Not to make a serious post too much but remember how angry everyone rightly was about bread companies adding sesame because it's cheaper to poison people than clean your machinery?
Yeah well it's happening in other foods. I already posted about Kellogg's doing it to cereal bars and Austin Snack Crackers but now it's in greens CVS granola bars and Jenny Fucking Craig cheesecake which btw record level they added EVERY allergen to that shit.

10 Most Faced Moving Challenges And Some Methods To Solve Them
Tumblr media
10 Most Faced Moving Challenges And Some Methods To Solve Them
Moving to a new location in your own city or a different city is an exciting opportunity to live a new life in a new environment. But some problems are encountered while taking various steps to shift all your belongings to a new abode. These problems must not become unsolved obstacles and hinder your successful move.
Yes, it is possible to minimize many challenges that fall your way when you have planned your move. But you must be vigilant to bring tried and tested solutions to the dining table where things are being discussed moving plans. Your involvement in preparing the lists of tasks must be accompanied by a planned strategy to smoothen your relocation. Hire Kellogg Movers for safe and affordable moving company utah.
Here are a few problems that are faced during the process of moving and easy solutions that will save you energy and time.
1.   Large furniture or irregularly shaped items
The heavy furniture and objects that have always been decorating your house need a lot of effort to replace in a new location. Some double beds, wooden or iron almirahs, sofa sets, pianos, etc. are not easy to disassemble and relocate easily. So, take the help of the furniture moving company Utah with many years of experience in shifting every kind of piece without hassles and scratches. Rely on moving specialists to handle bulky and odd-designed furniture items with edges for safely reaching your new home of dreams.
Tumblr media
2.   Packaging stuff like plastics and cardboard
The packing materials like plastic sheets and containers made of cardboard or paper are a must for stocking all the necessary household things. It is necessary to purchase a lot of these in advance if you are planning to move to a new apartment. It will keep the delicate items safe that will be transported. Also, the chances of getting scratched will be reduced if proper packaging of the things is done before loading in the vehicle.
3.   Labeling boxes properly
When the stuff reaches your new home and you don’t remember where you packed the bedroom stuff and which box contains kitchenware, the situation is messier than you can imagine. So, take care to label all the boxes with details of the contents on the cardboard storage boxes. And it is important to label “THIS SIDE UP” on each box to open the box in the right direction. So, the problems of sorting out the things in the different rooms will vanish.
4.   Moving vehicles
The size of the moving vehicle is an important decision for the inter-city move. The trucks that can accommodate large furniture and boxes will be good if the weight to be transferred is more. Also if you wish to move your vehicles to a different city, vehicle relocation services can be hired to take care of two-wheelers and four-wheelers at affordable prices. Large container trucks are carrier vehicles for transporting cars and bikes without causing any damage is the services delivered at affordable prices.
5.   Hiring professionals
If you are in a fix if you need the help of a professional commercial moving company Utah for shifting office furniture or a residential moving company Salt Lake City for relocating to a new area, take advice from friends and family who have used professional services. It is an easy decision for the people who have to take care of their stuff every three years due to job transfer. They know the advantage of using help from the moving company or problems they face when managing the move.
6.   Time delays in transportation
The movers have proper schedules to follow for a planned move. Sometimes they arrive very late to the location and a useful day is wasted. So, make sure you are in touch with your moving company on the day of shifting right from the morning. Keep a track of the vehicle and confirm with the driver to stop any delay in the schedules.
7.   Excess of household things
Things are always adding in the house since the first day of your stay. So, when you are planning a move, it gives you a headache to sort out useful things from useless ones. But with a little time and effort, you can differentiate the stuff into categories and keep the most useful items for your convenience. You can sell and donate other useless things to downsize the stuff. If you are not sure about some furniture or vintage items, you can hire a separate storage place from a storage service provider that will stock your things temporarily for a period of time. The storage unit is away from your home, so you will be relieved that the house will look new and spacious.
