Ken’s Artisan Bakery

I found out about Ken’s Artisan Bakery by browsing Chef’s Feed’s recommendations for Portland.  After determining that I wanted to visit several places around the bakery on the Northwest side of Portland, I decided to have lunch at the Bakery.

I ordered the Ken Hero, a sandwich with an array of deli-meats, like mortadella, salami, and capicola, served with asiago cheese and iceberg lettuce in a ciabatta roll.  I cannot overstate how incredible the bread on this sandwich was.  It was perfectly crusty on the outside, but not dense, certainly not something that would hurt your teeth to bite into.  And below it crusty exterior, the interior was soft and flavorful.  The deli meats were very good, but what really stood out to me about this sandwich was the amazing bread, which just may be the best baked bread I’ve ever had.

For dessert, I ordered their cannelle.  While it seemed small at $2.50, it actually took a good number of bites to finish, and overall I felt it was worth the price.  The outside was caramelized, and the interior was soft and custard-like right at the center.  The sweetness level was perfect.

The bakery was busy but comfortable during its lunch rush.  I would definitely come back again if I ever find myself in Portland.
