Bailey Ober #CleatWatch, A 2024 Retrospective

As usual, I was researching something else Twins-related when I had an idea for a very niche and granular Twins research post. In this case, I stumbled upon the TikTok account of Bailey Ober's cleat supplier and realized I could make a fun cleats by appearance tracker for him like I did for Duran (2023, 2024). Unlike Duran and other players whose cleat game I've noticed prior, who focus on 1-of-1 customization using commissioned graphic designs, Ober is more of a brand/model-focused guy who customizes via pre-existing colorways.

Prior to working with his current cleat supplier, Ober was very straightforward in cleat usage: three pairs of Nike Alpha Huarache Elite 4 Lows, in different colors for pairing with different uniforms. I learned when researching Duran that the Nike Huarache line is very popular among baseball players, and that's definitely borne out.

The red base with dark red accents is Ober's road choice, the white upper/navy lower is for his home alts, both navy and cream, and the white upper/red lower is for home whites. Two interesting notes: Ober uses a pitching toe on all his cleats to protect the trailing cleat from damage. Second, he rarely wears the home whites (Twins starting pitchers choose the game's uniform whenever possible), only 5 times this season in 15 home starts. The full numbers I'll have to break down in another post, but he and Paddack are home navy aficionados.

Usage:

Red road: 3/31, 4/14, 4/26, 5/1, 5/12, 5/18, 6/22, 7/10

White/navy: 4/8, 4/20, 5/24, 5/29

White/red: 5/7

After his April 20th win against the Tigers, Ober was contacted by local influencer and sneakerhead Charley "Winona Kicks" McClay, who offered to supply him with custom cleats. They started with the extremely popular and iconic Nike Kobe 6 Protro "Reverse Grinch", a 2023 update to an even more iconic 2010 Kobe shoe. Ober is only the second MLB player to wear Reverse Grinch cleats, after Triston McKenzie of the Guardians.

6/4/24: Despite losing their debut game against the Yankees, Ober's cleats caught the attention of sneakerhead and sports fashion communities. He alternates between the Reverse Grinches and his original two-tone red cleats for his pre-All-Star break road starts, plus a snazzy pairing with the 4th of July uniforms.

6/16/24: For the City Connect uniforms, Ober and Winona Kicks decided on the Nike KD 3 "Christmas" 2023. They fit in nicely with the predominantly bright yellow accessories rocked by Ober's teammates. As the video mentions, the Reverse Grinches were damaged without a pitching toe, so Ober adds one manually to this and other cleats as needed.

7/22/24: Ober returned to the Kobe 6 model with the "Mambacita" colorway, which replaces the Reverse Grinches as his main cleat to kick off the best stretch of his career. He and Winona Kicks were both very excited about these, and they apparently live up to the hype, as Ober pairs them with a different uniform each time out.

8/9/24: Ober debuted the first of two new pairs, the Kobe 6 "Italian Camo". These are the last cleats he wears more than once; he wears 7 different pairs in his last 7 starts of the season, which seems kind of excessive. He pairs them with the home whites and road grays.

8/15/24: There's a small mystery with this cleat delivery — Winona Kicks posted the video on 8/22, but Ober was clearly wearing the KD 3 "All-Star" 2023 cleats from this video several days prior in his start against the Rangers. There are oddly few pictures of this start online, but they're visible on the broadcast paired with the road grays.

8/26/24: The other cleats from this delivery, Ober only wears the Kobe 4 "Philly" cleats once as well, paired with the home navy he seems to love. They're a nice statement piece, but he got absolutely lit up in them, which might be why he switched to other options.

9/1/24: The Kobe 8 "Halo" cleats were from the 8/9 delivery but went unused for a while because Ober wanted them for a home start. They end up paired with the cream alternates on Barbie Theme Day.

9/18/24: In a fun Minnesota sports crossover, Ober's next cleats are Adidas AE 1 Low "MX Grey", the signature shoe of the Timberwolves' Anthony Edwards. I'm kind of surprised Nike didn't have a problem with Ober wearing Adidas shoes, but we'll take it. Ober wore them well, setting a new single-game career high in strikeouts with 12 (previously 11, set two months prior in the Mambacitas).

9/24/24: Back to Nike, this time custom Sabrina 2s, all-white with a metallic red swoosh, silver accents on the soles and Ober's #17 in very small print on the heel. He goes pretty simple for his first real custom shoe, designing it to match the home whites.

Overall, it seems the partnership between Ober and Winona Kicks was a huge success, seeing as how Ober became a fashion model by season's end. The two collaborated on a whopping nine pairs of cleats, bring Ober to a total of 12 on the season. For reference, that's twice as many cleats as Duran in 2024 in a little over half the games, though three times the innings.