8.   Dealing with breakage
Artworks and statues are valuable items in the household that need special attention while transporting. There are excellent packaging materials available for covering valuable glass crockery. Also using bubble wrap and plastic sheets for wrapping fragile items is a must to avoid breakage during the move.
9.   Advance booking for utilities
Utility services are the first things that are needed when you reach your new home. Electricity, gas connection, water, and the internet are the first things that you will use when you are settled. So, ask for all essential connections some days ahead of reaching your new location. Always confirm your arrival date with the companies that deal with water and electricity supply. Make sure to pay in advance to the internet company and the gas connection to avoid any inconvenience.
10.   Relocating with pets
Your loved ones like pets are more vulnerable when you are planning for relocation. The entire shifting process makes your cute pets tired and shocked at the same time. The professionals have expertise in dealing with pets. Packing all pet utilities in a separate box will be good. So keep a stock of pet food, feeding utensils for pets, medicines, sheets, and blankets. Also, put last but not least, the contact details of your pet’s vet, etc. in the same box.

A year in illustration, 2023 edition (part two)
Tumblr media
(This is part two; part one is here.)
Tumblr media
The West Midlands Police were kind enough to upload a high-rez of their surveillance camera control room to Flickr under a CC license (they've since deleted it), and it was the perfect frame for dozens of repeating clown images with HAL9000 red noses. This worked out great. The clown face is from a 1940s ad for novelty masks.
https://pluralistic.net/2023/08/23/automation-blindness/#humans-in-the-loop
Tumblr media
I spent an absurd amount of time transforming a photo I took of three pinball machines into union-busting themed tables, pulling in a bunch of images from old Soviet propaganda art. An editorial cartoon of Teddy Roosevelt with his big stick takes center stage, while a NLRB General Counsel Jennifer Abruzzo's official portrait presides over the scene. I hand-made the eight-segment TILT displays.
https://pluralistic.net/2023/09/06/goons-ginks-and-company-finks/#if-blood-be-the-price-of-your-cursed-wealth
Tumblr media
Working with the highest-possible rez sources makes all the difference in the world. Syvwlch's extremely high-rez paint-scraper is a gift to people writing about web-scraping, and the Matrix code waterfall mapped onto it like butter.
https://pluralistic.net/2023/09/17/how-to-think-about-scraping/
Tumblr media
This old TWA ad depicting a young man eagerly pitching an older man has incredible body-language – so much so that when I replaced their heads with raw meat, the intent and character remained intact. I often struggle for background to put behind images like this, but high-rez currency imagery, with the blown up intaglio, crushes it.
https://pluralistic.net/2023/10/04/dont-let-your-meat-loaf/#meaty-beaty-big-and-bouncy
Tumblr media
I transposed Photoshop instructions for turning a face into a zombie into Gimp instructions to make Zombie Uncle Sam. The guy looking at his watch kills me. He's from an old magazine illustration about radio broadcasting. What a face!
https://pluralistic.net/2023/10/18/the-people-no/#tell-ya-what-i-want-what-i-really-really-want
Tumblr media
The mansplaining guy from the TWA ad is back, but this time he's telling a whopper. It took so much work to give him that Pinnocchio nose. Clearly, he's lying about capitalism, hence the Atlas Shrugged cover. Bosch's "Garden of Earthly Delights" makes for an excellent, public domain hellscape fit for a nonconensual pitch about the miracle of capitalism.
https://pluralistic.net/2023/10/27/six-sells/#youre-holding-it-wrong
Tumblr media
There's no better image for stories about techbros scamming rubes than Bosch's 'The Conjurer.' Throw in Jeff Bezos's head and an Amazon logo and you're off to the races. I boobytrapped this image by adding as many fingers as I could fit onto each of these figures in the hopes that someone could falsely accuse me of AI-generating this. No one did.
https://pluralistic.net/2023/11/06/attention-rents/#consumer-welfare-queens
Tumblr media
Once again, it's Bosch to the rescue. Slap a different smiley-face emoji on each of the tormented figures in 'Garden of Earthly Delights' and you've got a perfect metaphor for the 'brand safety' problem of hard news dying online because brands don't want to be associated with unpleasant things, and the news is very unpleasant indeed.
