Hello everybody!

If you remember my 1990s Polish entries fanart, here's the basis for it, drawn two years ago. I started off wanting to draw Cleopatra's dress, but then figured I might draw all four of the best Greek entries from the 1990s (I Anixi, Olou tou Kosmos i Elpida, Ellada Hora tou Fotos, and Pia Prosefhi).

Greece has seen most of its success in the 2004-13, thanks to its mix of traditional Greek music and pop (with some exceptions in 2006 and 2009). However, I learned about this era thanks to Pia Prosefhi, which mesmerized me so much it got me into 1990s Eurovision, including the three entries above.

Artist's Notes:

--Thank God for the RTE archives; they have good photos (albeit watermarked) of some of the performers and that's what I used for the basis of these drawings.

--I'm not entirely happy with the lillies for I anixi; they're somewhat under-sketched, though they flowed well with the the rest of the image.

--I thought drawing Kaiti Garbi would be harder than expected, because she was drawn at a profile and I haven't drawn at that angle that much. Fortunately, it turned up nicely, and I like how I used Millstreet's stage for the background.

Three Minutes to Eternity: My ESC 250 (#37)

#37: Katerina Garbi -- Ellada, Hora tou Fotos (Greece 1993)

Tropical and evocative, and you could note it from the very first bars. Though it has a good instrumentation, it does zig-zag in different places--the studio cut is a bit more pop-oriented (with the one sold on one of Kaiti's albums marketed as a "dance remix"), the live is a more serious blend of dance and ethnic music. Behind the scenes, there was a tug-of-war on which direction to take the arrangement, but Haris Andreadis does a good job giving a cool vibe to the strings here.

This song sings its praises of Greece, while telling about how it needs to stand up for itself. While patriotic, it does tell the country (or its politicians) they have to show it as well, hinting at something going on in the country. It's more pertinent now than it was in 1993, because of the economic crises of 2008 and the subsequent chaos which arose from it (see #207 for a little more information on it). As much Greece is a beautiful country with the roots to Western civilization, it must be able to update itself lest it falls into ruin.

Kaiti's performance is also fantastic, starting with her notable catwalk on stage! She wears a tight, turquoise dress which had multiple cuts on the sides, which made people ask if she was wearing underwear for twenty-one years. She also has a bunch of stage presence, with her dancing and the way she stares at the camera.

This becomes important here, as the last forty seconds of the performance become a masterpiece. RTE dropped the ball hard on the camerawork this year, but this was one which they did right. Whereas the rehearsal footage shows a few different takes on the second chorus, the director actually did something good and focus it on Kaiti. And she swallows all the attention through and through.

Ellada, Hora Tou Fotos is such a great song, it got me into Kaiti's other discography, and I love it so much. Some of my personal favorite include the lively Xipoliti horevo, the sexy Doro Theou, the playful Kalitera I Dio Mas (with Anna Vissi--#112 and #239 for her entries) and her most recent hit Ama figo . I don't think that this catalyzed Kaiti's career in Greece, but it's still a fantastic track, and both she and the song aged well.