I've learned a lot from my research about basketball shoe culture and the current state of MLB cleat fashion, and this partnership has vaulted Ober up the cleat fashion rankings. He'll never be Tatis in this field, who has an unmatched combination of brand strength, creativity, and thoughtful design, but Ober is carving out his own niche pioneering trendy signature basketball shoes in MLB. He is the only MLB player to wear AE1 or Sabrina cleats, and one of three to wear Kobe cleats (Triston McKenzie, Oswaldo Cabrera).

Tracking Twins players' cleats has proven to be a pretty interesting topic, and introduced me to a lot of trends and terminology I had no idea existed. I might do deep dives on more players (I know SWR has some cool cleats), but I'm also just looking forward to see what Ober and other guys do next year.

hai. what a day. started off w a bang aka 14d final 😃 i’m not gonna lie that i absolutely hated it and was fighting for my life internally but it is what it izzzzz :,) i am very happy to be done w ochem FOREVERRR (not including cl but we aren’t thinking about that just yet). then, i went home and gave pauline + her roommates a tour since they starting to apt hunt for next year! it was fun :D then , i chilled for a bit, got boba w my sis in ww, then took the bus to ktown w jess !!!! we were all craving bingsoo LOLOLLLL it was so good. still thinking about the mango 🤤 i also bought a lesserafim album i love them they’re so talented and cool

then i was on the hill and said my goodbyes to some ppl ;( why does it feel like i’m gonna be gone forever HADJSJS 4 weeks is a long time fr

now i am home waiting for my laundry to dry. i’ve already finish packing pretty much :,D also @ the people that live in my building pls take ur clothes out when they’re done i had to wait almost half an hour 😔 living on the hill all over again

Random Bluepulse headcanons I think about Vol 1: trigger warnings

1) As time goes on, Bart takes up sketching and occasionally uses oil pastels, mostly because he loves the feel and texture of using them. Jaime is one of the only ones privy to his more personal drawings, since he bought Bart a sketchbook for Christmas.

2) Both of them are low-key pretty good dancers and Tye And Virgil think it's so funny. Not necessarily club dancing or anything, but Joan and Barry occasionally drag Bart and Wally (who lived fight me) to family cookouts, and that is when Barry showed him what line dancing was. Jaime can do similar dancing, and while he may have to be very tipsy to do it, Jaime is really good at fast-paced couples dancing despite the fact that Bart can't dance a Latin rhythm to save his life.

3) Bart is actually very GOOD at reading Jaime, and later on after being introduced, Khadji Da. He can always tell when Jaime has something on his mind, or when he's fighting with the scarab, and with time can have a general idea of what Khadji Da is saying as well. It's an odd mix of knowing both Jaime and KD, and what he knows about the Big Bad Blue Beetle and his reactions to things.

4) When they can let loose, they chase each other. They're not quite sure if running or flying is the correct word for it, but Bart takes off into the desert laughing like a maniac and Jaime flies after him in the BB armor. It's like a childish game of tag, and Jaime has more than once swooped Bart up and into the air to "win".

5) As Khadji Da learns more about earth, he realized how uncomfortable and afraid he was of being on "mode" again. He makes a contingency plan that has a list of moded Jaime "symptoms" and armor weaknesses. He gives it to the only people he trusts to both be strong enough to stop him AND make Jaime's safety a priority: Bart Allan, and Jaime's mother Bianca.

6) Jaime adores Bart's eyes. They're bright and beautiful and kind, and Jaime vows to always keep them that way. He will never take advantage of the trust Bart has in him.

7) In a somewhat surprising move to some members of the league, Bart is actually very protective of Jaime and 9/10 times is perfectly willing to fight like a rabid Chihuahua on Jaime's behalf. No matter what other heroes may think after the narrowly avoided reach apocalypse, Bart has an almost unwavering faith in Jaime that leaves Jaime incredibly touched and astonished.

One specific moment sticks out to Jaime. During a mission with some other heroes and league members, some of them let their opinion of the Blue Beetle be known and called into question Jaime's loyalty. Nightwing called for order and that would have been that, if one of them hadn't sneered and asked why Impulse kept defending Blue Beetle since he should "Know better than anyone what those mechanical bugs are capable of." You could hear a pin drop in the silence that followed.

And Jaime swore he couldn't breathe, before Khadji Da Kickstarted his brain in order to watch Bart give a thorough, and somewhat terrifying, verbal beat down to the poor fool who had insulted Jaime. Health update

Sorry, this is going to be a depressing, longish post, feel free to skip or ignore it.

There will be a picture of a fresh surgical scar (no blood) below the cut, be aware if you're squeamish.

I wasn't sure if I'd talk about this publicly, but I'm at a point where I just.. Need an outlet. And my friends have been WONDERFUL, understanding, loving and supportive, but I don't want to whine to them all the time. They deserve a break. ( @kd-heart @gabessquishytum @nickandbinky @smmywinchester45 I love you all so much ❤️)

So at the end of November 2019 I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. It's already the second time I got cancer, the first time was three years ago (when I was 31) with a cancerous growth in my uterus (endometrium Karzinom in German). I had to undergo surgery both times, but where I was lucky three years ago and they were able to remove everything without problem, that wasn't the case this time.

