Okay, in a universe where Sanji basically didn't even get to meet Judge (like D! Sora au), he would be Oísin. But I was thinking about names for his siblings, so here I am and this is what I thought:

Reiju = Lune (moon) or Rosier (rose bush)

Ichiji = Kaze (wind) or Pluie (rain)

Niji = Ciel (sky) or Kumo (clouds)

Yonji = Shima (island) or Mori (forest)

I tried to make all their names relating to nature or the universe, since Oísin is pretty much like Ocean.

So good to see you! I truly love this idea and Oísin is Irish for "fawn" or "little deer" and I truly believe that Sora is Irish and has an Irish accent and that Irish is a Northern dialect-yes I know French is like the go to for Sanji but THINK ABOUT IT. Especially in the soulmate au which we will jump back to and also I'm going to give you a slight lore dump that I have for Sora in general that I'm using for her background in general but is going to come in heavily in the sequel to North Blue Language and the Soulmate AU and Skylar is her maiden name in both of these so still pertaining to your ask as well. Not Irish but also just a very good name for this lovely woman.

Sora hails from the Horizon Kingdom at the top of the North Blue and she is the youngest child, the one that will be married off for alliances and security. It's a relatively peaceful kingdom where it's cold and lights dance across the sky year round and one of the more relatively peaceful kingdoms, small and so far away from the others it's seen as a hassle to get there more often than not. It's cold but it's lush and it rains and the kingdom is lively. Think Ireland if it stayed the same but moved to the arctic circle basically. It's small compared to other kingdoms but they try to keep to themselves and keep their people happy as much as they can. The family is tight knit but even still Sora is a pawn for the safety of her kingdom and she accepted that at a relatively young age.

So let's start with D! Sora where Sora fucking leaves and starts a crew and becomes an Emperor of the sea where Sanji is no longer Sanji he's Oísin and his siblings all have new names and Reiju doesn't remember being Reiju. Sora's crew all speak a variety of Northern languages and dialects so the names come from everywhere in the sea and it is touching. 10/10 love Rosier and you know the crew just started calling Reiju that because of she's their little flower garden basically, she's absolutely doted on and spoiled, even after all her brothers come along. Kaze is the oldest boy, then Ciel, Oísin, and lastly Mori. The names blend more into the actual world but they all still have the curled brows, all of the kids are blond too. So everything that happens in the D AU is 10,000x funnier when Zeff realizes that Oísin is that Oísin he's losing it. He is not okay, and when the Strawhats find out he's Skylar D. Oísin it's funnier. The chaos is monstrous.

In the Soulmate AU though imagine Mihawk looking at his pink haired daughter and calling her Rosier as they sail away from Germa and Reiju just gets used to the man calling her that, she's pink like some of the rose bushes on Kuriagana and Mihawk will put fresh ones in her room all the time and absolutely dotes on her and calls her his little flower garden as he braids other flowers into her hair. Mihawk has picked up several languages thanks to his travels so they pick the names for the boys and it's lovely, it's great. Shanks thinks Kaze should have been named something to do with fire or blood because thematically the others kind of match their hair and Mihawk threatens him because Sora insisted on the name and Shanks promptly shuts the fuck up. Zoro and Perona being there during the time skip really fucks with them and Zoro now partially understands like three more languages than he did.

Anon, thank you for this question because it made us sit down and actually look through the albums of my old art and write a list LOL We thought it’d take like 30 minutes tops + 10 minutes to write all of this down, but it took 2+ hours yikes… So sorry, no other replies today :(

Being a child of a royal family with no social skills sucks.

As a son/daughter of the royal family, people think you will have social skills right? Well, not really. You were as the noblemen and women called you, a weird type of a royal child. Your social skills issues are the main reason for your trauma involving your ex friend and the reason why you were so lonely at balls. People tend to avoid you because of it as they claim that you are too boring to talk. But your mother and father are supportive yes but at this point, you really blamed it on your ex-friend. “My child, we are having another ball tonight.” Your mother spoke to you through the door. Your parents host balls every few years which is honestly surprising since the royal families you see are nothing but party animals. As a little child, you used to hate it to the bone but you grew out of it growing up. After a moment of silence, you spoke in a soft tone that anyone will miss at first. “Yes mother. Should I get ready?” Your mother is shocked but she giggles. “No, dear. You have plenty of time until the ball. So there is no need to rush.” Your mother then walked away from your bedroom door as you waited until the footsteps had faded. You stroll from behind a divider from your seating spot and the door to your bedroom door. You take a glance towards your divider for a bit. The combination of dark blue, black and gold is a good mixture but you can not help but hate it since it reminds you of how your trauma affected your skills of speaking with others. 

