Walmart, Costco to Stop Requiring Masks for Vaccinated Workers and Shoppers
American companies began to rethink their requirements for face masks after federal health regulators relaxed their guidelines this week, and on Friday Walmart Inc. WMT 0.93% made the first big move to bend to the new view.
The U.S.’s largest private employer said it would no longer require vaccinated workers and shoppers to wear masks in stores and warehouses outside of municipalities that require it. Walmart’s new policy for its 1.6 million U.S. workers goes into effect May 18, the company said, while vaccinated customers could shop maskless immediately.
That made the country’s largest retailer by revenue an early mover in response to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s new guidance. Costco Wholesale Corp. COST 1.29% made a similar shift. Executives in sectors ranging from autos to grocers said they were still wrestling with how to respond to the new guidelines, which they note conflicts in many cases with state, local and other protocols specific to certain industries.

Car makers General Motors Co. and Toyota Motor Corp. said they are sticking with existing policies while awaiting guidance from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, which has jurisdiction over their workplaces and still requires face coverings and social distancing. The agency didn’t immediately update its guidance based on the CDC announcement. OSHA representatives didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.
Some national retailers said they were reviewing the CDC’s changes. Kroger Co. , the nation’s biggest supermarket chain, said it would continue requiring masks and encouraging social distancing. The company said it is asking employees for feedback as it reviews safety practices and the latest CDC guidance.
Another grocer, Trader Joe’s, said it would drop its mask requirements for vaccinated customers. “We encourage customers to follow the guidance of health officials,” the company posted on Twitter. It won’t require proof of vaccination for those who forgo masks, a spokesperson said.
The CDC said Thursday that fully vaccinated people don’t need to wear a mask or physically distance during outdoor or indoor activities, large or small, in most settings. The agency said it made the revisions based on the latest science indicating that being fully vaccinated cuts the risk of getting infected and spreading the virus to others, in addition to preventing severe disease and death.
The Retail Industry Leaders Association, a trade group, said the CDC’s mask announcement creates ambiguity since it doesn’t align with state and local orders. The group asked customers who decline to wear masks to shop online or use curbside pickup services.
“Retailers will continue to prioritize the safety of their team members first, as they’ve done throughout the pandemic,” said Lisa LaBruno, a senior vice president at the group. “We urge all retail customers and guests to follow a store’s safety protocols including wearing a mask and social distancing.”

Erik Nordstrom, chief executive of Nordstrom Inc., one of the largest department-store chains in the U.S., said in an interview Thursday that Nordstrom’s stores would continue to follow CDC guidance on masking, but that the company was in no rush to change its mask requirement for both employees and customers. The retailer’s priority, he said, is helping both customers and employees feel safe.
“Up until the last month or two, pretty much every jurisdiction has had a mask mandate, too,” Mr. Nordstrom said in the interview, which was part of The Wall Street Journal’s Future of Everything Festival. “We’ve stayed with requiring masks for our employees and customers. And we’ll follow the CDC. So, when they indicate that that’s not necessarily the thing to do, we’ll follow suit.”
At Walmart, to go maskless, workers have to say they are vaccinated during the health screenings each worker takes to start a shift, the company said. The retailer continues to review whether masks should be worn for certain jobs, said a companywide email Friday, and workers can continue to wear masks if they want to.
Walmart won’t ask shoppers to offer proof that they have been vaccinated, instead relying on customers’ word, a spokesman said.
At Costco, vaccinated shoppers and workers will no longer need to wear masks, though it recommends employees continue to do so, said Chief Financial Officer Richard Galanti Friday. Workers will need to sign a “mask opt out” form verifying they are vaccinated, he said, while it won’t verify whether shoppers are vaccinated.
The relaxed mandate could allow bigger crowds to gather. Walt Disney Co. Chief Executive Bob Chapek said he expects to see an immediate increase in the number of people allowed inside domestic theme parks following the CDC move. “Today’s guidance,” he said Thursday, “is very big news for us, particularly if anyone has been in Florida in the middle of summer with a mask on.”
Food makers Conagra Brands Inc., General Mills Inc. and Kellogg Co. said they are continuing to require masks and social distancing at their factories even as employees get vaccinated, as food manufacturers have to follow a range of industry-specific regulations.
The Consumer Brands Association, a trade group for food and other grocery manufacturers, said it has asked the CDC for more details on how its latest mask guidance affects businesses such as factories.
Betsy Booren, senior vice president of regulatory affairs for the group, said that the revised guidance seemed directed mainly at consumers in their daily lives but that food factories, where workers are often crowded together and can’t always distance, present different circumstances. Ms. Booren said that while she is encouraged by the latest CDC guidance and what it might mean for returning to normal, she hesitates to advise manufacturers to change their practices.
Restaurants face complicated decisions in part because they have employees and customers who could be unvaccinated, and operators can’t easily distinguish who has been inoculated and who hasn’t. Many also face state and local regulations that require mask-wearing on their premises.
While restaurants want to return to normal so they can get more business, they also want diners to feel safe enough to return, said the National Restaurant Association, which has decided not to update its masking guidance immediately.
Larry Lynch, senior vice president of science and industry for the association, said he is “encouraged by the CDC’s decision and the potential it has to help move the restaurant industry closer to being fully reopened.”
Paul Mangiamele, chief executive of Legendary Brands LLC, a Dallas company whose franchisees include roughly 80 Bennigan’s pubs and Steak and Ale restaurants in the U.S., said he expects most of his franchisees to remove masking restrictions in the coming days. But the company will let individual restaurants decide how to verify vaccination status. He expects most restaurants to make masking optional for employees and to benefit from a flood of pent-up demand.
