cucumber tree (of the magnolia family), who i just met yesterday and has just grown in the coolest way

70. When asked, are you embarrassed or enthusiastic to tell people that you write?

Ah.....not to be that person, but yes I do get embarrassed.

I think it's a mixture of not wanting to share the work with most people I know IRL (I once had a friend who also wrote fic and we had a falling out and she said some pretty hurtful things about my writing...junior high, amirite?) and then also I feel like...when I was growing up and entering fandom in the mid-2000s, fanfiction wasn't really a thing people were open about? Like it wasn't..."cool" to be a nerd (and not that I was EVER cool, but I digress) and as mentioned above there were times I was made fun of for it. So even though society has like...progressed and fanfiction is very much a more mainstream form of entertainment, I don't go around telling people in my real life I write it. (4 people know—Mr. Kelsey and my 3 best friends who have known me since I was 11, but only one of them is really into fanfic like I am.)

Don't know if that makes sense and didn't mean to turn this into a whole thing but 😅 I have been in fandom off-and-on for a long time a very complicated view on it. To those of you who are enthusiastic about it, I salute and envy you!

I order pickles on every sandwich or burger I get, but always take them off to eat separately. If a family member orders something that comes with a pickle on the side, they know to give it to me. Today I had the thought, "love and being known are shown through a side of pickles", because my dad put a side of pickles on my plate without me asking. He knew I'd want them, and intentionally left them off my sandwich.
