a/n: a little father's day fic. inspired by the popular hc that kendall and katie's dad was a hockey player, and that him and mama knight are divorced/separated + the following prompt: A telling B stories about the time B was still a baby/before B was born. title from throwing in the towel from the outsiders musical!

“What did our old house look like?” Katie asks. Kendall turns to look at her, his brow furrowed. “It was a house. Why?” 

His sister is sitting by the Palm Woods pool, her hair falling over her shoulders, still damp from her swim earlier. She looks older now, slightly less baby faced, and she’s taller. 

She’s grown into her lanky limbs, and the smile she inherited from their dad. Sometimes, he wonders what else she inherited.

If she inherited Dad’s anger like he did. If her love of money is a result of growing up without it. It scares him sometimes, to think about it.

“I don’t remember it.” He stares at her confused. It hasn’t been that long since they moved out to Los Angeles. 

“The house in Duluth?” He asks, and she shakes her head. “No. The one in St. Paul. The one we lived in before Dad…. before Dad left.” 

Neither of them speak for a moment. 

Kendall sighs, motioning for Katie to come sit beside him on the cabana chairs. She sits beside him, picking at a loose thread on her bikini bottoms. 

“It was a small house. Felt a lot smaller when Dad was around. Mom got it as a graduation gift from her parents - it was her childhood home. Dad didn’t like that he had no control over what she did with it.” 

Katie nods, and Kendall continues. “It was the main thing they fought over. You probably don’t remember, but when Dad wasn't on the road, he would sleep in a hotel a lot. He didn't want to be in the house."

Katie hums. "That's dumb."

"It was." Kendall mutters, shrugging. "He did a lot of dumb things. I'm sure Mom did too. But I don't know... At least her dumb choices kept her around. His caused them to break up."

"Is it bad that I miss him?" She asks, and Kendall pauses, biting the inside of his cheek. "No. I miss him too. I miss him teaching me Fast Car. I miss going to Minnesota North Stars games and watching him play. I miss him and Mom dancing in the living room."

"I don't remember any of that," Katie says, with a small pout on her face." Kendall gently brushes a loose hair off her face. "I just remember them fighting, and you singing You Are My Sunshine to me so I could fall asleep."

Kendall nods. "Yeah, I started doing that so you wouldn't hear them. It was the song I knew best on guitar." Katie hums, shifting closer to her brother. She looks up at him, and loops her arm around his waist in a side hug.

“I never thanked you for that by the way. For staying up with me. For taking me to the hockey rink so I wasn’t home alone. For being there when Mom couldn’t be.”

“It’s nothing.” Kendall says. “It’s what any good big brother would do.”

Katie smiles at him, her bangs falling into her face. “No, it’s what my big brother did. And he’s pretty great for it.”

He smiles down at her before kissing her forehead. “Thanks kid.”

“You’re welcome.”

Psychosis runs in the Novak family. At least that’s what his father’s been trying to convince Felix of ever since the day his mother was sent away following her hysterical claims of seeing a woman in their house that no one else could see.

Except … Felix is positive he saw her too.

Even more certain that he spoke to her.

Maybe not in words, but through his Ouija board.

Years have come and gone since then, and though Felix hasn’t yet been able to prove his mother’s sanity, he has seen his fair share of ghosts and monsters, of creatures both evil and benign, and he’s not given up looking for the truth.

Casper ‘Cas’ Nguyen

Ghosts don’t exist, Cas is as sure of that as he is the insomnia that plagues him.

That is, until he meets eccentric and curious Felix, a man insistent that this insomnia Cas suffers from might in fact be the cause of a ghost not only haunting his apartment but also sharing some sort of deeper connection that is much too extreme for Cas to grasp.

Even in the face of proof that this ghost, and others like it, might indeed exist, Cas remains skeptical.

Even after years following Felix prove the existence of the paranormal on film, Cas remains skeptical.

Because there has to be another explanation … right?

Croix Harvoth

Croix was once a kinder and gentler person, but ghosts ruined that for him.

A near-death experience during an attempt to bring his former best friend’s girlfriend back to life has left him haunted. Literally. To the point he can’t sleep most days because the ghosts in his occult shop / apartment won’t shut the fuck up.

Like he owes them something, they come to him seeking help, seeking guidance to the next stage of their lives … or lack thereof … and no matter what he does, he can’t seem to get rid of them.