https://pluralistic.net/2023/11/11/ad-jacency/#brand-safety
Tumblr media
I really struggle to come up with images for my linkdump posts. I'm running out of ways to illustrate assortments and varieties. I got to noodling with a Kellogg's mini-cereal variety pack and I realized it was the perfect place for a vicious gorilla image I'd just found online in a WWI propaganda poster headed 'Destroy This Mad Brute.' I put so many fake AI tells in this one – extra pupils, extra fingers, a super-AI-esque Kellogg's logo.
https://pluralistic.net/2023/11/05/variegated/#nein
Tumblr media
Bloodletting is the perfect metaphor for using rate-hikes to fight inflation. A vintage image of the Treasury, spattered with blood, makes a great backdrop. For the foreground, a medieval woodcut of bloodletting quacks – give one the head of Larry Summers, the other, Jerome Powell. For the patient, use Uncle Sam's head.
https://pluralistic.net/2023/11/20/bloodletting/#inflated-ego
Tumblr media
I killed a long videoconference call slicing up an old pulp cover showing a killer robot zapping a couple of shrunken people in bell-jars. It was the ideal image to illustrate Big Tech's enshittification, especially when it was decorated with some classic tech slogans.
https://pluralistic.net/2023/11/22/who-wins-the-argument/#corporations-are-people-my-friend
Tumblr media
There's something meditative about manually cutting out Tenniel engravings from Alice – the Jabberwock was insane. But it was worth it for this Tron-inflected illustration using a distorted Cartesian grid to display the enormous difference between e/acc and AI doomers, and everyone else in the world.

So, Kellogg's Boycott. Again. Haven't seen any posts about it here yet, so figured I'd make one.
In short: We're all tired of these big companies gouging their prices just because they can, and calling it 'inflation.' We're tired of companies announcing record profits while they cut bonuses/lay people off/force workers to run on skeleton crews/etc. We're tired of "Shrinkflation" And we're tired of a bunch of other shit too, but you get my point.
So, vote with your wallet.
On April 1st, stop buying Kellogg's, and keep that up until June 30th. Just three months- just one quarter of the fiscal year. Companies report earnings each quarter, and if their earnings drop it will reflect in these quarterly reports.
Why Kellogg's?
Because their CEO recently pulled a "Let them eat cake." TLDR; Kellogg's has raised prices by 28% across the board, bragged about record breaking profits, and then suggested that families struggling to afford groceries, because of aforementioned price gouging, just "eat cereal for dinner!"
And well, that message was not well received by anyone, as one could imagine. Pissed a lot of people off.
So yeah. The plan is to stop buying any Kellogg's products (below) for the entirety of the second quarter (April 1st-June 30th) and to collectively tell Kellogg to fuck off until they lower their prices. The goal isn't to "destroy the company" or cost anyone their jobs- but we will hit them where they will listen. Their profits.
If they don't listen, then we don't come back, and we start in on the next company, and keep going until they all get the message. There's always alternatives (more on that below) and we don't need them. If they refuse to drop their prices, then we just stick with the alternatives we found.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Three months is a minor inconvenience to teach a corporation a lesson, and we can do it.
So, take this month before April to find your alternatives. If you need help, I based a non-comprehensive list (below) off the image above. There's tons more just a google search away, and I bet others have made lists as well. There's also always the option to make your own. There's tons of recipes online showing how to make dupes of your favorite products.
Tumblr media
Some things to note:
Don't go stocking up on your favorite Kellogg's products the last week of March and think you're not crossing the picket line. The point is to make Kellogg's feel the loss in profits, and stocking up on Cheez-its beforehand will defeat the purpose. I sincerely promise you can make it three months without buying Kellogg's. Again, three months is a minor inconvenience to teach a corporation a lesson, and we can do it.
