Honestly magician tournament isn’t the most original concept but I can’t deny it’s always a fun time. Speaking of the tournament, Kell and Lila could have gotten in so much trouble for sneaking in like it would look so bad to the other nations if it looked like Arnes was cheating, and yet they both didn’t care. That’s something that bothered me about this book, there weren’t natural stakes put in place, instead Kell and Lila just risked everything for shits and giggles. Neither of them had a “bigger cause” or someone to protect, they both just thought it’d be fun to kick some ass, consequences be damned. However, these actions are very fitting to the characters, which is something I loved about this book. My major gripe with the first novel was that we didn’t know the characters well enough, so I was thrilled to actually get to know not just Kell and Lila but also Rhy!! Btw I love Rhy and his relationship with Kell is so important to me.

I will say Alucard was a Great addition and him and Rhy were Fun, although part of me still wishes Kell and Rhy had been best friends to lovers rather than brothers but I digress.

I love the development we got for Lila’s character, she wasn’t just badass and violent, she was Angry and Reckless and Impulsive and honestly a fucking disaster, which I think more women should be.

I think all the characters are so much more fleshed out and complex, while some of them fell flat in the first book we really got to understand the various fears and motivations.

I’m still not 100% sold on Lila x Kell, I like them and I want them to be together but I don’t think it’s the most interesting pairing to choose. I do love Lila and Rhy as a Kell supporter duo, but Alcucard and Kell are so funny together like Kell Hatesss that man and I gotta respect that, if you hurt my friend I would also banish you and threaten to kill you, that’s just the bro code.

Hopes for book 3: more development into Alucard and Rhy’s relationship both past and present, more information about Lila’s past, and Kell getting a fucking break (Also please save Holland I feel like he’s not a bad guy and we could use him as an ally)

Sorry it doesn't have a lot of Lila, for some reason Alucard POV came to me and then got away from me. It is a bit long than my usual stuff, so I hope you enjoy regardless! (and yes this man is so terribly whumpable is a delight)

A Gathering of Shadows brings us back to the magical Londons to once again join Kell, Lila, and Rhy on their adventures.

I got my hands on this book as fast as I could after reading A Darker Shade of Magic. Honestly though, it was nowhere near as good as A Darker Shade of Magic, or A Conjuring of Light. In A Gathering of Shadows, there is a magical tournament that only the best of magicians compete in. Enter Lila, who of course manages to weasel her way in, disguised as a competitor who she sent on a ship headed far away. Lila, who has made her way once again back to London on the ship she intended to steal, but ended up being part of the crew. However, Lila isn’t the only one of our familiar faces we’ll see in this tournament. Kell too is disguised and competing. 

I found the new adventure of the tournament an interesting tale, where I learnt more about the world that Victoria Schwab has created. 

However, being completely honest, I found Lila a bit annoying in this book, due to her arrogance, and the the fact that “she’s not like most girls” was brought up so. many. times. It’s even directly said, by Lila herself “I’m not most girls”.  Kell, as always, is my precious favourite. I didn’t warm to Alucard in this book, but he’s an interesting character. 

Despite this being my least favourite of this trilogy, the third book is so worth reading this one.