It’s turned him into an asshole of a hermit who avoids the living as often as he can … which isn’t easy when you run a business.

Someone’s got to pay the bills, though, and his cat, Jackass, will starve without her damned cat food, so what’s a guy going to do?

Atticus Flood

Some might say he is too giving, too gentle, too eager to help, and they would be right.

Atticus can heal the ailments of others, from minor wounds to major ones, from simple sorrows to the deepest mental aches, but in turn, it takes a part of him, too.

His hair is losing its color, drained from its deep black roots to a haunting white like a spider’s thread. His nails have taken on a similar fate, but his eyes still hold some of the life still lingering in him.

Taking it too much further might mean the end for him, but Atticus isn’t sure he can say no.

Especially not when he meets Croix and knows he might be the only thing that can save him from his demons.

Katy Lovelace

Everyone needs a friend acquainted in witchcraft, though Felix might have been skeptical when they first met. Which is saying something, considering all of his out-there beliefs … but this was different. This was putting his best friend in the hands of a stranger, inexperienced in the ways of magic, no one quite knowing what risks they might face.

Now, though, she’s a go-to friend for advice on crystals and spells, and the occasional bath time essential oil recommendations.

(don't worry, i'm confused too. let's just say it's 13 because lucky thirteen, no?)

total word count: according to AO3, it's 209,660 (pause for me to whisper, jesus christ). that's not quite accurate, though, because it doesn't include the tumblr fic word counts - so the most true reflection is probably that it's somewhere around 216000 words. which... yeah. oh my god, i am insane. (thank you, piarles! 🙏❤️)

what’s your own favorite creation of the year: OOOH, this is a difficult one!! (don't ask me to choose between my children, etc etc.) but if i really have to pick just one... probably my dragon riders AU? i was rereading it again the other day, and just... you know what? I LOVE IT. the worldbuilding, the arranged marriage trope, the idiots in love/pining... it has everything i love to read & write about, tbh <333

do you have any fandom goals for the new year: oh my god, do i EVER. i've actually had a little "fandom new year's resolutions: 2024 version" post sitting in my drafts for a good long while now, so i'm going to link that here to hold myself even more accountable. let's do this, baby.

most popular creation of the year: not very surprisingly, it's my 2023 kisses fic, AKA your lips my lips (apocalypse). this is... my longest WIP to date, yup. 10 chapters down, 23 to go. personally, there was something VERY satisfying about processing each race by writing a smutty/kissy chapter about it 🤭 and apparently, the f1 rpf readership agreed with me about that! much obliged. also, god, i love you all so much. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL THE SUPPORT 😭❤️❤️

under-appreciated creation of the year: ough! this is also a hard one, because i don't want to seem ungrateful for what has frankly been an AMAZING year full of an incredible amount of support. truly, my followers, my friends: you all are so, so unbelievably wonderful, and i appreciate each and every one of you ENDLESSLY. but... that's not the question. to actually give an answer: one fic that i do selfishly wish would've blown up more/reached more people is my boyband au, i want to write you a song. because of the sheer amount of time i poured into that, and also because of the extreme sentimental value it has for me in that it combines my two favourite-ever rpf fandoms... yeah. i do so wish it would've gained a little more traction than it ended up getting. BUT like i said: this is very much a selfish wish, and i am fully aware that this is quite a niche fic, in its way. still, though - if there was one fic response i could change from last year, it would be this one.

most fun thing to make: another "don't make me choose between my children" type question!! 🙈 but honestly... i think that prize would probably go to "... And My Heart Is With You," because working with Tia is always fucking INCREDIBLE, and also because this idea was just such a delight to create and write 😍❤️

most unintentionally telling thing: oh dear. probably, um... my first a/b/o fic. the thing is, i never even used to LIKE a/b/o. but my besties told me that the possessiveness-soulmatism of it all would actually work really well for me, and... they were right. let's just say, they were 1016% right.

equally though, my 2023 kisses fic? especially that chapter 8/9... yeah. uh. YEAH.

biggest surprise: the fact that i managed to add up over two HUNDRED thousand words for this fandom??? even despite two rather significant writer's block stretches, a job move and a move of house? that's... i'm incredibly proud of that, honestly. and i never could've done it without all of you, my most beloved friends-in-my-phone. thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for doing 2023 with me. here's to an even crazier, better 2024 <3333

At long last I am beginning to clean out the inbox. Thank you Katie for the hydration tip and for the asks!

