When you went public with Carlos, it was by accident.

You had been out with him and Lando in Monaco one day, and Lando said something that made Carlos kiss you, and Lando just chuckled and held up his hands when he did.

Well, it was caught on camera by a couple of fans, and so you and Carlos decided to announce it to the world that you were together rather than let rumors go around about your "supposed" relationship.

Though no one knew the extent of your relationship with Carlos, most thought that you had only just gotten together.

But the two of you had, in fact, been together for over ten years and married for seven.

You two also had three children, Carlos, age five; Landon, age 4; and Miliea, age 2, with a fourth on the way, but there was no bump in when the world found out about your relationship; it was why you and Carlos were out with Lando in the first place.

Kelly was your best friend on the grid the two of you bonding about being pregnant at the same time.

When you did start to show, you made a post about how much you loved your husband.

It was how you announced your pregnancy, seven-year marriage, ten-year relationship, and three other children to the world.

It wasn't conventional, but very you and on brand for what Carlos knew of you and what the world knew of you from what Carlos had told them.

There were many edits of the two of you, of how Carlos looked at you the same way that he and Lando looked at each other, and you thought the edits were like that were funny, the ones comparing you and Carlos to Carlos and Lando.

You would send those videos to Lando and to Carlos.

They would sometimes chuckle, and others just shake their head at you; Carlos was mostly the latter, while Lando chuckled.

Your kids loved their Uncle Lala; they got the name from Lando's niece, Mila, when you brought them to McLaren, and Lando's family was there.

When your relationship went public, you expected more hate than you actually got because you had seen what some other WAGs get it horrendously bad with the hate.

You didn't want that, but there were more supporters than haters, and you barely saw the hate comments because you were often too busy with your three, sometimes four children on top of your pregnancy.

But everything was good in your life with Carlos, and you were happy with him and the family you built.

It got ten times easier when everything was out in the open, well, the less private bits weren't but, most of it was out there for the world to see and judge, and you were okay with that.

hate stalker context

Note added for context: A "confessions" account has been posting anon hate for the past week or so, mostly toward writers in the pedro pascal fandom. A parasocial hater of mine discovered the account and has been going to town. I posted this after a particularly revolting analogy they used.

Obviously I am disgusted and floored that anyone would post such a deranged analogy in the interest of stirring up fandom drama. I'm very sorry to everyone who has been attacked and everyone who has witnessed all this. Others have posted about the situation as a whole, and I'm not sure what I could add. But I want you to know many of these "confessions" are from one individual who has been fixated on me (and probably others) for weeks if not months. I already had the following in my drafts:

I normally don't address things like this, but that's only because I'm trying to keep it off your dash and off my blog. This is for several reasons, including not wanting to give the hater a larger audience for their message. Normally I block/delete. But thanks to a blog dedicated to posting anon hate, some of this is already on the dash, and I thought some additional context could be illuminating.

a couple weeks ago, this person chimed in on my non-fandom post, and their comment made me uncomfortable. I checked to see if they followed me and they didn't, plus their blog tagline was antagonistic - "bs smeller from a mile away." So I was confident they weren't being earnest. I replied, taking issue with their comment and asking them to keep their thoughts to themselves rather than coming at me from a sideblog. I wrongly assumed they must have followed me from a main account since they somehow found an un-tagged, un-reblogged post without following me. But I now realize they were simply hate checking my blog.

These first ones are from their burner after I blocked the account that started it:

I won't be dropping this creep's url in this post, but I had never heard of them. This week they have repeatedly changed their url, display name, and blog appearance. Their writing is recognizable and I believe they are also responsible for the unhinged asks preceding katy's departure from tumblr. They also made a rude comment on her post.

They were saying this last bit preemptively - I've never talked about stalkers here. I didn't include all their anons, just enough to show they clearly out themselves as being the same person. In other "confessions," they make repeated references to a former fandom writer they idolize (not me) who they also posted about on their blog.

This may only aggravate them. I expect them to hurl any lies and accusations they can think of toward me. They will act like they're laughing and amused, too. You may recognize their tone. I want to trust people not to automatically believe and repeat things they hear, but unfortunately my experience in this fandom leaves me pessimistic.

I can only hope people use common sense at this point.

yup! and i'm so serious about it that i made a whole blog for it. i'm a white queer ex-cath tran doing this as an art and writing exercise, so feedback from other creatives + jewish and/or racialized folks is especially welcome.

i'm putting this post and only this post in the main tags for visibility. also, not gonna link my main, but i do make my own original stuff, and i encourage fans and haters alike to do the same.

anyway, here's a mostly good-faith 1.7k-word essay on the original. i think it's pretty funny and brings up some less talked-about points. correct me on the facts, disagree with my opinions, and ask clarifying questions, but don't come at me with any piss-poor reading comprehension.

the hellaverse is garbage, and here's why

1. vivienne medrano, the person

medrano was born as a well-off white-passing latina (salvadoran-american) in bougieass frederick, maryland. while attending new york's top art school, she got popular on deviantart-tumblr-twitter by being a prolific multifandom fujoshi furry who's more into ornamental character design than storytelling. upon graduation, she leveraged her fanbase and industry connections to make the hazbin and helluva boss pilots, get helluva made for youtube, and get hazbin made for amazon prime.

like every woman online, she gets harassed for no good reason, and as a certified autist, i will defend her right to be dumb, weird, annoying, and bad with words. however, there are legit reasons to criticize her:

racism, misogyny, homophobia, fatphobia, some antisemitism, past transphobia, past ableism

shitty boss, bad friend

cowardly, vindictive, manipulative, thoughtless behavior

skeevy friends

sucks at taking criticism

in short, i think she desperately needs a PR person and someone to clean up her digital footprint.