“We want to react immediately to the guidance that’s provided, but do that with common sense and safety,” Mr. Mangiamele said.

In Philadelphia, McGillan’s Olde Ale House, a 150-year-old Irish pub near the city’s downtown, is operating at 50% capacity and requiring masks and social distancing for all patrons and employees, except while eating and drinking. Owner Chris Mullins is waiting for the city’s guidance before lifting the pub’s mask requirement. Local health officials have said they hope to remove all capacity and distancing precautions by June 11.
“Everyone’s excited, and they want the extra money and the increased business,” Mr. Mullins said. “But the potential for every night being New Year’s Eve, with five deep at the bar and people screaming in your face for a beer, is still a little jarring to some of my employees, too.”
Small businesses aren’t certain how to respond to the CDC’s new mask guidance, especially when it conflicts with OSHA’s and other guidelines, said Kevin Kuhlman, head of government relations for the National Federation of Independent Businesses, a trade group representing 300,000 mostly small, private companies.
Many small businesses hope state and local governments endorse the CDC’s view on masks soon. Meanwhile, were OSHA to issue any new emergency guidelines that conflict with the CDC’s advice, “that would really confuse small businesses,” Mr. Kuhlman said. “Our biggest fear is getting something brand new from OSHA that’s even more restrictive.”
Dropping mask requirements—along with widespread vaccine availability and falling case rates—would help bring more white-collar workers back to offices, said Kenneth Caplan, global co-head of real estate at Blackstone Group Inc. As an owner of office space, he said he has noticed more talk of businesses bringing employees back.
“It’s another positive step, but it’s part of a continuum of a lot of steps toward reopening,” Mr. Caplan said.

This could be a trick, but one “friendly” mutant was better than the rest. “Why’d you save me...you...you Hulk?” “Mac Beth says Milk of Human Kindness makes Strong strong. Strong is strong with kindness.” “Whatever keeps you straight... or...however mutants swing.” “We swing right to left with hammer.” As the awkward silence ensued, it got dark. Dark enough for Cait to sneak back to Tommy’s. “Hey big guy, the sun’s getting low. Can I go now?” “Brothers leaving, you leave too. Dark keep you safe. Strong keep you secret.” “Thanks.” “What the fuck was that?” Cait thought for the next week. It was game night at the Combat Zone, Cait had beaten all the challengers that had come to challenge her on the hopes of taking her title and a hefty payday; wannabes like Iron Fist, Killbane...hell this guy called Electricutioner came in with power fists hooked up to batteries and Cait knocked him out on the first swing. “Now it’s time for the main event!” announced Tommy. The door of the opponent began to open and Cait readied her bat. “I give you! Your Incredible...” RAAAAAAAAHHHHHH The same Super Mutant that saved Cait last week tore through the door and gave her a pleasant surprise. “YES!” This silenced the entire Combat Zone. “WE KNOW EACH OTHER! HE’S A FRIEND FROM ‘WORK’!” A friend who grabbed her by the neck and pinned her to the wall. “Oh come on" Cait croaked. Then the Hulk leaned in to whisper, "Stay low, brothers taking this place. Blue Lord wants you in their army." Codsworth: If anyone can find young Shaun, it was this Mr. Handy’s master. Well, he may become everyone’s master now that they have an army of... ewww... Super Mutants. Not to mention the occasional deathclaws and mirelurk queens they tame to ride into battle. They claim that this was all dedicated to finding Shaun. As much as Codsworth would like to believe them, this army... that ring... it’s a conquest. No. An invasion. Who in the right mind would feel safe with Super Mutants patrolling the roads and mounting heads on towers? This was something Codsworth couldn’t be apart of; something that made him defy his designated directive. With a heavy metal heart, he resigned. “Mum/Sir, I quit.” Curie: Upon being discovered by the residents of Vault 81, Curie was rejuvinated by new opportunity: to explore the Commonwealth and its vast secrets, societies, and species. The last part was an exciting anticipation... which became something to fear. Not only was the Commonwealth full of monsters like Deathclaws, Curie could never have predicted the imposing threat organized Super Mutants could pose. After attempting to observe in secret (which nearly led to her being torn apart) Curie felt she needed a new advantage; a human advantage. This inspiration came when she saw that the blue uniformed Super Mutants were led by a human. Their “Blue Lord.” Maybe if she experienced being human, she could understand how one person could dominate over a savage species. Curie would need to find someone who could make her human. Only then would she be able to begin to understand this “Blue Lord.” Danse: Cambridge was under siege by feral ghouls. Normally Danse would be able to handle mere ferals thanks to his power armor. However these ferals were not only overwhelming in numbers, but also organized? They came in through the alley ways, sewers, and chokepoints; making it difficult to focus fire. Ferals couldn’t have done this... They were positioned by someone! And that someone just pulled his fusion core. Danse was left a statue amongst the midst of ghouls, who halted at the command of “A Vault Dweller?” “QUIET FOR THE BLUE LORD!” A super mutanr roared as they dragged Haylen and Rhys out of the police station. The Paladin and his squad were shocked that their outpost was compromised by a single Vault Dweller; A Vault Dweller who had super mutants and ferals at their disposal. “So. How does the Brotherhood of Steel feel about being beaten by my Army of the Dead?” Deacon: “OH FUCK ME RIGHT IN THE ASSHOLE” is what Deacon would