10 Things Only Pittas Will Understand
Does Ayurveda make your head spin? Here, Ayurvedic practitioner Sahara Rose Ketabi breaks the pitta dosha down into terms we can understand.
When Pittas are in balance, they are goal-oriented, ambitious, and passionate. When Pittas fall out of balance, they become angry, impatient, and forceful. If youâre a Pitta, you will likely relate to some of the following situations. (Take our Dosha Quiz now to discover your own mind-body type.)
See also âI Followed an Ayurvedic Lifestyle for a Monthâand Hereâs What Happenedâ
1. You wake up in the morning knowing exactly what is youâll be doing at every moment, from your 10-minute meditation to the phone calls youâll check off your list while youâre stuck in rush-hour traffic.
Some people call Pittas anal, but you prefer to see it as organized. When besides 6:30 am are you supposed to fit your Power Yoga class into a day of back-to-back meetings, grocery shopping runs, and highly curated Instagram posts?
2. Coffee is the fire that lights your soul.
Anything that makes you accomplish more is something Pittas want more of. When friends travel to tropical countries, they already know the souvenir youâll appreciate most... coffee beans. Oh and chocolate.
3. When itâs lunch time, you gotta eat. Youâre known for getting hangry (hungry/angry) and canât deny it.Â
Pittasâ bodies run on highly sensitive internal clock. âSchedule a meeting during lunch? Only if you want me to bite the other personâs head off,â you tell your assistant. Your belly doesnât whisperâit roars. And if you donât listen, everyone around you is going to have to.Â
4. Summer without AC is your form of torture.
It takes you back to summer you interned in New York City and lived in a lower East side apartment that could have easily doubled as a Bikram yoga studioâminus the chic lobby and welcoming receptionist. Pittas tend to run hot.
5. Youâre that person front and center in a yoga class taking every Chaturanga and Planks during Childâs Pose...
Pittas donât like to waste time. Being covered in sweat is meditative for you. Leaving a yoga class feeling like your body could have done more makes you more stressed out than you were before it. Another teacher may have better used the 60 minutes of your day you gave this one.
See also Yoga for Your Dosha: A Refreshing Pitta Yoga Sequence
6. You end up being the one who makes decisions in groupsâotherwise nothing gets done.Â
You learned that lesson in Kindergarten when your friends werenât sure if they wanted to go jump rope or hit the monkey bars. Pittas are planners. Thatâs why YOU were the one to come up with the genius plan to do both. Needless to say, youâve taken the lead ever since. Your family loves/despises you during vacations because you have every moment planned. How else will you be able to see all of the ruins and museums in such a short amount of time? Get moving people!
7. You read Marie Kondoâs Magical Art of Tidying Up and wasnât sure what the big deal was.
It read like someone just put your thoughts onto a page. Pittas are the ultimate organizers. To you, a messy home is obviously a messy mind. You secretly judge your friends who have junk drawers. Donât they know those seldom get sorted out?
8. You go to the bathroom after every meal and donât get how people can go the whole day without it.
Itâs like thereâs a hot potato in your pants that must be released after that Buddha bowl. Pittas have strong digestive fire. What goes in must come out! Itâs only natural!
9. Your friends are super jealousâif you work out once, you have muscle definition the next day.Â
You donât know if your muscle memory is to be credited to your high school gymnastic days or your marathon-running Dad but athleticism is in your blood! Pittas are natural athletes.Â
10. Your spirit animal is New York City.
A city that stays up all night, gets more done in a minute than the rest of the country does in a year, boasts one of the most efficient public transformation systems on the planet and has every type of yoga-fusion class possible? YES, New York, you are my soul city!