That said, Safe Foods are acknowledged. If you or your child is neurodivergent and has issues with food (i.e: literally won't be won't be able to eat at all without their safe food) you get a pass. By all means feel free to try and find alternatives, but it's very unlikely that the few who can't boycott will cause it to fail. There should be plenty of the rest of us to pick up the slack.
Don't be a bystander- meaning don't go about this thinking "Oh, well surely there's enough people boycotting that it's fine if I just-" No. If we ever want things to change then we need to be strong enough to do even something as small as not buying something we like for three months. Furthermore, it's on those of us who can afford Kellogg's products to boycott Kellogg's. It's not the responsibility of those who already can't afford Eggos to boycott Eggos. Nothing will change if you go about just assuming everyone else already has it handled for you. Take a stand.
And importantly, Spread the word. This only works if we let as many people as possible know about it.
So reblog this post, or make your own post, or both. Even feel free to copy and paste this entire post off-platform if you need to. I've also seen some suggest making flyers, or even just writing on post-it notes, and sticking them to Kellogg's products in the store to spread the word off-line.
Just get the word out there. If we ever want these companies to stop gouging us for every cent we've earned, then we have to make a stand somewhere.
If we do nothing it will only ever get worse.

Putting together that list for the death of Superman introduced me to something I'd never heard of before, and now I need to do a write-up about it because it's just so 90s it makes me smile.
Picture this: it's 1993. Over in Japan, Sailor Moon has spent a little over a year rocketing up the charts as a full blown cultural phenomenon that won't slow down any time soon, and western companies want in. Only one company's going to score the license, however, and their first attempt at a localized adaptation (not a dub) was still a year away.
So what's everyone else to do? Make their own pretty fighting princess cartoons to merchandise, of course. And Mattel's first plan was to rope in DC Comics, since they already had the perfect superhero princess on hand.
Not Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld -- who, honestly, would've been an amazing fit for this in retrospect -- no no. Their plan: turn Wonder Woman into Sailor Moon.
Thus: Wonder Woman and the Star Riders.
Tumblr media
I love how you can tell those designs were made for dolls because, just like the original She-Ra, they're about 50% hair.
Two of the other characters in this line-up are also adaptations of DC superheroines: Ice (in white/pink) and Dolphin (in blue) respectively. The other two characters, Solara (in yellow) and Star Lily (the token Black) were created for the series, though apparently Star Lily would go on to inspire a kid from the WW Rebirth comics named Star Blossom, so that's cute.
There was supposed to be a line of toys and a cartoon for this franchise, but the only thing that was ever completed was this one little 14-page comic released through a cross-promotion with Kellogg's Cinnamon Mini Buns cereal.
NGL, I find the silly little thing deeply amusing because it's just. So 90s, and so obviously written to sell toys. Like how it's set mostly in this "magical palace" mostly made up of big open rooms with like, one piece of furniture each (so you can more easily move to dolls around). Or how despite being called "the Star Riders" there's exactly two differently-colored pegasus-unicorns, one pink for Wonder Woman and one white for Dolphin, because they're presumably the most expensive dolls and parents will only be willing to spend so much money.
Tumblr media
The villain, Purrisa, feels like they came at her from the angle of Magical Girl Catwoman. She gets to ride on a flying cowardly panther and wants to steal the heroines' magical macguffin gems because that's what the plot tended to be in these early 90s Sailor Moon rip-offs (including Sabon Moon, come to think of it).
Tumblr media
It's interesting to see this rough approximation of early 90s girly comic art try to replicate the signature sparkles & laser beams style fighting of a magic girl battle show though.
Tumblr media
And of course they give Diana a magic wand with a star on it. At least, I think that's what that is? The bottom kinda looks like an umbrella. Maybe she's supposed to be throwing something.
Tumblr media
She still has the lasso. I mostly want to share this page because it's the best shots we get of Sailor Diana with the massive cape and even more massive hair. Not to mention the pink bracelets and Star Sapphire belt.
NGL, I kinda wish they would've made that doll.
Tumblr media
So yeah, that's Wonder Woman and the Star Riders: goofy, fluffy, never got off the ground, with its toy designs mostly repurposed into something called Tenko and the Guardians of Magic. But still I think a very entertaining little time capsule.