say if something threw off his wig. It’s also exactly what he said when Super Mutants raided Railroad HQ. Their organization and new blue war paint aren’t the only things that surprised him; what really made him take off his shades was the fact that a human, who was a freaking Vault Dweller leading them all. That explains the blue. Then a lightbulb flipped on. “If they were human, than they could be bargained with.” Deacon put on his smarmy grin and tried to convince the “Blue Lord” into a deal that would ensure he and the Railroad would walk away from this, maybe with some new friends. Big, green friends. “Listen here you little RATBAG, I’ve got enough spies in my army.” “But not human spies. Wanna hear what’s going on in Diamond City or Goodneighbor, I’m your guy! Wanna sneak some stuff throughout the Commonwealth, the Railroad’s your go to movers. Need to clear out a place you don’t want Super Mutants to destroy, we’ll send Glory; she’ll leave the foundations intact.” It would be nice to know what’s going on amongst the humans. Also it could lead to Shaun. “Ok, RATBAG. Deal. You can keep doing what you’re doing at my camps and under my supervision, so long as you feed me info. Doublecross me and I’ll feed you to my deathclaw.” “IS IT CALLED “FLUFFY?” “Their name is Smaug.” Dogmeat: Not much can make you care after you see your spouse get murdered and you child kidnapped. But you can still feel a sliver of something with a dog. It was unforeseen that the Blue Lord, leader of a super mutant army would adopt a dog. It took a while for Sole to convince their right hand, Strong that Dogmeat isn’t food. Eventually they would spot Strong feeding Dogmeat, petting him, or playing with him. He wouldn’t lay a finger on the dog if it meant hurting him. Then one day, the Blue Lord called out for their pup. “Dogmeat!” Strong came in bearing very unlikely and unfortunate news. “Oh dog is dead. Strong stomped on him while playing. Feel guilty. Carried him all day.” Just then Dogmeat sprang to life, relieving the Blue Lord and Strong. “Dog, you’re alive!” Facepalming, Sole gave Strong a stern warning: “If you actually kill Dogmeat, or even put him in harms way, I will mindfuck you like I did Bruz.” “What is fuck? How do you mind fuck?” Gage: Taking over a soda themed amusement park seems like a sound idea compared to taking over said soda themed amusement park with super mutants, deathclaws, feral ghouls, and gatorclaws. What’s even crazier was how only one person, who was a nobody Vault Dweller, have all these monsters under their thumb. All Gage knew, was that he wanted to be on the winning side when Nuka World’s rivers of Quantum, ran purple with the blood of the Disciples, Pack, Operators, and anyone else who squared up to this Blue Lord. So after Colter and his defences fell, Gage approached the Vaultie at the slim chance that they won’t sick a gatorclaw at him. Hancock: People in high places like MacDonough, the asshats who ended the world 200 years ago, and even himself are the ones Hancock despises the most in this world. The only person who could top this was the “Blue Lord.” At first he was impressed that they could lead an army of super mutants and not be eaten alive. He was more so uplifted when he heard that they were taking out the raiders and gunners. This streak of good impressions was derailed when he actually came face to face with their soldiers. If a mutie wasn’t loyal, they were broken and enslaved. Slavery of any kind doesn’t fly with Hancock, even of super mutants. Sure a majority of the time mutants are seen as a threat, but there are those who are civil and have even stayed in Goodneighbor. So he made it clear that the Blue Lord had no place in Goodneighbor, unbeknowest to him: making the town a target. Kellogg: “There was no way a Vault Dweller could survive the Commonwealth.” That’s what Kellogg thought until Fort Hagen was raided by super mutants, mirelurks, ferals, and a deathclaw. All under the control of the Vault Dweller. Normally he would have synths to back him up. But they turned on him, bringing him to his knees so that the Vault Dweller could get their cold and unforgiving hands on him. “WHERE IS SHAUN?!” Whatever they were doing to him, Kellogg’s entire life flashed before his eyes; all up until the last time he saw Shaun. Upon being released, Kellogg’s cybernetics all burst; leaving him brain dead; defenseless and unresponsive. He was a meal laid out for the Vault Dweller’s mutants, and all he could do is watch as the mutants and ferals ate away at him. Feeling every bite and tear, unable to scream. Longfellow: When a Vault Dweller comes to Far Harbor saying they wanna see the local fauna, makes you double take. The caps were good, so Longfellow took them around his hunting spots. But they weren’t there for skin. They were there for the animals and monsters. Anglers, gulpers, and fog ghouls came to do their bidding. “Did I drink some bad pisswater?” The Vault Dweller taming Far Harbor’s most dangerous creatures didn’t make Longfellow reach for his gun, since he really didn’t need to do any killing. Until they took Erikson’s dogs and brainwashed him into becoming their dog as well. “I don’t know who the hell you are, but I know that of all the things that crawl all over this island, you’re the most beastly of them all. ‘Cap’n.’” “That’s Blue Lord to you, old man.” MacCready: Gunners turning up dead. Nice. Super Mutants coming together. Not nice. Super mutants painting themselves blue. Weird. What was even weirder to MacCready was hearing about a Vault Dweller calling themselves the Blue Lord strut around the Commonwealth with and army of super mutants painted blue. It was like somthing out of an Unstoppables Comic. Kinda like that one story where that green monster guy got sent to another planet. As if the story couldn’t get any weirder, the Blue Lord just walked into the Third Rail. Maxson: After hearing about the fall of the Cambridge