Meanwhile, you had to take your eyes off your divider to start the normal boring day as a royal son/daughter. You read, drink tea, take walks in the garden. It is honestly so..unexciting and plain. Due to you not having friends and your social skills, you felt crying in anger and went after your so-called friend who traumatized you. But you let it go as they are dead to you. Now you spoke so polite and formal to your parents and head maid but to others? You were so silent and you have that uninterested look on your face that makes it hard for you to trust others. You later shake your head and take a stroll to your room as the ball starts somewhere late in the afternoon, you need to be ready and probably find someone to talk to or..even connect with. You always hated getting dressed by other people instead of your maids but you suck it up and get on with it. “Child.” Your mother called out to you, wearing her best dress for this ball. “The Landau Family will be coming to this ball.” She looks at you in concern as she had seen this look before: that blank expression that drives others away..but she can’t blame you. “Will you,” she hesitated to finish her question. “Be alright for this ball?” You can look at your mother with a soft expression. “I..I do not know but..we will see mother.” Your mother nodded her head, not bothered to say anymore. “Of course, child. Come. Your father is waiting for us at the entrance of the ball.”

‘This ball..is intriguing.’ You think to yourself as you stand near the window from the crowds of noblemen and women. ‘They are avoiding me as always.’ You sighed before you caught a glimpse of someone advancing towards you. Your eyes slowly widen in shock at the beauty of this man in front of you. Blond hair that reaches his neck, blue eyes that makes you want to get lost in them. “Excuse me, sir/ma’am. I can not help but notice that you are standing here alone. May I ask what is wrong? If you want to, of course.” He spoke to you in that polite tone that makes your heart flutter. You felt nervous to talk to him but you knew that you had to speak. ‘You cannot keep being quiet forever, [name].’ You thought to yourself. ‘You had to speak.’ You looked up at the gentleman in front of you and spoke. “I do not feel comfortable talking about it.” You immediately feel eyes all turn towards you as if they haven’t heard you speak at all. The gentleman only nodded his head. “I understand. My name is Gepard Landau, son of the Landau family.” The gentleman now named Gepard introduced himself to you. “[First name] [last name]. You have heard of my family so I have no need to say anything more.” You spoke as you tried to see any ill-intentions from Gepard but you were shocked as there is none. “This ball bores me..can we take a walk to the garden and talk there?” You asked Gepard, nervous for this as this is your first actually talking to someone yet you felt excited because you want to get to know him first. 

To say that you were surprised that Gepard accepted your offer is understatement. You are expecting him to reject your offer but instead he did an exact opposite. You and Gepard were walking in the garden in awkward yet peaceful silence but you had no idea what to talk to him about. But you decided to ask him this question. “Have you heard rumors about me?” Gepard takes a glance at you from the corner of his eyes. “Yes I have. But those rumors are unnecessary. I do not like rumors nor support them. Whoever spreads them has not taken the time to get to know you.” He spoke with his heavenly voice that makes your heart want to run in a marathon. ‘His voice…is pleasant to listen to. His voice is like a melody being played over a crowd of unpleasantries. A melody..that is so foreign to me but sounds so..heavenly.’ You think to yourself as you look at Gepard. “Nobody..don’t want to get along with me due to my lack of social skills and trust issues.” You were correct. You have a hard time working with others and you never get social cues plus you had said words that never meant to hurt anyone but how you said proves otherwise. You were pretty much a weird one in the noble’s eyes. You hate it. You hate it so much that you just want to scream, to shout in pure anger but you do not want to disappoint your parents with your emotions as your trauma is enough trouble for them.