Let's talk about Toys in Cereal
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is a part of several posts of mine that have gotten big, but I figure it's best to address the phenomenon itself in a new post.
If you want to just browse a ton of cool old cereal toys once we're done, go to: www.cratercritters.com. It's a neat site.
Cereal toys are a long-standing American tradition. Some tag-questions asked if they went away because of greed or because of regulations, and that's complicated.
There are food regulations that complicate things. You may have heard that Kinder Eggs are not legal in the US.
Tumblr media
This is usually framed as a "fear the stupid American Kids will eat the toy" kind of thing. This is not the case.
The actual regulation that blocks the Kinder Egg is about food safety from bacterial and undisclosed allergen contamination. Inserting a baggie with a toy into that exposes everything in the cereal bag to the outside of the toy package, and that's a no-no in the US market. The rare thing we're more strict about than the EU.
But that doesn't affect cereal toys, because they can get around it by having it in a separate package outside the food bag, between the inner back and the cardboard box. Much easier on the parents to find when you open the box, too.
Kinder has, themselves, addressed the US Kinder Egg problem the same way, with the Kinder Joy.
Tumblr media
Splitting the package. into two sections that are individually sealed.
But a big blow to the practice was the end of the Australian R&L Toy Company.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
R&L made tons of simple pack-in Premium toys from the 60s through the 80s. They were the primary supplier to Kelloggs, and made everything from simple one-piece figurines to little build-yourself-action-toys.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For instance, these "Wacky Walkers" worked by tying a string to the figure and the weight, then dropping the weight off a table. The figures would hobble forward on their feet, pulled by the weight. Neat-o!
Tumblr media
Then there's stuff like these Toolybirds. I'd sell any one of you to the goblin king for a set of these, because I sure can't afford them at $25 apiece or more. I'll probably just make some dinosaur-knockoff version or somesuch to 3d print, eventually.
R&L went out of business in the 80s and its molds were sold to a toy manufacturing company in Mexico that produced their stuff as bag toys for awhile, before everything just faded away.
Meanwhile, the cereal market was forced to contract elsewhere without a devoted company doing essentially just that.
Tumblr media
Liscenses came to the rescue. Fun fact, if you wanted toys from most of the Disney Afternoon, your only hope was Kellogg's.
As time went on, you started even getting software in cereal.
Tumblr media
Chex gave out a free, PG-version of DOOM for free. Not a couple of demo levels, a whole game, run on the doom engine, with aliens you zap with a spoon.
But as time went on, companies got less and less into the idea of enticing with freebies, and parents started objecting to the marketing of sugar cereals with toy surprises, because given the opportunity, most parents will blame the company for making something the kid wants for their unwillingness to say "No."
The eternal conflict:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cool thing the kid would enjoy that you might have to put your foot down over because enforcing moderation is a parent's job, verses unobjectionable conformist mush designed to increase your kids' "goodness levels."
I think the banning of cartoon mascots for snacks in certain countries is also ridiculous.
Thing is, any company could bring them back at any time.
Tumblr media
The Monster cereals did figurines of their mascots in cosplay in 2021. Of course, they did it as a limited edition bullshit thing where the actual monster cereal mascots were chase figures, but they made them, they could do them at any time if they wanted to.
They could bring the magic back. Nothing is stopping them.
Tumblr media
'cept there's no room for joy on the spreadsheet.
Gotta hit you with a little ennui. It's that ambergris stink that makes the perfume truly sweet.

No because TRAs really painted themselves into a corner when it comes to anticapitalism. Like now they HAVE to defend Kellogg’s and call the boycott of this massive oligarch company that quite literally does own half the grocery store (capitalist dystopia, anyone?) “transphobia”. Yes yes you’re such a communist, you’ve even got the hammer and sickle in your twitter handle! Now eat your frosted flakes and thank daddy Kellogg for saying Trans Rights

my boy only breaks his favourite toys — lewis hamilton x nico rosberg (full work)
chapter 2 - video games
Tumblr media
tags: first kiss, childhood memories
summary: memories follow lewis and nico’s first kiss
Playing video games while munching Kellogg’s Frosties was definitely their favourite activity. Besides racing, of course.
