I miss Titanic the musical so bad, though.

I’ve been meaning to write a long list of things I enjoyed about it, but the cold has made my head feel like my brain’s replaced with a boiled cabbage (well, burnout, constant ADHD-related overwhelming etc. does that too, sure, but the cold’s made it worse), and I’ve also been sleeping for 12 hours per day, so I haven’t gotten around to it.

But I just want to say: Alice and Edgar Beane and Steward Etches, my absolute beloveds, and also, one of the Kates was so charismatic I wish I could’ve seen the show one more time just to watch what she was doing in every scene.

What can I say, I love legitimate theatre.

Fandom: Doctor Who

Summary: The Doctor found out what happened to a former companion after they left his care.

Warning: mention of torture.

   The thing about being the companion of the Doctor is you can't stay with him forever. You would eventually have to leave the Doctor and the Tardis. You would have to try to put the pieces that is the life you have before the Doctor back on track. 

  The time the companion spend with the Doctor will change them for better or worse. They became changed by the experiences that sometimes they seek for a life that closely resembles those time with the Doctor. Like Martha who worked for UNIT, Jack for Torchwood, Sarah-Jane Smith who formed her own group, even Rose and the Metacrisis who also have a version of Torchwood in their world. They are all become a defender of Earth in their own way. 

  Some are able to somewhat returned to their mundane life and whether they were able to have a good life or not, well, the Doctor tried not to interfere or find out what happened to them. It wasn't necessary to add heartbreaks to see how they ended. But he always believe they will all be brilliant.

  But you never felt that way.

  UNIT has tons of file they collected about the Doctor and the companion he had over the years. They kept an eye on the companion from time to time.

  (yn) (ln) was a companion of the Eleventh Doctor alongside Amy and Rory. But you left him after realizing you couldn't handle your unrequited feeling for him anymore. You felt less in his eyes, not as good as his fairy-tale princess, Amelia Pond, not as brave as Rory the Roman, not as brilliant as his beloved wife, River Song. The Doctor has his own family and that does not includes you, despite his assurance.

  The last time you saw him, you had confessed your feeling for him despite knowing he didn't feel the same. For you, it might be the closure you needed to move on. 

 The Doctor couldn't say anything to you upon your confession and honestly you didn't expect him to. You had packed your suitcases, ready to leave the Tardis when he finally apologized to you. He hugged you and told you that you are brilliant and that you are one of his best friend. He didn't stop you from leaving, that hurts a little but you know it was for the best. The both of you could not handle the awkwardness after your confession. But he did tell you to call him should you need anything.

  Life after the Doctor is as mundane as you thought it would be but that is your only option. And for a while, things just doesn't work as you wanted it too and you got so sad, so depressed. It was a year later, more or less, that life gradually less painful and more bearable. You finally got a stable job and the salary is good. You are okay. 

  On 14th December 2020, (yn) (ln) disappeared. UNIT case officer on the Doctor File assumed you were back with the Doctor until a missing person report is filed two weeks later. Even then, he still think you were out there, travelling with the Doctor. It won't be the first time a companion of the Doctor is reported missing by a family member as in the case of one Rose Tyler or in your case, your work friends.

  Two years later, an FBI raid in New York revealed a strange basement on abandoned building where they found a bunch of people whom they assumed victims of human experiment considering their pitiful state. 

  The breaking news on the worldwide were talking about how these victims were actually the missing people from all over the world and they have been missing in various different years, ranging from two years up to seven years. Most of their cases has been dropped for the lack of trails of their whereabouts.

  Martha Jones has worked for UNIT for a while now and has been privy to the Doctor File UNIT has collected over the years. She has read about your file and distinctly wondered what happened to you. She had asked Kate Steward once why she didn't contact the Doctor regarding your whereabouts.

  Kate, too, has assumed the Doctor has lost you somewhere along the line of the adventure. After all, the adventures with him always consist of danger and there were many instant of the Doctor's companion files be labeled as missing or as to be assumed of the worst case scenario, dead. Also, she didn't make a habit of contacting the Doctor regarding a former companion, believing the Doctor has move on from them to new ones.

  So, imagine their surprise, when a leaked list of the victim names from the FBI case suddenly showed up on the internet with your name among them.

  Believing the case must be alien in nature, UNIT swoop in to take the case from the FBI much to their annoyance. And as Martha is charged to treat these victims, they really didn't know what to make of the case. Is it alien in nature or just plain old human cruelty?