2. medrano's art

incurious

inauthentic

noncommittal

creatively stagnant

overindulgent, and the indulgence isn't even fun

shallow and childish framed as complex and mature

bland and boring framed as shocking and subversive

to be clear, i'm at peace with the existence of suckass art like this; i just think the money, attention, and praise it gets are unearned and should go to more interesting works, of which there are infinite.

medrano's had the time, money, and social cache to grow as an artist, learn from the best, and take creative risks, but she hasn't. if she truly has nothing more to offer, she should let her collaborators take the wheel, but she doesn't do that either. instead, she keeps getting more and more resources to make the same baby bullshit, and that pisses me off. she could be the nicest person ever, and this fundamental arrogance would still make her art blow.

stop with the pointless guilt: liking medrano's work does not make you stupid or evil. however, if you stay in the kiddie pool of culture, if you refuse to engage with a diversity of art, if the hellaverse is your point of reference for anything media-related, you can't expect to have your opinions on art, media, or culture taken seriously. you have not earned a seat at the table. you gotta hit the books first.

i cannot emphasize enough how much incredible stuff is out there if you're willing to look further than what social media and streaming services put right in front of you. if you come away from this blog having learned about just one new artist or piece of art, i'll be a happy camper.

3. the hellaverse

a. empty and confused

hazbin and helluva's content and marketing has no clear target audience. the subjects are inappropiate for teens, but the execution is too childish for adults, and lemme tell you what i don't mean by that, first.

not inherently inappropriate for teens:

sex and sexuality

violence, including when it intersects with the above

politics and religion

not inherently childish:

animation (any style)

comedy

episodic writing and/or loose continuity

young characters

fun, happiness, optimism, the power of friendship, cuteness, tenderness, sincerity, etc.

what i mean is that these shows are literally about adult characters who fuck, smoke, drink, do drugs, go clubbing, work full-time, manage their own finances, and deal with stuff like bureaucracy, sexual violence, domestic abuse, marriage, divorce, late adoption, and family estrangement.

however, none of these "adult" things are given enough specificity to create drama or comedy. it's all too stock, vague, flat, weirdly sanitized, and thus utterly banal—pure aesthetics on top of bad saturday morning cartoons. it's exactly what i'd expect from a sheltered disney kid who needs to log off and get into their local gay scene ASAP so their only contact with things like poverty, policing, addiction, and sex work stops being facile movies and TV.

if the shows were aware of this and played with it, that could be amazing, but they're not. they give you the mickey mouse version of the world with a straight face and then play looney tunes sound effects to try to make you laugh and sad_violin.mp3 to try to make you cry. now that's funny.

b. old and tired

let's make like americans and pretend that the rest of the world doesn't exist. even within the confines of the USA, home of the hays code, the red scare, and reaganite propaganda, this neopuritan fascist state ruled by 1000 megachurches in a trenchcoat, the indie/underground animation scene has been doing crazier shit for decades. anti-war films in the 60's, bakshi movies in the 70's, the simpsons shorts and r-rated movies in the 80's, adult swim and MTV in the 90's, flash/newgrounds/youtube in the 00's, streaming in the 2010's—so what are we doing in the 2020's with this wet white rice drowned in expired ketchup? i feel crazy making this point because it's obvious if you've watched these things, but if you haven't, you're gonna be like "well, there's gotta be something new here". no! there isn't! in the words of jimmy "the scot" jordan, nothing, nothing, NOTHING!

c. ideological purgatory

actually, there is one thing in these shows i've never seen before: the presbysterianism. shout out some interesting or at least intentional presbysterian art in the comments, because the way these ideas are presented here is not compelling. it just makes the rainbow neoliberalism even more confusing and contradictory.

i guess the big presbysterian things are protestanism, calvinism, and, uh, big church government? presbysterians, get your shit together. get your brand down. catholics have BDSM and vampires, evangelicals have TV and corporatism; what do you have? celtic crosses? no wonder medrano has such uninspired ideas on divinity.

d. queer deficiency

when i look at a piece of art, i ask myself: "what does this give me that i can't get from the hunchback of notre dame (1996)?" if the answer is as limp as "uhh, gay people, i guess", i can probably look for my gay shit elsewhere and rewatch the hunchback of notre dame (1996) in the meantime.

but let's say that you have no standards. you've been waiting for ages for a show about gays by the gays for the gays, and by god you're gonna get it. this is it! here we go! time for some

...yeah, it's not very queer. and by "queer", i mean "questioning or subverting gender norms (including sexual roles) within a given cultural context regardless of creator identity and intent". i'm not a queer studies scholar so LMK if there's a more specific term for this, but whatever you call it, it's not in the hellaverse much.

there's not even any transness, literal or metaphorical, just ancient drag jokes. i guess the writers thought we would've been too controversial. so much for an indie animation studio that prides itself in the diversity of its staff both above and below the line, bakshi-style. i wonder how medrano, a bisexual woman, would've felt if told that a lesbian main couple in hazbin would be "too controversial".