Noodles with Sambal Belacan (High Raw, Vegan) by #RawChefYin. Mr Jazz Guitarist wanted to try out the seaweek Shirataki noodles so I made this quick dish. Bok choy marinated with my very own sambal "belacan", organic soy sauce and minced garlic. Steamed long beans as the raw ones make me gassy. He loved it especially with the sambal. I added some lacto-fermented tomatoes to mine to make sure I had some live, natural probiotics in my system for a healthy gut and better digestion! Plating inspired by either @eatfeelfresh or @tasteoffruit - I saw one of them plate their noodles on their IG stories. Can't remember exactly who so you should just follow both of them. đâșđđŽđ #yummy #healthy #cleaneating #vegan #veganfoodshare #vegansofig #veganfriendly #veganeats #vegancommunity #vegans #vegandiet #veganfoodie #f52grams #huffpostgram #rawchef #rawfood #rawfoodie #eathealthy #eatclean #eatingclean #rawfoodcoach #rawfoodchef #vegansofmalaysia #foodstylist #craftingthefutureoffood #rcynoodles #shirataki #vegannoodles (at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia)

2018. You Were Hard. But You Were Great.
The Goddess Behind EatFeelFresh and Saraswati Couture
New yearâŠwhat does that equate to? A new me? A new era? A new chapter? A new beginning? All of the above?
Eh, to be honest, Iâve gotten incredibly sick of New Yearâs resolutions last year given that my daily life became so energy-taxing in itself that I couldnât keep myself as accountable with my long-term goals as I usually would. Iâve established, at least for my personal life, that itâs moreâŠ

Putting Ayurvedic Theory IRL Terms: What Your Dosha Really Says About You
Does Ayurveda make your head spin? Here, Ayurvedic practitioner Sahara Rose Ketabi breaks the seemingly complicated mind-body science down into terms we can understand.
Most yogis have heard of Ayurveda, the worldâs oldest health system and the sister science of yoga, originating 5,000 years ago. The mind-body types, called doshas, are what got me interested in Ayurveda. If you love personality quizzes like I always have, Ayurveda took them to a whole new level. Who knew your personality type could be related to your digestion? (Take our Dosha Quiz now to discover your own mind-body type.)
The word âdoshaâ means energy. And the three doshasâVata, Pitta, and Kaphaâare derived from the five natural elementsâair, ether, water, fire and earth. Vata is comprised of air and ether (think light, flowing, unpredictable). Pitta consists of fire and water (think powerful, transformational, bold). Kapha is made up of Earth and water (think grounded, calm, restorative).
See also The Best Herbs for Your Dosha
But What If I Feel Like Iâm All Three?
What confuses people most about Ayurveda is they often feel they identify with all three Doshas then donât know which guidelines to follow. Thatâs totally normalâwe are ALL a combination of all three doshas in varying amounts.
According to Ayurveda, we were each born with a unique doshic constitution determined at conception, which is called our prakriti. These are the features that do not change, like the shape of our face, characteristics of the body, and even our underlying character. If you have kids or siblings, youâve seen how different two people can be, even with the same upbringing. This is determined by the Prakriti.
Then we have our vikruti, which is the doshic constitution we have today. This is affected by our environment, diet, stress levels, activity, sleep patterns, and many other factors. For example, you may be more Pitta and fiery during a stressful time period in your life; you may be more Kapha and grounded during pregnancy; you may be more Vata and airy in a transitional time.
Seeing the World Through an Ayurvedic Lens
As soon as I learned about the doshas, it was like a light switched on in my mind. Suddenly, I saw the world around me from a whole new Ayurvedic perspective. Everywhere I went, I saw these doshas come to life through the people I came across. You probably have to.
Take a yoga class. The fiery Pitta people are the ones practicing inversions all class in the front and going into Plank during every Childâs Pose. You can spot a Vata by zeroing in on the person who somehow manages to be in Half Moon while the rest of class is in Warrior II. And youâll know someone is feeling Kapha that day if theyâre the first to Savasana. This is obviously an exaggeration, but learning about the Ayurvedic Doshas allows you to see the world, and yourself, through a whole new lens. Ayurveda may be ancient but its teachings are just as relevant to modern-day life as they ever were before.
In these series of articles, Iâm going to share 10 things each dosha will totally identify with. You will probably relate to all three to some extent, but there one will likely be your go-to. That is your predominant dosha. The one thatâs sort of you but not completely is your secondary dosha. And the one that feels least like you is the one you may need to work to evoke more of.
