Northern Shrike 𝘓𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘶𝘴 𝘣𝘰𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴 This is a carnivorous songbird. I know! It uses its pointy little beak to get in and severe the spines of its prey. It then uses its bulbous, muscular hear to shake them about, subjecting them to upwards of 6G's (and I don't mean the next gen phone service). In Michigan it is known as the winter butcherbird. It is known for impaling its prey on thorns or barbed wire to eat later. This was shot through a fence at the north end of the Kenai Municipal Airport, nearly into the sun. Kenai, City of Lights Well, at least when the atmospheric conditions are right. These light pillars are the result of teeny-tiny flat snowflakes or disks of ice reflecting mostly in the vertical plane due to aerodynamics. The first shot of with the Sony DSC-F828 in full-spectrum mode. The second is with the DSC-HX400V, as is the video, both being much more like what you'd see in person. The blinking pillar is actually the rotating airport beacon, illustrating the very linear and vertical nature of this phenomenon. LifeMed Alaska This 1998 Cessna 208B Grand Caravan spent one night in Kenai this week. I saw it landing, but through obstacles. I barely caught it in its way out. It is an infrequent visitor. They operate the medevac helicopter stationed at Central Peninsula Hospital, so I'm guessing they were bringing someone in due to bed shortages. Denali was visible from the Upper Deck walkway (through the tinted glass) at the Kenai Municipal Airport this week. I also saw it in dawn's early light from above the dock at Offshore Systems Kenai in Nikiski. (Remember: the Port of Nikiski is south of Nikiski in Salamatof, whereas the dock in Nikiski Bay, in Nikiski, at the end of Nikishka Road, is the Arness Dock, though Arness Rd. and Arness Lake are south of Salamatof in North Kenai, though northeast of Upper and Lower Salamatof Lakes - must have been one heck of a dart game at that Borough meeting!). DC-3 "Hot Stuff" taking off low and slow, presumably with a heavy load. A startled passerby walking behind me can be heard saying, "That's hard... hard core!" These planes are busy all day in the summer delivering supplies of all kinds to villages in the bush that don't have road or river access.