(1) Do you prefer writing one-shots or multi-chaptered fics?

This is a hard one to answer. One shots (I consider anything less than 20k words a one shot because I have a problem, and I don’t think I can write real one shots😔), are easier in that they don’t take as long, and I can get the idea out, show you all my story, and get feedback relatively quickly. However, once a one shot is written, it’s written, and then it’s back the drawing board to come up with new ideas. Whereas with really long multi chapter fics, the idea keeps going, there’s always something new to think about, another “one shot” or character moment or twist to weave into the story, and I love seeing your reactions and how invested different people get into different subplots and storylines. What is frustrating about multi chapter fics is that there’s a lot of delayed gratification involved for me and for you as the reader, because I have twists and ideas in SOS that I want to show you and talk about and I can’t yet, because we’re not there yet, whereas for something like the Martina Redemption fic, it’s technically a multi chapter fic, but they’re short chapters, and I wrote it all over a long weekend. Whereas I’ve been writing SOS since January and rotating the idea for it since before I even got a tumblr so… yeah that’s over a year now dang. So I’d say multi chapter fics, with the acknowledgment that there is probably a balance to be had somewhere in between the two extremes. SOS is a lot of fun to write, but I don’t think I could commit to writing another huge multi chapter fic at the same time, whereas it’s a lot easier to balance multiple wips when they’re one shots.

5. Do you like constructive criticism?

Interesting question. About my writing or in general? For my writing I’d say yes, but so far I haven’t gotten any. Which might be a good thing, although I did say when I first started writing fic, “hey I’ve never done much or any creative writing before, so if you have any feedback on things I can improve, please let me know”, but I haven’t gotten anything yet so I guess that means I’m doing okay? At least I hope. As for criticisms of myself or my blog in general, I’d accept constructive criticism on that too, as long as it’s worded nicely and doesn’t trigger my RSD.

32. Name three of your favorite fanfic writers.

Ah, fishing for compliments I see /j /lh. But please do not make me choose so many of you are so good! I want to tag every fic author in the fandom, and yet I’m so paranoid I’ll forget just one or two people and would never forgive myself. So besides you @myfairkatiecat (obviously), I’ll say the authors whose stuff I’ve read the most recently: @sophieswundergarten (for her amazing Sticky fic I seriously cannot hype that one up enough), @phtalogreenpoison (the Reynie is Curtain’s prodigy AU is incredible), and @heyitsthatonesmolgay because I am waiting on the edge of my seat for the greatest fear AU it sounds so good (check out snippets here and here)!

71. When it comes to more complicated narratives, how do you keep track of outlines, characters, development, timeline, etc. ?

Very good question. For my longer stuff, I start with the scenes and moments I have pinned down in my head that inspired the fic, bullet point the scenes in chronological order, and then write in the details that go in between and ideas for how to get from bullet point A to bullet point B and how I can write in additional “one shots” or impactful and interesting character moments to make those transitions seem less like plot filler and more exciting and fun to read and have it add something to either the characters or the story. Then when I’ve already written part of my fic, I still try to keep track of unfinished plot threads, cliff hangers, or things I plan to explain later (e.g., What happened with Sticky’s parents? Where did Isaac and Lindsey go? What’s up with Miss. Perumal’s past?). As for the characters, I do try to take the time to flesh out minor characters, because you can do that a bit more in a novel vs. tv format, but I also try to make sure I keep the main characters interesting and don’t create an unbalanced plot. I’ve talked about this before, but an unbalanced plot happens in a lot of shows where a few characters have these big mysteries that the whole fandom is super involved in and then these other main characters either end up with filler or their character development gets backtracked and rerun because they don’t know what to do with their storylines (this was one of my season 3 worries when season 3 was gonna be a thing and you can click the link to read more if you’re curious). I try to make sure all the main characters get some focus, and I also do that by letting some characters establish themselves before I start writing about other ones. For example, in SOS, that started as mostly Curtain and his friends, I establish a sense for their dynamic, and then Nicholas and his friends came into the story, and I’m slowly bringing more focus on Rhonda and Number Two, and as I’m going into season 2 I plan to write a lot more with Number Two especially, because of all the time she spends with Curtain and Nicholas in the compound.

