It’s by chance you ever end up in the path of the Wranglers and into Tyler and Kate’s lives.
They aren’t even looking for someone to help manage the team but even Boone and Lilly can admit that with the attention they’re getting, they need someone who can keep up.
So by chance, by luck, or all because of a tornado, Tyler ends up connecting with you through a friend of his from UA.
The job description is unorganized chaos, simply put. Managing the crew on a day to day basis is enough, not to mention helping them manage the finances, stay within legal code, managing the social media, and getting their foots in the door for grants and sponsors.
Boone’s convinced you’ll run screaming from the team all the way back to the city, Javi too, but it actually ends up to be a seamless fit.
You help Lilly and Boone with the sales, the production of merch, and all the channels. You’re even the one who sets up a Tiktok, their donations and attention increasing tenfold. You research grants and donors for Javi and Kate and you help Tyler source new equipment for the team.
When all is said and done, three months have flown by and Tyler is forever grateful you’d been blown into their path. You’ve blossomed with this crew and they’re changed because of it.
Not to mention the way you’ve grown into Kate and Tyler’s relationship. Although they never say it, unsure of how to fold you into their dynamic, you’re there in ways that complement their already existing chemistry.
Kate’s quite fond of you too, he knows. He would’ve seen it a million miles away, the way Kate’s eyes had sparkled meeting you, the way they do in the field. But she’d say the same about him, citing the way he goes soft for you in a way he’d only ever done for Kate.
The problem is - he still can’t figure out how you even managed to end up here.
“C’mon.” Javi says, nudging you. “How the hell does a city girl like you find her way to hell’s corner in Oklahoma, managing a bunch ragtag storm chasers?”
You shrug, fiddling with your beer bottle, glancing out at the group sat around the crackling fire. You and Javi are sat a top Ty’s truck, the crew looking intently at you. “You just asking or you really wanna know?”
The group breaks into various calls, corralling you into telling them.
“It’s kind of a long story.” You defend, a sheepish grin growing on your face.
Javi nudges your shoulder again. “C’mon, tell us. We barely know anything about you city girl.”
“A couple months ago, at the start of tornado season, I was in Texas, for a friends joint bachelor/bachelorette party. We were at a rodeo and I had gotten separated from the group. An EF4 hit the place out of nowhere and I wasn’t able to get back to the shelter in time. I’ve always been terrified of tornadoes, we don’t got ‘em where I’m from, but- that was something else.” You shake your head, shaking off the memories. “I should’ve died. It should’ve killed me, but it didn’t. And all I could think of was that I had been given a second chance, just barely. And what I was doing just didn’t make sense anymore.”
Boone lets out a low whistle as Javi’s hand finds your shoulder. Tyler can feel Kate tense in concern, his own brows furrowed.
“Within the week, I’d quit my job, got rid of all my stuff, dumped my boyfriend, and broken my lease. I didn’t know where the hell I was going but I knew I couldn’t stay there. I just needed to- to find somewhere, someplace, where I could do something tangible. I kept thinking that what I lived through was only a sliver of a glimpse into what y’all experience your whole lives out here and I- I just wanted to help.”
“So you found the Wranglers.” Lilly finishes and you nod.
“When I’d left town, I gave Lainey a call. Her and her fiancé had been the one hosting us at their ranch for the trip and asked Lainey if she knew of anything I could do, any place I could go. Next thing I know I’m on a plane to Oklahoma and some self-proclaimed tornado wrangler I’ve never heard of is picking me up from the airport.”
“Is this why you refuse to go storm chasing with us?” Boone calls out as Tyler sits up straighter in his chair, Kate shifting as he does.
“Hold on a damn minute.” He asks, the group falling silent. “Lainey’s fiancé, Smith, he’d been killed at a rodeo just this year.”
Your eyes are cautious when they meet his. “Smith gave his life for mine. He’s the one who got me to safety and he paid for it. I’ll spend the rest of my life making up for it.”
It goes silent in the group as you avert your eyes. After a few moments, you slide down the front of Tyler’s truck, chucking your beer in the trash.
“It ain’t your fault, you know.” Tyler calls out as you begin to walk away from the group.
You freeze.
“These tornados, they ain’t what they used to be. They take and take. Weather cares little of the price of human life.” Tyler says.