4. spindlehorse and the vivziepop brand

spindlehorse toons underpays its overworked staff and keeps outsourcing more and more labor to even more overworked freelancers overseas to cut costs. a rainbow sweatshop is still a sweatshop, and just because these practices may be "industry standard" doesn't make them any more ethical.

the studio has also been repeatedly accused by current and former employees and contractors of creating a hostile and abusive workplace. AFAIK, it still has no dedicated HR person, and victims are too afraid of retaliation like blacklisting and online harassment to speak out.

this is exactly the stuff that unions exist to prevent. as i'm writing this, the IATSE (the parent union of TAG, which is the parent union of all US animation unions) is negotiating with entertainment industry executives for better working conditions, and if the execs fuck around like last year, it's strike time again. so watch this space, voice your support, and don't cross any picket lines.

i hope spindlehorse unionizes, but until then and for these reasons, i don't think you should give money to the company.

first of all, all content on amazon-owned platforms is ok to pirate, and all youtube ads are ok to block. everyone involved in making the episodes has (or should have) been paid upfront, so you're not taking the bread out of anyone's mouth.

the hazbin website also has $15 pins, one $20 keychain, and $6 trading card packs. people are weird about trading cards, so if for some reason you wanna gamble for a mass-produced bit of cardboard, plastic, and tinfoil, at least bulk-order for all the vivziepoppers in your area so it's less of a huge waste. better yet, trace the designs and make infinite bootlegs.

at the end of the day, buying merch is not activism. your bulk order of trading cards will not save any wage slaves from getting evicted from their overpriced studio apartments. however, the shop links you to all the credited artists/designers, and more of your bucks will actually reach them if you buy their designs directly, then turn them into body pillows or life-sized bronze statues or whatever the fuck.

go through the credits of any episode of helluva or hazbin, and you'll find even more creatives you might wanna support. get jinkx monsoon's albums on CD. subscribe to actually good artist, animator, and composer gooseworx. lots of voice actors now have patreon, cameo, or self-hosted pages where you can write better lines for their characters and have them read it. these things may not look as shiny as Official Merch™, but we all need less plastic shit and more culture anyway.

The people who don't engage with thoughtful criticism *from their own friends* and only look at whatever randomly shows up in their For You tab or the main tags unfiltered have such a skewed view of what the core problems are with the game and their defensiveness and rebuttals are just heartfelt "I enjoyed the game it can't be bad!" for the most part

I also enjoyed the game, it is objectively a very well crafted game. It is the best DA game to play. I like the characters. We agree on that. Have you taken the time to consider the gaping plot hole i tripped on, the complete loss of the main character's motivation, the "don't look behind the curtain" metaphysics of Thedas and its accompanying morality, the criticism of the game's clear message that the status quo is god, or the racism that many fans of color can't overlook? You're just going to gloss over how racist and awful Taash's quest is for anyone who comes from a mixed experience because we got our trans rep? You're just gonna ignore the upsetting non-progress, anti-community, and racist messaging baked into Harding's quest? Your essays about how the game made you feel good are not helping. I'm happy for you. I'm happy Lace Harding is allowed to be angry. I'm happy Taash found a queer community and their mom's dying breath validated them. I'm happy both your choices for Archon and all the good guys around them think slavery is bad and are going to take care of it. If you don't want to look deeper, fine, but stop making "essays" that "address" "the haters" because they aren't essays (they aren't structured arguments), they aren't addressing criticisms that are in good faith (because you are ignoring all of them very pointedly except for the absolutely wildest batshit takes you saw on YouTube 2 months ago being parroted by some random Tumblr user you've never met before in the main tag), and I'm not a hater 😔

I keep going and touching grass and recentering my fandom experience with people who just enjoy the game and aren't defensive about it and then someone has to come out swinging with "people who have problems with this game are just reactionary haters because it made me feel good and I am the only person who considered that we needed a story that makes us feel good right now and just like every other DA game these haters will go away--"

You know, I think a lot of the criticisms I have for DA4 are actually founded in some real soul searching and serious thought that I had post-game, after the warm fuzzy feelings wore off. The more I think about them and re-play the game and re-experience those moments, the deeper my concerns and critique go. That is not reactionary "she wasn't the bioware game ***I*** built up in my head" y'know?

aw, man. i actually don't like conflict or negativity, and i hate that some ppl seem determined to pit the couples against each other in the first place, but i've seen/read two things in particular today that have got my hackles up (the poll being one) so i'm gonna say it: i don't think i've seen a single post that enthuses about kb at the expense of fs (maybe one anon but that's bout it), whereas the number of times scrolling through the tag i've seen ppl feel the need to crow about how much more invested they are in fs, how fs are carrying the show, etc. - yes, we all vibe with different characters/dynamics and that's fine - vibe away! nay, enthuse away! but, shocker, you can actually do that without invoking your lack of interest in kb (which, frankly, is your loss!). and, since i'm being blunt, there are, imo, two fairly obvious main reasons for the scale of the disparity (so beyond general variation in taste), and neither are particularly flattering for those in question, so i'm not gonna say them out loud! and that's because i recognise some things you can just keep to yourself, and that way everyone gets to have a good time! sorry to be bitchy, but when stuff like that is in the general tag it's hard to avoid, and even though i know i should just brush it off (cos everyone's entitled to their wrong opinions!), it gets me down nonetheless.

