c o u p l e c r u s h 〰️ I’ve been following one today’s two guests, yoga superstar @kathrynbudig since I first started yoga in high school. she was my yoga idol— for years I read her recipes, bought her books, and watched her talks. today’s other guest and Kathryn’s now wife, sports journalist and author, @katefagan3 came into my life more recently when my friend @rosetruesdale introduced me to their @freecookiespodcast a few years ago. instantly, I fell in love with their dynamic, the subject matter they covered, their humor, and eventually their free relationship advice or as they call it, cookies. my love of them as a couple led me to get to know & love Kate and her work individually as well, in this episode we talk about the important book she wrote last year, What Made Maddy Run and her own impressive career as a sports journalist. Day 4 of #KGOpenHeartedWarriors is Ustrasana (Camel) pose. 🐪 Historically, I have had a love/hate relationship with this pose because for me, it taps into full-on vulnerability. I feel exposed in a way that prone backbends don't elicit. As I've mentioned in prior posts, due to some abdominal and low back pain stemming from an SI joint issue coupled with scoliosis, I need to be REALLY mindful in all backbends these days. I follow these three alignment cues when coming in: (1) Lengthen sacrum toward back of knees; (2) Cinch waist (turn on transverse abdominus); (3) Retract shoulder blades then (don't miss this) USE THE QUADS to lower hands to heels and then inhale to broaden clavicles and lift out of the pelvis. To come out, keep the shape of the torso and USE THOSE QUADS to lift back up! A block in between the thighs is so helpful for me in this shape. I can't wait to see your hearts shine! ✨💫 To warm up for camel 🐪 I would suggest poses like: Cat-Cow, Scapular pushups (sometimes called Serratus pushups), Salabhasana, Dhanurasana, Low lunge with focus on psoas stretch and adding a quad stretch in the variation, Humble warrior, and core awareness work.