“Those reports you see on the news, they’re true. They’re getting worse every year, that’s why we’re out here. It’s why you’re out here.” Javi follows up as you turn back to face the group. “We’re gonna find a way, to make things better. We’ll never be able to stop the weather, not completely, but maybe we can find a way to keep up with it.”
“It’s okay to admit I’m not contributing much. I mean I don’t know shit about science and I don’t want to get near a tornado for the rest of my life. I’m-“
“Helping.” Kate protests. “You are. You might not think it but you are. We could barely do this on our own, we need you.”
You’re hesitant to accept Kate’s words for what they are but the group seems to be giving their consensus and Tyler’s beckoning you over to him and Kate.
“Listen,” He says, once you’re sat between him and Kate. “We might be the most ragtag bunch of hicks you ever met. But as this grows we ain’t never been able to do it without you. If we succeed, if we do this, you’ll have played no small part in it. You belong here.”
You spend the rest of the night tucked into Kate’s side the both of you quiet as the group carries on.
It’s only as the group is getting ready for bed, Tyler putting out the fire, Boone leaving to find a bush to pee in, that you speak.
“Sometimes I wonder why I got to live and he didn’t.”
Kate looks down at you. “You’ll drive yourself crazy if you go there you know. What you have that they didn’t. What you could do that they couldn’t.”
“Will it be enough?” You say but Kate has no answer for you.
Instead, she shifts upwards and away from you.
“You should really think about coming out with us sometime.” She says. “Tornados are terrifying but they’re sometimes the most beautiful things. The way they manifest, the way the world just changes. You should give it another shot.” She gives you a soft smile before leaning down to press a soft kiss to your head. “Night. Get some sleep.”
You lose track of how long you stare at the dying embers before Tyler comes back with another bucket of water to put the fire out for good.
“You couldn’t have saved him, you know.” Tyler says, setting the bucket down. “But you still have a chance to help us save others. You might not see it but we need you.”
You nod. “Thanks Ty.”
He gives you a smile. “Anytime kid. Get some rest. We’ve gotta get on the road bright and early tomorrow morning. And uh, think about changing your mind on doing some storm chasing why don’t you? There’s a whole world you’re missing out there.”
-
It’s late under the Oklahoma skyline. Your friends have either gone off to their motel rooms or are partnered up into their own conversations but you’re too comfortable to move away from Kate, wrapped around her side.
Your fingers brush up and down her skin, the dying fire crackling before you. As your fingers come to gently trace over her scar, you falter, smoothing your thumb over the skin.
“Can I ask?” You speak softly. “What happened?”
In the months that you’ve grown into this group, Kate has shared little of the story behind the scar. While you’re naturally curious, you know even more that it’s a missing piece to a girl and a relationship you’re still learning.
Kate’s eyes look up at you, firelight reflecting a soft something you can’t name. And then she sits, tugging on your hand.
She leads you to her shared room with Tyler, leading you inside as Tyler looks up from his phone he’s scrolling through.
It’s not unusual these days, to find yourself somewhere with these two. Whether it was curled up in their bed or around a fire or a diner table or in the back of a truck, you found yourself more and more drawn into their presence. The three of you were standing on the precipice is something and lately, it too often looked like you were the one hesitant to take the dive into uncharted waters.
You pause at the doorway, surveying them. “You sure?” Kate nods and you slip inside, shutting the door behind you. Kate nudges you towards the bed and you go, Tyler’s warmth radiating off of him as your back finds stability against his broad frame. Kate climbs in the bed next to you, careful to leave her legs intertwined with yours. You feel her hands reach around your body, hands grazing Tyler’s.
She licks her lips, breath shaky as her eyes flicker down to the faded tear of flesh.
“It was six or seven years ago now. This project we’re doing out here, the one you’re supporting, it all started because of what Javi refers to as my science project.” Tyler straightens as she talks. “We… we failed.”
“What do you mean?” You ask softly.
Kate’s eyes finally meet yours. “My friends, we were supposed to release the polymer into an EF1, maybe EF2. But- I was wrong. It was an EF5.” She screws her eyes shut. “I lost them one by one. The tornado took them from me and left nothing but devastation in its wake. The scar- it’s a reminder of them, of what I lost that day. The cost of what happens if I don’t get it right.”