yeah, i'll never understand the need to pit them against each other for one reason or the other tbh. like you said, everyone has their own feelings and opinions and sometimes you're just gonna be drawn to one couple over the other, or one character over the other! i know i personally enjoy both fadelstyle and kantbison, and i adore all of our main four characters in their own ways. it's funny cause in the first few episodes, i was sort of flipping back and forth in terms of who i was more invested in, which was honestly a shock to me because while i have enjoyed joongdunk in the past, their shows and characters haven't compelled me in the same ways that firstkhao's have, so i went into thk figuring that they would be the ones to hold my attention the most. and while that did end up being the case, fadel and style have ALSO become beloved to me in their own ways and there was even a period in the beginning of the show where i was MORE invested in them! but kb have definitely captured my attention the most and again, it does just come down to personal taste - i find the layers of their story to be personally more compelling, and i find kant's character specifically to be incredibly fascinating because of the absolute lack of agency he really has in anything he does up until now.

but again, it's all a matter of personal taste. i recognize not everyone is going to view these characters the same way i do or have the same attachment, and that's okay! and it's very odd to me the way that a lot of people who prefer fs will choose to hate on kb or flaunt which one they prefer more. like if you post about the things you love, we'll get the message either way without you needing to bring down the other pair and make others feel bad for enjoying them. i don't think anyone before now has really questioned which couple i prefer, but the only time i ever actually acknowledged that (outside of this ask) was to say that i was SAD fs didn't interest me more because i do genuinely enjoy them as characters, but kb take up so much of my brain that i just can't focus on them as much.

and it's not to say if you wanna be a hater, you can't be a hater, like that's fine. but at the same time idk. people that DO like those things don't wanna see that when they're just trying to enjoy the tag of their fave show, yknow? but that's also why i at least prefer to keep to my dash instead of going into tags, cause i prefer keeping it to those i trust to keep it tasteful than those that will go into main tags and shout their hate for things from the rooftops sjdfsdkj

Okay so I won't name any names for two reasons: One because I'm not an ass and TWO bc I'm afraid one of the server owners will find this post n yell at me even though I don't even know if they have a Tumblr <333 anyways this is gonna be mostly bullet points where I put as much bad shit as I remember from this server I joined while it's still fresh in my mind. So first of all, important thing about my character is she has a mortal partner and I mentioned that, and obviously knowing how the lore is I was like "She's going to keep her girlfriend a secret though because she does realize how that would go down if anyone knew" and they straight up said no???? And me, being socially awkward, immediately left in response bc I didn't have anyone else in mind to use as a character LMFAO- and it was only then that they asked me to rejoin and they changed their tune and said it was okay?? I did have my character ghoul her gf later so it was fine but that was... weird. But ok

Another thing about my character is: She does urban exploration in deserted buildings for aesthetic pics! Very risky obviously but one of the main points I was making about my character is that she's a very reckless fledgling girl. So she makes stupid decisions sometimes. Her sire is dead y'all she's gonna be a little dumb. But anyways I tagged an ST for these types of scenes exactly TWICE and then never again because every time he kinda just sent random bullshit at me to basically chase me out of the area and whatever I was rping??? I'm not irritated that my character couldn't just do what she wanted to be clear- I'm just irritated that most of the rp was straight up "no" instead of giving me anything to work with. I don't blame the entire server on this but have a horror story within the horror story. So there was this one player who immediately wanted to ERP with me and to their credit they did ask first. So we did it because my weakness is that I'm a slut in theory <3 (it was... not good. I don't think that person had ever had sex with a woman before and the way they typed responses was SO BAD) and they kept like horny messaging me in like ALL THEIR MESSAGES and like as hyper sexual and very 18+ as this blog is I don't like talking about sex ALL THE TIME. This motherfucker somehow made SEX unsexy it was pissing me off. So they disappeared for a while and I forgot about them and then they came back and they dmed me right? And they were like "What have you been up to" and I was just like "Oh I'm actually working on a lot of stuff! :)" (bc I was) and they were like "haha me too" and sent a gif of a porn actor beating off and ngl. That shit pissed me off so bad I just had my bf take my phone and respond "He's busy rn lil bro ;)" before blocking LMAO. Sorry, I was NOT the bigger person in that situation. Anyways end of my mini horror story haha

People were using ai as their literal character profiles. Not joking. They used ai for a LOT of stuff and I was dying inside as I kept seeing it happening.

Like there were several rp channels in the server that suddenly opened up while I was there where characters would randomly teleport there and fight to the death before being revived back in... well, Seattle because that's where this server was set. I guess that's a fun concept for a different ttrpg but this is VTM???? The whole point is that the setting is realistic and gritty and. This felt so anime MMO THAT should've been the final straw for me and it just. Wasn't.

Should also mention that in response to experiencing this for the first time one of the characters said VERBATIM "Is this... how do they say, an isekai?" That shit pissed me off SO BAD I wanted to throw my phone away lmfaoooo

Oh also for some of the characters who were mid rp when they left just. Had their characters killed off after they left. No joke AT ALLLLL

Hi, I'm asking this question because I'm genuinely afraid. I want to post art I did/I commissioned a different artist of Pompous Pep on my blog, but I'm terrified of others attacking me. I've always liked this ship since I was kid and didn't it was considered taboo until I was older. How do you deal with hate? Would it be better to post on a side blog? My main DP AU does have Pompous Pep when Danny is in his early to mid 20s.

