Part 2: Moving on to my other favorite current hip hop label @backwoodzstudioz The Last album in this update is the latest album from Billy Woods and Kenny Segal (@kennysegal ), "Hiding Places" I grabbed both a vinyl & CD copy of this album and I'm sure glad I did! Enshrining my favorite albums in vinyl is something that always feels necessary to me, but I also especially love getting hip hop albums on CD because so often they just make such great driving music. I'm even more happy to own this awesome CD edition of "Hiding Places" because LOOK AT ALL THAT AWESOME ARTWORK THAT COMES IN THE CD BOOKLET! I love all these grimy ass fairytale pictures and all the lyrics are printed in here as well! The vinyl edition doesn't have a booklet at all so missing out on all of this would have been a bummer. I highly recommend you pick up both versions as well. In case it wasn't already clear, this is ALSO one of the best hip hop albums from this year. I began working on this series of paintings for a show that I was going to have at Fleet Wood SF in October... and then covid happened.

For the start of this series, I decided to go to a square format after I was lucky enough to work on the cover art for hemlock_ernst and kennysegal’s “Back at the House” (a truly fantastic album! If you haven’t heard it I would recommend checking it out as well as hemlock_ernst’s current album “As long as you are” with futureislands and kennysegal’s new “Kenstrumentals Vol 4: A lot on my plate).

The square offered up a nice change of pace for me, and I started being able to do the smaller paintings with lots of detail that I am fond of, but in a collection on a larger scale to tell a story with a painting. Previous to this, I have published 3 zines—which are essentially small art books / poems—each page contained one image and one line of the poem. With this new square format, I’ve been able to make the painting the story and the poem. I’ve taken inspiration from many places, from Chris Ware, jtsw (whom I’ve helped install many of his fantastic murals), Don DeLillo, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Rebecca Solnit, Ray Bradbury, hipcatscience, James Baldwin, alexanderlaird, galasadurni, Will Eisner, Italo Calvino... and I realize now if I keep naming things I’ll just go on forever.

Over quarantine I made a one page comic “Connected by Light” which you can view at connectedxlight.com which further pushed the story telling / comic book aspect. Then I had another opportunity to do a large mural with stanthonysf, which is still up at the time of this posting in Alamo Square Park, for their 70 Years inspired by Hope. To do these small scale paintings large was a dream, and galasadurni and I pumped out this huge piece in one week.

So now we’re here. I’ve completed one painting for the fleetwood_sf show, and recently showed it at the hospitalityhousesf window gallery for their “Made in 2020” exhibiting. Would highly recommend checking out Hospitality House
