Camilla's Kids: Generation 2 (22/100 babies) Part 1

Mariana started out in the same house as Camilla, but I got tired of the house and when she had a decent amount saved up (and after I got all the packs via a utility), we moved to San Sequoia, into a house I built just for them. It's still having things added but when it's properly done I'll post about both homes.

Mariana had 13 children, and early on I decided her love match was Grim. Her daughter Francesca is a Reaper! Since that doesn't impart occult anything, when I moved them out I used MCCC to flag Mariana as immortal, and I flagged Francesca as immortal and froze her age. She's in the CC career for graveyard caretaker or whatever it's called, and when I get an alert that someone died or that someone's spirit is fading, she's the one I take to the graveyard lot to collect the urns and lay out the gravestones and keep the spirit around.

Peyton, Ali, Theo, Stewart, Francesca, Gene, Kimberly, Whelan, Kathy, Lindsey, Victor & Maribel, Wesley. Whelan is a spellcaster. Wesley's dad is Clement Frost. Kimberly is an astonishingly pretty Sim. Maribel is the heir and is also very gorgeous, as is her twin brother, Victor.

Gene had a girl he liked for a while. I don't think they wound up together, but I can't be certain. I'd have to check the game.

The twins! Victor and Maribel were gorgeous babies and toddlers and children, and they both grew up to be really beautiful Sims. See next post for pictures of them as they grew.

Kimberly feeding Wesley as a toddler. She wound up taking care of her younger siblings for a while after Mariana and her older siblings all moved out. That phase is the next post!

It was this bit of mouse enrichment that lead my household to realize: Mice Love Skulls.

It also hit us that “Skull Mouse” would make a great name for an all pre-teen Death Metal garage band. I may have gone overboard adding in the gratuitous metal ümlauts though.

And I imagine some of you may be saying, “so your pet mouse played with a clay sculpture of a skull one time and you took a photo — that doesn't mean you can just say ‘Mice Love Skulls’ as a general rule” … however it wasn't just this skull, we have an assortment of skulls laying around, and she would climb on them any chance she got. And besides, you don't have to take just our word for it; check out this piece of art from Kathy Clemente:

Christianity and Sex from Plato to Paul

Readings:  L&F #555-557 (pp. 391-94), Clement of Alexandria Stromateis 3.4-10, Gaca, Kathy.  2003.  The Making of Fornication: Eros, Ethics, and Political Reform in Greek Philosophy and Early Christianity Chapter 10, “The fornicating justice of Epiphanes,.”

What struck me most about today’s reading was its relevance to life today, particularly in this political climate.  All right, so maybe communal sexual ethics are not exactly widely-advocated.  But Clement of Alexandria sounds like he is the mouthpiece of Focus on the Family, an unsettling similarity.  Gaca points out that the root of Christian social conservatism is found in Clement’s argument that procreationist monogamy is the only way to go.  Even his argument style sounds familiar -- he calls Epiphanes a “lewd outcast” and villifies his principles.  Somewhere Jerry Falwell is cackling with glee.  Maybe nobody today is pushing Platonic/Stoic sexual communalism.  But Epiphanes’ argument resonated with me in other ways, particularly his statement that God’s righteousness is social equity with no distinction between anybody (at least in the eyes of God, if not in the eyes of humanity).  I feel as though I’ve encountered variations of his argument from the kinds of Christians who attend Cornerstone Festival before.  It’s striking to me to see the dialogue I’ve heard so often between various groups of Christians reflected here, even if the historical context is completely different.

I was also intrigued by how much property is tied into sexuality, for both Clement and Epiphanes.  Epiphanes advocates for communalism not just sexually, but also in terms of property.  I guess this shouldn’t be surprising.  After all, I remember earlier in the semester when we talked about how property was easily the most important thing to the ancients, but I tend to think of ancient Christians as being somehow “different” than their counterparts.  That’s not true, though -- they would still have been influenced by their culture as much as anybody else.  I am also surprised to encounter such a strong bedrock of philosophy that endorsed the liberation of the burden of private ownership, to paraphrase Gaca.  I feel like I tend to associate Christianity with being obsessed with the ownership of private property (or at least a ringing endorsement of free-market capitalism), but that’s just my own cultural lens talking.

I’d also like to comment on how valuable I found Gaca’s chapter on Clement and Epiphanes in setting up historical context.  The context she provides near the beginning of the chapter really makes clear the importance of the dispute about sexual principles, and also helps Epiphanes’ arguments for sexual communalism make sense.  Gaca writes that Christianity at the time was countercultural* and shaped by communal social ideals.  This sentence made everything so much clearer for me.  Sexual communalism is a natural extension of the communal social ideals Christianity was shaped by at the time.  It wouldn’t have been a weird and foreign concept to them as it may be to us, especially since there was already a precedent of support for communalism established by Plato and early Stoics.

Lastly, I suppose I should comment on Paul.  I believe I’m the one person I know who actually likes Paul.** I’m not really a fan of predestination, but I think Paul captures the essence of the Christian message very well.  When I argue with friends about Paul, however, they’ll usually throw today’s readings at me and appeal to my feminism to ask how I can support him.  But does Paul not display an inclusive view of women by saying there is no difference between women and men in the eyes of God (at least in Galatians)?  I don’t know, I haven’t had time to do as much research into Paul’s writings on women as I would like but I feel like there has to be more to this story than the way so many people have interpreted it since (as an excuse to oppress women).  After all, he actively worked with women in the church (see Priscilla, off the top of my head) so I feel like we can’t take his (or pseudo-Paul’s?) comments that women must stay silent at face value.  But I don’t know much about this, so perhaps don’t put too much faith into this last paragraph.

*As it’s supposed to be, as some might say. **I lied, Professor Whitlatch likes Paul too.

This is a list of actors I pulled from IMDB. It’s not scientific, but it gives us a place to start. I included all the people that appeared nineteen times or more. Amazingly, it’s only 15 actors. And one of them does the voices for animals. Realistically, there’s 14 characters that speak nineteen times. 

What do these numbers mean?

First, this show is about the Crystal Gems, and everyone else is a distant second. Greg doesn’t get half as many appearances as Garnet.

Second, I think we can treat this list as an informal list of “major characters.” We can’t be too surprised that characters with fewer appearances don’t get as much development as we’d like.

I’d say, for the most part, these characters get as much development as they get episodes. Jenny has the least development, and she’s in only 20 episodes.

What do we learn from this list? The main thing I learned is that Sinbad played Mister Smiley. (!!!!!!) Despite doing an essay about every single episode of the show, I’d never looked at the entire cast list until now. Also, the wonderful Eugene Cordero, who I should have recognized by his voice. I also had no idea about Joan Jett. The casting on this show is perfection.

What really surprises me is how many characters feel fleshed out with so few appearances. It feels impossible that Barb and Vidalia can feel like real people while only appearing five and four times, respectively. Did Kofi only talk in three episodes?

When I look at these lists, there are three obvious candidates for my “done dirty” list. If you’ve followed my rewatch, you can probably guess who they are.

Blue Ridge Babies 1, 2, 3 by Laura Sperry Gardner (A counting book featuring animal babies of the Blue Ridge Mountains)

Tiny Little Rocket by Richard Collingridge (A great bedtime book that takes kids all around space and then back home)

Mousetronaut by Mark Kelly (The smallest mouse saves the day on a space mission. Written by a real astronaut!)

James' Reading Rescue by Dianna Wilson Sirkovsky (A boy who has trouble reading practices by reading to a cat at an animal shelter)

Fly by Nathan Clement (A step-by-step book about the process of taking a trip in a plane, from the perspective of a child traveler)