outpost, Maxson knew it was time to bring the calavary to the Commonwealth. What he didn’t know about was the army of blue clad super mutants waiting for him. His scouts reported a Vault Dweller called “The Blue Lord” commanding super mutants against raiders and helping them take down Vertibirds. “Time for the big guns.” It was time to FORM VOLTRO- no. We’re not doing that (yet). It was time to bring in Liberty Prime. What would have tipped the scale in favor of the Brotherhood, became the Blue Lord’s new toy. Maxson watched as the Vault Dweller commanded Prime to its knees, mount its shoulder, and command it to “OPEN FIRE!” at the Prydwyn. Nick: Getting kidnapped by Skinny Malone was a breeze compared to being stuck in his vault while it’s being raided by super mutants. What made Valentine choke on his cigarette smoke was that they were being swayed by a Vault Dweller. He got the pleasure of meeting them eye to eye when they arrived at the Overseer office. “Want a job?” they offered. “No thanks, I’m currently employed.” “Well let me make an offer you can’t refuse.” They commanded a mutant to punch trough the class and tear Valentine out from his former prison. The Vault Dweller then dug their hands into his face. All Nick could think of was who the hell was this person? What are they doing? Is this the end- SKKKKKKKKKKRRRRRRRRRRAT What can I do for them? How can I help them? “YOU ARE MINE.” They finalized as they let go. “Glad to be on the force.” Piper: This Lois Lane had only heard of the first Super Mutant attack on Diamond City and how the Minutemen had saved them. Now there aren’t any more Minutemen, but there sure are plenty of super mutants. Which was evident when there are like 10 behemoths knocking at the gates. Powerless against such a force, the citizens of Diamond City cowered and waited for the end. The end sounded like a hoard of mutants clashing. Piper held Nat and shut her eyes. The sound of “RUN AWAY!” made her pop up to see what had transpired. What a sight: the super mutants were hightailing out of there. What appeared to be their saviors, was more mutants? What engaged her into investigation mode was the blue war paint and the Vault Dweller leading standing among them. “THIS CITY NOW STANDS FOR THE BLUE LORD!” Preston: The definition of desperate would probably be asking a Vault Dweller leading an army of Super Mutants to reform the Minutemen. Preston was so desperate to keep his people safe and bring back the Minutemen. So what better way to not get eaten by super mutants and get a new general than allying with Sole? Although they preferred to be called Blue Lord, they had the numbers and a power unlike anything he had seen. The way they commanded even deathclaws made Mama Murphy consider going clean. What really made Preston shake was how they easily retook The Castle from the Mirelurks and slay an Mirelurk Queen. Even the way they address their army is scary. “THESE PESTS THAT HAVE ONCE INFESTED OUR NEW FORTRESS HAVE BEEN PUT TO THE SWORD AND ANY WHO OPPOSE US WILL SUFFER THE SAME FATE! NOW YOU HOLD THIS STRONGHOLD FOR THE BLUE LORD!” “and... the Minutemen...?” Preston added weakly. Strong: The anticipated rescue from Trinity Tower was sidelined by a takeover. A single Vault Dweller had made Fist and his followers kneel. This earned Strong’s respect, making him jump at joining this new leader. No brainwashing or shaming required. “Strong will be your shadow now, Blue Lord.” “That’s what Bruz said. Then he doublecrossed me and now he’s a husk. Learn from his mistake.” While the Blue Lord talked, Strong noticed a tasty meal on four legs by his new leader’s side. “Don’t even think about eating Dogmeat.” “But dog meat is meat! Eat meat!” X6-88: The courser had anticipated that the Institute would need to face its enemies; The Brotherhood, Minutemen, and Railroad. Never would he guess that it would be Father’s mother/father and their army of super mutants; the Institute’s own super mutants under the leadership of a once potential ally. While evacuating the scientists, the Gen 2 synths began to malfunction. SKIDIDPOWPOW “Reactivating. New directive: serve the Blue Lord” Then the synth gorillas broke out of containment and began devouring the scientists. Whatever the Blue Lord was using, defied any known science practiced within the Institute and would be it’s utter destruction.

Borah Symposium 2017
Tonight concludes the 70th annual Borah Symposium, @BorahSymposium, here at the University of Idaho. Originally known as the William Edgar Borah Outlawry of War Foundation, it was established at the University of Idaho in 1929 by a grant from Salmon Oliver Levinson, prominent Chicago attorney and prime mover for the Kellogg-Briand Pact, and a man who greatly admired Senator Borah, especially for his great efforts in helping get the pact through the U.S. Senate, and his many other efforts on behalf of peace. The first use made of the income was on September 23 & 24, 1931, when, with Senator Borah in attendance, the foundation was inaugurated. Dr. Manley 0. Hudson, Professor of International Law at Harvard University, delivered a series of four lectures dealing with the development of agencies among the nations of the world for the outlawry of war. Senator Borah also spoke. It was not until 1938 that the foundation again sponsored an address to the university, this time by Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Since 1948 the foundation has underwritten annual conferences concerned with specific facets of the general theme, the causes of war and the conditions for peace. In selecting speakers for the conferences, every effort is made to bring outstanding academicians and national and international authorities in diverse fields to the campus to participate in these deliberations.
The academic year 1959/60 saw a change from the annual conference to a single lecturer who spoke both on the university campus and in selected communities in the state.