  These victims are all malnourished, you could practically see their bones through the skins. On their arms littered many scars from oh so many injections. Their wrists were marked with the heaviness of their shackles. All of their hairs has turned silver, presumably from the experiments. They weren't responding well with the new treatments and they weren't responsive.

  You sat on your bed in your assigned room, staring blankly at the wall, unresponsive like the rest. That is until Martha mentioned the Doctor and you became hysterical, screaming and crying, scratching your skins till you drew blood. You were quickly sedated.

  Martha and Kate started to consider to call on the Doctor, believing the Doctor might have some answers in regard of your reaction of him.

  "He would want to know!"

  "Would he?" Kate asked. "Look at her."

  "I am looking! She need the Doctor!"

  "Are you sure about that?"

  "You really want to hide this from the oncoming storm?"

  In the end, Kate relented to Martha's demand to call the Doctor. 

  Kate expected that they will get the Twelfth Doctor and his current companion, Clara Oswald, but instead a young woman in rainbow striped and a hoodie appeared before them, followed by three people they assumed her new companion.

  "Martha Jones!" The Doctor smiled brightly as she went to give her a hug.

  "Doctor." Martha is still eyeing the Doctor's current body. "What an upgrade."

  "I know right?" She grinned. "Fam, this is Martha Jones, one of my best friends. And that is Kate Steward, UNIT leader." She introduced them. "They are Yaz, Ryan and Graham, my fam."

  "Fam?" Martha raised an eyebrow teasingly.

  "So what is the big emergency?" The Doctor asked.

  Immediately the mood turned sombre.

  "(yn) (ln)?" The Doctor repeated in shock after Martha and Kate explained everything to her. She glanced at your medical file and winced at what she read there. "I want to see her."

  "You will but we have to warn you, she might not react well to you, well, to the Doctor anyway." Kate said.

  The Doctor frowned.

  The Doctor, upon reading your file, know she has to prepare herself to see you at your current condition. She tried to school her expression as she walked toward you hesitantly, knowing your fragile state. It broke her hearts to see one of her best friends ended up like this. But she has to talk to you, get some answers from you.

  She bend her knees in front of you and spoke softly to you, "Hey, (yn)."

  You didn't even look at her. You were still mostly sedated.

  "It's me, the Doctor."

  That got a small reaction from you as you flinched harshly at the name.

  The Doctor noticed this as she swallowed down hard. "I have regenerated. I am a woman now. You see?"

  You glanced at her with a hint of curiosity but it was quickly extinguished.

  "I'm sorry that this happened to you. Could you tell me what happened?" The Doctor asked gently.

  You didn't answer.

  The Doctor sighed in disappointment but as she made to move away from you, you whispered hoarsely at her. Your voice is small and filled with tremor. She nearly couldn't catch what you says.

  "Where were you?"

  "I... What?"

  "Where were you? I called you. I called you. I escaped and I called you. But you hung up. They dragged me back. You didn't come for me. Where were you? Why didn't you come for me? I waited. I waited. I waited. But you didn't come." You whispered in a broken tone. "Why didn't you come?" 

  The Doctor and everyone in the room froze at what you said.

  "Doctor?" Yaz called out. "What is she talking about?"

  "I...I have no idea..." The Doctor answered in a shaky tone. "I..." 

  And then she remembered. You did call her in her previous incarnation. He was with Clara on urgent mission when he got your call just as he was about to left the Tardis, bearing some equipment he need to save the day. He was surprised to get a call from you but he was at the times in an emergency and honestly the call was mostly static. He was busy and told you to call him back again later and hung up. He hung up. He never called you back, too busy with another emergencies.

  The Doctor blanched at the realization. Her hearts shattered with the knowledge she play a part in your misery. She could have save you. He could have save you. But she didn't. He didn't. The Doctor has unknowingly abandoned you to your fate, has not even realized you were missing.

  "I am sorry. I am so sorry." She whispered to you.

  You glanced at her blankly as you shut down again.

  "It wasn't your fault." Martha tried to convince the Doctor. "You couldn't have known."

  The Doctor is feeling numb. She tried to focus on the rest of the victims but none of them in any condition or in enough of a coherent mind to talk. Between the sorrow and the guilt, she is furious at whoever did this to you. She vowed to find them and make them pay dearly for hurting you. You were still her friend, her companion and she has a duty of care. Whoever did this to you, they better be ready to face the oncoming storm, human or alien, they will all pay.

