Dread by the Decade: Isle of the Dead
👻 You can support me on Ko-fi! ❤️
Tumblr media
★★
Plot: When a Greek general takes his leave from the 1912 Balkan War, he finds himself trapped on an island where the black plague is spreading.
Review: Though its concept regarding the paranoia that can be incited by disease and quarantine is interesting, it suffers from sluggish dialogue and rushed action.
Tumblr media
Source Material: Isle of the Dead by Arnold Böcklin Year: 1945 Genre: Psychological Horror, Bio Horror Country: United States Language: English Runtime: 1 hour 12 minutes
Tumblr media
Director: Mark Robson Writers: Ardel Wray, Val Lewton, Josef Mischel Cinematographer: Jack MacKenzie Editor: Lyle Boyer Composer: Leigh Harline Cast: Boris Karloff, Ellen Drew, Marc Cramer, Katherine Emery, Jason Robards, Sr., Helene Thimig, Alan Napier
Tumblr media
-----
Story: 2/5 - There are genuine moments of unease, but the story's timeline is way too rushed for the ensuing madness to be believable.
Performances: 3/5 - Karloff portrays a man succumbing to paranoia well with what he's given and Drew is likable. Cramer, however, is boring as a leading man.
Cinematography: 3.5/5 - Striking shadows and slow zooms.
Tumblr media
Editing: 3.5/5 - Some good dissolves and quick cuts.
Music: 3/5
Effects & Props: 2/5 - Unrealistic statues and a silly looking murder weapon.
Sets: 2/5 - Some of it feels rather low budget, with the crypt being way too sparse. The rooms in the manor are well furnished and the island itself is fine.
Costumes, Hair, & Make-Up: 2.5/5 - Little effort was put into making anyone look ill or particularly unkempt.
youtube
Trigger Warnings:
Mild violence
Suicide (off-screen)
Medical scenes
Inaccurate portrayal of Greek culture and beliefs

sooo here is the current list that might get scrapped! Used * for where I really want to keep either a concept or face but the vibes are lacking but that doesn't mean that those ocs might not end up scrapped or that other ocs might not end up surviving if the vibes start to click better in my brain. I kind of hate the feeling of scrapping any but at the same time I am constantly overwhelmed by having too many ocs, never doing anything for them, and then feeling guilty for not doing anything...
(if i do scrap them, should I just delete them and move on or should I do some sort of plot bunny adoption offer with these + some past scrapped ones in case anyone else can get more use out of the ideas?)

Some might survive or end up getting recast/revamped to see if that inspires me but tbd… should I post the list before I make any decisions?

WHAT A TIME! Last night, I officially kicked off the release of my book with a private party at the Comcast Technology Center with 150 of my closest family, friends, and fans! It was everything, everywhere, all at once. Next to my wedding and college graduation, I don’t think I’ve ever felt so elated in my entire life.
We had the best cocktails, food, and vibes. I had an awesome fireside chat with the legendary Ms. Patty Jackson and signed over a hundred copies afterwards! Then there was an impromptu after party that was filled with more surprises and gifts! I want to thank everyone who came out last night and made this one for the books! I wanted you all to feel the same level of joy I experienced and I’m so glad the magic was felt!
Some major shout-outs:
Thank you Comcast for hosting this incredible event. I appreciate you Dalila Wilson Scott, Bret Perkins, Scott Barnes, and the entire events team for making this an innovative wonder!
Thank you Cashman & Associates for coordinating all of the local media for my book and being a co-sponsor for this event. I appreciate you Nicole Cashman, Michelle Conron, Sofia Pignitor, and the entire team for putting a spotlight on me to shine brighter.
Thank you Harriet’s Bookshop for being the official book vendor at my event. I appreciate and adore you Jeannine Cook and your staff for believing in this vision from the moment I announced I had a book deal. (Yes, now everyone can exclusively get autographed copies of the book at her lovely store!)
Thank you to the Laborers District Council for being a co-sponsor of this private book launch party. I appreciate you Ryan Boyer, Dione Firth, and the entire team for making sure young people are able to get access to this very important book.
Thank you Philadelphia Distilling for being the official liquor sponsor of this event. I truly appreciate your ongoing support for my love of Bluecoat and your commitment to local organizations.
Thank you Cake Life Bake Shop for designing that incredible book cake. From my wedding to my birthday – and now this, you all have always made sure I was in great hands!
Thank you Councilmember Katherine Gilmore Richardson for surprising me with a lovely citation that was backed unanimously by the City Council of Philadelphia. I was truly touched by those words and having it presented in front of my most loyal faves was everything.
Thank you Philly CAM for presenting me with a proclamation that honored my years of service at your beloved nonprofit. I appreciate you, Gretjen Clausing and the entire staff and membership for giving me a media home away from home.
I am truly on Cloud 9 right now and taking all of this in.
You can listen to the live recording of my fireside chat with Ms. Patty Jackson, which is now a special edition episode of #ErnestlySpeaking right here.