I answered a similar ask here, but this one also deserves its own answer. Here are some things you can do to protect yourself from hate:

✦ Turn off anonymous asks. That curbs 99.9999% of abuse, because haters are too chickenshit to send stuff that they can get reported for and possibly have their account terminated. If you do decide to open anonymous asks at some point and receive hate, you can still report it. More on blocking here.

✦ Make sure you tag your post with "pompous pep" so those who love the ship can find it and those who have the tag blocked can avoid it.

✦ As you can see, there are quite a few of us Pompep fans here on Tumblr, and it's good to be part of a community. Being able to laugh off anon hate with one another is a superb morale-booster. (If you spend any amount of time on Discord, DM me. We have a server, and you'd be very welcome there.)

Bottom line: Haters will always find a reason to hate something they don't like. You can never "perform" purely enough to please them, so don't even try. If you age up Danny and Vlad, they'll still bitch about the age gap. If you make them the same age, they'll bitch about the "toxic dynamic" of Enemies to Lovers. If you make an AU where they've always been friends and are the exact same age, they'll still accuse you of Shipping Crimes™ because it's still the same characters—even if all the obstacles that made the ship problematic have been removed. All you'll do is wear yourself out trying to conform to their standards, so just say "fuck em" and do what you want.

Me, personally, I've been in fandom too long to be bothered by anon hate. I report them, block them, and delete the message, and I don't waste any more energy than necessary. I also follow the golden rule of Don't Feed the Trolls. Haters thrive on attention, and if they get no response from you, they'll eventually give up their attack and move on.

I'm sorry that the actions of an idiotic, vocal minority have made you afraid to participate in fandom activities. No one should ever feel that way. Just remember that you're not alone. Almost all of us Pompep fans have dealt with negativity at some point in our lives, but that hasn't stopped us at all. We're still here, and we'll always be here.

✦ As for sideblogs, they're great if you want to keep certain stuff separate from your main blog, but it's totally up to you. Just keep in mind, if you want to block anyone from seeing your sideblog, it must be done from the Blog Settings of that particular sideblog. More on sideblogs here.

Any director’s cut comments on cool dry place? Of all your fics that’s one that’s really stuck with me!

ahhh thank u for asking, i lovee cool dry place!! sorry in advance bc i have a lot to say about it... to get super high-level with it, i think that my personal preference in fic is always going to be toward fic that is messy. there is obviously something very sweet about fic where they realize or admit their feelings and it's like a flip of a switch. they're together and everything is kinda solved. and there's a place for that type of story - i've certainly written those stories!! - but in general, i gravitate more toward fic where it isn't that easy. where there is not a straight or instant line between knowing the love is there and having a happily ever after. no hate to the whole 'friends to fiances' tag or whatever it is that's super popular w/ buddie but i am just a teeny tiny bit of hater about it. bc i always ending being like But Is That Realistic. But Would That Happen.

and i think it takes some of the tension out of the thing! isn't it more interesting when them getting together brings with it all the same old challenges and troubles that already exist in their relationship?? which is just my personal preference, obvi, and shit does not have to be realistic to be sweet or interesting or so on and so forth, but i think it's often more interesting to mee when buddie getting together is a little hard, and not bc of any lack of love between the two of them. so cool dry place was one of my tries at exploring that. i think eddie after chris comes home is in a super interesting headspace - in the imagined moment of this fic where chris comes home much earlier, obviously, but i think it's pretty true to where eddie is/could be in the show too - bc eddie is still so scared! he's trying very hard to be the person he wants to be to both christopher and buck in this moment, but the fear of messing things up with chris again is overwhelming him.

i think it kind of had to be buck's perspective for a lot of reasons - i don't think i ever considered making it eddie's - but mainly bc i think you need buck completely understanding why eddie is reacting like this - why he's soo hesitant and careful, why fear keeps getting the better of him with christopher - and being hurt by it anyway. it was originally supposed to be even a little more of a fight, but it never really got there, bc buck really does get it. he knows eddie so well. he understands basically all of why he feels this way, even if he doesn't agree with him.

i loveee the difference between eddie's confidence in the get-together / admission scene vs the main scene of the fic. his love for buck is something he feels so sure of, so it's so easy for him to say that to buck:

“We’re talking about the same thing,” Buck said. “Right?” “Yeah,” Eddie said, easy as anything. Like he didn’t have any doubt.

vs later in the fic when he's all doubt. he's all second-guessing. it's so, so easy when it's just him and buck. there's just no question - even when there is for buck! even when this is brand-new to buck and he can barely believe it! but for eddie, it's when the whole rest of the world starts creeping in that he gets scared.