  Martha tried to calm her down, sensing her anger at herself and at whoever did this. "What she need right now is you by her side, help her with her recovery, Doctor."

  The Doctor know Martha is right but to be honest, she is afraid to face you. She doesn't know how you could ever forgive her for abandoning you in your time of need. She knew she could never forgive herself. River was right, the Doctor really couldn't handle the damage sometimes, no wonder River always hide her pain from her husband. The Doctor really is rubbish at this.

  An alarm sounded surprising the Doctor from her lament. Martha is quick to deal with an emergency when seemingly two of the victims having seizures. When they were pronounced dead on the scene, the Doctor know she has to get to the bottom of this as soon as possible before the same thing happened to you. She will not lose you to this, not when she just found you again. And God help those who cause the Doctor to lose another companion for she will show them no mercy.

       A/N: Just a short fic to pass the time. So this fic is also about Thirteenth Doctor having to deal with the 'mess' her previous incarnations unknowingly left behind. Originally I plan to make this longer with reader in a process of recovery but died halfway after reconcile with the Doctor but I just don't have the patience to write it hence I just left it at that.

It’s time to come to a proper run-through of last month’s Red Dragon Con 5 in London. Kate already wrote at length about the decision process and the run-up to the con on her blog last week. I’m afraid, I didn’t have that many qualms. When the news came through that Richard was going to attend the con, I was on those tickets as fast as you can say “Dolarhyde”. Not because of Hannibal, the fannibals or any previous con experience. In fact I had never been to a con before – and if truth be told, I never really wanted to go to a con before. But after checking the con ticket prices and making sure that flights to London in February are generally slow sellers, I reckoned that it was worth investing in it – even if only to witness the potentially one and only ever con attendance of Mr Armitage. Who knew whether this kind of event would ever happen again – with RA, that is? He had been rather shy about attending cons in the past, so this could easily be a once-off. Enough reason for me to see for myself, especially as I had experienced the fannibals as a very welcoming, nice fandom back in 2015 when Hannibal was on air. However, I was rather relieved that not only one but two of my fandom friends agreed to join me in London – Kate and Hariclea.

RA is definitely my Waterloo…

What more or less passed me by was Kate’s long battle in January with a very persistent cold that almost had her cancel her participation. We did, however, lose Hariclea as a co-con companion, as sadly, Hariclea’s mum passed away a couple of days before the event and she understandably had to cancel her attendance to go home. Nevertheless, on Friday morning, I took the early morning flight to LCR to get a few hours of exhibition hopping in before I was going to meet Kate. I made my way out to Heathrow to meet Kate in the hotel she had kindly booked. Sharing a hotel room with a stranger I had only known online and barely seen a photograph of? Of course – I have only ever met nice people through my fangirling activities. Plus, she was taking the same risk *grins*. I took the Piccadilly Line out towards Heathrow, got off at Hatton Cross, hopped on a bus, got off at the edge of the Heathrow runway, walked through a rather cold, grey, wet London day and kind of chuckled when I saw the hotel was right next to a bowling alley. Well, just in case that whole con malarkey didn’t work out we at least had some alternative entertainment…

Fuck it, Dude. Let’s go bowling!

I can tell you, there was a certain amount of excitement as I made my way to room 156 where my conspirator was already waiting for me, having checked in an hour earlier. If I hadn’t stopped smoking last November, I would’ve had a couple of rollies to calm down the nerves. (cf. a previous meeting also involving a hotel way back in 2014. I see a theme developing here…) As it was, I didn’t need any rollies. Kate opened the door, I said hi, we hugged – and we launched into a very comfortable friendship right there and then. Let me tell you, the woman is tolerant, witty and easy-going, ignoring my moody nonsense and providing the funniest comparisons from here to the Antipodes and back. We seemed to be pretty much on the same wave-length with everything over the weekend – from party attendance to fannibal defending to beddie times. Kate had me in stitches with her quips, and that alone made for three of the happiest, most carefree days of my life.

Registration

So, with the basics basically out of the way, we were looking forward to the weekend, con novices that we were. The con was billed to start at 4pm on Friday with registration. Since we had opted to stay in a hotel about 15 minutes away from the con venue, we decided to head over to the Renaissance hotel for a bit of re-con – and a bite to eat – in advance of the 4pm registration. Much to our surprise, a queue had already formed when we entered the lobby of the Renaissance hotel at about 3pm. We joined the queue – an exercise that would prove to be event-defining for the rest of the weekend… At the end of the queue we registered and received our dog tags badges for the event.