Tumblr media
The name Kennedy is of Irish and Scottish origin and means "chief with helmet.” It derives from the Irish Anglicised form of Cinnéidigh. Kennedy has become quite a popular unisex name across America.
Ryder could also have been the name for a messenger or a mounted warrior – from the Old English word ridere, meaning “to ride,” or from the old German word rutter of similar meaning.
Tumblr media
The name Danica is a girl's name of Slavic origin meaning "Morning Star". While Danica may sound similar to Dana, Danielle, and Daniela, Danica is not a variation. Danica, a delicate and unique Slavic name meaning "Morning Star," is synonymous with Venus in many countries.
The surname with a Hebrew origin is transliterated into English as either Perez or Peretz, and is derived from the Hebrew given name פרץ (cf. Genesis 38:29), after the biblical character Perez (son of Judah), which in Hebrew means "to breach" or "to burst forth". That biblical character's Hebrew name, however, is transliterated as Farés in the Spanish Christian Bible
Tumblr media
In Italian, the word "amara" means “bitter.” In the Igbo language, which is spoken in Nigeria and other parts of Africa, the name means “grace.” And in Sanskrit, the language of ancient India, Amara means “deathless” or “immortal.”
The name Owen is of Irish and Welsh origin. Its meanings range from noble, youthful, and well-born
Tumblr media
The name Ashlee is of American origin and has been around since the Old English era. The meaning of Ashlee is 'meadow of ash tree' or 'ash meadow'. The name comes from the Old English term 'aesc', translating to 'wood clearing' and 'leah', translating to 'meadow'. Another meaning is 'wood clearing, meadow'. The name is a variant of Ashley.
Burrell is derived from a nickname. 'the borel,' originally a term for a kind of coarse cloth. Afterwards used adjectively for a comely man, a peasant, a countryman;
Tumblr media
Judith is a feminine given name derived from the Hebrew name יְהוּדִית or Yehudit, meaning "woman of Judea". Judith appeared in the Old Testament as one of Esau's wives, while the deuterocanonical Book of Judith deals with a different Judith. It is in common usage in English, French, German, many Scandinavian languages, Dutch, and Hebrew. In Eritrea it is called Yodit.
Burch is an English surname that most likely originated in Hyndley Birch, Rusholme, Manchester, England. The origins of the name can be traced back as far as 1500. The name can also be a variation of Birch, being derived from one who resides at or near a birch-tree.
Tumblr media
In the early Christian era it came to be associated with the Greek adjective καθαρός (katharos), meaning "pure", leading to the alternative spellings Katharine and Katherine.
Boyer (French pronunciation: [bwaje]) is a French surname. In rarer cases, it can be a corruption or deliberate alteration of other names. In England, it may come from bowyer, meaning "bow maker" or "bow seller." In Turkish, the name may come from "boy-er", "boy" meaning "size" or "stature" and "er" meaning "man" or "soldier." It can also be a corruption or deliberate alteration of German names like Bayer or Bauer.
Tumblr media
Melanie is a feminine given name derived from the Greek μελανία (melania), "blackness" and that from μέλας (melas), meaning "dark".
Medina is a common habitational Spanish-Muslim toponymic surname. The surname was derived from several cities and towns of Spain such as Medina del Campo, Medina de Pomar, Medina de Rioseco, Medinaceli, Medina-Sidonia and Medina de las Torres. The use of the term dates back to the Muslim rule of Al Andalus (8th–15th century) and it originates from the Arabic word madīnah (مَدِيْنَة) which means "city".
Spanish and Portuguese: habitational name from Vargas in Santander province, or a topographic name from vargas, plural of varga, a dialect term used in various senses: ‘(thatched) hut’, ‘steep slope’, or ‘fenced pastureland which becomes waterlogged in winter’.
Tumblr media
Avery originated in the Middle Ages as a Norman-French pronunciation variation of the Anglo-Saxon name Alfred and the Ancient Germanic name Alberich. The elements aelf, meaning "elf" and ric, meaning "ruler" give Avery its meaning. While Avery is considered by many to be a surname name, it was a given name first. It was used as a patronymic surname when England began to require last names.
Sanford is an English language toponymic surname, deriving from numerous localities named for a sandy ford.

