My Friend Irma Goes West
In the sequel to "My Friend Irma," titled "My Friend Irma Goes West," Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, alongside John Lund, Maire Wilson, and Diana Lynn, embark on a new comedic journey directed by Hal Walker in 1950.
Up next on my Dean Martin/Jerry Lewis marathon is the sequel to 1949’s “My Friend Irma,” the 1950 film “My Friend Irma Goes West,” directed by Hal Walker and released the same years as their third movie “At War with the Army”. While we see a change of director, the main cast remains the same. Returning with Martin and Lewis are John Lund, Marie Wilson, and Diana Lynn. I must say, this is one of…

A very young Kenneth Haigh stars as intrepid reporter Tony Johnson in The Vise: Week-End Guest (1.26, ABC, 1955); this episode eventually aired in the UK in 1962 as part of ITV's Tension anthology
#fave spotting#kenneth haigh#the vise#man at the top#joe lampton#tension#1955#abc#1962#character actors#for more on the complexities of The Vise see previous faves spotted blah blah yadda yadda#i wouldn't perhaps class Haigh as a fave usually‚ or at least one for spotting; no slight intended‚ actually he's an actor i enjoy very#much and whose work is always worth checking out. it's just that i wouldn't normally get the urge to make a little post about him popping#up. the novelty here is simply how incredibly young he is; this is one of his very first screen appearances‚ not only many years before his#(arguably defining) role as Joe Lampton in Man at the Top‚ but actually before Joe Lampton even existed (John Braine wouldn't publish#his first novel Room at the Top until 1957). before he was well known on screen‚ Haigh was a firebrand on the stage but this guest spot#predates even that: it would be the following year that he originated the role of Jimmy Porter in John Osborne's seminal Look Back in Anger#winning glowing reviews (not enough to prevent him being passed over for Richard Burton in the 1959 film version)#taking the play to Broadway‚ Haigh ended up staying a while and toyed with a career in the states; he even squeezed in an episode of#The Twilight Zone‚ but ended up returning home and settling into a career as one of Britain's pre eminent character actors#tho i think his first love (as with many of his generation) remained the stage

being #that #guy. re this mcr promo. Fascist (Nazi esp) Appropriation is such a weird important part of both punk and gay culture, historically. VERY VERY disturbingly so, and i dont fetishize it myself. but its still a part of the history. part of it is the appropriation of the pain and horror, part of it is ignorance and misuse of shock. take kenneth anger's scorpio rising and his gay nazi bikers. critiqued in araki's doom generation. eroticized in the night porter, with controversial gay icon dirk bogarde. also a big part of cabaret, ESP i feel in its modern version.
more here and probably way more places. from the article: "But, however bizarre, I think the film [Night Porter] is far superior to sugary, sentimental and illiterate pictures such as Life Is Beautiful or Jojo Rabbit. Perhaps there is something in its very crassness, horror and tastelessness that does at least jolt us towards an acknowledgment of pure evil." i do have a surface gentile understanding of it, so i understand if i dont get the magnitude of distress and this is unsensitive. and im not saying mcr is fetishizing nazis or fascists at all. but there is. an allusion.

