Kenai, City of Lights Well, at least when the atmospheric conditions are right. These light pillars are the result of teeny-tiny flat snowflakes or disks of ice reflecting mostly in the vertical plane due to aerodynamics. The first shot of with the Sony DSC-F828 in full-spectrum mode. The second is with the DSC-HX400V, as is the video, both being much more like what you'd see in person. The blinking pillar is actually the rotating airport beacon, illustrating the very linear and vertical nature of this phenomenon.
