Leaning against the bar, Richie tries and fails to get the bartender’s attention. He can’t really blame her though; the women she is talking to are really pretty. Taking a deep breath Richie turns back to the main room in time to see him coming over.

“Oh, Jesus,” Richie mutters under his breath. The guy that’s making his way quickly over has been following Richie all over the bar all night long. He’d thought he’d lost him when he went to the bathroom, but apparently not. “Hey Rose!” Richie calls out to the bartender. “Flirt with those women some other time, you’ve got a thirsty patron over here.”

Rose laughs, says something to the women, and they all laugh louder. The bartender comes over.

“Yes, Richie? How can I help you?” She leans closer.

Richie opens his mouth to reply, but the annoying man interjects, “Whatever it is, give us two and make them strong. I’m paying.”

Smiling a little at Richie, Rose waits.

“Water. Please.”

“You got it, babe. Two strong waters coming up.” Rose winks and goes to get them some water.

“Water? Really?” The man asks.

“Yeah, water. It’s getting late.”

The man scowls at Richie. “It’s barely ten.”

“Yeah, well, I turn into a pumpkin at eleven.”

“I thought it was midnight.”

Richie groans.

Rose comes back and gives them their drinks. Both Rose and Richie wait for the man to hand over some money, but when he doesn't move, Richie pulls out his own wallet and hands over a twenty.

“Keep the change, Ro.”

“Thanks, Richie. Need anything else?”

“When Stan gets here, tell him to find me,” Richie says.

“You got it.” Rose winks and walks away.

“Stan? Who is Stan?” The man asks as Richie takes a sip of his water.

“My boyfriend.”

“Boyfriend?” The man says in disbelief. “How any man could let you out of the house looking like that, I will never understand.”

“And what’s that supposed to me?” Richie asks before he can stop himself.

“You look good, Richie.”

Scoffing, Richie looks down at himself. He’s wearing old faded jeans, a t-shirt that says TWO SEATER with arrows pointing up and down, and a plaid overshirt.

Snorting with laughter, Richie says, “Yeah, ok.” He takes a deep breath and lets it out slowly. “Look, Mark, right?” The man nods. “I’m sure you’re very nice, but I have a boyfriend, ok? I’m not interested. I’m sorry.”

“Oh, come on. I was just looking for a little conversation.”

“No, you were looking for a little d.’

“Come on, Richie!” Mark rolls his eyes.

They argue for another ten minutes about what Mark’s motives were when Stan comes up to them and Richie wraps an arm around him.

“Hey, baby. How are you?” Stan asks as he plants a gentle kiss on Richie’s cheek.

“Stan, thank fuck. Please get me away from him. He hasn’t left me alone all night and I am this close to committing a murder.” Richie holds his hand up with his index and forefinger together. They are almost but not quite touching.

“Oh, real nice!” Mark says. “Real nice! You’re a fucking asshole, you know that Richie Tozier.” He’s yelling now and people are turning to stare.

Without even talking about it, Stan leads Richie to the exit and Mark follows.

“A real gent, a real class act, a real—” He stops when a bouncer named Joe comes over to them.

“Is there a problem over here?” Joe asks. “Is this man bothering you, Richie?”

“Oh, of course you’d take his side! Wouldn’t want something to taint your image, wouldn’t—” Mark yells.

“It’s fine. We’re leaving,” Richie says.

Joe looks between them. “You don’t have to leave on account of him. He’s leaving whether or not you do.”

“It’s ok, I’m tired,” Richie says as Mark says, “Me? Leave? I don’t don’t want to go anywhere! I’m perfectly—”

“Nah, you’re done. And you’re going to go quietly if you don’t want to get banned,” Joe says. He pulls Mark towards the door, and Richie hopes he fights, but of course he goes quietly.

Richie sighs when they are alone.

“Think they’ll let us go out the back?” Richie asks. Stan kisses his cheek again.

“Do you really want to leave? I just got here,” Stan says.

“Yeah, sorry.” Richie sighs. “He just sucked all the fun right out of me.”

Smiling, Stan laughs and nods. “Ok, love. Let’s go see if they’ll let us out the back.”

They walk to the bar to talk to Rose and she lets them out into the back parking lot a few minutes later so they can go home and try and salvage the rest of their evening.
