game, Kevin had his own pieces to put back together. He wasn’t focused on what his friends were doing, but they were there. Andrew still kept a strong hand on Kevin’s back - and even if their friendship had its own mending to do, Andrew was there when Kevin slipped and Neil was there with something akin to understanding but also the ability to light the fire under Kevin’s feet to keep him going.
The next year came, and the fog lessened and then Kevin suddenly became more aware of what was happening around him.
At the way Neil and Andrew always sat together on the couch, legs and arms pressed together. The way Andrew grabbed two mugs in the morning or how sometimes Kevin would walk into a room and Neil and Andrew would jump away from each other with flushed cheeks and messier hair.
It was nighttime though, when Kevin really saw it.
Neil was slipping, and no one was surprised. After everything Neil had been through and with his hatred of therapy - it was no surprise that his mental health was ending up in the gutter. Hell - even Kevin tried to convince Neil to go see Bee after he had heard a particularly loud argument between him and Andrew. But Neil had pushed him off, saying that just because Kevin benefited from it, doesn’t mean that he will.
So the nightmares got worse, and now Kevin sees them too.
With three traumatized men sharing a room, it isn’t rare that one of them wakes the others because of the nightmares that haunt them all. But it was never this bad.
Neil screams.
He screams like he’s being burned again, like his father is holding him down with the axe to his throat and Neil finally drops the brave act.
When it happens for the first time Kevin is flying out of bed - he’s lucky he’s been given the single without the bunk or else he might’ve knocked himself out but he’s clattering to the floor at the same time that Neil is.
His voice is torn, ragged, terrified and Kevin doesn’t even want to imagine what Neil actually sounded like when he was being tortured - hates to think that Neil probably didn’t even make a sound. But this was what wanted to come out - what needed too.
“Neil! Neil! Abram.” A new voice, Andrew’s voice, joins them as Kevin fumbles for the light. It washes the room in muted yellow, and Kevin already knows that Neil has fallen to the ground from the top bunk. Andrew is there, standing over Neil’s crumpled body with his hands outstretched to reach him but frozen. Unsure. His eyes are wild as he stares down, helplessly, at Neil, who curls into himself and sobs.
“My legs! He took them, he took them, he cut them, he cut off my fucking legs.” Neil gasps and it clearly snaps Andrew out of whatever shock he’d fallen into and he’s on the ground.
He’s pulling Neil into his chest and Neil is moving despearly to him, hands clasping onto his knees like he’s too afraid to touch further.
“Abram, stop. Your father is dead, you are at Palmetto and your name is Neil Josten. You are safe. No one is going to hurt you, not again.” Andrew reaches down and wraps a hand around Neil’s lower leg. “You escaped, you survived and you are safe. It was just a nightmare.”
Andrew’s voice is low, but still panicked. Neil’s eyes clear but Kevin doesn’t see them for long because Neil buries his face into Andrew’s neck. Andrew clasps onto the back of Neil’s auburn hair and holds him there, rocking them, whether unknowingly or not.
Over Neil’s shoulder, Andrew meets Kevin’s eyes. Kevin has only see the frantic look few times before in Andrew’s gaze, but Kevin clambers to his feet.
“I’ll get water,” Kevin says.
Andrew nods, wordlessly, before he turns his face to bury it into Neil’s head.
“It’s okay,” Kevin thinks he hears Andrew’s murmur, as he walks out of the bedroom “It’s gonna be okay.”
The next day, Kevin thinks he’s as relieved as Andrew is when Neil finally agrees to go talk to Bee. Or someone. Andrew keeps their hands entangled and doesn’t let go - they don’t usually pull away from each other now when Kevin’s around.
It feels a lot like trust.
04 Matt Boyd
-Matt likes to think he’s Neil’s best friend.
-Like sure, Neil’s close with Kevin and obviously Andrew doesn’t count... at least not really because they are... together? ish?
-In fact that was one of the main things that Matt wants to know. Because he and Neil are best friends, and best friends talk about their relationships right? God knows, Matt talks about Dan all the time and about the things they do together.
-But Neil just... doesn’t talk about Andrew.
At first, Matt thought it was because Neil wasn’t sure where he and Andrew stood. That things were new, fragile, maybe Neil didn’t want to get his hopes up?
-Eventually, Matt just accepted it... but slowly, things started to change.
-Like the time Matt picked Neil up from his new dormroom (he’s still a bit upset he lost Neil as a roommate but it was whatever) and Neil came out in a shockingly put together outfit.
He was wearing black jeans, with chunky black boots and a black tee-shirt, thrown over that was a blue flannel that made his auburn hair stand out even more.
Matt lets out a low whistle when he sees Neil, making Neil’s head jump up in surprise.
“What?”
“You look good dude! Since when did you know how to dress yourself?”
“Oh! Um, Andrew picked it out for me.” Neil does an awkward jimmy on his feet, as if showing off the outfit on instinct but then deciding against it.
Matt smiles at that, a sudden warmth flooding his chest as he sees the small colour growing in Neil’s cheek at the mention of Andrew.
Interesting.
-It starts becoming more common after that. Neil mentioning small things that Andrew may have gotten him if Matt asks - or the one time Matt tried to take Neil to the arcade for ‘his first time’ only to have Neil sheepishly tell him that he’s already been with Andrew.
- Or the time when Neil couldn’t hang out for ‘not date night with Andrew’ even though it was totally a date night with Andrew
- Or how sometimes Neil ducks down to kiss Andrew goodbye before running out the door to meet Matt
-Slowly Neil is opening up and whenever he does, he gets this distant, hazy that boardlines on dreamy, look, when he talks about Andrew. It’s honestly getting to the point that Matt might be a little in love with Andrew too.
05 Aaron Minyard
- Alright so we know that Aaron does not like Neil Josten.
- It probably has to do with a bit of jealousy and the fact that Andrew can grab so much of Neil’s attention effortlessly when Aaron has spent so long fighting for it.