This practice, sometimes including several different speakers during the course of the year, lasted until 1967 when the symposium format was introduced. Each symposium is planned by a faculty-student committee which determines each year's topic, with office, meeting space, and administrative support provided by the Martin School of International Studies & Conflict Resolution. Over the years the Borah Foundation has sponsored a variety of educational programs and activities.

Microsoft’s ‘Stranger Things’ Gag Doesn’t Make Sense Because No One Used Windows 1.0
The great irony of Stranger Things, a show that trafficks heavily in both supernatural plotlines and 1980s nostalgia, is that its aggressive reliance on vintage brands for major plot points makes it susceptible to the decay of history, especially when it comes to modern brands.
It’s one thing to collaborate with Coca-Cola on New Coke references or give Kellogg’s ample Eggo namedrops—both companies are American institutions and unless one of them has a Radio Shack-style fall from grace, they won’t be going anywhere anytime soon. (Not dropping spoilers, but a key character during season 2 worked at Radio Shack.)
But Microsoft’s collaboration with Netflix on a 1985 Stranger Things branding exercise doesn’t really make a lot of sense, either for reasons of branding or for reasons of continuity.
The Redmond-based software giant has been making an aggressive push on social media about a Windows 1.0 relaunch in recent days, something it only recently admitted was a Netflix collaboration. From a synergy standpoint, Netflix teaming with the largest company in the world by market capitalization to promote one of its most popular shows sounds like a win.
But Windows 1.11—as the Stranger Things-themed variant of the operating system, essentially an OS-themed game that was released Monday, is called—kind of ignores the fact that Windows 1.0 was a fairly obscure software product in 1985, effectively a very basic graphical shell (see the demo, above) that shares a lineage, but little relation, with Windows 10.
Windows 1.0 wouldn’t have been a popular choice in the home. When it was first released at Comdex in November of 1985, its target market was corporate buyers, not home users. Which means that maybe the sexist pigs who edit The Hawkins Post might have used it, but it wouldn’t have been a popular program due to its limited application support. More popular software tools of the era would have been Lotus 1-2-3, dBASE, or WordStar. (And to be clear, Windows 1.0 doesn’t actually appear in the show this season.)
It was, to be kind, a good start. Back then, Microsoft was not a company that released new products to massive success out of the gate. Word, for example, was something of a flop in its first iteration; it took until the late 1980s, when the app came to the Mac, when it finally it its stride.
Likewise, Windows only became popular in the early 1990s, as Windows 3.0 and 3.1 finally started to break through in a big way.
To put it another way, this collaboration would have made more in Stranger Things season 8, as the gang heads off to college around 1990, discovers the internet, and external governmental forces find a new way to ruin their lives.
But even if Windows 1.0 makes an odd choice for a collaboration, a tech company was a good idea for Netflix’s promotional strategy. The problem is, like many of the brands in the Starcourt Mall, most major computer manufacturers didn’t make it to the present day, and even the ones that did were still in their formative stages.
Intel was barely even “inside”—it had only started branding its processors in 1985 with the release of its 386 processor; Michael Dell was still working out of his dorm room; and IBM, while at the top of the business-computer heap during this era, sold that business off to Lenovo 15 years ago.
In fact, going on the idea that the brands featured in the show sell things that were popular during the time period when the show is set, the natural choice for a promotion like this is a company that hasn’t existed for a quarter century: Commodore, which released the Amiga that year and was atop the sales charts thanks to the long-standing popularity of the Commodore 64.
There are other companies that we could bring up: Atari, a shell of its former self but technically a going concern in 2019, has already inspired Stranger Things marketing; and Nintendo, which test-marketed the Nintendo Entertainment System in late 1985 and is no stranger to retro marketing, might have been a natural choice.
Certainly, one could also make the case for Apple, and the plot of Stranger Things was such that Steve Jobs was still at the company during the time of the events of season 3. But Apple is a company that largely shies away from nostalgia, and doesn’t talk about the Apple II era very often these days, despite the platform’s longstanding popularity in the home and education markets. Those beige cases don’t fit into Apple’s modern product line so well these days—and let’s face it, Apple probably isn’t in the mood to help a competitor market itself.
As a brand marketing exercise, Stranger Things doesn’t work very well for the tech industry—not because people aren’t nostalgic, but because the dynamic of the industry is such that the movers and shakers of 1985 have moved and shaken into obscurity. There’s nothing wrong with that, of course, but it makes Microsoft’s attempt at cultural relevance ring a little untrue.
In a weird way, Netflix’s decision to align with Microsoft on a bit of brand marketing for Stranger Things reflects the company that ultimately won the home PC market—not the one that was winning at the time.
If anything, it’s a reminder that the winners write the history books.

PROJECT BRIEF
INTRODUCTION
This project explores the notion that physical and mechanical ideas and practices are fundamental to the realization of design solutions. Our approach as always is inherently focused on the design and how these particular fields relate to it. We will be exploring the necessary balance between creative/lateral and pragmatic/analytical thinking and the role they both play in effective design.
The saying that “there are many ways to skin a cat” is the founding idea of this project. You are required to experiment with a range of creative and lateral ideas, schemes, plans, beliefs or hypothetical solutions to solve a given mechanical and structural problem You must explore as diverse a range of solutions as conceivable and then refine these into an effective physical and aesthetic design.
Often the importance of the decision ‘which engineering principle to use, to achieve a design outcome’ is underestimated. This can result in a product that either performs poorly or that requires a large amount of material and engineering complexity to achieve its given function. It is also critical to comprehend that a failure of one part, material or process out of many can easily render the total product obsolete with both financial and environmental costs.
