KEVIN DEVINE SHARES VIDEO FOR ‘BOTH WAYS’
Punk troubador KEVIN DEVINE has shared a slice of defiant tour life with a live video for Both Ways via Brooklyn Vegan.
Made by Kenna Hynes and Tiny Ship Co., the video features live audio and footage from his headlining tour last winter with PINEGROVE and PETAL. Speaking about Both Ways (taken from last year’s exceptional record Instigator), Devine says:
"I wrote Both Ways in the summer of 2015, before the Trump candidacy had really picked up much ominous steam. It was kind of a more broadly directed critique/assessment of some deeper, more structural issues I've had with both parties for some time (though in truth the Republican party's current radicalism makes the centrist corporate Democratic establishment feel light years preferred, which is a really twisted accomplishement). I guess it's about the two faces America wears, about how our mythologizing & relative economic/cultural pole-position & our imperial militarism are inextricably linked, and about what strikes me as tragically & fundamentally hypocritical about Modern American Capitalist Christianity. Those all seemed to live under this larger roof, this idea that you theoretically shouldn't get to be both things, the bully & the victim, the cop & the robber, the lion & the lamb, and that in claiming both spaces, the center can't hold, and things fall apart. Which it feels like is happening, at least to me. That said, nothing is so simple; it was kind of an exercise in being a little more black & white than I ever let myself be, in life or music. Kenna shot & traveled with PINEGROVE the whole run, and we all bonded pretty hard, especially after the election, where the shows became a place for people to feel good or feel scared or heal a bit or commiserate or freak out and these kinds of songs started to feel even more pointed and focused. That trip with them & Julien & PETAL and my band - the Prince Brothers - and crew - Carly Hoskins & Megan Benavente - was one of my favorite tours I've ever done and it was fun to see Kenna cut it to such vivid effect." Kevin Devine releases “Both Ways” music video
Kevin Devine has released a new music video for “Both Ways.” The video, which was made by Kenna Hynes and Tiny Ship Co., is made up of live audio and footage from his headlining tour last winter.
The song comes off his 9th studio album Instigator, which was released last October.
Kevin had this to say about the meaning behind “Both Ways”:
"I wrote Both Ways in the summer of 2015, before the Trump candidacy had really picked up much ominous steam. It was kind of a more broadly directed critique/assessment of some deeper, more structural issues I've had with both parties for some time (though in truth the Republican party's current radicalism makes the centrist corporate Democratic establishment feel light years preferred, which is a really twisted accomplishement). GABI’s newest single “Whole With You” is devastatingly beautiful
From her forthcoming sophomore album, Empty Me. As GABI, Gabrielle Herbst makes ethereal-sounding songs that feel one step away from belonging on an opera stage. Her debut album, Sympathy, placed her vocals — as well as her breath work — forward as an instrument, as her songs took on a thin, gossamer quality that seemed to stretch infinitely upwards into the stratosphere.
Today, GABI debuts "Whole With You," the first single to her forthcoming sophomore album Empty Me, which is set to drop in October. Accompanied with a Kenna Hynes directed and René Kladzyk-styled video that looks like a Renoir painting come to life, the song is stunning in its execution and devastating in its composition—as if GABI's trying to send a message to God or some other spiritual being. Her voice soars in the hook, explaining, "I wanted to be whole with you."
"I wrote 'Whole With You' out of lots of fragments that I slowly pieced together into a song, which I think is aligned with its meaning — this idea of trying to find yourself through missing pieces you’ve left along the way, trying to become whole," GABI wrote of the song via email. "This song, in a lot of ways, is about accepting your own inadequacies, insecurities and messiness; it’s about becoming a whole person for yourself and others, and accepting yourself as you are." Watch above.

Ratboys – “Elvis Is In The Freezer” Video
Ratboys – “Elvis Is In The Freezer” Video
Last month, Chicago twosome Ratboys announced their sophomore album, GN, with “Control,” and today they’ve followed that up with a video for another new track, “Elvis Is In The Freezer.” On this one, Julia Steiner recounts having to put down an old pet, and it’s done with the right amount of sadness but also an impressive warmth and understanding. The video, which was directed by Kenna Hynes,…
