OH MY GOD CONGRATS ON THE ADOPTION FAM!!!! 💙✨💙✨💙 ✨ 💙
Ahhhhhhhhhhh thank you so much! I never know the proper amount to talk about him without being boring or doxxing myself/my toddler. But yeah, he's here to stay and he's getting so big! We've had a fantastic interfaith "Honka" season as he calls it, and has been responsible about not trying to blow out the candles even though he very much suspects the menorah is cousins with a birthday cake. (Taxonomic proof: many candles)
Every day is different, and every day he makes me laugh hard about something even in the midst of world events being terrible. He's my entire world.

Rise in parents engaging in sex-selection during IVF has the fertility biz booming
By Cassy Fiano-Chesser | May 14, 2024
The fertility industry has opened new doors for countless would-be parents across the globe, and it’s not just doors allowing them to have children. Thanks to in-vitro fertilization (IVF), people can create their children and then have them tested to ensure they meet all the right specifications. While this brave new world sounds like something out of a science fiction novel, it’s all too real – and using IVF to select the kind of child you want is becoming more and more common.
In 2021, socialite and reality television alum Paris Hilton announced her plans to use IVF to create her family, and choosing the sex of her babies was one of the reasons. “Well, we have been doing the IVF. So I can pick twins if I like. Kim [Kardashian] is actually the one who told me about that, I didn’t even know anything about it. And I’m happy she told me that advice, and introduced me to her doctor, so yeah. We have them all ready to go,” she said, continuing, “I think it’s just something most women should do, just to have. And then you can pick if you want boys or girls — just because I really want to have twins that are a boy and a girl. The only way to 100% get that is by making it happen that way.”
Hilton is hardly alone. The number of people foregoing sex in favor of IVF in order to have children is growing — as is sex selection. Though, according to the Daily Mail, sex selection is illegal in most of the globe, it isn’t in the United States, and it’s become trendy.
“The market is the size of the human race,” Jeffrey Steinberg, founder of the Fertility Institutes in Los Angeles, said in an interview with Slate. He claimed 85% of his clients are drawn in by the idea of choosing their baby’s sex.
Sex selection has long been practiced, albeit not using IVF; instead, parents sometimes found out the sex of their baby during an ultrasound, and if it was the “wrong” sex, they sought an abortion. Though this has typically been a way to bolster a cultural preference for boys, Slate pointed out that in the United States, it’s become the opposite: the market is skewed toward girls.
Sharon Moayeri, the founder of OC Fertility in Newport Beach, California, does not market the ability to choose the baby’s sex as aggressively as Steinberg does, and therefore, said only around 15% of her clients arrive without fertility issues. Another doctor at the medical center at the University of California San Francisco told Slate that “single mothers by choice, same-sex couples, and families with a history of autism” were typically more likely to request girls. A study also found that white parents having their first child chose female embryos 70% of the time.
"When I think about having a child that’s a boy, it’s almost a repulsion, like, Oh my God, no,” one woman said.
Another argued, “Boy children tend to be less caring towards their parents. It doesn’t really matter if it’s socialized or biological. It’s probably socialized, but I can’t change all of society.”
And because laws in other countries ban sex selection, thousands of people fly to the United States each year just to take advantage of this country’s lax fertility regulations. And it means big business for the fertility industry.
“It’s a moneymaking industry,” Laura Kerwin, a Harvard-trained psychologist, told Slate. “People need to realize that [clinics] have a fiduciary duty to their shareholders to make money. They’re trying to sell you on an option.”
There is little to no oversight within the fertility industry, meaning there is little to no information on what the current state of the industry is. “We do not even know how many frozen embryos we have in this country,” Margaret Marsh, a professor at Rutgers University, told the Atlantic, explaining that the last count — 400,000 — was 20 years ago. “[Today] we have no idea.”
The Atlantic also noted that 75% of fertility clinics advertise sex-selection as an offered service, allowing people to undergo IVF simply because they want to choose if they have a boy or a girl. Steinberg told the Atlantic this “service” makes the fertility industry approximately $90 million each year.
Steinberg also scoffed at the notion of increased regulations, saying it is “putting the handcuffs on scientists.” Then, using pro-abortion terminology, he added, “If there’s anything society should have learned, it’s ‘Keep their hands off of people’s reproductive choices’.”
IVF, though often described as a way to help heartbroken infertile couples to create families, has created a monster in which children are no longer treated as human beings, but as products to be designed, engineered, and then sold to the highest bidder upon demand. And as these embryonic children are products, they can be screened, destroyed, traded, and even turned into jewelry.
Any attempts to cut back on this commodification is swiftly attacked as cruelty towards the infertile — but what about the children being created? What will it take for the line to be drawn and a stop be placed on this reproductive free-for-all?
I checked on that statement about embryos turned into jewelry and found articles mostly dating back to 2018. But it did happen.