You and Gepard hang out even after the ball and he was patient with your lack of social skills but he witnessed that you are trying to get better social skills and this man teaches you every single time you two hang out. “[Name],” Gepard called out to you when you were reading a book. “Would you like to come with me to the garden?” You take your eyes from your book as you are confused. “May I ask for what?” Gepard just smiled and you just felt screaming into the pillow of how cute Gepard is when he smiles like that however you brush those foolish thoughts off into a deep part of your mind as you stand from your chair. “If you are willing to get to know me, Gepard,” you turn to face him. “Be prepared for it.” You give Gepard a nod with a smirk on your face. 

Gepard was not prepared to learn more about you even after the ball days ago. He had heard rumors of a son/daughter of a royal family who is so cold that nobody wants to befriend them. The man is suspicious of many things but he is not the type to jump into actions without proper thinking. So he takes the chance to see this ‘cold weirdo pest’ that he heard from so many people. But when he got to the ball, his eyes landed on you from the other side of the ball. In his eyes, you are beautiful. Social skills or not. There are a lot of ways to get to know someone but he wanted to make sure that you are comfortable with him first. He noticed that your eyes observed him closer for any ill-intentions but when you found out that he did not have any of it. You were a bit hesitant to show the carefree and extrovert side that you were so careful to hide from others. But Gepard was very patient with you, he knows what it feels to not trust others due to the tricks of hiding one’s own intentions but he never left your side. 

Your mother and father were surprised at the sight of you and Gepard hanging out more often but they were so happy that your mother had to hide her tears from being seen by other servants. Your father, who was known as a cold and stern man in the public eye, is smiling so warmly that his child has found someone who never abandoned you due to your flaws. Gepard was often questioned by your father without your knowledge. “You have been hanging out with my son/daughter lately, yes?” Gepard took his eyes from his tea to face your father in surprise and nodded, confirming it. “Yes sir. I have been hanging out with your child.” Your father only hummed and took a sip of his tea. “I see. Now, you know that they have flaws that the other noblemen and women find rude or un-noble like.” He stared at Gepard with a stern look on his face. “I would like to ask you two questions. What do you think of my child and would you be their side even in their darkest moments?”

Gepard was taken aback by the questions of your fathers but he knew to be honest about his words as lies can hurt anyone no matter how innocent it seems. Lying is lying and he never likes lying his words to anyone. “Your child..is wonderful. They are so careful with their words and actions..they take my teachings of social cues to heart. They were..such an angel in this cruel society where you had to pretend that you are fine. For that second question.” Gepard took a minute to think. You were perfect in his eyes even with your flaws and..he can’t imagine a life without you. “I would be their side..even in their darkest moments. All I see..” the blond haired man closed his eyes. “Is a beautiful person..with flaws that make me smile in glee. They are truly a sight to see and I love hanging out with them.” Your father was oddly silent, closing his eyes for what seems like years but then he spoke. “You are the first one…who accepts my son/daughter for who they are. Their flaws..their trauma that vile fiend that once their friend put into their soul.” He opened his eyes. “All I ever wanted to see my son/daughter smile so carelessly when there is nothing to do. I want them to see that even when there is darkness, there is also light. Thank you for making them truly happy.”

Meanwhile at the garden stood you and your mother as it was time for a private walk and talk while you are hella nervous since it is your mother, who was known for her strict and cold nature in the public eye but you know deep down..she and your father shows you that they care for you in many ways without invading your personal sanctuary which is your own bedroom. “Mother..what do you want to talk about?” You ask your mother who is carrying an umbrella over her head. She glances at you from the corner of her eyes and smiles lightly. “A little birdie told me that you and Gepard have been spending time together lately. It is very rare to see you so happy after.” She didn’t say anything about that incident but you knew that her and your father do not like to talk about that day as it will only anger them. “So, my child.” She spoke after a moment of silence. “What about Gepard makes you so happy?” 

You were waiting for this moment to tell your mother how you feel about Gepard. “Mother. He is so handsome. His voice is so welcome to listen to even when he and I are sitting near the ocean or the town’s fountain. He is such a gentleman as he never lets me do anything while he is around. He even defended me from others..he always told me that I do not have to change to please others. His blonde hair is so silky to the touch and his eyes. Such blue eyes..that I feel myself drowning in them just staring in them. He is such a sweetheart and he has that adorable smile that makes my heart scream out in pure cuteness overload.” Your mother laughs softly at this. “It seems that you have feelings for Gepard, no?” You felt embarrassed that your mother out of all the people in your palace household have caught your feelings for the gentleman prince of the Landau Family, Gepard Landau. “I..” You look at your feet, flustered and shy at the same time. “Yes..Yes I do. But will he accept my feelings?” Your mother’s eyes soften to see your expression. 