the fic doesn't get deep into this - in part bc it is buck's perspective - but i really liked having a chance to write a little about how eddie is feeling in this moment vis a vis being gay. i am an eddie gay truther (obviously.... lmao) and i have an endless well of thoughts and feelings on how eddie would be navigating his relationship to being gay. i like that in this fic, buck is only one who actually says 'gay'! eddie keeps talking around it a little, as much as it becomes clear that he's talked to buck about it before, and it's easier rn for buck to be the one to name it directly. i think sometimes i have a bit of hesitance about writing super directly about eddie and his identity and i think that's partly bc i think eddie's pretty hesitant, too, lmao - one day i'm going to actually tackle writing a coming out scene with eddie's parents, but i think it's going to be a real challenge. that's one of the things that i really love about eddie: as a character, he's striking a really, really interesting balance between keeping everything he feels hidden and being able to so clearly articulate the things that are important to him or that he's come to be sure of (will scene et al). it's fun to try to figure out how he talks about things like buck, like being gay, like being in love, when he knows what he feels but may not quite have figured out how to turn it into something he can talk about. u know what i mean??

i don't have a million things that i cut from this! along with the original concept being more a fight, they were also originally actually together, had kissed, etc etc, before this fight, but i figured out w/ consultation from the groupchat that it hit harder if they hadn't yet. if it was still all anticipation. it ratcheted up the drama and also made it a lot clearer how the anxiety between them was just building and building, bc they hadn't had any real outlet for it yet.

it's messy and it's hard and it's (hopefully) somewhat realistic. and they figure it out together!! i love buddie!!!!

FINAL NOTE: i may have said this here at one point, but i published this and stand there and get hit in the same week. i came up with the title of stand there and get hit like four months before i finished it (from spent gladiator 2 by the mountain goats! a banger!); for cool dry place, i was casting around for a title for like hours after the fic was finally done before i landed on cool dry place (from cool dry place, by katy kirby). i picked stand there and get hit knowing that i had just seen the mountain goats performing and they played spent gladiator 2, the same weekend that i started working on that fic. i did not even realize until after i published them both that katy kirby was the opener for that same show and played cool dry place!! it was so funny and delightful when i realized that. stream stand there and get hit by signetsealed.

Like seriously I'm 90% every "get your hate out of tales of arise tag" comment I've seen hit me or my bestie is the same weirdo who not only doesn't understand that he can use the block button to permanently not see things that he doesn't like, but also is such a loser he has to make multiple accounts to yell at a couple of lesbians who were legitimately looking forward to the game in 2021, only to have it be something soooo bad.

And, like, it really just needs to respect its women as characters with agency and not as complicated accessories to its men and it would be, like, a middle of the road tales game. It would still be bloated, with too many meaningless skits and a tendency to use 30 words when they need 10, but that's a common issue with the series. Even Symphonia, one of the greatest entries, drags with serious need of an editor in the back half.

And you can even have straight characters pair off without reducing the women to objects. Tales of Graces F did that in its ending arc. I didn't like it (I actually prefer when games leave shippers wiggle-room, see Vesperia, my absolute fav), but I wouldn't call it particularly misogynistic. Cheria, Pascal, Sophie... they all remain full characters. With agency. It's a good thing.

But since that one person keeps making new accounts to yell at me instead of just getting blocked or blocking, let's talk about what I like about the Arise gals, and how their potential gets gutted by the game's inability to view them as women and not people.

Fair note that I stopped playing after Almeidrea because it was too much of a waste of my time. Past that any knowledge comes from watching my best friend stream. And she's still not through the game.

So. Here goes.

Shionne. The thorns. That's so fucking good. I love them. Themes of enforces isolation vs the yearning for acceptance are my jam. I love that she's an ostracized element of the ruling class. That's fun. Heck, I her design. And gun. When I tried to stomach through a second time she was my main. Love gun.

But. Immediately the game centers her as Alphen's divinely delivered reward for being the propaganda. She literally falls from heaven into his life, the one person who can touch her without pain. Her trauma? Her fears? Her anxieties and defense mechanisms? Oh just have Alphen yell at her. It's fine. It's like Jade slapping Natalia in Abyss x1000 and without the flimsy act 3 stress aspect. Alphen is Man. Woman Obey Man. And in providing men this projectable fantasy of paternalistic domination, the game tosses aside the conflicts that could make Shionne interesting.

Heck, if the game weren't so obsessed with making Alphen the True Hero Protag they could have been such a great pairing. The pieces are there in alphen's backstop, the thorns, the time to build up closeness before yanking away alphen's Immunity. But for all the words they invest into this, they don't let the relationship grow or develop a comfortable status quo for Shionne. It's all for Alphen's benefit. Which makes her kidnapping fall flat. Her thorns affecting Alphen on rescue mean nothing beyond revealing that he might be into that actually (based tbf). Still. All Shionne's potential is wasted as an accessory to Alphen. And its not even horny enough about it to be filling a woman's fetish.

Rinwell. I love this girl as a character. She's such a hater. And her arc as it should be is obvious from step one: she hates. She realizes her hate is bad. She gets over herself. That's a good arc. A classic. Add to this the paranoia of living in a surveillance society, the secrecy of magic, and the beautiful owl motifs and you have one of the characters of all time.

Then Law happens. At first, not terrible. Like I hate Law, but until a point my Law hate is just normal "this character is not for me" shit. Not worth mentioning. He's a cop. He reminds me of the dude who tried to best me up in middle school. Normal irrelevant shit.

But then. Almeidrea.

You have the great stand-off. Rinwell filled with rage. The woman who killed her family right there. She's apparently helpless. Rinwell fires off her magic with intent to kill.

