Tornado No. 8, dated 12 May 1979. Similar to 2000AD ostensibly being edited by 'Tharg', Tornado was edited by the superhero 'Big E'.
The artist Dave Gibbons appeared as Big E on covers and in photo features in many issues.
Percy was Ken Armstrong, an editor and writer of strips such as Hook Jaw, Lofty's One-Man Luftwaffe and Tornado's own The Mind of Wolfie Smith.
I'm not sure who Sam was but might have been Bev Henry, an art editor on the comic along with the legendary Jan Shepheard (who created some of the greatest logos in comics).
Kevin O'Neill was Billy.
Rebellion.

Understanding that none of this was your fault—it was a horrible situation that was imposed on you—I wonder if there's something of value you can take from it. This might not be the last time in your life that you're misunderstood or mistrusted. I just wonder if there's a way to think about it, about how you might manage this kind of injustice, if it were to happen again.
— 'Unbelievable' (2019 miniseries), based on the Pulitzer Prize- and George Polk- Award-Winning article, 'An Unbelievable Story of Rape', about victims who were disbelieved by police.

yeah we’re right to make the dickmatized jokes about stewy going against his better judgement to back kendall Again. but this time it’s honestly fucking miserable. stewy has been trying to get kendall out since the beginning, since before the beginning, and then here he is at logans funeral and kendall wants back in. stewy backing him for ceo, yes was him letting kendall pull the friend card and yes was him letting his feelings cloud his judgement and yes was him being dickmatized to a dishonorable degree, but its also like. logan is dead. logan is dead and the company’s not in family control anymore and ken is halfway out the door and he has something good going on. logan is dead and one piece of paper has kendall diving back in. stewy’s been trying to get kendall out of logans control from the start and logan is dead and ken should be free but they’re at his funeral and kendall wants back in. ‘ken is your head on straight?’ genuinely i was surprised that he backed him because stewy wouldnt. because it makes bad business sense and because stewy doesnt want kendall at waystar in the first place. ‘what in it for me, ken?’ he wouldn’t do this but at this point its a resignation. its a last resort. i couldnt get you out when he was alive and now he’s dead and i still cant get you out so i’ll help you get it in because this is the last way i know how to help you at all. ‘i dont wanna live in a haunted house, kendall tells stewy, unaware that he already is, oblivious to the ghosts lurking around them both. they were fucking right. it IS around them both. in kendall’s haunted house the ghost is logan. in stewy’s haunted house the ghost is kendall.
#to now know the context of ‘around them both’ is to know suffering#the kenstewy scene really was just….like everything happening in it had me on cloud nine but i was also just. so fucking sad#and i couldn’t put it into words#like the resignation of stewy after ken tells him about the paper……..#’ken is your head on straight?’ just felt like ‘ken are you in there?’#jesse armstrong im in your walls#succession#succession spoilers#kendall roy#kenstewy#stewy hosseini#m

Also the fucking irony. Of Kendall getting mad at Tom for that unhinged line but then calling shiv a piece of dirt like 20 minutes later is not lost on me but also that really is the quintessential sibling experience, it has to be said
#have to think of ‘whose being nasty to Frank only I’m allowed to be nasty to frank’#also maybe that’s just me but for some reason when Roman and shiv fight awfully ppl are just like oh sibling fights LOL but whenever shiv#and Ken do people act like it’s wayyyy more serious. like guys they’ve done the worst things imaginable to each other and still forgave the#other person like#idk. that maybe hopefully is not the quintessential sibling experience but it is the quintessential Ken and shiv experience#succession#Kendall Roy#shiv Roy#they just do this. they’ll forget about it in 2 days (I say hoping and looking at Jesse Armstrong like you better not switch shit up this#time around ….)

It's no great stretch to say that virtually all popular music of the past 150 years is either fundamentally Black music (e.g., blues) or exists as the result of white artists and promoters appropriating Black music and distilling it for white consumption.
The first episode of the irritating 2019 Ken Burns documentary COUNTRY MUSIC, for instance, describes how country star A.P. Carter (uncle of June Carter Cash) would drive around the countryside getting Black blues musicians to share songs with him that he would then copyright in his own name (something the documentary presents as a perfectly normal thing to do, somehow). In A POCKET FULL OF DREAMS, the first part of his biography of Bing Crosby, jazz critic Gary Giddins makes a strong argument that Crosby — by far one of the most successful and influential pop vocalists of the 20th century — developed his vocal style by appropriating Louis Armstrong, of whom Crosby was a fan, and then adapting it to suit the audio parameters of the electronic microphone. Frank Sinatra, another of the 20th century's most influential pop vocalists, was strongly influenced by Billie Holiday, whom he admired greatly. (Sinatra's former valet, George Jacobs, told a touching if probably apocryphal story about Sinatra visiting Holiday in the hospital shortly before her death and trying, without any success, to help her score some smack.) And then of course there is Elvis Presley, whose appropriation of Black music is well-documented and much discussed.
Lines between musical genres are largely fictive and often exist in large part to enforce racial lines — the early episodes of COUNTRY MUSIC describe at some length (albeit with a frustrating lack of critical thought) the arbitrary nature of the distinction between "race music" (a.k.a. R&B) and "hillbilly music" (a.k.a. country) in the pre-WW2 radio and recording industries, and if you still think there's a quantifiable genre difference other than race, please listen to Ray Charles' 1962 opus MODERN SOUNDS IN COUNTRY AND WESTERN MUSIC and try again. White artists have been trying to colonize rap and hip-hop at least since Blondie's "Rapture," but listeners (or radio stations) that make a big deal out of eschewing rap and country don't usually seem to think Blondie or the Red Hot Chili Peppers or even the Beastie Boys and Eminem really count; why do you suppose that is? (Use both sides of paper if necessary.)
So, when people whine that they don't like rap music, or that rap isn't really music, it's really just saying, "Oh, I can still hear the Blackness — I don't like that, can you take that out?" Which, given the above, is absurd as well as offensive.
#music#ken burns#ken burns country music#ap carter#gary giddins#bing crosby#frank sinatra#louis armstrong#billie holiday#ray charles#the ken burns documentary is infuriatingly uncritical even when it presents outrageous shit#like henry ford's assertion that jazz was a jewish plot to africanize america#but its bland acceptance is itself instructive

I meant to post this after finale but it works now too in light of awards season.
Thank you to everyone who had a hand in bringing Succession to life. Thank you, Jesse Armstrong. Thank you Jeremy Strong for pouring everything into Kendall Roy. 🤍
Me: Awards don’t matter.
Also me: I want Jeremy Strong to win all the awards.
Also me: (paraphrasing since I can’t find exact Jeremy Strong quote from interview) ~the reward is in the work and everything else is gravy, except it’s really nice gravy.
Cheers to Succession cast & crew
