I was looking at some Dead Boy Detectives art and realized Edwin and Charles give off a kinda similar vibe to Kell and Rhy from Shades of Magic. Both externally and internally. I mean, look at any single given art of them. Anyone else agree?

Some silly little Kellila headcanons I think about often:

Kell buys *at least* one new tea from every market he visits. He then sits Lila down and makes her try them all. She goes along with it to make him happy, even if she secretly thinks they all taste the same.

A secret pet name Kell has for Lila is ‘my demonic angel’, but he generally keeps it to himself, except when he’s tired and it just slips out (or when he’s REALLY tired and it comes out as a mumbled ‘my angel’).

Lila likes to kiss the freckles on Kell’s shoulders (modern-day Kell would get an ‘X marks the spot’ tattooed on the spot she kisses most).

Kell likes to collect maps he finds in different port towns - he stashes them all under the bed and after Lila finds them, they make it a tradition to go and find another whenever they dock.

Lila received her first-ever birthday present on her 20th birthday - it was a knife from Kell. She cried. No one’s ever done something like that for her before.

Kell teaches Lila how to dance in the captain’s cabin one night after they talk about the ball during the Essen Tasch.

If Kell knows Lila has to travel between worlds alone he always gives her his coat so she has a piece of home with her.

Kell always wanted to learn how to cook but Maxim and Emira thought it was ‘beneath him’ (plus, it would take his focus off protecting Rhy). When he sails away with Lila he finally gets to learn how. Plus, he likes to cook her fancy meals to show he loves her. She never has to go without food again. (This is one i’ve spoken about a lot with @bluecichlid, who had a similar hc about Kell and cooking!)

Honestly magician tournament isn’t the most original concept but I can’t deny it’s always a fun time. Speaking of the tournament, Kell and Lila could have gotten in so much trouble for sneaking in like it would look so bad to the other nations if it looked like Arnes was cheating, and yet they both didn’t care. That’s something that bothered me about this book, there weren’t natural stakes put in place, instead Kell and Lila just risked everything for shits and giggles. Neither of them had a “bigger cause” or someone to protect, they both just thought it’d be fun to kick some ass, consequences be damned. However, these actions are very fitting to the characters, which is something I loved about this book. My major gripe with the first novel was that we didn’t know the characters well enough, so I was thrilled to actually get to know not just Kell and Lila but also Rhy!! Btw I love Rhy and his relationship with Kell is so important to me.

I will say Alucard was a Great addition and him and Rhy were Fun, although part of me still wishes Kell and Rhy had been best friends to lovers rather than brothers but I digress.

I love the development we got for Lila’s character, she wasn’t just badass and violent, she was Angry and Reckless and Impulsive and honestly a fucking disaster, which I think more women should be.

I think all the characters are so much more fleshed out and complex, while some of them fell flat in the first book we really got to understand the various fears and motivations.

I’m still not 100% sold on Lila x Kell, I like them and I want them to be together but I don’t think it’s the most interesting pairing to choose. I do love Lila and Rhy as a Kell supporter duo, but Alcucard and Kell are so funny together like Kell Hatesss that man and I gotta respect that, if you hurt my friend I would also banish you and threaten to kill you, that’s just the bro code.

Hopes for book 3: more development into Alucard and Rhy’s relationship both past and present, more information about Lila’s past, and Kell getting a fucking break (Also please save Holland I feel like he’s not a bad guy and we could use him as an ally)

Welcome to: pirates and science fiction (with a bit of magic thrown in there for good measure)

I have 4 books on pirates! Raiders & Rebels, a general history of the pyrates, the republic of the pirates and the 4th u can’t see cuz it’s lying down in an annoying way: pirates of the 7 seas. My favourite is the republic of the pirates but the most informational is a general history of the pyrates. I really want more books on Indonesian pirates, china’s history of pirates (specifically Zheng Yi Sao) as well books about female pirates. If anyone has any recommendations I will take them!!!

I also have my complete work of Kafka there because I think it fits in well with the pirate books.

Moving on we have V.E. Schwab land. I love the way they write characters so much, and it transitions beautifully from pirates to magic. And. I finished the third book of the shades of magic series last night. I am book grieving right now. The ending. Holland. Kell. Rhys my baby. I feel so much right now.

Then I have my copy of the night circus, which if you’re a visual reader is definitely your cup of tea. I really enjoyed it! It blurs more into poetry than prose but that exactly what I wanted out of it so I was happy.

Then we enter Science Fiction land starting with the Area X series<3. I love Annihilation. I loved the movie and I love the book even more. It’s everything I wanted it to be and more. Beautiful, beautiful writing.

Then we have Dune and look away I haven’t read it ok?? I have it I’ve made it 100 pages in and put it down because I was getting restless. Not bored, restless. It’s a different feeling.

Then my maze runner books because I will always have such a fond place in my heart for that series. Newt was the first fictional character I got attached to & was a huge part of my identity back when I was a lil guy reading these.

Also honorary moment for the pulp science fiction books I keep behind the books on this shelf because I am also yet to read them.