- So I think their relationship takes a bit of time to develop, sort of a ‘forced proximity’ situation because they are still forced to be around each other.
- Maybe it isn’t until they are older and Aaron is going through med school and Andrew is in the pros and Aaron finally finds time to visit even if he plays it off like he ‘just happened to be in the city’. He goes and watches one of Andrew’s home games and finds himself jumping to his feet and yelling when Andrew saves a particular nasty goal.
- He manages to catch Andrew after the game, immediately noticing the dark circles underlining his eyes and gaunt look to his brother’s features.
- Aaron is worried, he’s seen what his brother looks like when he’s hit rock bottom. Is now more aware of the daily fight Andrew has with his own mental health.
- Andrew even lets the surprise show on his face when he sees Aaron
- Still, Andrew agrees to letting Aaron come over. Maybe he missed his brother a bit too.
- They catch up, and it doesn’t take Aaron a lot to recognize that Andrew is getting burnt out
- Andrew’s team and him don’t get along, and while Andrew is pretending to not care; Aaron can tell that it’s bothering him. He has no one here with him, and yeah, Aaron can relate to being burnt out but he has Katelyn with him in the very least.
- It isn’t until Andrew’s phone starts ringing that Aaron see’s a shift in his mood. It’s subtle but his face softens, his lips press together and he moves for the phone faster then Aaron thinks he’s seen his brother move for anything not driven out of anger.
- Aaron sees the contact photo, it’s Neil. It looks like a photo Neil took himself at an unflattering angle but Aaron can’t see it for long because Andrew is already getting up from the couch and bringing the phone to his ear.
- Aaron tries his hardest to not eavesdrop, but he can catch bits and pieces, something along the lines of “....brother is here.... okay... spoke to Bee... no.... yeah... soon... love you...”
- The last bit makes Aaron sit up right in surprise, but frankly he doesn’t know why. He knows what Neil and Andrew are, it’s infuriated him for countless years, but that doesn’t erase what they are to each other.
- When Andrew walks back into the room, face back to its neutral state but he’s obviously more relaxed then he was before. A quiet glimmer in his eye that wasn’t there before.
- So Aaron asks, “Neil?”
- Andrew shots him a look, but it falters quickly and he nods. Sitting back down, “Yeah, he’s trying to get some time off on his team right now.”
- “Is he... do you think you guys will get on the same team soon?” Aaron can’t help but ask.
- Andrew shrugs, “We’re trying. I’ll leave the league if they don’t figure their shit out soon.”
- Maybe it’s the exhaustion that makes Andrew more open than usual, or maybe it’s just age. Either way, Aaron finds himself... happy to be able to hear it.
- Maybe Josten isn’t bad. Even if logically he’s known that Neil couldn’t be. His brother wouldn’t pick someone ‘bad’ to build his life around - and maybe a part of Aaron always knew that they would end up here still. Maybe watching the stress leak out of Andrew at the idea of having Neil near him again, is just another reminder of what Neil really means to Andrew.
- Maybe Aaron grows to love Neil, for who is, one day.
07 Allison Reynolds
- We know Allison likes gossip. She’s always making bets and wanting to nose into someone else business.
- But I like to think, she... settles down, when it comes to Andrew and Neil’s relationship. If not just for Neil and her own friendship with him.
- I don’t think Neil would like to be poke and prodded about his relationship with Andrew because to him it is self explanatory.
- So Allison learns fairly quickly into Neil’s sophomore year not to pry too much. Not after Neil ignored her for an entire week after she tried to pry into how his summer with Andrew had been and she got a little too pushy with it.
- So now she tries to keep her boundaries, and her opinions, to herself.
- Her and Dan agree in the beginning, they aren’t sure about how they feel about Andrew, especially in regards to his relationship with Neil.
- Neil is more than some hookup, and deserves better. Allison has dealt with her fair share of shitty men, and Neil has already been through too much to have to through it.
- So she tries to place herself as an open book, tries to put herself in the position to help Neil is he were to need it.
- One day Neil does need it
- He’s visibly upset when Allison picks him up for their weekly shopping date and for the first time when Allison asks if he’s okay, Neil doesn’t say, “I’m fine.”
- Instead he frowns and says, “I’m pissed off.”
- He won’t say who he is pissed off at, but Allison can take a guess pretty quickly as she starts asking why he’s pissed off.
- “He keeps insisting that the Dragons are a better pro team then the actual Olympic Exy team. How does that even make sense Allison? The Olympic Exy team is made up of the best athletes!”
“And how did this come up?”
“I was watching some matches with Kevin and he thought it was just a wonderful idea to butt in and start an argument! And for what? Because he thinks he’s so funny? I so easily disproved him too and he is still disagreeing with me.”
“Wait, Neil,” Allison butts in, who couldn’t help but feel slightly concerned, “Are you actually upset?”
Neil scoffs and rolls his eyes, “No. But he’s on thin fucking ice. It’s the only time he ever talks about Exy even though he knows it drives me insane.
- Allison, while glad that Neil’s frustration isn’t from a serious argument or fight, can’t help but feel a little amused.
- It feels a little like a petty couple fight that she sees Dan and Matt have over what movie is better and which one they should watch on date night.
- Either way, she entertains Neil’s rambles, agreeing with him in that yes, Andrew clearly knows nothing about Exy.
- It isn’t until later that night, as she dropping Neil off that she spots Andrew waiting in the parking lot, back pressed up against the Maserati.
- “Oh that bastard.” Neil mutters, before he pushes open Allison’s car door, with his shopping bags in hand and begins stomping towards the black silhouette.
- Allison, while also jumping out of her car and starting to head back to the dorms, can’t help but slow her walk slightly to hear what Neil is going to say.
- “What do you want.”
- “Hello to you too.”
- “Are you done worshipping the Chicago Dragon’s for the day, or am I hiding the last tub of ice cream when I get upstairs.”