Macbeth cope list
What a lovely theatre it was so beautiful in there the CEILING was so nice. The chairs were comfy too. Uh the walls? They were great also. And the floors were walkable no doubt about it
No problems with the headphones at all except for early on when they all started dancing and jumping around the sound went nuts and the music got really staticy. Not sure if we just got a fritzy night or if thats a problem theyve consistently dealt with. The second the dancing stopped though it was fine again so!
Thats a big part of what really impressed me with the sound too it felt like you could really hear how tightly controlled it was and how much attention to detail theyd put into it with switching peoples mics on and off and adjusting volume when they shouted and looping and overlaying voices. And the sound effects worked really well!!! Incredibly effective and immersive. Sidenote a lady sat in front of us was like oh theres headphones? What are these for? Like i forgot not everybody has dedicated their lives to seeing this play and knows all about it
One downside might be that the audience cant hear themselves so theres a lot of coughing and sneezing and snuffling and snorfing and at one point someones alarm went off and when macduff was doing his all my pretty chickens moment someone was genuinely hacking up a lung behind us. I wonder if thats annoying for the actors LOL i hope the donmar proshot doesnt have a lot of that in the final mix because ill just die
LOVED the use of the glass partition the way theyd have everyone seated in a row and delivering the sort of expositiony lines like i said before. Especially in the second half of macbeth theres a lot of back and forth between lots of short scenes so i really liked the way they dealt with that it never lost momentum. And when they opened the glass and started CLIMBING OUT that was so great
Actually a favourite element was how everyone would start climbing onto the stage and crawling towards macbeth and grasping out at him that was so DELICIOUSLY creepy. Shout out to rona morrison who played lady macduff the woman with the red hair in braids she would crack this extremely unsettling smile whenever she went witchy mode and my eye was always drawn to her.
I have so many macbeths to compare this to bc i watched so many this year and this one is up there as a favourite for sure. I think the descent into madness is hard to do in a way that feels natural and not hammy but we can HEAR the voices in their heads and feel the pressure they feel as everything goes weird around them and the guilt starts to eat at them. I believed it i really did!! The sort of Snap the shift between when hes seeing the dagger versus when duncans dead and hes covered in blood again. YAYYY!!!!! I especially believed his speech about banquo that sort of escalation drawn out by paranoia when hes like make THEM kings???? The SONS of banquo. KINGS??? its like here we go girls…
Also comparing it to all the other macbeths i saw its SO GOOD to have an all scottish cast LOL it really is crazy how that simple change adds so so much
Cush jumbo and her big bright eyes HER EYESSSS shes a very powerful glowy presence in her white dress i loved the way she did this sort of gesture like shes having a migraine paired with the sound and the lights sort of getting keyed up and the ghostly child behind them both and the way she did the out damned spot WAIL and how she said come come give me your hand down low and sweet like to a little kid oh my god…
Im jumping around a lot but the porter was really fun and the way they really harshly snap back into the world of the play after it was really cool like the whole scene was all in HIS head too mmmm
I love when its funny GENUINE comedy like hahaha laughing out loud. It was a rough night! So annoying when you know it could be funny but the actors like nah this is serious business or my name isnt sir kenneth charles branagh. Lets have a giggle mate it makes the frightening parts scarier it makes the tragedy more depthful lets experience the range of human emotions together come on lets go
I just want to keep saying things that worked like the music worked the lights worked the smoke worked the bit where everyones being the witches worked the one child actor playing all the children worked the banquos ghost scene REALLY worked you have DISPLACED the MIRTH the idea that the two of them are carrying a lot of baggage from war and the loss of a child really REALLY works. I think thats the best compliment i can give it like theres nothing i feel like didnt achieve what they were going for or fell short. Im really really impressed by it super super super pleased for everyone for bringing the vision to life so clearly and effectively
David tennant was really good
#just listing everything i can think of im just listing them in a list thats all i can do its all i can manage#macbeth

Notes:
Fantastic capture of this incredibly immersive and beautiful production. there is a bar in the bottom right corner of the screen that doesn't take away except for one moment where Gandalf and Frodo are talking on the stairs in act one, but overall I worked around it and you can always see Frodo and sometimes Gandalf. At points people are in the audience and I wasn't able to capture them but you can always hear them and I do my best to always try to make sure to capture anything in the audience that I could. Some washout and shakiness throughout.

Beautiful Capture of Abe, Larkin and Haley's last performance with the company. My camera was having a lot of issues for Act 1, 2 minutes is missing during ready set (still has audio), And then after every song there's a short 2 second blackout. Act 2 is perfect with no issues with my camera. Also the last US stop before a month break and then Mexico! Some washout and shakiness throughout.

The Black Seminoles: History of a Freedom-Seeking People
The Black Seminoles: History of a Freedom-Seeking People
“A powerful and stirring story.”—San Antonio Express-News “An epic tale of desperate, unwitting fugitives who would—without exaggeration—defeat armed forces both white and Indian, make possible settlement of the West, earn the country's highest military honors, and have nothing to show for it.”—Miami Herald
“This fascinating story chronicles the lives of fugitive slaves who aligned themselves with Seminole Indians in Florida beginning in the early 1800s, fought with them in the Second Seminole War, and were removed, along with them to Indian Territory, where they struggled to remain free. To prevent reenslavement, their remarkable leader, John Horse, led much of the group to Mexico. . . . Recommended.”—
Library Journal “Porter spoke directly with Chief Horse's descendants and with older black Seminoles who either knew him or had heard first-hand stories about him. . . .
A gripping account of a people's struggle both for identity and freedom.”—Naples Daily News “This book's sweep is broad, its story is provocative, and the human saga it evokes is compelling.
No exercise in political correctness, this is a detailed, factual account of a remarkable people's struggle for survival over multiple generations and in the face of calamitous challenges. This history will surprise, while it intrigues. Kenneth Porter has made an enduring contribution, for which we are indebted to him.”—Tampa Tribune