Totally reconciled with the fact that Gold tickets were sold out: Regular tickets were adorned with the Armitage. ‘A beautiful rear can also endear’ etc.

Thanks to some prior research we had also a) brought lanyards (so didn’t have to buy any) and b) signed up for stewarding at the con. Except that while Kate’s application as a volunteer had been accepted, I had never heard back from them. Kate encouraged me to try and get into stewarding nonetheless – which I did and was also “ennobled” as a con steward. This proved very useful later on. In various respects.

But first of all Kate and I finally got something to eat in the bar – and had our first *real* encounter with a fannibal, a lovely woman from Germany called Johanna, who really and totally set the tone and the bar for all subsequent interactions with the Hannibal fandom. There is next to no chance that she is ever going to see this, but if you know her, please let her know: Johanna, if you are reading this – thank you for being so kind, so funny, so encouraging. You really make a fantastic figurehead for your fandom. I enjoyed meeting you, and I regret not having bumped into you again! – You would think that you can’t lose your companions in a hotel – but you can. A lot of the communication and arranging of meetings was conducted via text message and/or Twitter DM that weekend. And that includes my roomie Kate and I. Yep, there were various instances where we had to call each other on the phone to locate each other in the hotel. Mad! Luckily fellow fan armidreamer and I had also exchanged phone numbers, and so I was able to hook up with her on Friday, too, and we ended up meeting all through the weekend. The more the merrier, right?

Anyway, the queuing continued, this time for the various extras one could splash out on. Photo ops and autographs are the big draw at cons, and I suspect it is where a lot of extra money is actually being made. Coming to RDC5, I had no intention of getting anything beyond the one autograph that was included in my ticket already. When Kate said that she was going to get a photo done, I was still undecided. However, you can’t just rock up at the photo (or autograph) sessions at these cons. Rather, you buy a voucher that entitles you to a photo shoot or an autograph. And so I decided to play it safe and bought a photo voucher – just in case. More about the whole photo saga later. And believe me, it’s a saga. If I knew it would be, I wouldn’t have bothered. I am still embarrassed. Like many other people I also had huge reservations about paying hefty prices for an autograph. Especially as autographs actually do not mean that much to me *personally*. I own a few already (personalised and unpersonalised, on photos, programmes and tickets – heck, I even have a silver “RA” on my beloved Pop!Thorin – see picture right), and I never had to pay for any of them. But then I thought I’d better use the opportunity and get a couple of autographs signed for future auctions – my donation, so to speak. And I also wanted to get a souvenir for Hariclea as a tiny little consolation for missing the con… So, whoa, 85 GBP went out the window there… (1 photo + 2 autographs). Seriously, I do hope that Richard also got a cut of that! Yep, I am still reeling myself. Don’t tell Mr Guylty, or this marriage is over! However, I’d ask you all to not be judgmental about this. Not that I mind if you were judgmental to *me* about this – I used to be the same for a long time. So, serves me right. But the other fans do not deserve any derision. There is much some to be said for and about these paid photo ops and autographs, the people who provide them and the people who buy them. And I will get to that in due course. Suffice to say that, with all that queuing done, it was already time to gather in the main hall for the big event of the day – the Opening Ceremony. Were we going to get our first glimpse of Richard? 

Opening Ceremony

Remember I said it would prove useful to sign up as a volunteer at the con? Well, we realised that when we walked into the main hall for the opening ceremony. Not sure how many rows there were in total, but the first ten rows or so of the auditorium were completely occupied already, as were the last ten. No coincidence: The first few rows were reserved for Gold ticket holders! (If you were admiring those fabulous photos of Richard taken at the con – those came from Gold ticket holders who were really quite close up to him and the other guests.) Regular ticket holders had to sit at the back. There was only a small number of rows in between that still had empty seats – and they turned out to be reserved for the stewards!! So we quickly brandished our steward badges and bagged some seats half way back the auditorium. Definitely worth while volunteering – not least because it looked as if there were not enough seats for the regular ticket holders for whom extra chairs were added at the back of the hall. Anyway, this was our view:

The red and black dot on the stage is Jeremy Davies (played a character called Peter Bernadone in Hannibal). He was the first guest to be called onto the stage, and you get an idea how many people were there and how far back we were sitting – despite our privileged steward seats… After Davies, two more guests were announced, namely Aaron Abrams and Scott Thompson. They were the Rosencrantz and Guildenstern of Hannibal (playing a bit of a comedic duo, crime scene investigators Brian Zeller and Jimmy Price) and absolute fan favourites. (You may also remember Scott Thompson from the Hannibal aftershows “Post Mortem”.) I very much warmed to them, too. (More about that in a later post.)