- “Calm down junkie,” Andrew’s voice is surprisingly light, “You were right, the Dragon’s do have a weak defence line-“
-“I told you they had poor offence! If anything their redeeming qualities come from their backliners carrying the whole goddamn team!”
- There is a soft scoff and Allison freezes in her footsteps as she watches Andrew reach out and tug Neil’s ear, before sliding a hand behind his head. They know she’s here
-“You are so easy to rile up.”
- “I hate when you do this,” Neil grumbles in response.
-“No. You like it when I talk about exy too much to hate it.”
- There’s a grumbled agreement and then Neil mumbles something else, and with Andrew’s nod, they are both leaning in. Allison, while curious, also appreciates her life and doesn’t want to push anymore boundaries, looks away and quickens her pace.
- That doesn’t stop her from picking up the last dredges of the conversation.
- “Allison had to listen to me complain all day about you, you know.“ Neil says, loud enough she’s sure she’s suppose to hear it.
-“Yeah well I have to listen to Renee complain about Allison not making a move yet all day too.”
That was definitely directed at her and Allison raises her middle finger proud before making a very quick beeline for Renee’s room.
09 Renee Walker
- Renee is Andrew’s best friend.
- So you KNOW she is one of the few foxes who sees the other side of Andreil.
- I like to imagine that Andrew has some place, other than therapy, to talk about his feelings to Neil.
- At first, when Andrew first started feeling something for Neil, Renee was there to listen to him ramble during their sparring sessions. About how annoying he was, how much he hates him, how much he wants him alone and in his bed.
- Renee is happy, for both of them, when she finds out about the status of their relationship.
- She enjoys being the ear for Andrew’s vents that he allows himself to open up too.
- Even after she graduates, whenever they phone to catch up she always asks about Neil, and Andrew always responds.
- It isn’t until they are both graduated that Andrew truly surprises her.
- “I need help with something,” Andrew says over the phone, while they plan her visit. “If you can come down a day early before Neil’s back in town.”
-Of course, Renee comes a day early.
-Andrew shows her the new apartment that he and Neil have purchased together, having finally secured a spot on a pro team together. It’s large, but not too large, it’s modern with a hint of traditional added in. There are already photos of the Foxes hung on the walls and a blinding orange throw blanket across the couch.
- But Andrew doesn’t let them linger, because he’s already dragging her out of the door before she has time to congratulate him. Still, she goes.
- He takes her to jewelry store and a soft smile breaks across her lips before Andrew even says a thing.
- “I need your opinion. Is this stupid?” Andrew asks, point blank.
- “No. Andrew, wanting something like this with Neil could never be stupid.”
- “It isn’t even about...” He cuts himself off, “It’ll make things easier in some regards and... and maybe I just want it too, Neil told me it was my choice.”
- “So you guys talked about it?”
- Andrew flexed his fingers over the steering wheel, and then he nodded. “He said that we didn’t need this, that we didn’t need to prove anything and I agree but.... I want to give him something physical as a reminder.”
- Andrew looks like he wants to say more, but he doesn’t and Renee thinks that’s okay too. Sometimes some things are too personal, and she understands that better than anyone.
- Andrew ends up picking up two gold bands with one word engraved on the inside - stay - she doesn’t ask for the significance but she can guess.
- Andrew doesn’t propose while Renee is in town, but he definitely doesn’t waste time because once Renee is touching down back home. Allison is already shoving her phone into Renee’s face.
- Blinking, Renee stares at the photo of Andrew and Neil at the courthouse with the golden rings around both of their fingers being shown off. In the photo, Neil’s smile is unbreakable and Andrew just rests his chin on Neil’s shoulder with a lazy glean to his eyes. It’s quiet, soft, and completely them.
- The text accompanying the photo that comes in shortly after simply says, “He picked gold cause he knows I wouldn’t settled for silver.”
- Yeah, Renee always knew that they would work out.

Fic self-rec meme!
Wooo @alwaysthrowsscissors knows I like to talk about myself and tagged me, here we go!!
Rules: recommend 3 of YOUR fics: 1 that is “most popular” and 2 that are “hidden gems.” Then tag some folks.
Just because of Who We Are, I’m going to sort specifically to my Supernatural fics.
Most popular: Coin Slot, E, 3k, Wincest, SQUICK WARNING 🚽
Summary:
“How much to use it?”
Dean hears Sam shrug like he hadn’t even thought about it. “Quarter?”
(Dean is a very nice toilet and Sam is willing to share for a while.)
Thoughts:
I like my most kudos’ fic, but it’s not actually one that I’m overly attached to, I don’t reread it that much. But this one has been holding it down for most hits almost since I posted it which like... It makes me laugh how paranoid and apologetic I used to be about posting kinky shit (pun intended) and then here we have a whole ass human toilet that other people clearly revisit as well lmao
Hidden Gem #1: Marching Home, M, 3k, Kevin-centric
Summary:
Apparently, the Winchesters haven’t left the county since Kevin grabbed an unexpectedly active magical item and got zapped right out of the museum. They’ve been looking for a way to get him back, Sam damn near distraught the entire time, though they insist Kevin was only gone for two days at most.
It was not just two days.
(Kevin grabbed a magical artifact that threw him back in time. His homecoming is rough.)
Thoughts:
I actually love this fic so much considering I just did it as a part of a bingo board. I don’t know, I think I was just having UA feels, but I love Kevin a lot and you know, writers’ favorite characters, dogs’ favorite chew toys, yadda yadda. I don’t know, I just really liked how it came out, it’s a different kind of raw than I usually do and I feel like I did a good job!
Hidden Gem #2: Wunjo, E, 4k, Wincest
Summary:
There’s the barest hint of sun-bleached blonde streaking through Sam’s hair from being outside all summer, flyaways starting to escape from the little tail he’s got it pulled back into. The dork is in full costume—a well-made tunic and breeches, a leather pouch hanging off his belt, and the handmade boots that Dean sent him two hundred bucks to get last Christmas, but that’s part of the appeal.