"When I think about having a child that’s a boy, it’s almost a repulsion, like, Oh my God, no,” one woman said. While I get that I'm still creeped out about this being a big international business.
#Anti surrogacy#Anti using IVF for sex selection#Babies are not commodities#Anti custom made babies#Interesting how many articles about Paris Hiltons surrogacy focused on her earlier abuse not about her desire to control what she had#sex selection is illegal in most of the globe but not USA#Fertility Institutes in Los Angeles#OC Fertility in Newport Beach#Do they families choosing girls really want daughters who will became their own person who the sex more likely to be a helper?#American families may be more likely to choose female embryos but the international clients are choosing male embryos#Making money off sex selection#We do not even know how many frozen embryos we have in the USA#At last count there were 400k frozen embryos and that count was taken 20 years ago#75% of fertility clinics advertise sex-selection#Live Action is a conservative site but it gives the statistics

Salem's Lot
It's not that we shouldn’t remake the classics. Without remakes we wouldn’t have films like Philip Kaufman’s INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS (1978), George Cukor’s A STAR IS BORN (1954) or Howard Hawks’ HIS GIRL FRIDAY (1940). But we shouldn’t have to deal with remakes like Gary Dauberman’s watered down SALEM’S LOT (2024, Max). Although far from non-stop monkey dump, it turns Tobe Hooper’s adaptation of the Stephen King novel into a nightmare in beige.
Even allowing Dauberman had the disadvantage of comparison between a three-hour-plus miniseries, and his two-hour-minus feature there are artistic choices that diminish the original film and novel. Chief among them is the opening. The TV version starts with a framing scene that creates a world in which the protagonists played by David Soul and Lance Kerwin live on the run from the vampire hordes slowly taking over the world. It then flashes back to Soul’s return to his childhood home, contrasting the broken world of the present with the idyllic small town of the past. Dauberman, however, eschews the framing story to start right out with horror, depicting the arrival of the vampire’s coffin at the Marsden house in Jerusalem’s Lot, ME. After a few jump scares, we get a cursory depiction of small-town life, hardly enough to make us mourn the loss of a more serene existence.
When the vampires start rising, Dauberman goes for more overt scares. The vampire child floating outside one boy’s window are so eerily made up it takes massive amounts of hypnosis to get him to welcome them in. And you may find yourself saying of even capable players, “You’re no James Mason, Bonnie Bedelia, Lew Ayres, Geoffrey Lewis, Marie Windsor or Elisha Cook, Jr.” The vampire’s human servant, Straker (Pilou Asbaek), is reduced to a virtual walk-on, with none of the sexual ambiguity Mason got to play on TV. But then, the overall effect here is more sanitized than anything Hooper and writer Paul Monash had gotten away with on TV back in 1979.
There are a few eerie sequences — a child’s hearing strange noises in his back yard after dark and the romantic leads (Bill Pullman and Mackenzie Leigh) and the town doctor’s (Alfre Woodard) fighting off a reanimated corpse in a funeral home with a makeshift cross made out of tongue depressors. And though the ending loses the tortured ambiguity of King’s novel and Hooper’s adaptation, it does offer some unique approaches to vampiricide. The only actors not suffering from comparison to the miniseries are Woodard, who’s always great and brings a little sass to her role as the town doctor, and Jordan Preston Carter as Mark, the only kid in town smart enough to figure out what’s happening. Somebody put them in a film with a decent script to make up for this misguided morass.

