Okay, so I reread the final gambit because @1989linasversion made a post saying how there were gonna be clues about the grandest game in that book, and I think one of the biggest clues so far is David Golding

Every single person who died in the Hawthorne fire has been covered and talked about in the final gambit except for David Golding. Toby’s family is the Hawthornes, (well technically the Laughlin’s but wtv) Kaylie Rooneys family is Avery’s, Collin anders wright is Graysons family, but so far David Golding was just mentioned, but never really looked into. And as you can see, whenever jlb doesn’t really talk about a person that’s mentioned in her books, they become a big part of her future books (like for example, Jamison’s dad wasn’t mentioned in the entire trilogy but in the brothers Hawthorne he was a big part of it)

Imagine David Golding is one of the contestants family, or maybe even phone girls, and maybe that’s why they’re playing in the game. Jlb did mention in the prologue thingy for the grandest game that some contestants were there for “their own reasons”, and that it might not just be about the money. I looked through the books, and these were some parts where david is mentioned.

So all we really know about him so far is that david came from money and is similar to Toby in a way, so there’s really no way to tell if he was a good or bad person (considering the fact that tobys….. toby. and being similar to him really isnt a flex 😬) I know the clue said that there were hints in tig, but just to check I looked through the Hawthorne legacy too and found something else

So davids family was constantly donating to Camden house, and david, Collin, and Toby all went there. Again, the way they talk about david being similar to Toby and the fact that he was one of the people partying with Collin and Toby makes me think that if jlb does shine some light on him in the grandest game, then he might turn out be not a very good person. Again, there really isn’t a lot of information on david so we don’t really know whether or not this is true.

Also can anybody pls lmk anything they found out about the final gambit that might be tied to the grandest game? (If you found any 🫶)

Week 6: Jellylorum

Sara Jean Ford!Jellylorum goes with Christopher Gurr!Gus. They can be a tough watch because they bring so much sincerity and weight to the roles in regards to Gus's story. I talked a bit about this in my Gus post too, while Gus is always an elderly character, it's very clear in how they play it that Jellicle Choice or not, Gus is in his last days (in fact I'm pretty sure Christopher Gurr has said he thinks Gus died even right after the Jellicle Ball shown in the play) and they bring so much of that emotion to the scene. Jellylorum's keeping a smile on through Gus's song but her complex emotions are still so clear and she even seems close to tears at times. I adore this way of playing this storyline and it's a top-tier example of the deeper parts of Cats (it is a fun, feel-good musical about singing and dancing cats but it also has serious themes and it's always wonderful to see such sincerity brought to these parts of the story.)

On a lighter note (for a given definition of lighter) is Kayli Jamison, who is a Jellylorum I saw personally. She was a very sweetheart Jellylorum and deserves a mention because of that and because of her part in the little drama storyline that could be picked up on between Grizabella, Skimbleshanks, and Jennyanydots. This was the cast/run I've semi-jokingly referred to as "Skimbleshanks and Jennyanydots Get a Divorce: the Musical" and Jellylorum's in that story too, as she and Skimble gravitated towards each other a lot and had some very cute moments and I ended up with the perception of Skimbleshanks having growing feelings for her as his relationship with Jennyanydots breaks down for better or worse.

Litsy’s Jellicle Family Headcanons

A few disclaimers before we get into this:

These are based on my experience and opinions after seeing the tour in May 2021. I’ll include a cast list at the bottom if you’re interested. Most of these were approximately formed at the time (I recently reread my thoughts from immediately after seeing the show), but are being finalized and articulated over a year later, so some of it is a bit more recent.

Obviously I went into seeing the tour already with strong opinions and ideas from the 1998 film, so as long as those weren’t contradicted by the tour, or the tour inspired new ideas, I’ve often defaulted to my original ideas. So this is mostly to compare the two productions to each other in terms of my thoughts on the relationships between the characters.

You are not immune to backstage shenanigans.

I’m picking and choosing which “chorus cats” for featured performers are included in the canon.

I didn’t include romantic relationships unless they resulted in a child.

I’m gonna go through the 1998 headcanons pretty quickly because I’ve shared these before.

1998 film family tree headcanons:

Old Deuteronomy and Grizabella are the parents of Macavity, Munkustrap, & Rum Tum Tugger. They are former mates; she left the tribe when their sons were still young. They still resent her for it by the time of the canon Jellicle Ball.

Macavity and Demeter are the parents of Plato. Mac and Dem were never mated.

Munkustrap and Demeter are the parents of Jemima. Munk and Dem are mates. Munk is also a father figure to Plato.

Coricopat & Tantomile are twins. They have no other family in the tribe.

Exotica Wallflower is Cassandra’s mother. She is also mates with George, but George is not Cassandra’s father.

Gus is Asparagus’s father.

Asparagus and Jellylorum are the parents of Tumblebrutus, Etcetera, & Pouncival, who are littermates. Asparagus and Jelly are mates.

Jennyanydots is the mother of Bombalurina.

Skimbleshanks’s deceased sister was the mother of Mungojerrie & Rumpleteazer, who are littermates. He took them in when their mother died, as their father is unknown.

Skimble and Jenny are the adoptive parents of Mistoffelees and biological parents of Electra. Skimble and Jenny are mates.

Jellicles with no blood/familial relationships in the tribe: Alonzo, Bustopher Jones, Victoria.

2021 tourverse/revivalverse family tree headcanons:

Kayli played Jellylorum in the Cats National Tour from the relaunch in September 2021 to the conclusion of the first season on June 26th, 2022.

Where is she now? / Has she done anything else?

If she has been in any productions since her departure, she has not posted about it. It’s worth acknowledging that Kayli is not active on social media like some of her former castmates.
