Deadloch fic rec list!
There's some really enjoyable fic out there in this fandom â this is by no means an exhaustive list. In fact, my whole reason for posting it is to encourage people to explore what's out there, if you havenât yet.
That said, here are my personal favorites. I really love a fic where a character's voice has come through really well, and that's true of all of these.
Eddie, Dulcie and Cath:
north to the ocean, hotter than the sun by halfeatenmoon (explicit)
This is so hot and so funny. I love this Cath: so in-character and so completely excellent. So many of her and Eddieâs lines in this made me die laughing ("domestic"!!). And I really love Dulcie and Eddieâs vibe, here; their interactions made me flail so hard.Â
Deadloch, day eight by Despire (teen and up)
One of my favorite things about the show was the way Eddie looks at Dulcie, and how it changes over time as they get closer. This fic...has somehow managed to capture that energy perfectly, and it really got me in my feelings. I love Eddie so much and I love Eddie with Dulcie so much.
Keep On Gruckinâ by kirazi (explicit)
This fic includes a lot of little character notes that feel so absolutely right, to me, particularly for Dulcie and Cath. I love howâŠsort of shy Dulcie and Eddie are around each other. And I love seeing what Dulcie loves about Cath; I love seeing those two in a really believable, really happy relationship. Searing hot, as well.Â
house rules by halfeatenmoon (teen and up)
This has two things I love: Eddie and Cath becoming friends, and Dulcie playing the straight man/stooge who has to deal with their shenanigans. This is so in-character and so cute and fun.
despite all my bad decisions by DeanBean (explicit)
I love this version of Dulcie SO MUCH. She has a lot of overlap with how I see Dulcie, actually. I really buy her â I felt very convinced by this and like I could see the things that were happening while I was reading. Excellent, and also so hot.
In Plain Sight by applesforthis (explicit)
I feel awkward reccing my own fic. But, well â I posted it on April first, and afterward a couple people pointed out that tumblr was full of boops that day and that many people may have missed it for that reason. If you want a very character-driven, slow-build Eddie/Dulcie(/Cath) story leading to polyamory, with lots of personal growth and relationship-building and a very happy ending, then this is for you.
Abby-focused:
The difference is kissing someone you actually like by Lenore (teen and up)
This Abby is so absolutely in-character. And so is Deadloch. Can a place be said to be in-character? I donât know but this fic has nailed it. I love seeing Abbyâs ups and downs as she works on doing something daunting without the support that sheâs used to. I love how much she loves her job, and I love the happy ending.
Everything Good Happens After Midnight by skyvillage (teen and up)
This is so sweet. I really liked Abby and Sharelle being friends in canon, and this feels like such a natural extension of that.Â

the number one thing that gives these little homunculi away is that they use a photograph of a human woman as their icon on tumblr, a thing that i have never known any human women to actually do
#rare enough with menâ too#i know mike and shea use actual pictures of themselves but i'm struggling to come up with anyone else#...okay went through my following list to check#and this is wrong#2/326 do#there's taz muir and there's kate gruntledandhinged#who i would describe using the ''braver than any us marine'' meme#except that she's a ptsd therapist who works with actual traumatized us marines and could easily rebut that assertion

For my first post to my brand new booklr, I thought I would share the 12 books being released in 2023 that I'm most excited to read! I'm especially looking forward to getting my grubby little mitts upon Alecto the Ninth (whilst also simultaneously never wanting the locked tomb series to ever end), but I'm really hoping I'll still find some new favourite reads amongst the others on my list! There's also a good mix of authors I have only read one book or one series from (Seanan Mcguire, S.A. Chakraborty, Silvia Moreno-Garcia, T. Kingfisher) vs authors I haven't read from before (Cherie Dimaline, Roshani Chokshi, Dorothy Tse, Katherine May, Kate J Armstrong & Amy kKey), so I'll be so interested to see if I gain any new favourite authors to read some backlist books from too!
Here's to hoping for an excellent reading year for all of us in 2023!

I had some books I ordered come in in time for Christmas. I read Servant Mage way back at the beginning of the year - it's a neat novella about revolutions and following your own path. My cat has not interest in the book.
And I finally got my hard cover copy of Nona the Ninth. In what world does the paperback come out four months before the hardback? I wanted a really New Zealand backdrop for the books, thought about finding some flowering pohutukawa, but Rangitoto was easier. If I lived in Wellington I'd totally roadtrip these to Greytown.