Lewis jumped on the bed on his feet, throwing his hands in the air. The joystick rolled on the carpet. “And the champion is… HAMILTON!!”
“Wait until I get my revenge.” Replied Nico with a smirk. “And stop jumping on my bed.” He pulled his friend by his shirt and put him back to sit.
“Whatever the princess says.” Joked Lewis. “But no revenge this time. It’s past dinner time and I’m hungry.” He got up from the bed. “Should we order some pizza?”
“Are you escaping confrontation?” Nico laughed. “Anyway, I’d prefer burgers tonight.”
“Of course, your highness.” Nico threw him a slipper. “Hey!” Lewis jumped again on the bed, ready to wrestle. He never had a friend like Nico. Most of the boys he met during karting days didn’t want to talk to him, so that made him introverted and afraid of others’ judgment. But with Nico, everything was easier. He didn’t had to make any effort to please him or try hard to be liked to be in his company. Their personalities matched perfectly, they had so much fun together and quickly that friendship became very dear to them.
“You know I’m stronger so you better surrender.” Threatened Lewis, though he was struggling to prevail. Everything was a competition to them.
“Never.” Nico tried to sneak some tickles here and there and Lewis couldn’t stop laughing. “That’s unfair!”
In a flowing move, the german boy pinned his wrists on the bed and held his agitating legs with his knees. Lewis was now looking at a stunning pair of blue eyes framed by blond locks. He couldn’t help but flush. “That is also unfair.”
The smirk was back on Nico’s face. “Say you surrender and I’ll let you go.”
“I won’t.”
“Then I guess we’ll stay like this forever.” Nico’s eyes shifted on his mouth, then back on his eyes. Lewis felt butterflies in his stomach. The blond lowered and pressed his lips against his.
Lewis ever only kissed girls before. He even talked about it with Nico. They talked about the first time they had sex too. By feeling his body so close, his lower belly was beginning to burn.
Lewis broke free from Nico’s grip, forcing them to stood sit again. “What the hell are you doing?”
The other had an ashamed expression on his face that Lewis interpreted as regret. “I— I’m sorry. I thought you wanted it too.” He gazed downwards and hugged himself in unconscious self reassurance. “Please forget it.”
Lewis felt instantly bad and wanted to make up for it. He crawled back in front of him and took his face in his hands. He kissed him passionately.
It definitely wasn’t like kissing a girl, and not only because of the confusing feelings he was trying to understand.
Nico placed his hands on his sides and pushed him back on the bed. Yet this time his knee wasn’t holding him still, it was instead slowly lifting up between Lewis’ legs. That almost took away his heartbeat.
When they were both out of breath, they were smiling like idiots looking at each other. Nico was biting his own lower lip and Lewis’ cheeks were burning red.
“So… are you still hungry or you think can wait a little more for dinner?” Asked Nico.
“I think I can wait.” He was rather hungry for him.

Nora SoSu ref!! I love her (she has been put through the wringer)
More lore below cut v
Like I said she was an extremely talented criminal defense lawyer. She almost always won the cases she was assigned to, and if she didn’t win, she managed to get her clients sentences dramatically reduced. Closer to her maternity leave, however, she picked up a case where someone was falsely accused of being a communist.
(In universe, Fallout has a LOT of anti-communist/red scare propaganda hence this)
She won the case, but her “credibility” instantly tanked, as no one wanted a “commie” defending them. So she was basically bottlenecked into defending communists or people accused of such. She, being one of the top lawyers, won almost all of them, and sent several companies into bankruptcy after settlements were paid, but this made her nationally hated. Her name was in newspapers often, smearing her name and her skills, which often went hand in hand with racist/bigoted rants from these publications
She “retired” after becoming pregnant with Shaun, both because Nate asked her to, and because it was becoming far too dangerous for her to keep at her practice. So she was a sahm until the Great War, upon which the canon events of FO4 happen
She becomes extremely anxious and depressed after being released, and while she does immediately start looking for Shaun, she also begins to look for things that distract her as well, eventually resulting in her appointment to the Minutemen’s General as well as becoming a Railroad member. As stated she does NOT like the Brotherhood, and they make her anxious with their similarities to the American Army (she also doesn’t particularly like Danse, not through any fault of his own, just that he reminds her too much of Nate).