And finally, finally… Look at the picture above again. See the screen on the right? And further right to that, the double doors? That’s where the guests were ushered in, and wow, like at every other event I have ever seen RA live at, it gave me a total jolt to the stomach when I spotted RA there, beside the stage, waiting to be called… He couldn’t help but mess around before he was introduced and made funny shadow shapes behind the screen… Don’t you just have to love him…? I really dislike the word dork, but he really is a messer! You’ve already seen some of my pictures of the event, so I’ll put a slide show in here with the whole, unedited shebang – sorry, really not great, but just for the record.

This whole solo appearance lasted for the tiny eternity of 2 minutes, btw! As the second billed guest RA received a lot of cheering and clapping – he was the eponymous Red Dragon, after all – but not as much as Mads Mikkelsen, understandably. He looked absolutely gorgeous on stage though, not least because he was casually dressed all in black with tighty black jeans, a comfy hoodie and a leather jacket. All of the guests had directed a few words at the audience, but RA really made a nice little welcome speech that seemed a bit longer. “Some of you travelled far and braved the weather, congratulations. I didn’t have to because this is my home.” etc. He also could not resist a comment about the flower crowns referring to them as “flower heads” (although one of the previous guests – Aaron? – had used the term before), no comment 😁. His toned down facial shrubbery that was more like a slightly neglected lawn of wild flowers than a full-blown hayfield, looked rather good from far away. And from closer up, even more so, I suppose…

I have to say that I thought RA looked and sounded like a complete pro in those two minutes he had on stage. His ex tempore speech was just perfect for the occasion – welcoming people, referring to the actual day (by way of weather – so English *haha*), throwing in a little personal admission (“I’m at home”) and spreading a bit of fun with his gentle teasing re. flower heads. So yeah, I thought he came across as a confident and self-assured, a bit curious and wide-eyed about the whole event he was finding himself at, but willing to go on the journey. Again, I felt as if he really set the tone there, opening up and signalling that he was here to experience this and that he was willing to have fun. Thumbs up. Finding out that his appearance on stage only lasted 2 minutes, really surprised me. At the time, it felt much longer. But yeah, maybe time stands still whenever the master himself turns up in RL *hehe*…

Anyway, RA was then followed by the star of the con, Mads Mikkelsen. Again, he also made a lovely little intro speech, and I have to say I was very much impressed by the resounding and warm applause that he was welcomed with. You could tell that the fannibals were absolutely ecstatic to have Mads at the con. They didn’t hold back, and those kind of open admissions of love and admiration were something I really, really loved seeing all through the weekend. – After Mads had been introduced, all guests returned to the stage again. As part of the whole group, Richard looked slightly shy and awkward on stage, I thought. Not quite in his element. He was definitely the tallest of all guests, yet even as it was happening and I hadn’t even yet seen any photos of the event, it occurred to me that he looked as if he wanted to blend into the background. Up to his usual modesty, I guess, he was kind of standing one step behind all the others, kind of slouching a bit, with his hands in his pockets and his head all the way down to his shoulders. I haven’t really got any pictures of my own showing all of the guests standing there on stage, but yeah, my heart broke a little bit there – whether it was for a gorgeous guy making himself small and invisible, or for a gorgeous guy being modest and humble, it definitely added to his attraction. However, it also added to the danger of succumbing to APM…

Anyway, believe it or not, it was all a good start to the whole experience. Nice fannibals, nice fellow fans, nice roomie, nice guests, nice RA. The opening ceremony was just half an hour long or so, then the guests were all whisked away and the room emptied. We were basically done for the day. For the Gold ticket holders, it was only just getting interested though: They actually had a meet & greet with the guests – which Richard apparently was a great hit at, according to the tweets that I saw. Ourselves, Kate and I kind of hung around, thinking we might have a look at the promised party. But then we both kind of folded at about 9pm and decided to go back to our hotel instead. It had been a long, exhausting day – with both of us travelling from a different country, finding our way to our hotel, meeting each other, negotiating our way around the event – and dealing with the accelerated heart rate of being in the vicinity of the OOA… No wonder we thought we needed to lie down.

