NGC 6934, C47 // Bill Clugston

Observations with the Hubble Space Telescope of NGC 6934 revealed a number of strange stars called blue stragglers. These are stars that seem to lag behind the aging process, appearing younger than the rest of the stars they formed with. Perhaps these are stars that emerge from binary systems as one star steals material from another, burning hydrogen fuel faster, resulting in a hotter and bluer star.

3. Arrival

Abigail Evelyn Cooper eyed the large wooden crate in her parlor with a dubious glare. 

Her son-in-law had phoned that morning to tell her to expect a delivery sometime in the early afternoon. He hadn’t said what, only that it was a gift. She’d scoffed; men like Lyle Grisham didn’t give gifts without reason unless her daughter coaxed him into it to maintain the facade of goodwill between them. Whatever Lyle was sending over, Abigail was resigned to do as she’d always done: donate the undoubtedly lavish, useless item to charity.

She wasn’t prepared for the large black truck that pulled up to her curb or for the two burly men who emerged with an enormous box hefted between them. With all the grace of a rockslide, they entered and dropped the cargo into the first available room—tracking in dirt and dust with every step—while a third shoved a clipboard in her face requesting a signature for confirmation of delivery please-and-thank-you-very-much. Abigail bristled, but signed the damned document if only to get them out of her house. The man handed her a crisp, cream-colored envelope in exchange and murmured a rehearsed ‘Have a nice day,’ before the lot of them peeled away from the drive. 

Abigail shut the door in a huff. What a pity that polite chatter and courtesy were a thing of the past.

Sliding a finger beneath the envelope’s flap, she extracted the letter inside to find a card bearing an insignia embossed in gold. She’d seen that logo before… 

She shook her head to get it back on track and flipped it open to read the large-printed text inside: 

“Congratulations on your purchase of Combination Domestic/Caregiver Model 049113-C47! Please refer to the documentation and literature enclosed in your package for general care and arrival instructions. If you encounter any issues, please contact our Customer Service line. Thank you!”

Beneath the printed words was Sarah’s looping handwriting. An olive branch, of course. 

“If Whispering Willows and an in-home nurse are off the table, this is the next best thing. X.O. Sarah and Lyle.”  

Abigail stuffed the letter back into its envelope. Yes, both the senior home and the medical warden were off the table. “I’m not an invalid, for God’s sake!” she said aloud.

The lines in her brow deepened as another thought tacked itself on: ‘Not yet at least.’

Frowning, she examined the crate, fully expecting to have to ask Sophia next door if one of her sons could come over to pry it open. Luckily the heavy metal latches securing the lid had been removed by the delivery men. Only a pair of barrel bolts at each end were left. 

A strange dread filled her belly. The box was so large; what could the contents possibly be? Her hands shook slightly as she disengaged the locks and lifted the lid… only to drop it with a shriek as a pair of sapphire eyes squinted up at her from within.

The globular cluster NGC 6934 lies about 52,000 light years from the Sun in the outer reaches of our galaxy in the direction of the constellation Delphinus, the Dolphin. Discovered by William Herschel (1738-1822) in 1785, this cluster of stars is best seen during the summer in the northern hemisphere.
