#keep-peeta-alive

The way Katniss is just stumbling through the Hunger Games like "I can keep Peeta alive through sheer willpower combined with how much everyone loves him cause he's the most wholesome and perfect person in the whole universe" and Peeta is out here making these elaborate plans; i.e., "she came here with me", "if it weren't for the baby", the locket with pictures of her mom and Prim, and GALE??? Wanting to make alliances.
Like, one of you is Haymitch's carbon copy and it shows.

i know the hunger games isnt about romance i know it isnt a love story but. theres just something so beautiful in the way peeta is the personification of what it means to heal and he /is/ the dandelion and the bread and the hope that things can be better even if they wont be fixed. even if the nightmares dont stop he will still hold her. wake her up and tell her shes alive. shes safe. and when its over and done and theres no more saving or protecting or trying their absolute hardest to die if it means keeping the other alive, the horrors dont stop. but katniss will still find that comfort in peetas arms.

The funniest thing about THG is that most of the happenings could've been prevented if the Gamemakers didn't try to renege on the rule change. If they just allowed Katniss and Peeta to win at the same time without trying to milk as much melodrama as possible out of their star-crossed-lover story, Katniss wouldn't have done that shit with the berries. And the uprisings would've arguably been kept at a minimum.
So really, it's their fault for trying to push their luck.

peeta will lie with the straightest face on the national tv about his unrequited love's pregnancy not consulting it with a single person in his PR, damage management team, and the love interest beforehand, and I love him for that. this is the ideal I want to aspire to.

Catching Fire is a great book, but it's also a hard read when Gale exists or does anything to be honest

Suzanne Collins is one of the few contemporary writers who realizes the importance of names in her stories and the significance they bear. They add so many layers to the story, additional meanings that otherwise would not have existed.
The original trilogy:
Katniss: named after a plant of which you can eat the roots. Her father taught her where to find it and told her that “as long as you can find yourself, you’ll survive” (quote may be a little bit off, but it’s from one of the early chapters in THG). Additionally, the leaves are in the shape of an arrowhead, referencing her skills with the bow which her father also taught her how to use.
Peeta: literally bread lmao. But bread is one of the basic nutritions humans need, a little bit goes a long way to keep you alive. Peeta’s presence in Katniss’s life also kept her alive, literally and figuratively—the burned bread he threw her in the flashback and their complicated relationship.
Primrose: a plant with medicinal purposes, even more significant in light of her work as a medic in Mockingjay.
Gale: literally means “strong wind” and considering that in every encounter with Katniss he’s caused some reaction, he pulls her into directions she maybe initially doesn’t want to go in. Additionally, his name also represents his determination and steadfastness in his beliefs.
TBOSAS
Lucy Gray: named after William Wordsworth’s poem “Lucy Gray” which is about the titular character of the poem who got lost during a blizzard. She literally got lost in snow. Rachel Zegler sang this poem in two parts on the original soundtrack of the movie. When Snow asked who the girl in the song is, Lucy answers that she’s a mystery, just like her.
Snow: aside from the obvious snow references, I think his name is most significant in relation to Lucy and the poem. The only one who knows what caused her disappearance is Snow. He is the reason that Lucy is gone. But her traces in the snow are still visible. He will always remember her because the memory of Lucy has manifested itself in every part of his life.
Coriolanus: named after the Roman general (and also the titular character of Shakespeare’s play), Coriolanus wanted to attack Rome and become its ruler. He was scorned and celebrated by the people, only to be later exiled from the city by them. In TBOSAS, Coriolanus is the star pupil at the Capitol’s academy but sent into exile to the districts after he won the Games with Lucy through cheating.
Volumnia: Coriolanus mother who played a part in his ascent to power. In TBOSAS, she almost serves like a mentor to Coriolanus, teaching him how to think in terms of power.
(Edit) Sejanus: a roman soldier who was betrayed by the roman emperor Tiberius, just like the future president betrayed him.
(Edit) Plinth: got this info from here, but it was too good not to include here. A plinth is a base for a statue or vase to stand on. After Sejanus’s death, all of the Plinth fortune was given to Snow for being such a good to friend him. It was this money that skyrocketed the Snow family from poverty to filthy rich. The Plinth money was the foundation upon which Snow built his power.
There are so many other names that have historical (mostly Roman and Greek) connotations—Plutarch, Seneca, Cinna—but also regular names like Trinket and Beetee bear meanings that represent the character beautifully.
Names are important. For any lover of literature or (aspiring) writers, please look closely at them. They can shape your story into something unique.
Feel free to correct me if I’ve said something wrong. I know there are many names missing, but I can only add so many examples ✊🏻😔

I love that in Catching fire Katniss comes to the conclusion the other tributes are trying to keep Peeta alive because they must see how amazingly perfectly wonderful he is. When in actuality that’s just her having a crush and everyone else recognizing that if Peeta gets hurt Katniss will go fully feral and unhinged and probably try to kill everyone and then herself.

Yes omg!!! The people who gush about how Katniss is such a tough, 'always practical & in control' type, badass in the books who has never had a "girlish" thought in her life just makes me think 'what series did you read?' because book Katniss is nothing like that.
i don’t understand how people can genuinely think that katniss “this would have happened anyway” everdeen settled in her relationship with peeta “my dandelion in the spring” mellark
#everlark#people have had ideas about how katniss should be Not Like Other Girls#that when she is like...actually i am like other girls#people go into a rage#because god forbid a girl be able to hunt her own dinner AND have a hot husband who baked bread to go along with it#like she was waxing poetic about bread boy's arms & eyelashes & sparking blond curls#she liked cuddling & holding he's hand#she was HUNGRY on that beach#and sometimes needed to be litrually sedated because she loves that boy so much#so please stop describing her like some macho robot who was only focussed on war/revolution#when she didn't want to even be the mockingjay#all the adults around her#+ gale#just manipulated/forced/guilt tripped her into it#(like don't get me wrong i understand why they wanted to end snow's regime but still she was a traumatised teen)#and she spends the majority of the series (not just mockingjay) worried about peeta & trying to keep him alive & safe#her whole plan in cf was litrually to kill everyone + herself so that peeta could be the winner#and she was legitimately annoyed that other tributes kept protecting peeta because it made it harder for her to dislike them lmfao#also katniss litrually dreamed about a world were peeta's children could be safe & happy#and lastly not only did she keep the pearl he gave her in cf#but she hides it to keep it safe as if it's peeta's life#and kisses it for comfort while imaging it's peeta#katniss settled?#katniss had no interest in romance?#everlark was rushed?#everlark was forced?#everlark came out of nowhere?#everlark dosn't make sense?#the epilogue was a hetronormative cookie cutter happy ending & was tottally out of place from the rest of the series?#no you just either have bad taste in men or no media literacy or your stuck in that 'romance = weak' ideology

my favorite interpretation is peeta is a very likable and kind dude in the mind of almost everyone who gets to know him. but he’s not the epitome of hope or goodness or all things wonderful to anyone else besides katniss. and she’s completely oblivious to this fact.
like she spends half of catching fire wondering which of his good qualities was motivating the other tributes to sacrifice themselves for him. even knowing she was the face and inspiration for all the uprisings, the fact that everyone — rightfully — thought she would literally die if she lost her fiancé doesn’t cross her mind at all. the fact that they may be keeping peeta alive for her is like nowhere in her head. her whole thought process at one point in the arena is literally “everyone must see how good peeta truly is, the way he’s so charming and charismatic and powerful with crowds-”
like girl, shut up. you’re completely head over heels in love with him. to everyone else, he’s just some guy.