Note
b, c and f for elenore, beatrice and katherine <3
B: Basics
1. what is their hair color?
Elenore has brown hair, not super dark though, and she’s dyed her hair blonde a few times. generally you can still see her natural color because she doesn’t do her roots most of the time
Beatrice also has light brown hair, the same shade as Arthur’s.
Katherine has dark brown, almost black hair
2. what is their eye color?
Elenore and Katherine both have dark brown eyes; Beatrice has light blue eyes
3. how tall are they?
Elenore is 5’4, Beatrice is 5’7, and Katherine is 5’2
4. how old are they?
Elenore is 29 at the start of fc5, 48 by new dawn
Beatrice’s age varies but most of the time when I think about her she’s 18/19
Katherine is 30 prewar, 230-ish postwar
5. how much do they weigh?
all of them are between like 160-170 lbs
C: Comfort
1. how do they sit in a chair?
Katherine and Bea sit normally, maybe slouch a bit
Elle on the other hand cannot sit correctly in a chair, most of the time she’s got a leg propped up or she’ll sit on one leg and have the other scrunched into the seat
2. in what position do they sleep?
All of them for the most part sleep on their backs or sides, nothing interesting except Elle has to have a leg out from under the blankets because she gets hot
3. what is their ideal comfort day?
Elle’s would be sitting in the couch, marathoning true crime documentaries
Bea’s would be just spending the day wandering around, probably in the woods or reading a book by a pond
Katherine would probably just shut herself in her room, maybe read
4. what is their major comfort food? why?
Elle’s comfort food in general would be soups or stews, they make her feel cozy, same with Bea
Katherine would probably pick a prewar food, probably one of those perfectly preserved pies since they’re so hard to get lol
5. who is the best at comforting them when down?
for Elle it’s her partner. regardless of who it is, they all know her and how she is and how to calm her down
for Bea it’d be either of her parents. she’s close with both of them
for Katherine it’s probably herself, she’s not very close with others. maybe Curie?
F: Fun
1. what do they do for fun?
Elle does just about anything, she doesn’t really have a favorite thing. she likes to bake!
Bea loves to read, and she tries to draw too! but most of the time you can find her playing something on the piano
Katherine takes walks. heavily guarded mind you but she does like to walk around like she used to
2. what is their ideal party?
Katherine’s not much of a party-er, but ideally she’d just have a nice night with close friends
Bea is a bit more, once she gets big in the music industry she holds and attends a lot of parties. lots of music and people and food lol
Elle is the biggest out of all of them but her only experience with parties is house parties and backyard get togethers so,,,that
3. who would they have the most fun with?
for all of them, whoever they’re closest with!
4. can they have fun while conforming to rules?
oh definitely, but Elle sometimes can get carried away
5. do they go out a lot?
Katherine, not much
No cult Elle does, and she very much enjoys trying to have some sort of get together in her regular canon
Bea, definitely

