Episode 671 — Kathleen Rooney

Kathleen Rooney is the guest. Her new novel, Cher Ami and Major Whittlesey, is available from Penguin Books.

This is her second time on the program. She first appeared in Episode 274 on May 4, 2014.

Rooney is a founding editor of Rose Metal Press, a nonprofit publisher of literary work in hybrid genres, as well as a founding member of Poems While You Wait, a team of poets and their typewriters who compose commissioned poetry on demand. She teaches in the English Department at DePaul University, and her most recent books include the national best-seller, Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk (St. Martin’s Press 2017 / Picador 2018) and The Listening Room: A Novel of Georgette and Loulou Magritte (Spork Press, 2018). 

A winner of the Ruth Lilly Fellowship from Poetry magazine, she is the author of nine books of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction, including the novel O, Democracy! (Fifth Star Press, 2014); the novel in poems Robinson Alone (Gold Wake Press, 2012), based on the life and work of Weldon Kees; the essay collection For You, For You I Am Trilling These Songs (Counterpoint, 2010); and the art modeling memoir Live Nude Girl: My Life as an Object (University of Arkansas Press, 2009). OMA creates three open-air terraces for Prince Plaza in Shenzhen

Dutch architecture firm OMA has built Prince Plaza in Shenzhen, an office skyscraper with three cut-outs for terraces lined with golden hexagons.

Located on the waterfront in Shenzhen's Shekou district, the 200-metre-tall tower was built for property company China Merchants Shekou Holdings (CMSH).

OMA created the open-air terraces – called "sky decks" – high above street level by cutting into the shape of the tower, which is made of four volumes clustered around a central core.

Prince Plaza sits in the sightline of views down from the mountains to the sea, so these terraces are intended to lessen the impact of the building on the skyline while creating more vantage points for the public.

A multi-storey podium at the base of the office tower houses a shopping centre with a rooftop garden.

This shopping centre extends several levels below ground, where it connects Prince Plaza to two of Shenzhen's metro lines.

The golden hexagon-patterned filigree used to decorate the sky decks appears again on parts of this podium, visually connecting the complex.

The hexagonal design creates patterns that appear to rise and fall, chosen to reflect the ridges of the mountains and the waves of water that surround the city.

To bring light into the office spaces of Prince Plaza, OMA set two of the vertical volumes of the tower back from the other two.

The offset allows more light in through the wide glass panels of the facade and gives the occupants striking views.

Founded in 1975 by Rem Koolhaas Elia and Zoe Zenghelis and Madelon Vriesendorp, OMA has untaken several buildings in Shenzhen, including the Shenzhen Stock Exchange and the upcoming International Conference and Exchange Centre.

Today was the app seminar-style session where we went around and commented on everyones apps and see what they had been doing. We were really impressed by everyones designs and thought that a lot of them were really well made. We got inspired by a few of them and thought about including some ideas into out own app design. Below are all the comments we received on our app. 

Looks super artsy, we like it. Keegan got a fright from the phone call :) looks VERY polished. The title screen background image is a little low resolution. some text under the icons would be helpful. From what we can tell you have done exactly what you set out to do, and it is really simple to use. It has good navigation and is easy to go in-between screens, be excited to see when the app is completely done :) - Charlie and Keegan

Kathleen and Alyssa: Design aspect- really cool. Video background is cool. Quite difficult to navigate around the app. We really didn’t know what to do at first, We weren’t clear of where to go and what to do. As a first time user signing up, Having a mini instruction page would be good maybe? To make it clear for new users like us. But the concept is really unique and well thought out. We really liked it and is keen to see the final product.

Amelia & hannah

Really like how the icons sort of glow. The type in the birthday/gender bars is a tad to small but nice type face is cool and suits the app well. Love how you have a video in the app its original. Its quite a long process to get to the end result but each screen was nice and your icon design was on point. You really thought of everything that would be nessacary for the app. The very beginning image was a little blurry, but great logo. Really nice ascetic! and great app/idea overall! Excited to see the final product.

Muzi and Caitlin the guide screen font is a bit too small to read. The font is really cool, good choice of font. the effect of choosing is really cool. maybe create a home shortcut. icons are a bit small in the  sign up page. a bit confusing how to go back to the home page We love the colours, feeling very modern and fresh

Mingi and Chawon

Quite difficult to navigate around the app. The font sizes are too small. It was bit hard to read, but nice typeface. I think navigation bar needed on some pages because there are quite a long process to the end or to the main menu.

Logo is nice, but image on the main menu is bit blurry. The neon effects are really cool, but it kinda makes hard to read the fonts.

Login and sign up process is a bit long. e.g., Facebook uses one screen. you could add the profile details in the profile tab, so the user shoots straight into the app. Map screen with globe looks dope af (3d model, obj file type or something ) Icons look good but the white filled in makes it look selected. So on home screen home icon is white, settings is white and power is white. Needs more visual signs to know what you're currently on. Maybe fill + colour Glowing + icon distracts from its actual use. looks to stylised and not functional (but it actually is functional) Explore page has a different art direction. Bring some cohesion to that page with the rest of app. Overall like the futuristic theme. You've pulled it of well

app style doesn't relate to luxury transport maybe because if font choice? love the moving image of the lake you cant minus the tip once you create it doesn't look very celebrity - kind of out of space like??

Reflection 

Most of our feedback was based on the navigating of our app, and how things aren't connected. also how so buttons are too small to use. Going forward, we going to make sure the buttons are super easy to push, as well as making the navigation clear, and easy to use. 

Prototyping software

at the start, we were using indigo studio, then we changed to sketch. This prototype is done on invision studio. We chose this as it created animation between each page. this made the app feel way more professional, as well as catering to our idea of animating the background a little bit.  

we also did look into sketch, and this is the initial designs came from, but then, later on, we moved that file into invision.