Rating books I read this year:
âRed, White, and Royal Blueâ by Casey McQuiston. 8/10, I love my dumb American boy with a literal Prince Charming. Donât care about anything I love it so much Iâve listened to the audiobook 5 times this year.
âIron Widowâ by Xiran Jay Zhao. 10/10. All of this. Perfection. This might as well be a XJZ fan account. Yas Empress letâs destroy the patriarchy đ
âA Touch of Darknessâ by Scarlett St. Clair. 5/10, so many tropes but itâs aight. Decent smut but nothing to write home about. Iâm just a sucker for enemies to lovers.
âA Touch of Ruinâ by Scarlett St. Clair. 1/10. I hated Persephone and everything was just so⊠ugh. Bad. Went from questionable and tortured love interest to âI canât justify this fucking douchebag.â Didnât finish because it made me so mad.
âShe Drives Me Crazyâ by Kelly Quindlen. 7/10, cute sapphic YA. Tropes are tropes for a reason. Cute as hell tho.
âNeon Godsâ by Katee Robert. 9/10. Tropes are tropes for a reason, love this take on Hades/Persephone. Preferred the smut here to St. Clairâs work, way preferred Persephoneâs characterization here (I became a Persephone connoisseur in 2022 I guess.)
âYou Go Your Own Wayâ by Eric Smith. 6/10 Enemies to lovers trope and a dorky main character I kinda identified with. Ending felt rushed but itâs alright. Love the audiobook narration. Very quick read so itâs great for commutes.
âToday, Tonight, Tomorrowâ by Rachel Lynn Solomon. 8/10. Literally EVERY trope (well, feels like it) and very pointed âmeet cute AUâ moments that felt very self aware. Props for well done incidental Jewish rep that bucks stereotypes and doesnât involve Chanukah.
âThe Golem and the Jinniâ by Helene Wecker. 10/10. Might be the best book I read this year. A 20 hour audiobook and I listened to it twice in a workweek. It was so good. SO good. Multiple rounded characters. Could be a bit convoluted and confusing toward the end if you werenât paying attention, but I was so invested. I give this audiobook to people who want to get back into fantasy novels.
âThey Went Leftâ by Monica Hesse. 6/10. Heavy. Good, made me cry, wish a romance hadnât happened. I disagree with my library insisting this is YA, felt more adult than the âgeneral audienceâ of âThe Golem and the Jinni.â The twist destroyed me. I was a broken person for like 10 minutes working in a laboratory trying not to cry into a beaker. 9 hours but heavy enough to last a while. Would be a good emotional rollercoaster for a long train or plane ride.
âSweet Ruinâ by Kresley Cole. 7/10. It isnât good, per se, it just gets the rocks off. Decent enough and fun to have a desirable protagonist with an accent like mine.
âThe Way of Kingsâ by Brandon Sanderson. 4/10. I just canât get into Sanderson. Hot take, I know. Did not finish.
âGideon the Ninthâ by Tamsyn Muir. 10/10, love my funky space lesbians. I recommend this book all the time when someone wants a cheeky protag. The audiobook is awesome. I was SO invested in this and I canât believe I waited so long to read it.
âThe Bone Clocksâ by David Mitchell. 6/10. Very well written, I was just struggling to stay engaged with it while working. Some of the lulls made my brain check out and I would miss critical exposition. That said, very complex, great if you want to read waaaaaaay too into a book.
âA Hunger Like No Otherâ by Kresley Cole. 6/10. Once again, it doesnât have to be good. It just has to be.
âThe Lies of Locke Lamoraâ by Scott Lynch. 2/10. I hated this fucking book. Hot take in my friend group, especially since I read Rothfuss and Hearne. But I just hated it. I couldnât get my teeth into it and couldnât care about the characters. Did not finish.
âNo Other Loveâ by Harper Bliss. 6/10, cute and sweet. Love a short sapphic read. Unremarkable but good.
âThe Chosenâ by Chaim Potok. 10/10, one of my favorite authors. He just donât miss. Heavy at points but I love it.
I probably missed some but here we are. Ones I could remember off top.