Jeff the killer

Not many people know the true origin of the original Jeff the Killer image. Many people believe it was a photoshopped picture of a woman named "Katy Robinson", who allegedly committed suicide due to excessive cyberbullying after visiting 4Chan's /b/ board around the year 2008, and it was believed for several years that the picture of the girl was apparently the now famous Jeff the Killer image. However, this claim is entirely false and has been debunked numerous times, as there are no records of it actually happening. The Jeff image has been seen in places which date to 2005. It has been seen in a Japanese video published on YouTube on 2 August 2007 entitled "NNN臨時放送", which is apparently for a horror film project entitled Victims of Tomorrow or something to that effect, wherein a series of names and ages are listed. After Jeff's face appears for a split second, there is text that says "good night", which might be a precursor to "go to sleep". The earliest confirmed sighting of the image was on 16 November 2005, on a Japanese message board named pya.cc along with another image that Sesseur also posted, where he claimed that the alternate version was his original design concept. Sesseur's earliest known internet presence was 14 August 2008 where he made a Newgrounds account called "killerjeff" where he acted as if he were Jeff. The original Jeff the Killer video was uploaded on 3 November 2008.

The origins of the image and the subject it portrays are still unknown, as well as how it connects to Japan's internet culture. The most likely story is one that is unverifiable. In this version of the story posited by a few /b/ users, the photograph is of a woman whose identity is currently unknown (although it is speculated that her name is Victoria). She streamed on the now defunct website Stickam in 2005 and used /b/ as a means of promoting herself after the SomethingAwful forums started to become obsolete. One user took a screenshot of her face and posted it, acting as if they were her, with the caption: "Am I pretty?" In a successive series of images photoshopped by different users, one said in response: "now you are." After finding out about this series of events, the woman stopped streaming and vanished.

Three images of Jeff are nowadays generally accepted as being from the thread if it did occur: the famous one, the "alternate version" as Sesseur claimed it was, and a much more realistic although lower-resolution version building off the most famous version.

books I read in 2023

Threw together a list of books I read this year plus brief thoughts about them Just Because.

The Marsh King's Daughter by Karen Dionne - I was so, so ready to like this book and then like one chapter in suddenly got hit with the reveal that the backstory to it is the racist trope of "big scary Native man kidnaps a pure, virginal white girl to be his wife." So....fuck that shit.

So Many Beginnings by Bethany C. Morrow - Heck yes. Excellent book. It's a retelling of Little Women set in the Roanoke Freedmen's Colony. The author leans into how aro-coded Jo is. Also Beth lives.

Renegades by Marissa Meyer - Yeah, I didn't finish this one. I got so bored.

Common Bonds: A Speculative Aromantic Anthology ed. by Claudie Arseneault, C.T. Callahan, B.R. Sanders, and RoAnna Sylver - I mean it's an anthology, so some of the stories just did not work for me, but I am ecstatic over the concept alone and most of it was amazing.

The Companion by Katie Alender - Creepy as shit in the best possible way. My one complaint is that after 200 pages without a hint of romance, suddenly a character showed up who was so obviously meant to be the main character's love interest and that part was exhausting. Otherwise excellent, amazing, chilling as hell, and you know I love me some abuse narratives.

All These Bodies by Kendare Blake - I wanted to like this one so bad and it's not that I didn't like it, but it was just kinda...mostly okay? I felt like I was supposed to be creeped out and scared and tbh I should have been because there's some pretty disturbing shit in this book but all just fell so flat.

Sounds Fake But Okay: An Asexual and Aromantic Perspective on Love, Relationships, Sex, and Pretty Much Everything Else by Sarah Costello and Kayla Kaszyca - Bad. Just bad. Oh my g-d this book was so bad and irritating and just...if you want to learn more about aspec people or think you might be aspec yourself, please read literally anything else. I won't go into detail because I wrote a whole post about it here, but just...bad.

Ace and Aro Journeys: A Guide to Embracing Your Aromantic or Asexual Identity by The Ace and Aro Advocacy Project - So, this was definitely better than Sounds Fake But Okay overall, but there is a thread of deep discomfort with the existence of sex-repulsed and romance-repulsed aspecs that keeps popping up throughout the book. It is pretty clear that at least one of the authors (and probably more than one since there were several and apparently no one raised a strong enough objection to get any of this shit scrapped or rewritten) really Does Not Like sex-repulsed and romance-repulsed people.