Or others. My friends and I have outlined so many good ways that scene could have gone. The commonality being that they focus on Rinwell, her rage, and her actions and their consequences.

What did the game pick? Law took the blow no problem and delivered a lecture to permanently fix Rinwell's heart. Because her magic was never powerful enough to threaten Almeidrea (could have been fine. Hate is not power, etc), and her emotions are shallow and easily fixed by a guy. Tada. Don't worry ladies just find yourself a man who will lecture you when you're pretty little emotions get too much! You don't need to learn the limits of rage or that revenge is hollow. Those are manly lessons for men. Just learn how to obey your assigned boy. Tee hee.

That was bad enough to stop playing. You can't write that as a climax to a character arc and tell me you see women as people.

Kisara. Honestly the least egregious, but my friends do tease me for thinking Dohalim is cute so it might just be me being blind. Still.

Good: she's the loyal knight. Who doesn't love that? Her loyalty is built on quicksand. FUN. That ass don't quit. Because to be clear I am lesbian and being horny about someone is not the same as sexualizing as an object.

The bad? Honestly mostly that her arc finishes in one chapter and then she's just Dohalim's loyal knight. On its own I wouldn't think much about it because that's her core character.

But.

After reducing Shionne's ball of anxiety, class-consciousness, and hedgehogs dilemma to "a girl who needs her string masochist daddy to hold her and yell at her when she's stressed"

After reducing Rinwell's rage and terror and vengeance to "a girl who just needs a stern talking to from her boyfriend about racism"

Kisara being Dohalim's guard is just. Yeah. I see. She's his accessory.

Arise doesn't let itself have women characters. It has accessories to men. And that keeps it from being good.

Now feel free to make a new account and yell at me again if you want another post because I could probably find one. But I hope you'll learn to block me like a normal person because this game doesn't deserve this attention.

Go play Vesperia instead. It's a character driven mess (positive)

WrestleMania Thoughts & Hot Takes!

Disclaimer: this is just my opinion and I feel like I have to say that bc WWE fans can get heated and honestly I'd love to hear your takes just don't be a dillweed lol also this will be a pretty long text post.

Roman Reigns vs. CM Punk vs. Seth Rollins: this is bound to be a juicy one. I kinda see this being really good no matter who wins. I'm more interested in the Paul Heyman aspect of this. I feel like CM Punk is the babyface in this scenario, Seth is the heel with mystery shrouding what he wants out of Paul Heyman and Roman I think we have a unique opportunity to have his character shift in some way because of this match that isn't reliant on the outcome of the match as much as it is Heyman's loyalty. Did Seth maybe get to Heyman's head and he's going to leave Roman for CM Punk? We have a "monkey in the middle" scenario with Paul Heyman this is definitely bound to change the way we see these three and the Shield history on top of this is the icing on the cake.

Tiffany Stratton vs Charlotte Flair: I'm sorry (and I don't think I'm alone in saying this) but I cannot stand Charlotte one bit and I hope Tiffany eats her up. This should be a pretty intense bout and I wanna see Tiffany put Charlotte in her place physically the way she did with that off the rails promo on Smackdown. Also this could be a really good time for Nia to pop up and return if possible. I'm still waiting for that Nia vs. Tiffany rivalry to get it's proper matchup.

L.A. Knight vs. Jacob Fatu: YEAH! this is gonna be a banger. This is gonna absolutely rock I love them both. I'm rooting for Jacob in this one. I know Jacob is still relatively new to the roster and L.A. Knight JUST got that damn belt back but I'm team Jacob if you will. They do call him the Samoan Werewolf after all.

Jade Cargill vs. Naomi: 😤🙏🏼 this is going to be crazy. This whole story has been absolutely chefs kiss some of the best stuff happening right now. Naomi is one of my absolute favorites and has been for a while. That being said I'm rooting for Jade in this one. I wanna see this one be a long match with plenty of close calls. I feel like Jade winning would carry the weight of the rivalry better than having Naomi win. I wanna see something happening that absolutely enrages Naomi and keeps this rivalry on fire and see the threat levels of Jade go up even more and that feels like the best outcome to support that to me personally. This is just the beginning.

War Raiders vs. The New Day: this should be just a solid match. I hope we get some rad high spots from everyone involved and that's most of what I care about in this one. I hope to see a sweet Viking cartwheel. I think I'm rooting for War Raiders to retain but at the same time, the upset of New Day winning would be a great way to continue to carry their heat and they could be the most obnoxious tag champs and heighten the state of the Raw tag division which right now imo is getting severely outshined by the Smackdown tag division which is on fire. On second thought maybe I want New Day to win 🤔

El Grande Americano vs. Rey Mysterio: this is demask Grande or bust for me. I hope it brings more drama whatever happens. I don't really know with this one I just wanna see the demasking of El Grande and some nasty tea.

Gunther vs. Jey Uso: oooo I soooo hope this is a long one. I'm rooting for Jey idgaf what all the haters have to say this is an incredible time for his Main Event nickname to have some weight attached to it. That being said I'm also not opposed to Gunther retaining but I feel like it'd force Jey to have a character shift bc I think if Jey loses its going to break him. It would cause him to sink to his lowest pit. Gunther losing I think would piss Gunther off so bad who knows what would happen after the match. This one feels foreboding.