For these reasons, basic engineering principals and understanding are critical to the industrial design profession.
The notions of elegance and economy are to be fundamental in your design approach to this project. This requires that the aesthetic and mechanical elements of your design will be heavily inter-related and will influence each other to create a design solution that simultaneously acknowledges and resolves both needs.
Often a creative solution can be developed from the non-typical application of a given theory so don assume that you have to ‘re-design the wheel’ you might be more successful simply using the wheel in a new way.
DESIGN CHALLENGE
You are to design a machine that is capable of holding and moving a given object through a series of precise movements. The object will be a 28mm long office pin that will be supplied to you with this brief.
It can be held at either end. The free end must move in a controlled manner from an origin point to a final resting point. This movement will be exactly 100mm in the horizontal axis x, 20mm in the y axis and 4mm in the vertical z axis.
Your machine must be mounted on a planar material of your choice 150mm x 150mm and this plane should be considered as part of your design composition.
The movement of your pin including the initial force used to start the movement will be provided by a small electrical motor. (Max 6volt) Once the motor has been activated you are not permitted to touch the mechanism or the motor other than switching it off at the end of the cycle. Ideally it would come to rest automatically.
To acknowledge the MDI research stream Smart Interactions, if you wish your design can also incorporate a simple electronic sensor to activate the motion. Consider the sensors carefully as they work in different ways and you need to make sure that you opt for the most appropriate sensor, that is not only sympathetic to the movement you have designed but also enhances the performance as a whole.
N.B. You are required to go beyond simply performing the mechanical task to do it with style, precision, creativity and a clear overall design intention. As part of your final submission you are required to produce a 10 second video of the movement and thus consider the poetic and aesthetic qualities of the movement itself.

PROCEDURE
Explore as many different physical principles as possible. These could include linear or planar structures and engineering systems such as gears, levers, screw threads, chains, pulleys, conveyers, hydraulics or something as simple as silk thread. Consider the aesthetic ramifications and potential of these choices.
To explore and develop your ideas use technical drawings (plans, side and front elevations), force diagrams, 2D card models and 3D prototypes and test rigs. This development process should evolve the design. Each model and drawing should be a development of the previous design. Overlaid technical drawings on draughting film can be an effective technique and starting point for the development of your design. These testing and development methods will give specific feedback to check the difference between imagined and actual performance. Continue to refine your design until you have fully resolved your design in all aspects, considering the efficient use of materials, their visual qualities and the aesthetic qualities of the movement.
Explore the specific engineering qualities of your proposed materials and check this against their required function. This could include stiffness, friction, ability to be worked and general availability. Often a very small change in material selection or a change in tolerance will make a great deal of difference in a products longevity and performance.
In exploring movement, be careful to address the functional principles of connections both in a static origin (a foundation) and in dynamic task connections (the rod).
During this and all projects you should be intensely using the facilities of your design studio space, the technical workshop facilities, and other technologies within and outside of the school. This is critical to develop discussion and debate amongst your colleagues, to allow a productive class dynamic to evolve. E.G. get out of your bedrooms and get other people’s opinions about your designs as you are doing them! Talk to specific experts and collect relevant technical information to substantiate your design selections in material or mechanical principle choices.
Please note that you are required to keep up a blog page for this project. SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS The minimum submission requirements for Project Two are:
1) Full size, or larger, plan and elevations either 1:1, 2:1 or 5:1, these can be manual technical drawings or drawings generated using Fusion 360 or SolidWorks (3 different developed principles). Printed out A3 or larger.
2) Force diagrams and card models (overlaid on your technical drawings).
3) Atleast1fullsizetestrigverifyingthatthemainaspectofyourmechanicalprinciplewillwork.
All of the above will be needed for the Tutorial Design Concepts Reviews on Monday 29th ApriL.

Whether you are moving for work or something else is the reason for moving, this state has everything you need! From agricultural regions and industrial cities to the great lake Michigan that connects Chicago and the rest of the state with the entire world. So, it is clear why people describe Illinois as the microcosm of the United States. There are hills, rivers, farmlands, and forests spread all across the state, providing a wonderful contrast to big cities and colorful towns. Also, this country is blessed with having all four seasons, giving its landscape four distinct looks throughout the year. You can call it Prairie State and the Land of Lincoln, and also, it is very important how you pronounce “Illinois” (it’s IL-ih-NOY)!
Now that we have gotten that out of our way, let’s delve into the matter more deeply. Before you make a checklist for moving to Illinois, here are some basic information about it.
Chicago is the most important city in Illinois
Geography and history of Illinois
The rivers of Mississippi, Ohio, and Wabash form a part of the boundaries of Illinois. The Port connects Chicago and the whole state with international waters through the area of Great Lakes, via the Saint Lawrence Seaway to the Atlantic Ocean. The Illinois River is also a very important waterway further establishing the country’s connectivity. The state’s capital is Springfield, located in the central area of Illinois. Of course, today the main area is the one on the northeast, around Chicago, and it is well as the most populated one.
As far as history is concerned, the French were the ones who first colonized the areas around the Mississippi River, and named the are Illinois country. As the 18th century was ending and after the US gained their independence, settlers started arriving from Kentucky. Illinois become a state in 1818. The city of Chicago was founded during the fourth decade of the 19th century. The construction of the Erie Canal increased commerce and trade across the Great Lakes, which led to Chicago’s founding.