Now that weâve discussed the doshas from a theoretical perspective, letâs see look at how they show up in everyday life.Â

10 Things Only Vatas Will Understand
Does Ayurveda make your head spin? Here, Ayurvedic practitioner Sahara Rose Ketabi breaks the vata dosha down into terms we can understand.
The Vata dosha comprised of air and ether energy. Itâs light, free-flowing, spacey, and sometimes forgetful. Vatas are known to be multi-passionate, frequently starting more projects than they can finish. Theyâre flexible and dynamic, which others can sometimes see as flakey and unpredictable. They are the most creative of the Doshas and the true visionaries of society. The hardest part for them is knowing which vision to stick to.Â
When Vatas are in balance, they are creative, idealistic, and artistic. When Vatas fall out of balance, they become anxious, fearful, and unable to sleep. If youâre a Vata, you will likely relate to some of the following situations (I know all too well, as a Vata myself.)
See also âI Followed an Ayurvedic Lifestyle for a Monthâand Hereâs What Happenedâ
1. You change your lifeâs purpose more often than you wash your yoga mat.
Vatas have big dreams...and sometimes too many of them. You know you were set on this planet to make it a better place but arenât sure if thatâs going to be through saving the environment, teaching yoga to inner-city children, or creating art installations for Burning Man. Maybe itâs all three.
2. Eating on a schedule reminds you of being in schoolânot gonna happen.
Vatas move with the wind and hate anything that reminds them of a schedule or the number of tardies they got in elementary school. Being told to schedule your hunger seems unnatural to you. Humans were meant to forage. Why should you eat lunch only between 12 and 1?
3. You donât understand how people get bored.
Vatas have busy minds. Yours is like a 24-hour reality show/music festival/inspirational memoir. You donât even remember what itâs like to be bored. Even if you arenât physically doing anything, youâre mentally doing at least 108 things at once and self-narrating throughout.
4. You plan your outfits based on how bloated youâre going to be after eating.
Youâve given up on crop-tops for a dinner out. (Heck, youâve given up on them in general.) Vatas suffer from irregular digestionâand bloating as a consequence. You know your belly is going to expand like you were 3-months pregnant as soon as you eat that kale and avocado salad so you may as well plan ahead with a baggy shirt...
5. You use your significant otherâs legs as a foot warmer.
What else are they for? Vatas tend to run cold. Your feet magically turn into icicles as soon as the sun goes down and your partnerâs legs are the perfect antidote.
See also Elemental Yoga: An Earthy Sequence to Ground Vata
6. You are pretty much guaranteed to be constipated your entire trip to Europe so you bring your Triphala (Ayurvedic colon-cleansing herb) with you.
As a Vata, your digestive system is already a delicate enough balance as it is. Even too strong of a wind can throw it off, let alone a trip to Europe without your carefully curated meals that temporarily keep your constipation symptoms at bay... You already know youâll be lucky to go once during the week. Triphala, youâre coming to see the Eiffel Tower.
7. Youâve never met a creative task you didnât love.
Being a Vata, creativity runs in your blood. Youâll sign up for any vision-boarding, matcha-making, and back-bending workshops you come across. Youâve had past lives as artisans, shoemakers, philosophers, and everything in between (or so your shaman says). You wish full-time jobs didnât exist so you could focus full time on your hobbies (and somehow get paid for it).
8. You have a really hard time holding still in Savasana and always feel like there are some extra poses you need first.
Vatas might recognize this kind of internal dialogue: âWait? Savasana already? I didnât get to stretch out my left quad. Maybe I can sneak in Eka Pada Rajakapotasana. No, I canât, itâs totally rude. But my quad, itâs screaming for me to stretch it! Maybe when sheâs not looking... Crap, sheâs looking. I need to lie down... Hmm can I finagle a quad stretch into Savasana. I canât be too loud though... Wait... sheâs telling me to wiggle my fingers and toes? Savasanaâs over!? Darnit, I didnât rest my mind OR stretch my quad!â
9. You have at least 3 projects going at once and couldnât imagine life otherwise.
Some might say Vatas struggle with focus, while you see it as diversifying your skillset⊠When people ask what you do for a living, you donât know where to start. Itâs something like âI help people get back in touch with their true divine feminine nature while also teaching SUP yoga and working in soul-sucking corporate America.â Psh, you donât like labels anyway.Â
10. Your spirit animal is Prince.
A purple-dressing, stereotype-stopping, mic-dropping, total game-changer who was years ahead of his time and did it with sass? YASSSS Prince speaks your language.