In the end, we actually ended up chatting until after midnight. The amount of processing to be done when seeing RA in the flesh *haha*… And that was only after half a day of con life… We had no idea what was going to hit us the next day…

The Royal Baby is HERE! Yes we knew that on Monday when it was revealed that Meghan Markle had given birth to a healthy baby boy… but TODAY THE ROYAL WAS REVEALED TO THE PUBLIC!

Let’s rewind real quick to Monday when we all were losing our minds that Meghan Markle had finally given birth!

On Monday morning Kennsington Palace made the announcement that baby Sussex had arrived and it was a Royal Baby Boy!

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle opted out of showing off the newborn on it’s official birthdate, quite opposite of Prince Harry’s older brother Prince William and Kate Middleton!

But Harry did gift us with this adorably cute video!

“Meghan and myself had a baby boy early this morning! A very healthy baby boy!”

Earlier this morning Meghan and Harry introduced what the world is calling “Baby Sussex” on the grounds of Windsor Castle.

In addition to the entire world’s excitement over getting a glimpse of the 7th in line to the royal throne, Victoria Beckham reacted on twitter saying “Congratulations to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on their baby boy! So Happy for you both! X VB # Baby Sussex”

Additionally, Prince Harry’s older brother, Prince William and Kate Middleton sent their well wishes via a video stating they haven’t gotten their in person meet and greet yet but it’s on the way!

We know there will be A LOT more reactions from our fave celebs so we will bring that to you later, but for now… I want to know what you think of #BabySussex! Portraits of Thunderchiefs, the Rolling Thunder Pilots of the Vietnam War

There are people who understand you well enough to challenge you but in that if-you’re-not-pushing-boundaries-you’re-not-doing-it-right kind of way — people you ultimately trust to have your back and your best interests at heart. Kate Chase, my friend, former rep and now producer, is one of those people.

She’s the engine on my new project Over War. And while there were more than a few times that I was called to step outside of my comfort zone, I’m really glad I answered.

Kate’s beloved uncle “Moose” was an Air Force pilot who had served in Vietnam and flew the F-105 as a Thunderchief. She had heard from her mom that he would be attending a military reunion in San Antonio with other Thunderchiefs and she believed that I, as a photographer who chases characters and follows faces, should get myself there.

Moving On the Wind

And I was off to San Antonio. I have always been up for adventure with my camera in tow. If there’s a whiff of a kernel of a spark of an idea for an interesting photograph, I’ll follow it on the wind. I packed up and showed up with a key crew.

Texas was hot, the hotel nondescript. But what awaited us inside was a rich chapter of American history that I believe is unknown to most. These retired pilots are an often-overlooked part of the Vietnam War — itself by the year further relegated in our national narrative.

I stood with my camera among these pilots who have not forgotten any detail of how and why they are connected.

Fly on the Wall

The beginnings of the portrait-making. Setting up and observing, I never know what I’m going to encounter in my personal portrait projects and how a day will go. It’s the beauty of the unknown.

With the Thunderchiefs, I felt like a reverent fly on the wall as they warmed up, and fell easily into their friendships forged in the most difficult of circumstances.

I like to go to the source for these group portrait projects, embed myself in the space and community they share. I’ve used the technique before, creating a studio of sorts in the very middle of the space inhabited by the group I’d like to photograph. Here we set up in a rented conference room and pulled each pilot aside during breaks in their conversations.

They didn’t say much when they stepped away from their fellow pilots, they didn’t need to it was there on their faces, the brotherhood, support, joy, pain, pride, and life shared.

As they talked to each other and then later through interviews, I heard the things said echoed in what I saw through my lens.

Opening Up

The prevailing stories and images from this controversial war, are almost exclusively those of the grueling ground war, while these airmen remained mostly stoic and silent about their experiences. The exception, I discovered, takes place at these reunions where these men with similar experiences could enjoy the precious, and blood-earned, crucible of comradeship with fellow warriors.