Nature is one the best reasons for moving to Illinois
The United States is blessed with mesmerizing landscapes of all types, and Illinois is no exception. Nature is precious for Illinoisans, which is best seen through the fact that there are over 60 national parks here. There are approximately as much wildlife and recreational areas also. Since its beginnings in 1908, Illinois parks system is among the best-organized systems of this kind in the world.
Chicago is beautiful
There are many notable areas under the protection of the National Park Service. Among these are Shawnee National Forest, the Trail of Tears, American Discovery Trail and Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail. Fort Massac State Park was the first park in the system and is one of the most beautiful ones. Lake Michigan is the only one of Great Lakes that is completely in the USA. It is among the top places to spend a day or two at in the state of Illinois.
The educational system is great
If you are thinking about moving to Illinois, this is probably one of the main questions that may concern you. If you move here, you won’t have to worry about it at all. Your kids will be able to choose among a number of quality educational institutions. There are as much as 49 community colleges across the state, that fully follow the modern academical standards. Some of the best National Universities in the United States are in Illinois according to U.S. News and World Report. Some of these are University of Chicago, Northwestern University, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and Loyola University Chicago. Kellogg School of Management consistently ranks within the top 10 business schools globally.
Transportation infrastructure is very reliable
Airports
There was a period between 1962 and 1998 during which O’Hare International Airport in Chicago was the world’s busiest airport. Ever since, though it never reclaimed the top spot, it is among the top 3 busiest airports at all times. It is a major checkpoint for United Airlines and American Airlines. The second most important airport is the Midway Airport, which was the world leading airport until 1962 when O’Hare supplanted it.
Railway
The railway system is really developed across the USA, and that is even more so the case of moving to Illinois. Transportation network here is very expansive and well-organized. Almost all of the North American railway lines meet at Chicago, which makes it the largest and most active railway hub in the country.
Interstate highway system
Highway interstate system is of the highest quality too. Another reason why Illinois is such an important state is the fact that has the most primary interstates passing through of all 50 states (13 interstates). Most important interstate highways include I-24, I-39, I-41, I-55, I-57, I-64, I-70, I-72, I-74, I-80, I-88, I-90, and I-94. The Mississippi and Illinois rivers represent crucial transportation routes for the state’s agricultural system. Lake Michigan also connects Illinois with the Atlantic Ocean through Saint Lawrence Seaway.
Culture is very important in Illinois
Moving to Illinois for the culture
Let’s be honest, Chicago equals Illinois. From its earliest days, it was the central point of practically everything important in Illinois. This city offers so many possibilities in all the aspects of society – professional movers Chicago included. This is particularly true when talking about culture. The theater is very important here. There are four major theater companies in Chicago: Goodman Theatre in the Loop, Chicago Shakespeare Theater at Navy Pier, and Steppenwolf Theatre and Victory Gardens Theater in Lincoln Park.
New York’s Broadway is probably the most famous theater in the USA, but the Broadway in Chicago offers the same quality of entertainment. One of the best orchestras in the world plays in the Symphony Center and that is the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. There are also many museums in the city, with the Chicago History Museum and the Driehaus Museum being the most important.

Why the ‘end of the startup era’ could be great for entrepreneurs

Three prominent tech thinkers recently declared the end of the startup era, questioned the future of tech innovation generally and heralded the rise of the “Frightful Five” — Apple, Amazon, Facebook, Google and Microsoft — who will dominate the future of tech. All of the posts make credible arguments, but ignore how consolidation could be good, even great, for startups.
If we define startup success as building cornerstone companies that will go down in history and be worth hundreds of billions of dollars, we may, in fact, be entering a lean period. If we define success as building an ever wider assortment of products, shipping them to tens of millions of users and earning hundreds of millions, or even billions of dollars in short time frames, the good times may just be getting started.
Just look at the case of tbh — Ben Thompson suggests that Facebook likely paid ~$80 million for the seed-funded, one-year-old company. Each founder probably made close to $15 million for a year of work, making them better paid than All-Star NBA Champion Stephen Curry. Entrepreneurs may have to settle for acquiring mere generational wealth, rather than becoming “pledge to cure all diseases” wealthy, but the death of startups has been greatly exaggerated.
How consolidation could be great for startups
The kind of industry consolidation we see with the “Frightful Five” isn’t new to tech, it’s the norm in most industries and can actually spur innovation. The pharmaceutical and packaged food industries are heavily consolidated, have thriving startup scenes, are hyperactive in M&A and provide a glimpse of how the future of tech may unfold.
Pharma
The pharma industry was one of the earliest tech businesses and is one where first-mover advantage is real. As many leading pharma companies were founded before 1780 as after 1980, and eight of the 10 biggest companies are more than 100 years old. This sounds like the makings of a moribund market, but, in fact, between 2014-2015 there were more than 100 biotech IPOs that generated $10 billion in proceeds. A hundred years after the “winners” were established in pharma, startups are still producing money-making miracle drugs and minting multi-millionaire startup founders with startling regularity.

How did this happen? The established companies have scaled their organizations to handle the drudge work of getting a drug through clinical trials, past FDA review (and its global counterparts) and, once cleared, into the hands of doctors and patients. This organizational structure and scale make them ill-suited to pursue novel R&D, which is where the startups shine. Startups can now orient themselves entirely toward finding breakthrough cures and not worry about commercialization. If a startup develops a novel cancer drug, or even a molecule that looks promising, Sanofi, Novartis or one of their peers will buy it.