The Wicked Remain by Laura Pohl - Second part of a duology, and the first book was definitely better. I low-key suspect that this book might have just been Once Upon A Time fanfiction with the serial numbers filed off. That said, I am always here for queerplatonic relationship rep and stories where the Cinderella character ends up single.

Song of the Lioness quartet by Tamora Pierce - Series of four books, but I'm putting all of them together here because a) my thoughts are kinda the same and b) this post is already too long. I'm not gonna say much because I have a whole post about this series in my drafts already so I'll just leave it with yeah my nostalgia for these books has worn off quite a bit.

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo - This was another reread and yeah it still holds up just as good as the first time I read it. Literally this is one of my favorite books.

The Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo - Another reread. Excellent. Love a sequel that's just as good as the first one. Also one of my favorite books.

King of Scars by Leigh Bardugo - Yeah I was on a rereading spree this year. This one is also so damn good.

Rule of Wolves by Leigh Bardugo - Last Grishaverse book on the list, I promise. So good. Nina went completely off the rails in this one and I love every second of it. Really everyone went off the rails a little bit but Nina most of all.

The Pomegranate Gate by Ariel Kaplan - I have a post about this one here so I won't say too much in this post but g-d I love how unapologetically Jewish this book is. No stopping to explain things to any goyim who might be reading. No coddling goyishe feelings while portraying antisemitism. This book is for Jews and that's beautiful.

Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson - Yet another reread. Actually, genuinely accurate portrayal of how PTSD triggers work. First sign of healing not being a romantic relationship but being the main character telling a shitty friend to fuck off. Literally the only thing stopping me from wholeheartedly shouting "I love this book so much" is that there's a random use of the r-word because this book is from the 90s and back then it was basically illegal to publish fiction about teenagers without having your characters use that word.

We're Not Broken: Changing the Autism Conversation by Eric Garcia - So I've got mixed feelings about it but ultimately I'd say this book is a net positive. Definitely recommend it for nonautistic people and for autistic people whose only exposure to the autistic community is through spaces like tumblr. Just don't have this be the only book you read about autistic people, you know?

SERVER PREMISE/STORY

Three months after the events of Pokémon Violet, life has returned to normal. School is in session, the league is back to work and all the residents of Paldea have returned to normal life. Things are going well until sightings of strange robotic Pokémon start pouring in. At first, the places were localized to areas and towns around the crater, but soon enough, the problem had spread to all corners of Paldea.

Top Champion Geeta sent out a call for assistance from all corners of the Pokémon World, calling for scientists, professors, and trainers alike to make way to Paldea and lend a hand. With the influx of new and interesting people, the paradox Pokémon running amuck, and Paldean residents dealing with all the changes happening there are sure to be shenanigans in store for all.

Johnny B. Gone

For a number of days, Jo-baddie Johnny has been seen spending more time than usual in Desertia town. However, at some point during the week, he left without warning, much to the dismay of a certain someone. Reportedly, Johnny had been called upon to bail someone else out of some sort of situation. It is assumed that Space player Joey was involved, but this has yet to be confirmed.

Gaming Club!

Earlier this week, after a lengthy conversation about DS games with Brae Emit, Heir of Hope Hazel Careon established the public Desertia Gaming Club memo, with the first game on the club list being Nintendogs+Cats. However, because such a game is difficult to obtain by legitimate means, Rogue of Heart Charles has decided to make a list of games to play that would be far more accessible to club members. That being said, the club is accepting new members and game recommendations.

New quest on the horizon!

Just a day or two ago, communications with the Odd Squad has resumed. Apparently they had been spending quite a few months staying in Ironways, staying out of trouble and generally taking a break from the adventuring grind. However, a recent development has prompted them to take on a request to take out a dungeon core in Phandalin. It is unknown when they will depart from the Clockwork City, but it is likely to be in a few weeks.

Korosian Progress

Earlier this week, official registration paperwork that had not been delivered beforehand has reached the Kardia Temporia, Facilitating further readiness tasks to be completed for planet Korous's entry into The Federation. Foreign Affairs Prince of Time Travis Entropa has adapted to his cabinet position well and is currently handling much of the paperwork and prerequisite requests.
