002: Keelung

Keelung City is interesting.

The night was still young, so after our adventure in Jiufen we took a bus to Keelung City to hit up the Keelung Miaokou Night Market! We stood in this LONG line of people waiting for buses out of Jiufen, listening to the Jiufen cab drivers speak in Mandarin, Korean and English (make that money!) The Keelung bus finally came (about 58 TWD) and we rode about an hour to Keelung.

Immediately when we reached, we checked the times at the train station in Keelung to be sure we could get back to Taipei. We bought our tickets in advance and went in search of Keelung’s popular night market. Our friends had come some months before and suggested different foods to try. There were a ton of booths, but my favorites were the crab soup, the Taiwanese meatballs and the creme filled pastries (the Oreo ones are so good!). 

Keelung Miaokou Night Market had a vibe similar to countryside Korea for me, only because as 2 young Black women with braided hair, WE. GOT. STARES. It wasn’t as bad as what I’ve felt in Busan in Korea (that’s a story for a different day) but we were conscious of it and the fact that the little old ladies at the booths we visited were very curious of us and our hair. I’m happy to say there was no unwanted hair touching! We were able to get through the market in about an hour, so if you’re more of a shopper you may want to make Keelung and Jiufen a day trip.

Then we hung out for a while at the waterfront, just taking in the sights. By this time, we were a bit tired from all the walking of the day and caught the train back to Taipei for some much needed rest.