Food
Critics of the pharma comparison will point out that intellectual property is critical in the biotech/life sciences industries and software-based tech startups don’t have the same negotiating leverage. This is a fair point. However, the pattern of large companies focused on marketing and distribution acquiring nimble innovators also plays out in the packaged food business, which, like software, has little in the way of IP, relies on commodities as inputs and thrives by surfing changing consumer tastes. Look at the top 10 packaged food companies by revenue and the years in which they were founded:

Despite this consolidation, last year there were 614 food and drink company acquisitions.
The diversity of the startups is impressive, their simplicity of their offerings even more so. Krave Jerky served paleo enthusiasts, and Dave’s Bread was a godsend to gluten lovers, but both were rewarded with quarter-billion-dollar exits for improving on product categories that are approximately 10,000 years old.
Startups aren’t limited to acquisitions either. Chobani went from a niche product to owning 20 percent of the yogurt market in a little over 10 years. In 2015, two dog food startups debuted on the public markets with a combined $6 billion in market cap.
It’s true that the founders of RX Bar will probably not go down in history the way W.K. Kellogg did, but they still managed to turn a $10,000 investment into a $600 million fortune in four years. That seems like the sign of a healthy entrepreneurial ecosystem, not a weak one.
Not only could this pattern work in tech, in some sectors it’s already the norm. Google has acquired at least 211 startups since 2001. IAC has owned the online dating space from Match.com and has bought up many of the 45 sub-brands that make up its portfolio.
Tech is maturing
Some believe that the tech industry will be perpetually churning and creating new market leaders. As Friendster gave way to Myspace, and Myspace lost out to Facebook, so shalt Facebook be upstaged by the next great social network. Microsoft once looked unassailable and was ultimately brought low by changing technology and the Justice Department, and so will Google, they say.
That’s always a possibility, but the reality is these companies have benefited from capturing billions of users in the crossover from desktop to mobile computing and established business models that are native to the web. The founders of Facebook, Amazon and Google will likely be running their companies for decades to come.
How to navigate the post-startup landscape
Fortune favors efficient entrepreneurs… In a world where new tech startups don’t have a clear path to Facebook-sized valuations, one way to thrive is to avoid raising so much VC funding where becoming the “next Google” is the only way to win. There’s no shame in a $100 million startup. Fred Wilson and USV have created a legendary firm on $1-3 billion dollar exits (with a couple of notable outliers).
If a startup isn’t building for the long haul, they should orient themselves to a world where more humble valuations are the norm. There are dozens of startups that got huge with almost no capital. It’s possible to make more money as an entrepreneur by raising very little capital and selling for a low price than raising huge sums and selling for a high price. Entrepreneurs shouldn’t aim small or plan their company around an acquisition, but they shouldn’t close the door on the option by overfunding.
…and audacious projects Today, many equate startups and entrepreneurship with the lean, public development process that enabled Mark Zuckerberg to create in a dorm room the most powerful media company the world has ever known. This is not the historical norm. We may be due for a period where major capital expenditures are required to create the platforms of the future.
That process can look messy. Magic Leap has been able to easily conjure piles of cash, but thus far has been unwilling to perform even the simplest parlor trick for the press, leading many to speculate that its eventual release will result in a Juicero-like splat instead of a Jobsian reveal.
But is it that crazy for a startup to invest $1.9 billion to develop something, that if successful, will be a new kind of display technology with the potential to rival OLED? If this investment pays off, and the patents are strong, Magic Leap will be in a position to compete with Apple, Facebook, Google and Microsoft in the race for AR. Even if it ends up being “just” an awesome game platform, the amount invested isn’t crazy. Sony spent more than $3 billion in R&D developing their third-generation PlayStation console and Microsoft spent $100 million improving their Xbox game controller. If Magic Leap finally ships a functional product, founder Rony Abovitz will deserve plaudits for his capital efficiency.
Look to places other than San Francisco… Consumer drones are an $8 billion tech industry that is thoroughly dominated by DJI, a Chinese startup. Perhaps WeChat will decide to take on Facebook in the U.S.? Or Alibaba could one day decide to challenge Amazon in the U.S.? The notion of a Japanese loom maker beating Ford and GM to become the leader in U.S. auto sales seemed crazy at one point as well, but Toyota did it all the same. And who knows what’s being developed in the dorms at Tsinghua University.
…including vape shops In a world where Warby Parker, Casper and Juicero are considered tech companies, it’s worth taking a moment to recognize that the e-cigarette category has become an $8 billion market, and is projected to be worth $20 billion in the next five years. This is within striking distance of Ethereum’s market cap, but unlike cryptocurrencies, which have been obsessed over by the tech cognoscenti, e-cigarettes emerged from gas stations and bodegas seemingly overnight. Vape shops won’t spur the next great startup, but their rapid growth shows that tech has not drawn its last (root beer-scented) breath, and that huge opportunities for startups can come from anywhere.
The market is never truly settled
Nvidia was founded in 1993 with the goal of making better graphics cards for gamers. By its twentieth anniversary, it had attained a comfortable corporate middle age with a valuation in the single-digit billions. Then AI folks began to rely on Nvidia’s hardware, and the company enjoyed a 10X improvement in their stock price in the space of two years. What was once a company that served a niche segment of the tech industry is now a major player — Nvidia’s market cap is twice as large as Tesla’s! It may be the end of the startup world as we’ve known it, but students of business history should feel fine.