10 Things Only Kaphas Will Understand
Does Ayurveda make your head spin? Here, Sahara Rose Ketabi, Ayurvedic practitioner and author of the forthcoming Idiotâs Guide to Ayurveda, breaks the kapha dosha down into terms we can understand.
The Kapha dosha is comprised of Earth and water energy. Itâs soothing, grounding, cooling and sometimes lazy. Kaphas are known to be nurturing and supportive but sometimes have a difficult time with their own self-care because they put the needs of others before their own. Theyâre habitual and stable, which others can sometimes see as boring and repetitive. Though they are the most loving of the Doshas, they also are the most likely to suffer from depression because they keep what is going on internally inside of themselves, which leads to throat chakra imbalance issues such as thyroid problems, mucus and colds. The hardest part for them is allowing more movement into their lives.Â
When Kaphas are in balance, they are peaceful, grounded, and authentic. When Kaphas fall out of balance, they binge-eat and under-exercise, causing weight-gain and diabetes. If youâre a Kapha, you will likely relate to some of the following situations.
See also âI Followed an Ayurvedic Lifestyle for a Monthâand Hereâs What Happenedâ
1. People who wake up bursting with energy in the morning make you even more tired.
Kaphas will likely relate to this internal dialogue: âCan you just use your âindoor voiceâ on the 6 am? Itâs only common courtesy to us exhausted people.â
2. You arenât even sure what your personality would be like without coffee, matcha, or yerba mate.
It would be something between a blob, teddy bear, and the cookie monster. Kaphas just want food, sleep, and cuddles.
3. People with road rage make you laugh.Â
Kaphas donât tend to take life so seriouslyâor rush anywhere. âCongrats on that awesome left turn you snuck in last minute before the light turned red. You deserve a reward for that one, Pitta! Have fun stressing all day at work,â you think.
4. Youâd rather lunch than lunge.
Workout during your lunch break? Umm then when are you supposed to eat?
5. Your Sunday church? Namaste in bedâall day.Â
Sundays are sacred and so is your bed. You arenât about checking out the latest open houses or reading the mega edition of the New York Times. Kaphas like to invest in restâitâs a sure bet and has never failed you before.
See also Elemental Yoga: An Airy Asana Sequence to Balance Kapha
6. You can go the whole day without eating but once you start your stomach is like a never-ending pit.
Kaphas go from sweet to salty to food coma faster than it wouldâve taken to make a pot of Kitchari. Maybe itâs time to conquer your fear of a pressure cooker.
7. You donât get how some people eat whatever they want and donât gain a pound.
Kaphas gain weight easilyâlike just looking at their fries. âAnd the milkshake with it, girl? You serious? I feel like Iâm channeling the cellulite for you.â
8. You were basically born a Grandmother.Â
Kaphas love working with their handsâcooking, knitting, sewing. Can knitting clubs be a thing again? Apparently they are in Portland, another reason on your list to move there. At least in Portland, other people understand your ideal Friday night set-up: pajama pants, a recipe book, some handicrafts and tea. Lots of tea. And something sweet because #YOLO.
9. Networking events give you the heebie jeebies...Â
Your idea of socializing is asking fellow party-goers what they think of the hummus. You end up leaving with zero business cards and a purseful of samples.
10. You canât leave a party without having someone spill their life story and thank you for your guidance and support.
Kaphas are great listeners and empathizers. Youâre a problemed-people magnet and wouldnât have it any other way. No wonder your friend group has dubbed you Oprah.