“Well, think about it. What did Gepard’s actions show you whenever you two hangout?” Your mother asks you, trying to make you see based on actions. That question makes you think back all the times you and Gepard hang out from your households. You notice that Gepard’s eyes is always on you. The way he holds your hand even in crowded areas in a gentle manner as if he doesn't want to hurt you. The way his smile turns warm and lovingly whenever you see something you like or how you awed at something cute. How Gepard stood in front of you to protect you from harm and even defended you by saying words that made you see the light again. But the last thing that makes you blush a deep shade of red is: the meaning behind his words and actions. He always told you to never change to please others means you are unique so do not change anything about yourself. The red rose he always has with him..the meaning of a red rose means passion and a red rose is a gift primarily given by a love interest, symbolizing a martial or romantic relationship.

“He..”You were silent as your mother hugged you in a motherly hug. “My beautiful child..you deserve to be happy. Gepard makes you feel wonderful and special in his eyes. As long as he treats you right, your father and I accept him with open arms.” You heard your mother’s voice begin to tremble as you realized that she was crying. “You deserve happiness and love..and you two..will be the most beautiful couple ever. All we wanted..to see that carefree smile on your face and be clouded by the trauma that haunted you.” Your eyes slowly widen in shock without realizing that you were crying. You always wanted to cry to your mother like old times when you held her while crying as a traumatic little kid and now..you felt relief when you finally cried in your mother’s arms. You let out all your pain as she comforts you while crying too as nobody is around to see you two crying. Your father just watches the scene from his office window alone, smiling and also crying as well. The old man felt his heart filled with warmth as if he saw the small little carefree menace that is his son/daughter hidden deep within you. “Gepard Landau..you have my permission to date my son/daughter as you show them..that you love them..for who they are.”

Gepard sneezed a bit when he got back home in the Landau Household when he felt like someone was talking about him. He then smiles to himself as he thinks about you. You have been the love of his life, his sunshine, his wounded angel..his crush. He thinks about confessing his love to you and all the possibilities it will have. He does not want to let you go, not when he feels his heart race around you like crazy. He wanted you to be his lover and later decided to confess his feelings to you tomorrow as he had one chance to do this..or everything will crumble down around him. The next day, you were sipping tea while eating the remains of your sweets when your personal maid knocked on the door to your room. “Come on in, Melissa.” You spoke as Melissa walk in with a silver letter tray with a single envelope. 

“Good morning,sir/Lady [name]. You have a letter.” She spoke to you in a warm voice. “It is from the Landau Family son.” She watch in amusement as you quickly snatch the letter from the tray and read it. “He invited me to come to his family garden alone.” Your eyes soften in warmth and love. “Wear the best suit/dress and brings a red rose.” Melissa squeals when she knows the meaning of the letter but she doesn't say anything when you ask her what it means. “Come on, my sir/lady. We have to get you ready to meet His highness Gepard Landau.” You only sighed as you went through the process of getting dress for a private meeting with the man of your dreams. You wear the suit/dress of your two favorite colors and in your hand is a red rose, freshly picked from the garden of red roses near your bedroom window. Melisaa basically gently dragged you to your ride which is your family’s carriage. “Have fun there, my sir/lady!” Melissa smile at you when you are being help up in the carriage. “Why is she so happy about?” You asked yourself but you felt something good will happen. 

