“'The Music Of Cheops' es una extraña fantasía de improvisación libre sobre la música imaginaria del antiguo Egipto. Conceptualmente no se aleja demasiado de la recientemente reeditada “Harps Of The Ancient Temples” de Gail Laughton, pero en lugar de influencias de arpa y música clásica, éste canaliza el jazz improvisado y la sensibilidad acústica proto-new age”.

"La estrella principal aquí es la flauta de Douglas, así como las grabaciones de campo y los ambientes únicos capturados en la Cámara del Rey de la Gran Pirámide (Giza, Egipto). Al ser un vasto espacio de granito pulido, este espacio imbuye las exploraciones abstractas de Douglas sobre la variedad de tipos de instrumentos de viento (flauta C y flauta alto, saxofón soprano, flauta dulce soprano, flauta egipcia) con resonancias ricas y una reverberación lujosa".

Mis pesquisas - hay que buscar- me han llevado a este curioso y fascinante álbum de Steve Douglas, que también buscaba, no "se quedaba siempre en el mismo sitio", inmovilismo más que anti artístico, imposible, y por tanto vano e inútil porque incluso aunque no queramos todo se mueve y es imposible sustraernos al 100% de los cambios que nos rodean.

Su segundo LP "The Music Of Cheops", autoeditado en 1976, no tiene nada que ver con el easy listening de su debut "Reflections in a Golden Horn" de 1969, ni con sus históricas grabaciones pop ("Pet Sounds") y rock ("Have 'Twangy' Guitar Will Travel"). Lució sus dotes como multi instrumentista en un disco dedicado a Keops, segundo faraón de la cuarta dinastía del Imperio Antiguo de Egipto. Ejecución y sonido extraordinarios para un disco mágico. Completo y crujidito.

When Mikael Wiehe turned 60 in 2006, his brother organised a celebratory music event where several swedish musicians were invited to perform Wiehe's songs. Joakim Thåström honored his childhood hero with his version of Keops Pyramid [x]

The first time Thåström performed the song it was together with Wiehe and his Hoola Bandola Band in a 1999 commemorating the late Björn Afzelius. He was introduced by Wiehe as follows:

"In 1973 when Hoola Bandola Band stood at the height of fame, a pale, thin, pimply youngster sat on his unmade bed in his teenage-room in a Stockholm suburb, and with blistered hands he tried to play through the blue lyrics book for 'Vem kan man lita på'. Now one of his childhood dreams is coming true; to sing Keops pyramid with Hoola Bandola Band. Ladies and gentlemen, Joakim Thåström!" [x]

El nuevo Gran Museo Egipcio de Guiza.

Esta semana, después de años de retrasos, se realizó una inauguración de prueba de las 12 primeras salas de este increíble museo, además de la Gran Escalera de estatuas monumentales.

Albergará más de 100,000 objetos del antiguo Egipto, entre ellos, el tesoro completo de la tumba de Tutankamón (que aún no se abre al público).

El museo fue diseñado por el estudio irlandés Heneghan Peng Architects, con una fachada de 1 km de largo y alineado con las Pirámides de Keops y Micerino.

Last song?

Honestly, I don't tend to listen much to music. Most of the time when I have Spotify on, it's a podcast, or I just go to my liked songs and hit shuffle.

I did deliberately listen to Keops pyramid the other day, though. It's a Swedish political song from the 70s which uses the creation of the pyramids, as well as the Tower of Babel, to make a commentary about class warfare. It's not terribly accurate to how pyramids work – the rich people are described as being at the top of the pyramids, and the people below slaves – but it's still a good song!

"So it seems that in every era and among all people there are those who want to create pyramids. Where they themselves are at the top and have the power in their hands, while those who live below obey them. But if those up at the top no longer want to understand, but despise all the people who give them food, the pyramids will end up being their graves."

Favorite color?

Purple and black. Used to be more black when I was younger, now more purple.

Currently watching?

The Eighth Sense, Teenage Bounty Hunters, and the Swedish version of Antiques Roadshow. I've also been watching Last Twilight and Percy Jackson, but I've fallen behind.

Also, the film festival I volunteer with has opened for submissions, so I watch a lot of short films, trying to decide which ones we should show.

Last movie?

I'm halfway through Clue. (*whispers* I don't like it much.) Latest one seen in the theaters was Monster. That, on the other hand, was amazing.

Sweet/Spicy/Savory?

Can I say salty? Otherwise sweet, I guess.

Relationship status?

Extremely single and loving it!

Current obsessions?

I'm kind of between obsessions at the moment. Although, if someone wants to come talk to me about Vanity Fair (the Thackeray novel), please do! I read it over the holidays, and while I haven't had the energy to write a full meta about it, I have So Many Thoughts. I wish we could do it as a Tumblr book club, like Dracula Daily (but preferably not in real time, since the story takes about 15 years to play out).

Last thing you googled?

I use duckduckgo for the most part, but the last thing I searched there was what kind of charger cable I need for my cellphone. (I keep forgetting and need a spare.)

After finishing a second watch of The K.E.OP/S System (2022), my nonbinary wife asked me how to describe it, for a friend, and I found myself staring into space for quite a long time.

What exactly is this movie, frantic yet languid, intensely dark while lightly comic? A movie where a vast conspiracy network is uncovered and yet where it remains completely undiscovered. Our protagonists fucking up in an ever forward stumble towards the least competent agents of this conspiracy. It's a movie about itself, about watching and being watched, about an ever recursive pyramid of unsuspecting shlubs in search of a story, a blackmail scheme with no payout and no end game besides self perpetuation.

It's The Conversation if it was a farce instead of a tragedy, if was less about descent into paranoia and more about peeling back the layer of paranoia to discover the conspiracy is real, and it's him, Pagliacci the great clown, waiting for you to ask if you can make him laugh now that you know the answer, and you can't.

What is it about? So much is happening, but it's not about anything. But it is, it's vitally aware of the panopticon not as a modern prison but as a theater of the highest absurdity because no one is watching anymore but we're all still performing. And if we decide to turn around and look back, to crawl down that keyhole lense to find out who is looking out, we just find someone else performing the same pantomime show as ourselves.

How would I try to summarize KEOPS, a story about the saddest people succeeding in a way that is a total failure to accomplish unspecified goals? I would probably need to watch it one more time, maybe then I can unravel the mystery.