Upon seeing the final product and her husband’s portrait, Jan Lockhart shared these heartfelt thoughts with us:

To say I was moved by it is a gross understatement. As I scrolled down the piece, I saw many of our old and dear friends, and was so moved by the comparisons and the memories of the brave young pilots they were to the old warriors we see today. When I scrolled to the picture of my husband, I just burst into tears. His portrait, as so many of the others, looked through his eyes and into his soul…to the thrills and the tears, to the joy and the heartbreak of those days flying that wonderful machine in the most difficult air war ever waged.

These reunions are special in ways few people even realize. I have been going for a long time, and one of the things I have observed is that no one…not wives, nor children, nor parents, nor friends…truly can understand what those guys faced in combat during that war. They alone can truly know each other…the very young men they were, how they felt about everything involved in that war, how they all loved that particular airplane, and the comradeship and respect of the men they are today. I think it is one of the most important things they do…slap each other on the back, catch up on kids and grandkids, and be able to know that the men in these reunions truly KNOW them.

So while it might be easy to mistake stoicism for a lack of opinion or an absence of emotion, a few minutes in their presence and a good look through the camera, provided a sea change of perspective.

Revealed

As a photographer, I am comfortable looking for what needs to be communicated in the architecture and life found in faces and places. What I initially saw was a group of men bonded by experiences that only they understand, so much of it a glimpse into the worst of humanity.

Yet it’s as though the solemn reality of what they did, saw and lost, allows them to cherish the good stuff. Observing them and their wives, taking that closer look I could see how valuable that is, where it fits in their stories.

The Final Product

While I have many personal projects under my belt, I can say that Over War has been one of the most in-depth thus far; evolving from what I had envisioned as a series of Air Force pilot portraits to a project that — fifty years later — ultimately gives voice to these men who had a unique vantage point on the Vietnam war — an airborne perspective as they flew over the conflict below.

During this process, we’ve also been fortunate to cross paths with a number of people who are working to ensure that the individual stories and first-person accounts of these men who put themselves in harm’s way are being told. Because many of the pilots did not speak about their experiences when they returned; and it seems because few had asked and even fewer were interested, we’ve come to understand that information is difficult to source. These first-person accounts are invaluable.

And while there are not many Thunderchiefs left that can give us a window through which to view and learn from their experiences, we believe it is important that we are careful stewards of their stories, that we do what we can to make sure they are able to speak their truths, to help us and generations to come, accurately view the war.

It's been QUITE the year for the royal family. There's been no end of birthdays, weddings, engagements, anniversaries, and all kinds of other festivities.

Here are 17 major moments that defined one helluva year for the royals. 

1. Princess Diana's letters confirmed what we already knew

This year began with a bit of a blast from the past: a revelation from Princess Diana's letters, written when Prince Harry was just a boy. The letters—sent to a former Buckingham Palace steward—revealed that Prince Harry was  "constantly in trouble at school," which is not remotely surprising.

2. The Queen made history (again)

In January this year, Queen Elizabeth II became the first British monarch in history to celebrate a Sapphire Jubilee, marking 65 years since she took the crown. Congrats!

3. The Queen hung out with a super cute elephant 

A 7-year-old Asian Elephant named Donna didn't just meet the Queen this year. She got the ~royal treatment~ when she was hand-fed a banana by Her Majesty. The Queen happened to be opening a new centre for elephant care at Whipsnade Zoo in Bedfordshire, near London, when she made Donna's acquaintance. Wow, Donna's basically a princess now.

4. Prince Harry opened up in a big way

In a podcast interview, Prince Harry spoke candidly about seeking counselling after being near "complete breakdown" while living with the grief of losing his mum, Princess Diana.

"My way of dealing with it was sticking my head in the sand, refusing to ever think about my mum, because why would that help?" he said.

"Some of the best people or easiest people to speak to is a shrink or whoever — the Americans call them shrinks —someone you have never met before," said the prince. "You sit down on the sofa and say 'listen, I don't actually need your advice. Can you just listen'. And you just let it all rip." 

5. Prince William FaceTimed Lady Gaga

It's not every day that Pop Royalty teams up with British Royalty. But, that's what happened back in April! As part of the royals' Heads Together campaign to end mental health stigma, Prince William FaceTimed Lady Gaga to encourage people to speak more openly about mental health. William and Gaga talked about the importance of opening up about mental health; a cause they've both been heavily involved in this year.

"It's OK to have this conversation. It's really important to have this conversation," said Prince William. "You won't be judged. It's so important to break open that fear and that taboo which is only gonna lead to more problems down the line."