Sam looks good. It seems like he’s gotten even bigger since Dean last saw him, well-fed and filling out his clothes better than he did as a teen. And he’s happy. Dean can tell that even only judging from half his face, off center and turned down to consider his fortune.
The seer had been pointing at one of the tiles on the table, but she looks up to meet Dean’s eyes, smiling as she lets her finger drift up to follow her gaze.
(Dean and Sam get reaquainted at a summer ren fest.)
Thoughts:
I’ve been in a fairground mood all year and this one feeds into like. Idk a lot of the vibes that feel really familiar to me crossed over with the things I find hot? Like achy nostalgia, and distance, and summer heat, and shared spaces with familiar strangers, and stolen moments away from crowds, and yeah, I also just really like semi-public sex lol. All to say - I just like this one!
If you read through this, A. Thanks! B. I’m tagging you!!
Also @silver9mm @digitalmeowmix @mannequin3thereckoning? If you’d like!

CW: angst, meeting the family, references to the n-word, people sucking
I decided to go ahead and finish it when I got a sudden burst of creativity when I came home.
*
Nina snuggled in bed, a happy little sigh leaving her lips. Sidney looked at her, a fond smile on his face. It had been a month since they were back together and life was almost perfect. Well, they were 6-3-2, 14 points earned which was okay but not where Sidney wanted the team to be. It was still early in the season, it was mid-November so there was plenty of time to right the ship. He and the boys would fix it. Sidney sighed before attempting to try to go back to sleep. However, he heard the sound of a door opening and he sat up, pushing the covers down inadvertently.
Sidney racked his brain. It was Sunday, Marta, his housekeeper’s day off. Mario or Nathalie would have called before coming over. He had no idea who the hell it could be. “Fuck,” Sidney breathed. There were only two people who would do a surprise visit and one of them was a week earlier for the Moms trip.
Lightly brushing his fingers over Nina’s side, Sidney urged, “Pretty girl, wake up.”
It was roughly 8am so it wasn’t hard to get Nina, an early riser by nature to wake up. “Urgh, mawning,” Nina mumbled as she cracked open her eyes. Sidney looked anxious and agitated which made Nina focus.
Sidney opened his mouth, then closed it. If he was right, he was fucked and his pretty girl was probably going to run away screaming. He finally said, “Um, someone just opened the door and there are exactly five people other than me who have a key. There are two who’d do a surprise visit.”
Looking down, Nina was thankful that she had on one of Sidney’s shirts and shorts while sleeping. “Well, fuck, at least I’m not naked,” she said pointedly. Sidney had the grace to blush as Nina continued, “If it’s what you think it is, you need to get that under control,” pointing at his rather obvious morning wood. Sidney pulled the covers back over himself and Nina
Then a voice called out, “Morming, Sid!”
Sidney sighed in relief. It was Taylor, not his mom. Nina noticed it and arched an eyebrow. “Eh, it’s my sister, pretty girl.”
“Shit,” Nina fretted. This was going to be awkward, she didn’t even know if she wanted to meet his family but now, she was going to,have to. At least it was a sister.
The door creaked open and a blonde-haired head peeked in. “Boo,” Taylor said. Then her eyes perked when she saw who Sidney was with.
Nina groaned. Her hair was in a scarf, it was obvious she slept over and fuck, fuck, fuck. A devious smile spread on Taylor’s face. “Nice to see that you finally let a girlfriend sleep in your room, Sidney.”
“Shut the fuck up, Taylor,” Sidney yelled as his little sister giggled before closing the door.
Nina facepalmed. “That was fun. Fun fun fun.”
Rolling onto her front, Nina mumbled, “I’m not ready to meet your family.”
“I’ve already met yours,” Sidney reasoned.
“That was because Yanni was part of your Lil Penguins program. That was work related for you, doesn’t count.”
Trailing his fingers down Nina’s back, Sidney replied, “True but, it still counts. What are you doing next weekend?”
“I’m going to be in Philly for a wedding.”
Nina turned onto her left side, facing Sidney. Sidney sucked his bottom lip into his mouth before letting it go. “Don’t get any ideas.”
She slipped off the bed, pulling the scarf off her braids, letting them fall down her back. Rummaging through her clothes on the floor, Nina pulled out her bra. Pulling her shirt off, she put it on to the sound of Sidney’s groans. Nina rolled her eyes. “I’m stuck having to meet your sister because she decided to give you a surprise visit. I’m not meeting her without wearing a bra.”
“But you look so amazing without one,” Sidney replied.
Nina shook her head before leaving his bedroom. Making her way to the kitchen, Nina literally bumped into Taylor. “Oh my god, I’m so sorry,” Nina gasped.
“I’m okay,” Taylor reassured Nina, taking the moment to check out this girl that Sidney was now seeing. She wasn’t exactly what Taylor was expecting but one thing that Taylor liked about Nina was that she had kind eyes. Taylor had heard about her over the years, especially that Nina had kept rejecting Sidney. Her brother rarely heard the word no so that made Nina intriguing to her.
Taylor offered, “Have you had breakfast yet?”
“No, and I’m hungry.”
Opening the fridge, Taylor took out the ingredients to make omelets. Nina sat at the island, a pensive look on her face. “You know, I totally didn’t expect to meet you this way. This is awkward as fuck.”
“Eh, don’t feel bad, I should have given Sid a heads up,” Taylor replied. “Plus, I’ve heard about you over the years.”
“Oh really?”
Taylor laughed as she cracked eggs. “Sidney couldn’t shut up about you. First it was he met this nice girl at work. Then, it was that you kept telling him no and he was confused. Later, he was beating himself up because he managed to fuck up before he could even ask you out. I really enjoyed that, I liked that you kept not only telling him no but when he pissed you off, you didn’t forgive him right away. I love my brother but his ego needs to get cut down sometimes.”
“True, he has a huge ego. He needs to take himself less seriously,” Nina concurred. “But it’s probably impossible to get him to do that.”