The doctors had to make a giant incision. I was cut open from my sternum just below my boobs, all over my belly down to where my pubes start. They had to remove both ovaries, the appendix, 48 lymph nodes and other stuff.

They stuck me back together with 69 metal clamps. These pictures are from day 13 after the surgery, just before they removed the clamps:

The op was on December 10th and I was in intensive care for a few days, couldnt move for 6 days in total. The nurses had to wash me, pull me back up in bed if I slid down a bit, I couldn't eat anything, it was terrible. I was completely helpless 😣

It already looks much better now (4 weeks after surgery)

I had a cold when I went into surgery, and unfortunately a part of my lung collapsed, which caused problems with my oxygen levels and still to this day makes breathing difficult, especially when I'm lying flat on my back.

The first time I could tentatively sit up in bed was on the 6th day, I couldn't get out of bed until the 8th day.

After that point, I recovered quickly and was able to go home just in time for Christmas.

I'm still so weak and tired. I'm constantly nauseous from the medications, I don't have any appetite. The pain from the giant scar is better now, almost gone, but there are many movements that still cause me pain. A part of my upper thigh, my hip and my bikini zone is numb because they severed some nerves, I hope they'll heal, because this sucks.

And I am terrified.

Oh, and I'm officially in menopause now, which explains the excessive sweating and the crying.

On Tuesday I'll start chemo therapy for the first time in my life.

I don't know what will happen, how the side effects will be... It's all one big, looming horror to me. Will I lose my hair? Will I feel even MORE nauseous? Who knows, it's hard to tell, even for the doctors.

My whole life has changed so much over the past few weeks. It's scary and it totally sucks. I feel like I'm not dealing with it well.

Talking about it helps me a lot. The hospital is providing a free psychologist who specializes in cancer patients, and I've been going to talk to her a few times, which helps. But writing it all down also makes m es feel better, so here we are now.

If you've read all this, thank you. 😘 I know other people's health isn't everybody's thing, but I felt like sharing it with you all regardless.

I will make it through all this, I have no doubt about that. But right now I'm sad and scared and I just want to cry.

忘れられない夜になりました。 MUSIC for ISOLATIONのおふたりの素晴らしい音楽。 田中晴菜さんによる書き下ろし短編。 最高の空間を演出の白鷺美術さん。 金沢小町さんのフードは完売で食べられず残念、、。

朗読のときにちょっとしたハプニングがありましたが、満員のお客さまが見守ってくださる中、最高の時間となりました。

白鷺美術の巽さんとも記念撮影できてうれしかったです。

以前から思っているのだけど、金沢で活動している自分にとっては北陸や金沢で活動してるアーティストとは何かできたらと思っていますが、そもそも出会いがなかったり、自分の知名度のなさで興味を持っていただけなかったりします。

このたびは田中晴菜監督が『幸福な装置』をきっかけにMUSIC for ISOLATIONさんとなんと金沢でこのような企画が実現したのでうれしさとその実現スピードにびっくりしております。

I'll be honest. I don't want diverse artists, actors, writers, etc, because people need to see themselves reflected in the world around them. I mean, I believe they do need that, but that's not why I want it. I want it because it means more varied stories and that benefits everyone, including me. I'm selfish. I want more stories. I want ALL the stories.

The weirdest thing about getting older is that even as your knees get creaky, your back unreliable and your stomach refuses to deal with the junk food you could live once live off of, you don't feel like an adult. Right up until you get a front row seat for teenage social drama. And then it's like "Nope, definitely an adult. Thank goodness."

My #1 post of 2022

One thing I've realized during the pandemic is that NTs are actually pretty rigid. Despite the fact that a certain rigidity of thinking and need for routine are often mentioned as hallmarks of neurodivergence (most often for people on the spectrum, but it does come up occasionally for other things like ADHD, anxiety, etc), the antimask crowd is overwhelmingly NT.

Among ND people I know, the response to masks has varied. Some really like them, because they don't need to spend a ton of energy thinking about their facial expressions. Some have basically gone "I don't like them, but whatever. It is what it is." And a small few have had sensory issues they can't figure out a work around for, so they just do curbside pickup and avoid situations where a mask is needed as much as possible.

And when you think about it, it's not very surprising. ND people, whatever our individual issues, are pretty used to having to move through a world not designed for us. Why would a pandemic be any different?

Meanwhile, we got to witness NTs having meltdowns because they couldn't get a haircut. The pandemic had interrupted their routine, and they couldn't handle it. For the first time, they were living in a world that wasn't designed around their desires.

So apparently rigidity and a need for routine aren't a ND thing, so much as what happens when human beings live in a society that isn't designed around their preferences.