you know you love me.
Meet MANNY SANTOS, or if you read the Anti Grapevine, THE STARLET. She is a 23 year old ACTRESS, that currently resides in THE UPPER EAST SIDE.
She is known around the city for her CHARMING & IMPULSIVE demeanor, but they may be hiding something… SHE HAD AN ABORTION OVER THE SUMMER.
OLIVIA RODRIGO, CISFEMALE, SHE/HER.
Manny Santos came from humble beginnings – Her parents made a modest living with their laundromat, but they never had excess. She was raised in a remarkably strict home, one where one thing was certain: Hard work will always pay off. And in Manny’s case, despite her parents uncertainty – that came true. Starting with her role on West Drive as a child and teen, her fame quickly grew and two things followed: Her family moved from Brooklyn to Manhattan, now able to afford the lifestyle they wanted but never had, and Manny became America’s Sweetheart. Under the careful watch and management of her parents, Manny didn’t see much of her earnings – A majority went to outstanding bills and her now upgraded education. At least, until she turned 18, and gained full control of her money, her life, and most importantly: Her image. It was then that she rebranded from child star to adult, taking on a new look and identity as an it girl, along with more adult roles. While this put a strain on her relationship with her family, her career has skyrocketed. The transformation left Manny feeling more like herself than ever before, even if the consequences follow close behind.
it's all about who you know.
EMMA NELSON. childhood best friend. Manny and Emma have been best friends since kindergarten, thick as thieves despite how different they grew up to be. They had seen one another through the entirety of their childhood, served as a rock and a voice of reason for one another. But as they’ve gotten older, they’ve started to grow apart – And neither is sure if they’ll reach a boiling point or be able to return to who they once were.
CRAIG MANNING, ASHLEY KERWIN. ex-boyfriend, and person to avoid. Ashley and Craig met while on tour, and quickly sparked a romance – With their shared love for music, they seemed like the perfect couple. That had been the case through their tour and there after, until Manny came into the picture. She’d just wanted to sleep with Craig, and he’d been game. Only their one time thing turned into a months long affair, becoming more emotional than just physical. The cheating was exposed on the Fourth of July by a lucky photographer, which blew up both relationships. The only person who knows Manny had an abortion is Craig.
TORI SANTAMARIA. cousin. words go here. The Santos and Santamaria family has always had a bit of tension – Tori’s mother is the sister of Manny’s father, and from the moment she married into wealth, a divide was created. The struggles and misunderstandings between siblings bled into the relationship their children have with one another. Manny and Tori have always been surface level friendly to one another – With the unspoken narrative that the two are always in competition with one another, because of their parents.

Well, we got a court date for our baby's adoption! On March 12, we'll finally be able to relax into knowing we'll get to watch him grow up, which has been a very real and constant tension in our minds since we unexpectedly said goodbye to our foster daughter in May. I didn't think my grief was survivable at first, and it's been my incredible luck to be led out of the darkness by a very insistent little person who wants to sit in my lap and play peekaboo until he laughs himself silly. Baby Kerwin has been such an incredible joy to be around, I can't even tell you. He's three days shy of being 17 months old, and is incredibly confident on his feet for such a young toddler. The little doppler effect of his buddabUDDABUDDABUDDAbudda cartoon run has become the best part of my day. He is just busy busy busy all the time, and he has to race to investigate the next thing on his packed baby to-do list. Other very cute things he's into right now are dance parties (or, for him, more like he hears music and starts spinning joyfully wherever he is and he desperately wants you to join in too), giving big passionate hugs to our labrador, and offering high fives to everyone. <3 <3 <3
He is the most affectionate little ray of sunshine, and I can't wait to be his legal dad!
He's going to wear a silly little formal outfit with a bowtie, and we're trying to think of ways to make it special for him since he's way too little to understand what's happening. (That might be something for future years and "gotcha day" celebrations) It's the middle of the week, so it's not so convenient for us to go on an awfully big adventure. We'll have to think of something that would make an impression on a toddler!