Taylor shrugged, pursing her lips. “At least he means well,” Nina added.
Nodding, Taylor replied, “He does mean well, most of the time.”
“Already ganging up on me?”
They both laughed as Sidney entered the kitchen. “Why are you here, Taylor?”
“I went on a camping trip and I decided to be nosy and visit my big brother before heading home,” Taylor chirped. “The look on your face was worth it.”
“Hahaha. Should’ve called,” Sidney grumbled.
Taylor quipped, “Oh, did I ruin your morning sex plans? I’m so sorry.”
Nina snorted as she laughed. Sidney gave her hurt eyes and Nina blew him a kiss.
“Don’t worry Sid, I’m not staying long. Just enough to rest and then get back on the road,” Taylor said.
“You drove,” Nina asked. Sidney was now standing right behind her and she could feel his hands massaging her shoulders.
Taylor nodded as she flipped the first omelet. “You’re not what I expected, Nina. You’re way too pretty for a hockey player like my brother.”
Sidney wanted to kill his little sister as she continued to chirp him. Well, not only chirp him but ruin his planned lazy morning sex. But as he watched his sister and Nina interact playfully, Sidney could admit there was a slight good point. Taylor and Nina were hitting it off and Sidney knew that Nina would meet his family soon. This was a good sign.

However, after practice four days later, Sidney was wishing his sister had never stopped by. Nina had been incredibly busy all week and Sidney knew he wouldn’t see her until next week due to her trip out of town. He was feeling extra irritable and hearing his name over the tv didn’t help.
“So, two weeks ago, Sidney Crosby admitted that he was having relationship issues that were affecting him on the ice.”
Tanger went to change the channel on the tv in the lounge, muttering, “Fucking ESPN.”
“Shh, keep it on,” Sidney urged, crossing his arms over his chest. He wanted to see what kind of bullshit ESPN was saying now.
A couple of the guys stopped to check out the TV. Kevin Neghandi laughed as he responded, “Yeah, he admitted that after breaking a slump. Ever since, he’s been on a 2 point-per-game streak. But this really isn’t about him.”
“Huh,” said Geno, scratching his head.
Buccigross continued, “There was a picture of Crosby and his girlfriend posted on the internet, a nice picture. Someone posted it and made a derogatory statement about his girlfriend, Nina Jackson. This player is a player for Clemson.”
Neghandi laughed again. “Ms. Jackson has a younger brother named Jason Jackson. He was also the number 20 prospect, number 1, 5 star tight end. He also now plays for UNC.”
Sidney chuckled as he realized exactly where this was going. The guy on the tv continued, “Clemson and UNC had the rare Thursday night game last night. #1 Clemson went to the Tar Heels, ranked #22 and got spanked, 56-30. Jason Jackson had 10 catches, 200 yards receiving, and 3 TDs. His response in the postgame.”
The tv showed a clip of Jason talking to the media. A reporter asked, “What inspired you to have such a big game tonight.”
“Lowell decided he needed to talk about my sister on the gram so I had to put him in his place,” Jason drawled.
Sidney’s phone buzzed and it was a message from Nina. my brother is so dramatic 🙄
Nice to know he’ll always have your back, Sidney sent Nina.
**
Nina smiled happily as she looked at the Thai food on plate. She was so hungry and excited to see Jamila face to face in person for lunch. Her friend looked more vibrant than usual, as life was treating her good. They made small talk until Jamila said, “I heard something about you, that you aren’t single for the first time in forever.”
“Oh really?”
Jamila looked at her best friend. “You’re dating Mayo boy.”
“What?!?” Perplexed, Nina stared at Jamila while Jamila rolled her eyes.
“Sidney Crosby is like Mayo. Super white. Damn, my dating habits really did rub off on you. Welcome to being a basic bitch like me.”
It was Nina’s turn to roll her eyes. “Stop being so fucking dramatic, Jamila Brown.”
“I was an actress, I’m supposed to be dramatic. Tell Mayo boy if he ever breaks your heart, I’ll kill and cremate whatever’s left of him after your father and brother are finished with him.”
“Are you really gonna nickname him that?”
Jamila smirked at Nina and Nina sighed. Shrugging elegantly, Jamila replied, “I’m a part of Philly sports Twitter. I got lots of other names I could call him.
“Be a bigger bitch, Mila.”
“He gets a better nickname when he lets you fully run his pockets. And don’t give me that look, don’t be afraid of being called a gold digger. They are probably calling you worse names. Make Mayo boy run that card up when he takes you on baecation. Once that happens, I’ll upgrade his nickname.”
Nina sighed as she looked at the menu. Jamila reached out and put her hand out, covering Nina’s menu. “You know I’m just playing, right?”
“I don’t want to talk about it now, let’s talk about Toyin’s wedding instead,” Nina murmured.
It was Jamila’s turn to sigh. “I’m sorry, Nina. I’m sorry for being a bitch. I shouldn’t be taking out my bad mood on you. I hate men.”
“Not forgiven yet,” Nina snarked.
Jamila looked pensive as she said, “I like this guy but I don’t want to admit I like him. He’s like too perfect, too nice, well not that nice. He actually gives a fuck.”
“Let me guess, you’re scared and about to do something super stupid,” Nina dryly replied.
Jamila gave Nina a shocked look before she slumped in her chair. “I don’t want to,” she pouted.
Nina reasoned, “Then don’t. Just ride it out for once.”
“Easy for you to say,” Jamila replied.
Nina shrugged as her phone buzzed. It was a message from Sid, well really just a picture of him sweaty post-practice. Nina left him on read, she would get him back later for that. “Stop being stupid, and stop self-sabotaging.”
Jamila rolled her eyes as she ate her food. After swallowing, she arched an eyebrow. “Mayo boy sent you a message?”
“Yeah, but I’m focusing on you. I’ll see him next week… and his parents.”
“This is going fast,” Jamila commented.
