Dread by the Decade: Isle of the Dead
👻 You can support me on Ko-fi! ❤️
★★
Plot: When a Greek general takes his leave from the 1912 Balkan War, he finds himself trapped on an island where the black plague is spreading.
Review: Though its concept regarding the paranoia that can be incited by disease and quarantine is interesting, it suffers from sluggish dialogue and rushed action.
Source Material: Isle of the Dead by Arnold Böcklin Year: 1945 Genre: Psychological Horror, Bio Horror Country: United States Language: English Runtime: 1 hour 12 minutes
Director: Mark Robson Writers: Ardel Wray, Val Lewton, Josef Mischel Cinematographer: Jack MacKenzie Editor: Lyle Boyer Composer: Leigh Harline Cast: Boris Karloff, Ellen Drew, Marc Cramer, Katherine Emery, Jason Robards, Sr., Helene Thimig, Alan Napier
-----
Story: 2/5 - There are genuine moments of unease, but the story's timeline is way too rushed for the ensuing madness to be believable.
Performances: 3/5 - Karloff portrays a man succumbing to paranoia well with what he's given and Drew is likable. Cramer, however, is boring as a leading man.
Cinematography: 3.5/5 - Striking shadows and slow zooms.
Editing: 3.5/5 - Some good dissolves and quick cuts.
Music: 3/5
Effects & Props: 2/5 - Unrealistic statues and a silly looking murder weapon.
Sets: 2/5 - Some of it feels rather low budget, with the crypt being way too sparse. The rooms in the manor are well furnished and the island itself is fine.
Costumes, Hair, & Make-Up: 2.5/5 - Little effort was put into making anyone look ill or particularly unkempt.

Trigger Warnings:
Mild violence
Suicide (off-screen)
Medical scenes
Inaccurate portrayal of Greek culture and beliefs