6. The princes opened up about losing their mum 

The royal family has a reputation for being fiercely private about personal matters. But, this year, Prince Harry and Prince William sat around a table with the Duchess of Cambridge and talked about the impact of Princess Diana's death on their mental health. And, this chat happened to be broadcast via Facebook Live as part of their Heads Together campaign. 

"We've never really talked about losing a mum at such a young age," Harry says to William in the film. "When you speak to other people's families, you think, wow I don't want them to have to go through the same thing."

7. Princess Charlotte celebrated her 2nd birthday🎈

When Kensington Palace releases a new photo of the royal kiddies, the nations' hearts basically explode. To mark Princess Charlotte's 2nd birthday, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge released a truly adorable photo of their daughter. SUPER CUTE.

8. George and Charlotte went to their auntie's wedding

'Twas the wedding of the year! Pippa Middleton—a.k.a. Kate's little sister—married hedge fund manager James Matthews at St. Mark's Church in Englefield, Berkshire, in May. And, yes, the royal little 'uns were decked out in their wedding garb, looking cuter than ever!

9. Prince George got bored at the Queen's birthday parade

When your great-granny turns 91, there's no end to the celebrations. And, 3-year-old Prince George looked positively tired of all the Queen's birthday celebrations this summer. 

As the royals congregated for the Trooping the Colour, the annual Queen's Birthday Parade, in June, little George was demonstrably less enthused than his mum, dad, and sister. Oh dear.

10. William and Harry shared memories of their mum 

2017 was also a year of reflection for the princes. In a documentary marking 20 years since Princess Diana's death, William and Harry revealed how much fun their mum was. "Our mother was a total kid through and through," said Prince Harry in the documentary. Harry also shared some advice his mum gave him: "You can be as naughty as you want, just don't get caught." 

"She would come and watch us play football and smuggle sweets into our socks," added Harry. He recalled walking back from football matches with five packets of Starburst in his socks and his entire shirt bulging with sweets. 

11. A third royal baby was announced! 

Just when you thought no one could ever topple Charlotte and George from their thrones of cuteness, the royal family came along and proved us wrong! 

In September, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge dropped their very happy bombshell. Royal baby number 3 will be arriving in May 2018. Get ready, ppl!

12. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle held hands in public 

Hand-holding isn't usually anything to write home about. But, when it's the first time Prince Harry holds hands with his girlfriend in public, it's a pretty huge deal. The couple appeared in public for the first time at the 2017 Invictus Games in Toronto, Canada, in September.

13. Prince Harry proved that sharing is caring

What do you do when a toddler you've never met before helps herself to your snacks? Well, if you're Prince Harry, then you go ahead and share. At the Invictus Games, the prince found himself sitting next to a very cheeky toddler, who decided to munch away on his popcorn.

14. The Queen and Prince Philip celebrated 70 years of marriage

Our beloved queen celebrated a massive matrimonial milestone this year—her platinum wedding anniversary. 20 November 2017 marked 70 years since the couple tied the knot back in 1947. To mark to special occasion, the couple released new portraits snapped by British photographer Matt Holyoak.

15. Harry and Meghan got engaged (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Just days after the Queen's special wedding anniversary, another wedding was announced. This time, her grandson Prince Harry's. On 27 Nov. Prince Charles made the announcement that his son Prince Harry had got engaged to Suits actor Meghan Markle. We later learned that Harry actually popped the question while the pair were cooking a roast chicken. Which is pretty much the most British thing ever. Awwwww.

16. George and Charlotte rocked colour co-ordinated outfits 

The Cambridge family took a leaf out of the Kardashians' holiday book this year. For their Christmas card, the entire family sported colour co-ordinated outfits. Fetch! 

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are pleased to share a new photograph of their family. The image features on Their Royal Highnesses' Christmas card this year. The photograph shows The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge with their two children at Kensington Palace. It was taken earlier this year by @chrisjacksongetty Their Royal Highnesses have also announced this morning that Princess Charlotte will attend the Willcocks Nursery School in London from January 2018. The Willcocks Nursery School has said: "We are delighted that The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have chosen the Willcocks Nursery School for Princess Charlotte. We look forward to welcoming Charlotte to our nursery in January."

17. Harry and Meghan released their official engagement portraits!

Christmas came early for all of us this year when the royal couple of the moment released their official engagement photos. And, they looked every inch the Hollywood couple. Swoon!