Nina bit her lip before saying, “I guess he had to wait eighty-four years, I mean five years, so he’s going to take advantage while they are in town.”
“Interesting.”
Nina pointed out, “At least I’m giving my relationships a chance, unlike you.”
“Fuck you.”
Jamila gave Nina an exaggerated nasty look as Nina quipped, “I’m strictly dickly, bitch.”
The conversation switched to safer topics. However, throughout the wedding weekend, Nina had the thought in the back of her mind that maybe things were going a bit too fast.
**
“Well, Taylor says she likes her. I checked out her instagram account and she doesn’t even mention you. Lots of nice vacation pictures though.”
Sidney looked at his mom from across the table. Trina had a pensive look on her face. Troy raised his eyebrows before leaning back in his chair.
Sidney reasoned, “I want you two to meet her. Give her a chance. Nina is amazing, I’m lucky that she even likes me.”
“Why wouldn’t she like you, you’re Sidney Crosby,” Trina scoffed.
Sidney shrugged. “Nina’s a PhD student and everything. It hasn’t been easy for her either.”
“Interesting,” Trina said.
Nina herself was feeling extra nervous. She wasn’t sure if she was ready to meet Sidney’s parents, especially after having to turn in a huge paper and part of her thesis to her advisor. But, as she shook her head and smoothed down her shirt, they were in town and she was going to try to make her best impression.
Midway through dinner, Nina began to wish she was somewhere else on this Friday night. While Troy, Sidney’s dad, seemed nice, it felt like Trina was judging every single thing she did. Every reply Trina made to Nina’s questions was in a dry voice, as if it was boring her. Nina felt a bit discouraged. Sidney obviously loved his parents but it felt like his mother didn’t like her.
On the other hand, Trina felt like Nina was looking down on them. It seemed like she was mentioning her PhD program, her thesis, like she was too smart for them and her boy. Trina sipped her water as there was a pause. She didn’t know about this girl but at least, every time she looked at Sidney, Trina could see the stars and hearts in her eyes.
Nina looked at Sidney, her palms sweating. She didn’t know what to say as she looked down at her plate. Her appetite was gone. Sidney, himself, didn’t really notice anything as he answered his father’s questions about the beginning of the season. Then Troy turned to Nina.
“So what do you plan to do now that you’re with Sidney,” Troy casually asked.
Nina replied, “I have about two more years left before I finish earning my PhD. I plan to continue to work and I may teach a class or two.”
“You still plan to work,” Trina asked.
Nina nodded. “Yes. I love what I do and I’m not wasting my degrees.”
“Why do you want to work?”
Nina could tell that Trina intended that question to be light but Nina could still feel the claws. She was tired of this passive-aggressive bullshit and ready to curse her out. But Nina couldn’t so she measured her words carefully. “I did four years of undergrad, three years of school for my doctors in physical therapy, and I will do four more years for my doctorate. Why would I stop working after earning my degrees?”
Trina paused; she had expected some trite, suck-up answer. But it seemed like Nina was serious. “I would think that if you were with my son, you’d rather not work.”
“I’m not built to be a housewife.” Nina laughed. “I love what I do and if I’m expected to stop for Sidney, then maybe I need to reevaluate some things.”
Trina felt like she lost control of this conversation. All she wanted was to see what kind of user her boy’s dream girl was. Now, she had the feeling that her son was going to get dumped and it was going to be her fault.
Sidney laughed. “I don’t expect you to be a housewife. You would be so bored if you were.”
Nina flashed Sidney a quick grin before adding, “Nathalie has let me know the responsibilities though. I’ve done lots of volunteer and charity work over the years so that isn’t new at all. I’m excited about the toy drive, I remember when my parents just got out of the army and cash was tight. I got my favorite doll as a kid from a toy drive.”
“That’s nice,” Trina said. Maybe this Nina girl wasn’t completely stuck up, she thought as the night continued. After a couple of hours, Nina said her goodbyes. It was getting late and she was spending the morning taking her little sister to volleyball practice. After she left, Trina let out a sigh as Sidney turned to her.
“You have to lay off on Nina, Mom.”
Trina turned to look at her son. Sidney was giving her his most serious look and she sighed.
“I like her but I don’t know if she’s the one for you, Sid. It seems like she’s one step from leaving you,” Trina said. “I don’t see her sticking with you if things go bad.”
“Just because she plans to work?”
Sidney gave his mother an assessing look. He knew she meant well but this wasn’t for her to decide. “This isn’t your problem.”
“Fine, I like that she has her own life. She’s not obsessed with you and she plans to be her own person,” Trina conceded. “But she’s different.”
He knew this was going to be hard, asking his mom to back off but Sidney knew he had to do it. Nina hadn’t said anything last night but Sidney could sense that she was tired of how his mother was acting. Sidney also knew that if Nina decided to cut ties, it would be completely over. Sidney started, “Compared to Nina, I’m a dumb hockey player. But what I have with her, I’ve never found with anyone else. If you have a problem with that, that’s you. But be civil to Nina.”
“Really, Sidney Patrick Crosby,” Trina said, incredulous. But the look on her son’s face was something she had never seen before. Even though she didn’t believe her son would really pick any woman over her, a voice at the back of her mind told her that if Sidney ever did, this would be the woman he’d pick over her.
**
It was Saturday night and Nina pasted another smile on her face. If Trina got snide again, Nina didn’t know if she could be nice about it. But at least they were in public. As they sat down for dinner, a couple of guys came up. Sidney and his family had perfect PR smiles but the guys stopped in front of Nina.
“Hey, aren’t you Jason Jackson’s sister?”
Nina grinned. “Yes.”
“Why did he have to have such a great game against Pitt today? He killed them,” one of the guys said.
Nina shrugged. “Pitt should play better defense.”
After the guys left, Troy asked, “your brother plays college football?”
“Yup. He was the top prospect in Pennsylvania last season. Games on tv and everything.”
“I didn’t know that,” Sidney murmured.