When you arrived at the Landau Household, you were greeted with Gepard’s knight who led you to the garden. The garden is beautiful with all kinds of flowers and decorations of the bushes, shrubs and hedges. For the "in go, to the public Kiyama is Kira Hiroto, to his friends and family, hes Kiyama Tatsuya" hc, the reason why they found out his name is Tatsuya is because of Touko. No one knows how she found out, all they know is that one day during summer she appeared, saw Kiyama and went "HEY TATSUYA!" And watched him panic,

Inazuma Japan noticed that Kiyama and Mido sometimes tend to not answer them whenever they say their names, so they would say their alien names. When the two do reply by their alien names, they would yell "WRONG TRY AGAIN!" bc they are Not Gran and Reize anymore and they have to learn to not reply to those names

As for "The reason why InaJap was so nice to kimido was because of Dark Emperors" hc, it sorta came to me out of the blue while rewatching s3, Mido and Kaze are good freinds despite aliea and my hc is that is the reason why everyone warmed up to them – if DE didn't happen, Kaze wouldn't feel like he understood what Reize had to go through ans that feeling of inadequicy that followed them, if this makes any sense. Ehm. Here's some of Shuugo and Kariya actually why not, mostly shuugo because... he's my favourite.

The whole "they're complete opposites of each other" bit is mostly based on my other headcanons, but also from Shuugo's recruitment needs + kariya's canon behaviour. (shuugo's talks for the both of them, and kariya in turn, insults people for fun)

Shuugo likes to fist-fight people btw, he's nice and calm, but he has anger issues, and when someone pisses him off bad he'd start fist-fighting people, which is pretty often. (Kariya in turn, gaslight people. for fun. like father like son, I guess?)

Nagumo taught both Shuugo and Kariya curse words.

Shuugo was the one who came up with the idea of Masaki transferring to Raimon (the moment he joined the soccer club, shuugo went through all five stages of grief at once)

oh yeah kariya and shuugo have a sibling-like relationship. idk if you can tell from all the previous hcs.

literally no one knew that they know each other, so one day during the match of raimon 1gun vs raimon 2gun in s1 of go, they started talking to each other post-match and everyone was just "????? since when ???" and the revelation that kariya is an orphan and shuugo knows him because his cousin(??) is the "owner" of the orphanage opened,

also because of kariya and shuugo knowing each other, the two of them (along with ichino and aoyama!) sorta become the bridge between raimon 1gun and raimon 2gun! they have a lot more joint practises and team 2 are able to play in official/friendly matches!

Also fun fact, Shuugo was supposed to have a character arc similar to Hikaru's when he was first introduced in the sequel for go s1, aka, Chrono Stone, but as we can see that never happened. Anyways, i totally do NOT have a whole ass plot and am writing a fic of this for myself. nope, Nuh-uh.

Oh hey so here's a thing that we never really got proper follow up on, and in fact if anything some late additions to canon just kind of... not quite "contradict" the implicit world building but kind of just exist without addressing the existing hooks?(i hope that makes sense) I'm talking around the subject... I mean the dual zanpakutou and what that actually seems to say about their wielders and how Ichigo absolutely does not fulfill that same criteria with his bullshit final zanpakutou, either played straight or as a subversion.

I have sort of talked about the zanpakutou names themselves but I didn't really stray into the territory of character analysis too much. Kyroraku and Ukitake both have implicit dual personas that are reflected in their swords, at least at first. And Ichigo pretty distinctly doesn't, not in the same way at least, although there is sort of a caveat to that, but I'm already getting ahead of myself...

I'll start with Kyouraku since his is probably the least consequential, and the most overtly addressed... On the one hand Katen[花天] probably comes from the more specific Chinese phrase Huā tiānnǚ[花天女], I specify because it has much more concrete artistic associations than [花天] does, either in Chinese or Japanese, and is a minor figure of Chinese celestial bureaucracy often depicted as a beautiful young woman flying thru the heavens scattering flower petals from a bouquet or basket of flowers. The garden she tends is comprised of all the most beautiful and exotic flowers, posses magical qualities such that the fruits of her garden can grant immorality or magical powers, and the petals she scatters all over the world bring happiness and good fortune.

Clearly her evocation here is an allusion to Kyoruaku's outward demeanor as a kind of pampered, decedent lover of good drink, music/poetry, and women. There are a few things in his name that all point to this as well, beyond just his visual design: Kyoraku[京楽] reading as "(Imperial)Capitol + Music/pleasure/comfort" and Shunsui[春水] as "Spring(the season) + Water," the associations with spring somewhat implicitly involving cherry blossoms, making the phrase sort of analogous to "rose water" or "sweet water."