She does find Kellogg and. Punches him to death. It’s cathartic for her, in a way.
I don’t have a solid grasp on what happens after that, but I do know that she chooses to evacuate + blow up the Institute, and that she tries to bring Father with her, but he tells her to take Synth Shaun in his place. SShaun is also a fun concept to play w/ I do have some lore for him
I will say she is friend with Nick, one because they’re both pre-war (on technicality), and two because they actually both knew of each other. Nora often defended people Nick arrested, so they’d see each other on court, and because they were both in the paper often (Nora for the Commie’s Lawyer thing, Nick for the Eddie Winter’s case). They’re. Super shocked and a little disturbed to see the other after meeting again” but they do become decent friends once they get over their heebies :3

Australia's Major Supermarket Chains Accused of Misleading Discount Claims
Australia's two largest supermarket chains, Coles and Woolworths, are being sued by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) for allegedly deceiving consumers with false price reduction claims. The ACCC asserts that both companies violated consumer law by temporarily increasing prices before dropping them to levels that were often equal to or even higher than the original price, while claiming the discounts were permanent.
Tumblr media
Coles has vowed to defend itself in court, while Woolworths is reviewing the allegations. Combined, the two chains control roughly two-thirds of the Australian grocery market. Over the past year, both retailers have faced heightened scrutiny amid accusations of price gouging and anti-competitive behavior.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese weighed in on the matter, calling the alleged actions "completely unacceptable" if proven true. He emphasized that such behavior undermines trust and is not in line with Australian values. "Customers deserve to be treated fairly, not as fools," Albanese said at a press conference where he also introduced draft legislation for a supermarket "code of conduct."
ACCC Chair Gina Cass-Gottlieb explained that Coles and Woolworths have long used marketing campaigns like 'Prices Dropped' and 'Down Down' to suggest permanent reductions in prices. However, the watchdog's investigation revealed that many of these discounts were misleading, affecting hundreds of products over a span of several months. Woolworths allegedly misled customers about 266 products over 20 months, while Coles did so for 245 products over 15 months.
The products involved in the allegations span a wide range, including pet food, Band-Aid bandages, mouthwash, and iconic Australian favorites like Arnott's Tim Tam biscuits, Bega Cheese, and Kellogg's cereal. According to the ACCC, the two supermarkets sold millions of these items, generating substantial revenue through the deceptive pricing practices.
Ms. Cass-Gottlieb emphasized the importance of accurate pricing during times of economic pressure, noting that many Australians depend on discounts to manage their grocery bills. "It’s vital that consumers can trust that discounts are real, especially with the rising cost of living," she said.
The ACCC is asking the Federal Court of Australia to impose substantial fines on Coles and Woolworths, as well as an order that they expand their charitable meal delivery programs.
In a statement, Coles acknowledged that rising costs have impacted product prices, but stressed that the company aims to balance those increases with providing value to customers. Coles also underscored its commitment to consumer law and building trust with all stakeholders. Woolworths echoed similar sentiments, stating that it is willing to engage with the ACCC and that it remains focused on delivering meaningful value to shoppers.
In response to the growing concerns, the Australian government has launched a review of the country's Food and Grocery Code of Conduct. The review recommended strengthening the code and giving the ACCC greater powers to enforce compliance. The proposed new code aims to protect suppliers and consumers alike, with harsh penalties for companies that breach its standards.
As the legal battle unfolds, the case highlights the increasing pressure on Australia’s supermarket sector to operate transparently and fairly in an era of rising living costs.