Nina giggled as she replied, “All you do is eat, sleep, and breathe hockey.”
Sidney blushed as everyone laughed at that statement. However, through the night, more people came by the table to give Nina props for her brother’s monster game than to try to get a glimpse of Sidney. Jason had 184 yards receiving and 2 TDs for UNC today and there was already buzz about Jason being on the fast track to the NFL. During a lull, Trina stated, “You must get asked about your brother a lot.”
“I’m used to it. Once ESPN comes to your brother’s games when he was a sophomore in high school, you have to get used to it,” Nina said with a shrug. “I’m old enough that it really doesn’t bother me.”
“How does your brother deal with it,” Sidney asked, curious as he remembered some of his early experiences with fame.
Nina replied, “College football is a different beast than the pros. So, he’s on scholarship and his days are pretty much regimented with meetings, practice, classes, more meetings, video study. I ran track when I was in undergrad so my experience was slightly similar. Main difference is that Jase gets paid for his likeness in video games now and a percentage of any jersey sales with his name and number.”
“You ran track,” Troy asked. Unlike his wife, he felt a bit more open towards Nina. It was obvious that she didn’t need Sidney for anything and Troy could see that his son was able to relax in a way with Nina that he hadn’t been able to relax with a woman before.
“I had a partial scholarship. I ran the 4x100 relay and the 100 meters. I didn’t have the athletic ability to race for a living but I did decent,” Nina stated, feeling a bit shy. It had been a long time since she even talked about her track career. “I was state champ my senior year and my team won silver at the Penn Relays my sophomore and junior years of college. Now, I just run to stay in shape.”
“Wow,” Sidney said, impressed. “Sounds like you loved it though.”
Nina flashed Sidney a grin. “I did, I love running. What most people forget is that you can’t just run for health, you have to run and do strength training and yoga or Pilates.”
“Have you been to any of your brother’s games,” Troy asked. “Seems like they are doing well.”
Nina replied, “We went to the season opener. I will never go to North Carolina in August ever again if I can help it. I’m going to their game next weekend at Virginia Tech. We’ll probably go to the bowl game since my little sister will be off school that week.”
“Seems like you stay busy,” Trina mused.
Nina couldn’t help a little glare as she managed to say without malice, “I plan my calendar in advance.”
Trina said, “That sounds good. You have a life outside of everything.”
“And I will continue to have a life outside of everything,” Nina said with a syrup-sweet smile.
**
Nina quietly washed her hands, glancing up to the mirror. Trina was looking down on her hands as she washed hers. Tentatively, Nina asked, “Are you having a good time on this trip?”
“I enjoyed the Moms’ trip,” Trina replied.
Nina looked down at her hands as she dried them. This was so awkward and she wanted to cry.
“Sidney Crosby is here, and so are his parents,” somebody exclaimed just outside the ladies bathroom. Trina and Nina both shared a look until another person said, “And his n-word girlfriend is here with them too.”
Nina opened her mouth but Trina put up a finger. The second person continued, “His mom doesn't look too happy with that black girl. Maybe you could get a chance, finally.”
The door opener and the two women came in, laughing. The laughter stopped when those women saw Nina and Trina.
“You don’t have to worry about getting a chance with my son because there’s no way I’d let him be with someone like you when he’s with a lady like Nina,” Trina stated.
The two women shared a look but Trina stared them down until they left. Nina let out a breath she didn’t know she was holding. “No wonder my son is always saying that it hasn’t been easy for you,” Trina offered. “Don’t worry, I’ll make sure they get kicked out.”
Nina sniffled as she said, “That’s the first time I’ve heard it in person. It’s usually nasty messages online. I really, really hate it. But I guess I’m going to be stuck with this for the rest of my life.”
Impulsively, Trina reached out and grabbed Nina’s hand. “From the way that my son looks at you, nasty women like those will just have to be angry forever.”
Nina giggled as they shared a look. It felt like there was a truce and she was going to take it. After Trina talked to the manager and got those women booted, Nina definitely felt like there was definitely a truce.
**
“Don’t take anything seriously. If they don’t like you, they’ll say absolutely nothing to you. If they make jokes, they like you.”
Two weeks after meeting Sid’s family, it was his turn to meet Nina’s family. The team was home for American Thanksgiving and they didn’t have a game until Friday evening this year. So Sidney was going with Nina to meet her extended family. He was feeling extra nervous and desperate to make a good impression.
Sidney grimaced as Nina giggled. “Plus, it’s Aryanna’s birthday so they won’t be too mean. I think.”
“Anything else I need to worry about,” Sidney asked.
Nina reached out over the console and touched Sidney’s hand. “Relax, it’s not a game. You can’t lose.”
“But, I want them-”
Cutting Sidney off, Nina said, “I know, you want them to like you. So be the dork that you are instead of faking like you aren’t a dork.”
Sidney felt a bit insulted but Nina gave him a dazzling smile. “I like it when you’re being dorky, anyway.”
**
Sidney tried hard to follow Nina’s advice. There were so many people that he couldn’t keep them all straight so he focused on making sure he remembered the names of the older people in Nina’s family. There was Mawmaw, the family matriarch, Tracey and Vernon, Nina’s parents, Aunt Tasha who baked the sweet potato pie that he was having his third slice of, Aunt Dee, Uncle Tony, and Uncle Bashir. All of the cousins kinda blurred together but Sidney figured he’d learn their names quickly.
Overall, he felt like everything was going well. Sidney answered everyone’s questions and he guessed his answers were good since one of Nina’s older cousins told him his new nickname was White Boy. Nina had snickered while some of the younger ones giggled. Right now, Sidney was talking to Aunt Tasha. “What would it take to get you to bake me a pie of my own,” Sidney asked.
Tasha laughed while Tracey smirked. Tracey interjected, “Oh no, Tasha gonna be bragging about this forever. ‘Guess who came to Thanksgiving and loved my sweet potato pie? Sidney Crosby loved my sweet potato pie.’ She will never shut up!”