And then Kyoukotsu[狂骨] is a yokai that takes the form of a skeletal old man that haunts the bucket of an abandoned well. It's got some weird uncertain regional etymologies that sort of suggest it could be any of a number of euphemisms, but I'm not certain which if any are relevant to this. There is one i stumbled into that, given the casual nature of all this, i did not think to record like a citation as i didnt think it'd be so hard to track down again... that said it was used as a kind of slang towards a crazy person or a raucous drunk. I don't want to lean too heavily on that when I can't corroborate it, but it did feel like it made a lot of sense: you drink(from a well) something you shouldn't(i.e. cursed) and it makes you violent and/or crazy.

And more over, their release call is,

Hanakaze midarete Kashin naki, Tenpuu midarete Tenma warau

[花風紊れて花神啼き, 天風紊れて天魔嗤う]

"FlowerWind in disarray FlowerSpirit(s) cry, HeavenWind in disarray Tenma* laughs/ridicules."

There is a distinct bit of poeticism here with Hana... ka[花... 花...] referring to "flowers," Ten... Ten[天... 天...] referring to "heaven," midarete[紊れて... 紊れて...] referring to things "in disarray," and kaze... fuu[...風, ...風] referring to "wind." And notably while there are obvious thematic links back to Katen, there's not actually much reference to Kyokotsu, apart from vague tonal implications. Still, the message seems very clear: The pleasant scent of flowers and aesthetic of petals on the wind are disrupted, flower spirits/god(s) cry/wail in pain or otherwise distress. And at the same time, in the same way, a divine wind/winds of heaven, something that is implicitly a blessing or relief, a kind of god send, is disrupted and the evil spirit Mara laughs or jeers. A good thing is spoiled and divine forces make noises of distress and malice.

This just reinforces the names' dualistic themes that suggest there is a dark side to Kyoraku's penchant for unrestrained revelry. While that could be taken a number of ways, the most surface level one would seem to suggest that for all the boisterous drinking and partying he does, he in fact has a violent abusive drunken side to him as well, past some certain point.

Mara btw is a sort of "demon" in buddhism with a lot of associated themes, not the least of which being seduction, and the derailing of one's path towards enlightenment --in Japanese in particular his name is associated with sexual temptation and masturbation, and yeah he's the penis chariot summon in SMT. He is very specifically the giant demon featured in classical art of the samsara --the cosmological wheel of reincarnation within which all living things exist. So when Mara laughs, it's not just a matter of generic evil, it's the victory of base material temptation over enlightenment. By all rights this makes it sound like Kyoraku's shikai is a matter of trading in his easygoing demeanor for a more violent and darker side.

But as we know that isn't quite how things panned out... Rather, the reveal of that very change in tone just got sorta kicked down the road a bit and became a part of his bankai rather than his shikai. But the implicit themes of the zanpakutou's name, and the zanpakutout themselves, suggests that Kyoraku has two swords because he has two truths, two inner selves rather than one: the one that is personified by heavenly flowers, and the one personified by malice and drink.

And I guess just to clarify, I find it really weird that Kubo went and canonized Masashi Kudo's zanpakutou filler arc designs that way he did, and I still sort of regard them and even their inclusion in the manga proper to be kind of non-canon? I know that's a weird bold arbitrary claim, but even as he used the designs they don't feel like they contribute at all to their own theme or shtick. Like, they were clearly designed with no insight to the shikai's actual powers, the designs are nonsensical (the swords printed on her kimono? european oujo drills on a japanese design? the frills on a kimono? the nonsense exposed midriff on kyoukotsu? it's just a mess) they aren't even named accordingly, you'd think the light tone of Katen would lend itself to the shikai's children's game theme and thus the diminutive one of the pair, and Kyoukotsu the darker themes and thus the noh and bunraku theatre thus the older of the two, splitting them between children's play and adult play. But no.

Anyway... that just being part of the set up for the fact that...

Ukitake's got a whole daoist yin-yang thing going on. His theming is a little less obvious at a glance, but pretty distinct in the broader context of things, and eventually ironically nailed down a little more firmly by Kudo's still not especially canon design work for the anime filler: The courtly heian robes the kids are put in are part of the iconic onmyoji image of daoist mystics who served the imperial court as advisors in spite of their non samurai/nobility status. The yin and yang motif is alluded to in the "twin fish" aspect of Sougyo no Kotowari[双魚理]: "Law of Pair(ed) Fish" which is itself later alluded to in the Hell Jaws Wailing/Christening oneshot. Unlike Katen Kyokotsu, there aren't two distinct facets to the sword name, and unlike Kyoraku's katana and wakizashi set, Ukitake has a single sealed katana that splits into two for shikai, all suggesting that the nature of the two fish is that they are a singular unit rather than distinct facets. This makes sense of course because the nature of yin and yang as positive and negative elements is that they are in constant struggle but balanced, and cannot exist without one another.