MY MACBETH REVIEW. except that makes it sound so formal this is just me saying things. and it’s long too so no one will read im sure except like three of you 🙏
spoilers for the production if ur seeing it i suppose but not really. and spoilers for macbeth but i mean it’s 400 years old so that’s your problem
okay so it was crazy good. really sort of…bare but in a sort of gothic and chilling way. it felt modern without being too full of itself. the sound design was great and i also really loved the celtic folk music they had going on. i ADORED the witches at the start as voices in vapours and also how they had the whole company play them in their later scene. i think it’s possibly the most successful demonstration of macbeth being tormented/haunted that i’ve seen. the choreography was wonderful both here and in the final battle. plus i adored the donmar it’s my first time going there and man. it being so small is wonderful! it really is the most intimate theatre in london
context wise i especially thought how they focused on the loss of a child was engaging. it’s something that i personally haven’t seen focused on much in a lot of productions and it was really interesting that they only had one child cast member to play the children. i know that’s common in productions like this with limited casts but it was really made to be read into. like it wasn’t subtext it was text. that they set him up as THEIR child at the start, and throughout macbeth would interact with tenderness before violence was so so interesting and well-done. that they were haunted by their lost child who they saw in everything and yet still murdered. and the fact that fleance and young siward were both CHILDREN was like. crazy. sickening even. when macbeth kills young siward it was mad too like i gasped as did half the theatre.
another thing is the fact that even though it was a ‘shorter’ production it didn’t feel idk. frantic or rushed. i think coming off the back of seeing lear with kenneth branagh i was unsure about it bc that DID feel rushed and lost a lot of emotion bc of it. this wasn’t the case at allll with macbeth it felt perfectly paced and remained thrilling and tense throughout.
i think some people think the headphone thing was gimmicky but personally i really enjoyed it. it leant itself to parts of the performance (eg. whispers, clinking daggers, the sort of things u wouldn’t typically hear) and i enjoyed how it built atmosphere and tension but my favourite bit of it is that it sort of added a level of separation between say, the ghost of banquo and the witches and the ‘reality’ of the scene. without the headphones they do not exist. it’s involving but also plays with what is real and what isn’t. i did actually remove them a couple of times and tbh i did enjoy some parts of the performances more without them but overall it was utilised well and was more than a gimmick to me.
performances ummm. they were brilliant. cush jumbo was awesome and has such a stage presence which is so important for lady macbeth. very understated charisma that rlly lends itself to all of her character…i LOVED the porter they were soooo fun and funny and did great audience work AND gave me my pantomime fix for the year. and of course david tennant was brilliant. the hype was real he is very good isn’t he. and i’m saying this as a frequent killjoy. and i did like to see him get thrown around and picked up by women
okay ummm yes. i hope they film it so u can all see it alternatively i wish you all well in getting no-shows/daily tix/standing

Notes under the cut:
CAST: Jeremy Stolle (u/s Phantom of the Opera), Julia Udine (alt Christine Daaé), Greg Mills (u/s Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny), Janinah Burnett (Carlotta Giudicelli), Stephen Tewksbury (Monsieur André), Craig Bennett (Monsieur Firmin), Maree Johnson (Madame Giry), Carlton Moe (Ubaldo Piangi), Sara Esty (Meg Giry), Carrington Vilmont (Auctioneer), Joseph DePietro (Monsieur Reyer/Hairdresser), Kenneth Kantor (Monsieur Lefévre/Firechief), David Michael Garry (Joseph Buquet/Don Attilio), Scott Mikita (Passarino), Justin Peck (Hannibal Solo Dancer), Kfir (Il Muto Solo Dancer), Marni Raab (Page), Chris Georgetti (Porter/Fireman), Patricia Phillips (Spanish Lady), Satomi Hoffman (Wardrobe Mistress/Confidante), Elizabeth Welch (Princess), Kelly Jeanne Grant (Madame Firmin), Paul A. Schaefer (Marksman)
I’m not sure who was on for the Jeweler or the Innkeeper’s Wife.
Notes: Program pictures included in file. This is the first audio I’ve ever recorded, and it was not recorded with the intention of ever sharing it. That being said, you will hear me laughing, cheering, and possibly crying (....crying specifically during All I Ask of You). I also had a friend with me, so you will hear her whisper to me on occasion. The sound quality is pretty good, though. This was recorded from the third row and there are a couple nice details you can catch if you’re listening closely. I am sharing this for all the Jeremy Stolle stans because he was being such a menace in the best way during this performance. It’s also just such a fun trio, I was beyond delighted to have caught them. Though it haunts my dreams that Jordan Donica’s last show would have been with Jeremy Stolle had his run not ended early.
Let me know if either of the links aren’t working! Enjoy :)
@marleneoftheopera @nerdywriter36 you guys asked for this so here you go!

WELCOME TO MY SUPER AWESOME 100 CHARACTER BATTLE!!
this bracket has 100 of my favorite characters in it (i have plenty more i just couldn’t fit them :’))
how the format works:
- the first rounds will consist of four characters up against each other, the two that have the most votes move on to the next round
- in the second rounds, the next four will go head to head (the two that win from one team and the two that won from the other) and one character will advance
- the next round will have the next two battle (the one that won from one team and the one that won from the other team) and one will advance
- the round after that will be the same as the last one except this one will decide the winner of that division, who will win?? who knows!
each poll will last for around one week, so you have plenty of time to vote for your favorite characters!
(i think it would also be funny if i gave trophies to the character with the least amount of votes overall and the character with the most votes overall)

Kenneth Clark - Civilisation