“Don’t be mad that you can’t bake a pie as good as me, Tracey,” Tasha chided, laughing. “Nina makes a better pie than both of us but that girl don’t wanna cook.”
Tracey smirked when she saw the look on Sidney’s face. “Oh no, Tash, now this boy gonna be begging my daughter to make him a pie.”
Everyone laughed as Nina was in a different room. Mawmaw chided, “I’m happy that one of my family don’t got to be in the kitchen like that. I wish I could’ve been the same at her age.”
Sidney decided to scroll his phone as the older women began to argue. Then he felt someone tap his shoulder.
“White boy, you wanna play spades?”
Sidney looked at this cousin of Nina. He was sitting at a table with Vernon, one of her aunts, and another cousin. “No,” he replied, shaking his head.
The cousin got a devious grin on his face. “It’s easy, you should play for Shantara, she can’t play for shit.”
Sidney’s competitive instinct told him it was a bad idea. And from the way Vernon was eyeing him, Sidney knew he was right for shaking his head. “Nope. I’ll learn by watching.”
“Nina’s white boy smart,” Aunt Tasha hollered. “You play spades and renege, boy, someone about to go for those knees.”
“Stop torturing, Sid, Deonte,” Nina scolded as she sat in Sidney’s lap. “At least wait til the second visit before hazing him over spades.”
“I like this boy, Nini. Keep him, he’s betta than that last boy you brought here, bless his heart. Didn’t know how to talk to people,” Mawmaw advised.
Nina wanted to die as the rest of her family snickered. Holidays: the time of the year where your greatest fuckups get rehashed for shits and giggles.
Nafis snorted. “What’s his name... it wasn’t that Ron boy, was it? Naw, it was James’s old friend, Jordan. We all knew he wasn’t shit, I mean, nothing, when he made Tommy mad.”
Nina winced as remembered that. Tommy was one of the sweetest guys and hard to rile up, but anyone who could make cousin Tommy mad was a douchebag.
“Her pets like him. Tess curls in his lap and Steely lets him pet him,” Vernon said.
Everyone stared at Sidney, eyes wide. Stuttering, Aunt Tasha said, “T-t-that cat and d-dog hate every damn body other than Nini and her family. I be damned.”
Mawmaw laughed.
The rest of the dinner went without incident. But at a quiet moment, Vernon pulled Sidney from the group to a quiet spot in the yard. It was late November in Western Pennsylvania so no one else was there.
Vernon Jackson had seen more of his fair share of crap in his life. Growing up in Ward 8 of D.C., Vernon had dodged dealers, hustlers, stick-up kids, etc. to survive. His grades weren’t great so Vernon went into the army to ensure that he escaped. Through being deployed in the Gulf War then to Mogadishu, Vernon had done his best to make sure that all his children had more than he did growing up.
Now, his sweettart, his eldest, his sweet girl, Nina was grown. She had done more than he and Tracey combined. But looking at the man he was sure his daughter was in love with, Vernon began to wonder if he made a mistake.
Oh, it was obvious that Sidney Crosby was in love with his daughter. But the feelings of love could fade and given his history, Vernon couldn’t trust that Crosby would do the right thing.
So as a loving father, Vernon pulled Sidney to the side. “I just wanted to ask you something important before I give my blessing to this.”
“Yes, sir,” Sidney responded.
“You know your children will be considered Black?”
Vernon watched Sidney’s face after asking that question. Lust and infatuation was nice but this was his little girl. The last thing he wanted was his daughter hurt because she fell for someone not just clueless but maliciously clueless about race.
Sidney quietly replied, “I know. People will see them as Black and will think the worst of them first.”
Not bad, Vernon thought. He expected a colorblind response.
Then he heard Nina call out, “Dad? Sid? We are about to cut the cake!”
Vernon and Sid both grimaced but for different reasons. Vernon because he couldn’t really have cake because of his diabetes, Sid because cake wasn’t on his meal plan. Vernon told Sidney, “before you start making plans for rings, you need to start thinking about how you are going to start speaking up about race. Think about that.”
**
Sidney kept Vernon’s words in his mind through the week. Trina had told him what happened in the bathroom that night but Nina told him that his mom had handled it for her. But as he waited for Nina to open her door, Sidney couldn’t help but think what he could do to avoid situations like that from happening for Nina. But words failed as Nina opened the door and gave him a shy smile.
“Hi pretty girl,” Sidney drawled as he walked in, closing the door. He hung up his coat on her coat rack before sitting on Nina’s couch.
“I missed you daddy”
“Missed you, pretty girl. Did you have fun?”
Nina straddled Sid’s thigh and replied, “it was a good time even though UNC lost. The VT campus is beautiful. How was the road trip?”
Sid laughed as Nina played with his hair. “It went well but Geno got hurt. He’ll be out for two weeks.”
“That sucks.”
Sidney hummed his assent as he wrapped an arm around Nina’s waist. He missed his pretty girl and it seemed like she missed him too. They sat there together for several quiet moments before Nina whispered, “I really missed you, daddy. It’s been too long.”
Sidney gave Nina a slow smile as she began to grind on his thigh. He felt the same way as he kissed Nina, soft and slow. Then as they broke apart, the sensual haze on Nina’s face turned into horror. “God damn it,” she muttered.
Sidney frantically asked, “What’s wrong, baby?”
“I just felt my period show up, three days early,” Nina said, rubbing her temples. Her period was cock-blocking her after a couple weeks of no dick and she wanted to die. “I just felt cramps and as much as I’d like to slide to my knees and suck you off, it won’t happen tonight.”
Nina groaned as she closed her eyes, head down. Sidney just started to laugh.
“Cmon, pretty girl. Let’s just watch movies tonight.”
“Movies sound good,” Nina replied, “I just refuse to watch Friends, ever.”
Sidney giggle-honked as Nina moved from straddling his thigh to curling into his lap.