But the nature of the zanpakutou, again, suggests that Ukitake's soul exists as both sides of that balance, that he is is innately capable of just as much "evil" as he is good. And this underlying tone of something sinister beneath his kindly demeanor is something Kubo sort of tries to paly with but never really fully pulls the trigger on. This theme is where the Fullbringer arc's underutilized bit where Ukitake has been using the substitute badge as a means of surveillance, and where Ukitake is implicitly the one who stripped Ginjo of his powers in the first place, having also monitored him during his tenure as substitute. It implies that, like Kyoraku's two sides to his drink and revelry, Ukitake's inner truth about being an agent of cosmic balance comes in a dark and a light form.

So then there's this thing about Ichigo's stupid new zangetsu(s) where he both has two swords now like Kyoraku and Ukitake, but also doesn't because we get the janky sort of excuse that "oh they're not really two different swords one's just a sheath and their true form is one sword."

And to be fair, while I find the explicit use of that line to try and handwave... i don't know what exactly, but it definitely felt like Kubo thought he was patching up some kind of plothole when he brought it up... we technically already knew that was the case leading up to the first time he addressed it with the final getsuga thing.

In the first inner world fight, the hollow was just a part of Zangetsu that he was able to sort of produce and later reabsorb, and implicitly the opposite was true when the hollow appeared alone during the Visored training: they exist as two sides of the same coin, and can just kind of flip flop control as needed. This made sense as an expression of Ichigo's misguided struggle to deny and rid himself of his hollow --he didn't have two spirits he had one, which again we already knew, but it needed to be confirmed and addressed to cap off Ichgio's arc of self discovery.

Then Kubo tried to sort of rehash this dynamic with the whole the hollow is the sword, and Zangetsu is actually Yhwach's quincy blood just holding the hollow/shinigami side back, but it makes distinctly less sense because when Nimaiya forges the new sword(s) the two spirits show up as separate entities, one per sword. Plus the stupid retconned excuse that, oh no they weren't ever actually the same thing, the whole absorbing thing was just Yhwach actively suppressing the shinigami side. So then what does this really say about Ichigo's nature? Does he have a dualistic nature or doesn't he? Are they two facets of his inner truth, or are/were they always the same singular truth and realizing that was the entire key to self actualization and his true power?

At face value the new explanation divides his identity into shinigami and quincy, despite him having no actual functioning identity as a quincy factionally or culturally, and on a personal level he never actually does anything to reconcile this identity crisis. I know it's a long way around to just point out that it fumbles the theming a lot here, when that was fairly evident even without the context, but I guess I just wanted to bolster that. In the first place i think everyone reading at the time understood it to feel very inauthentic as a twist? like most of the developments of the late arc. Just another case of Kubo phishing around fandom chatter for stupid ideas he could play into to siphon ratings out of.

But again the bottom line being that we had precedent for Ichigo to have two swords in one of two ways: Ukitake's style of having a single identity that encompasses both the best and worst of his inner truth, or Kyoraku's suggested style in which his two facets exist in distinct and separate entities but ultimately both reflect him as truths about his nature. But Ichgio doesn't really do that. His original balance of shinigami and hollow seemed to be a satisfactory solution in the style of Ukitake's, and if he'd just had one shinigami/hollow sword and one quincy sword, that might have been acceptable in Kyouraku's style, but the flipflopping between the two by making the final form just a big sword inside a different big sword where one of the big swords is a sword, but the other sword is just a sheath to hold the first sword(???) is just this bizarre gibberish of themes and symbols.

(I've had this thing sitting in drafts for so long i forgot abotu it. and I swear I had some kind of actual conclusion I was working toward across various rewrites but i don't remember what it was anymore... anyway it's taking up space in my drafts that could be better used, so out it goes..)
