Day 4 of #KGOpenHeartedWarriors is Ustrasana (Camel) pose. 🐪 Historically, I have had a love/hate relationship with this pose because for me, it taps into full-on vulnerability. I feel exposed in a way that prone backbends don't elicit. As I've mentioned in prior posts, due to some abdominal and low back pain stemming from an SI joint issue coupled with scoliosis, I need to be REALLY mindful in all backbends these days. I follow these three alignment cues when coming in: (1) Lengthen sacrum toward back of knees; (2) Cinch waist (turn on transverse abdominus); (3) Retract shoulder blades then (don't miss this) USE THE QUADS to lower hands to heels and then inhale to broaden clavicles and lift out of the pelvis. To come out, keep the shape of the torso and USE THOSE QUADS to lift back up! A block in between the thighs is so helpful for me in this shape. I can't wait to see your hearts shine! ✨💫 To warm up for camel 🐪 I would suggest poses like: Cat-Cow, Scapular pushups (sometimes called Serratus pushups), Salabhasana, Dhanurasana, Low lunge with focus on psoas stretch and adding a quad stretch in the variation, Humble warrior, and core awareness work.