LF: Can you tell me about your upcoming exhibition “The Prairie Rose Won’t Mourn Us?”
KB: The idea for the exhibition came after reading the story “The Year the Roses Died” by Mary Siisip Geniusz in the book Plants Have So Much to Give Us, All We Have to Do Is Ask: Anishinaabe Botanical Teachings (2015). It’s a complex story that covers a lot of different things for different people, but one thing that really struck me was the description of life cycles and different species’ degrees of reliance on others for survival. Plants can sustain themselves from their environment; animals require plants to live, but are also partially self-sustaining. It is only humans who are entirely reliant on others—plants and animals—for survival. This really shifts the hierarchy of power from humans on the top to humans being the most vulnerable, in the grand scheme of things, because we are so reliant on our world, our animal neighbours and plants to support our lives.
The title of the exhibition draws on two things: in the story, all of the roses were eaten by the animals. The roses eventually return, but with thorns for self-protection—now they are prepared. The rose exists as a cautionary tale against over-consumption. The roses won’t miss us when we’re gone from this planet, when we’ve destroyed ourselves, but I do believe that plants have an innate ability to survive and they certainly don’t need us. The prairie rose is an important flower and symbol for Métis women, in particular. The prairie rose is durable, tenacious, beautiful and widely found on the Plains. It appears in a lot of old Métis beadwork, so it’s clear to me that we, as Métis artists, have long looked to this plant for inspiration and answers.

Isle of the Dead (Mark Robson, 1945)
Cast: Boris Karloff, Ellen Drew, Marc Cramer, Katherine Emery, Helene Thimig, Alan Napier, Jason Robards Sr., Ernst Deutsch. Screenplay: Ardel Wray. Cinematography: Jack MacKenzie. Art direction: Albert S. D’Agostino, Walter E. Keller. Film editing: Lyle Boyer. Music: Leigh Harline.
Two famous works of art haunt (I use the obvious word intentionally) the film Isle of the Dead. The obvious one is Arnold Böcklin's painting of that name, five versions of which he painted from 1880 to 1901, the year of his death. The image is re-created early in the movie, when the Greek Gen. Nikolas Pherides (Boris Karloff) and an American reporter, Oliver Davis (Marc Cramer) sail to a Greek island to visit the grave of the general's daughter. But the other, less obvious work that comes to my mind is Francisco Goya's aquatint etching The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters, one of the images he created for the series Los caprichos in the late 1790s. In it, a man slumped at his desk is surrounded by menacing bats and owls. Producer Val Lewton's celebrated series of moody psychological horror movies in the 1940s typically depict conflicts between the scientific, rational mind and manifestations of superstition and myth. In the film, the island is swept by what a doctor (Ernst Deutsch) diagnoses as septicemic plague, but the superstitious resident of the island, Madame Kyra, believes it's caused by a vorvolaka, a vampire-like creature she thinks is embodied in the pretty young Thea (Ellen Drew), who is nursing the sickly Mrs. St. Aubyn (Katherine Emery). And when the doctor himself dies, the superstitious view begins to win out, especially with the general. But the narrative track of the movie, which inevitably includes a romance between the reporter and Thea, and which tends to come apart at the seams a little toward the end, matters less than the creepy effect it creates, including such horrors as the fear of being buried alive. Karloff gives the best performance, of course, as he degenerates from the imperious general who calmly sends a delinquent officer off to commit suicide into a man gripped by terrors he can't face.

In case you’ve missed it, Katherine Waterston posted these to her Instagram story today after the news of JK Rowling being a TERF again.
I love Katherine more than ever - she stands with trans and non binary folk, and she understands that trans women do not threaten “womanhood” or cis-women in any shape or form.
I try not to get too political or rude on my Katherine pages but... F*ck JK Rowling. Stan Katherine Boyer Waterston instead!