Cody Rhodes vs. John Cena: John winning this I feel like would make the world stop for a minute. There is some crazy weight to this and I feel like something super unexpected is almost guaranteed with this match, whatever that may be. I'm rooting for Cody but a part of me does want to see John beat the record and see what happens when he does. I'm like... weirdly nervous for this match.

Iyo Sky vs. Rhea Ripley vs. Bianca Belair: Girl this is going to absolutely rock. These three are so crazy talented you know this match is going to have some crazy high spots. I'm rooting for Iyo personally she's is my #1 right now and she has been so disgustingly disrespected by these two I hope she takes advantage of Rhea and Bianca being at each other's throats and swoops in at just the right time to dunk on both of them full disrespect. My dream outcome is she has them both laid out, steps on BOTH of them, takes to the sky and pins them both causes not just Rhea and Bianca but the whole Raw women's division to be coming after Iyo like piranhas. Now our other outcomes and how I feel is if Rhea wins that's probably my least favorite outcome bc right now I want to see Rhea be taken more as heel character and I want to see that hunger in her eyes build. I want to see Rhea fail over and over for the next while only so she finally gets so fed up she goes ape shit and THEN we get another Rhea title run. Her loss is only a win for the future in my eyes. Bianca now if she wins that would start to legitimize the current WrestleMania streak she has and I do think that that would be pretty cool and it has been a while since we have seen the belt around her waist. That being said I feel like Iyo is just starting this title run and I wish to see it legitimized and I hope to see her have MANY future defenses. None of this defense one a month stuff for Iyo I wanna see full throttle night in night out Iyo and this could be the beginning.

Bron Breakker vs. Penta vs. Finn Balor vs. Dominik Mysterio: Lots that can happen here that is for damn sure. I'm not sure who I want to win so I'm just going to go through each scenario. If Bron wins that's good for the title reign that's for sure. Part of me feels like that's the obvious choice but he's also facing a 25% chance of winning scenario. Well he is a genetic freak after all so we may need some Steiner math on that to get true percent chance of winnin'. Penta is still very new and as much as I absolutely adore him and want to see him win I just feel like it's so early in his wwe career the win wouldn't have the weight that I want it to when he does win a belt and he will eventually I know it. Will he finally turn on the Judgement Day because of it? I want to see Demon Finn come back sooo bad and I know the chances are slim but never say never! Speaking of Dom his addition in here screams issues for Finn and a risk for the already fragile Judgement Day as previously mentioned. I really don't see him winning but! If he did Finn would be so jealous who knows what would happen. It wouldn't be a very long run if he won he would become bait so quick bc no one takes him seriously everyone would think "easy shot for the belt" and eat him alive...unless that's what gives Dom his big break... Doubt tho.

Damian Priest vs. Drew McIntyre: this will be a solid match. I'm rooting for Damian. Either outcome this rivalry isn't over. Not much to say here but I am looking forward to it.

Liv Morgan & Raquel Rodriguez vs. Lyra Valkyria & Bayley: this should be fun but definitely rooting for Liv and Raquel. Lyra and Bayley are cuties together for sure but I'd much rather see them be rivals and have this loss be what breaks them into that.

AJ Styles vs. Logan Paul: high spots guaranteed here folks. Lots of flippy crazy wacky moves. I hope AJ cooks Logan. I hope Logan hits some cool moves (as much as I hate giving him any credit) but definitely think Logan winning would be an absolute joke and a tragedy. Logan you don't want none.

And finally... I hope the Boogeyman makes an appearance on the grandest stage of them all. I know his bitch ass has been lurking in the backstage. I see it on Instagram all the time. I hope he slurps up some worms and freaks out all my friends coming over to watch. I miss seeing his freak. Boogeyman for WrestleMania 41!

I saw the original post because people reblogged it and it sucks too. People be reblogging posts and the block function on this site is half-assed so I keep seeing you crow about how much smarter and more correct your Touhou knowledge is to everyone else. Other people's Merrys don't smile enough for you, other people don't treat Gensokyo as sufficiently dangerous, other people like the series for reasons you deem superficial. Too bad. It's really not fun to be a Touhou fan on tumblr knowing that the prevailing attitudes are so stuck-up, y'know? Yukkuri shiteitte ne and all that? God damn.

Yeah that’s what I mean. You saw the original post because other people reblogged it, thus because they have the opinions you hate, not because I do. You seem to be annoyed about someone being a little hater on their own blog about, specifically, the highest-budget Hifuu fanwork in existence mischaracterizing one of its main two characters (in their opinion) and not tagging it with any of the Touhou tags such that people who love that fanwork can still enjoy it in peace.

Perhaps it’s true that I’m being “stuck-up” and “crowing” about the fact that I enjoy analyzing media through a lens that actually involves the text of that media instead of one billion misremembered doujinshi that don’t resemble it in the slightest. But why would it possibly be my problem if you see it? You’re seeing a tide of opinion that goes against yours rippling out and arguing with the dropped pebble that’s now silent and still at the bottom of the pond.

Thus, it’s “too bad” that you’re not having fun being on Tumblr as a Touhou fan. Tumblr and xkit both have blacklist functions that would allow you to never see another post with my name on it again. But you don’t want that. You want people to stop agreeing with me, and you want me to stop peacefully being a hater in the calm of my own home. That’s why you sent me this ask instead of blocking me and moving on, right?