“Kate.” Tyler says softly, a firm note hidden beneath it. Something in it tells you they’ve had this conversation before, that Tyler’s heard this story before.
You wrap your arms around Kate, tucking your head on top of hers. “You’ll get it right, Kate.” You whisper. “You’ve got this.”
-
The next morning finds you with a storm on the horizon.
You sit on the top of Tyler’s truck as he beams at you, hands on his hips. “So you coming or what, pretty lady?”
You smile at him, hands wrapped around the chipped mug Boone had lent you. Six months in the field and all you still really had to your name was your toothbrush and a pair of pajamas. “I don’t know, you promise not to drive me right into the middle of that tornado?”
Ty chuckles, shaking his head. “You’ve got my word. No fireworks or nothing. I’ll give you the best storm chase you’ll ever see.”
“Kate coming?” You ask, unable to stop the hopeful question from tumbling past your lips. He nods, though his grin falters.
“Javi too.”
You shrug, handing the now empty coffee mug to him as he offers you as hand to slide down his truck. “Just tell me when.”
No less than a half hour later, the four of you are in Tyler’s truck, cruising down an empty stretch of dirt road of an abandoned town. Your gaze is on the horizon before turning it back to the people in the van.
“So Javi, you never did tell me how you and Kate had met?”
A grin forms on his face. “Kate and I go all the way back, man. She was the OG storm hunter.”
You can see Kate smile in the rearview mirror, your eyes meeting. “They’ve got their own handshake.” Tyler comments, a teasing lilt to his voice.
“When do I get my own handshake?” You comment, chancing a glance back out the truck. “Holy shit, that’s what we’re chasing after?”
“She’s gorgeous ain’t she?” Tyler roars, the truck speeding up.
“I never thought I’d see something like this.” You breathe, eyes going wide. “There’s so little sky to see in the city. Here’s that’s all there’s to see.”
You can’t see the grin Javi is giving you, wonder taking over your features as you crane your head to look closer. “Yeah, you’re going to be sticking around a while.” He says softly. “You’ve fallen for the charm.”
“Ty.” Kate says sharply, tilting her monitor. “Do you see that?” Tyler peers out into the distance where she’s pointing. The car rolls to a stop as them and Javi start using words you don’t understand.
“What? What’s happening?”
“Do we got time to get back?” Javi says, pulling his seatbelt off.
Tyler shakes his head, pressing his seatbelt buckle as he presses another button on his truck. “No, we gotta get low. Now.” His door flies open, and you follow suit, shouting to Kate as you do, asking what’s happening.
She grabs your hand as the wind begins to pick up around you. “I was wrong.” She says. “It’s gotta be an EF3, at least. We’ve gotta get down.”
“Kate! Do you see any places?!” Tyler shouts, ushering the two of you away from the car.
She pauses, scanning the area. “There!” She shouts, pointing to a storm grate a bit farther out more towards the main road. The four of you take off, but it’s obvious you can’t keep up. The wind rages as you feel your ankle twist. The collision to the dirt hurts less than you think it’s going to as the panic in you reaches its peak.
You’re going to die here.
“No, you ain’t.” Tyler says over the wind, arms coming up to support your under your armpit.  “Not on my watch.”
Another set of arms lifts you up, as Kate shouts to follow her. The boys carry you the best they can but your eyes are blurry with panic. Kate takes you from them, helping you over to the storm grate.
“Kate, I don’t- I don’t want to die.”
“Just hold on to that.” She says firmly. You do as instructed, laying on the ground. Tyler’s body follows yours, clutching onto the grate over your body. His body covers your own, sheltering you from the worst of the weather.
It’s only then you realize you’re shaking, from the wind or the rain or the freezing terror, you’ll never know.
“Stay down.” Tyler bellows over the wind. “Stay low and hold on.”
You whimper, clutching tighter to the grate as the storm’s power increases overhead. “I’ve got you.” Tyler says, Kate repeating his words.
You aren’t sure in the haze when it all stops, just that you can’t stop shaking and the tears rolling down your face won’t end. Kate’s fingers are around yours, gently prying them from the grate as she runs a soothing hand through your hair.
“Are you hurt?” Tyler asks bending down next to you as Kate gets the last of your fingers off of the grate. Your shoulders are shaking, unable to stop the sobs wracking your body enough to answer.
“You’re safe.” Kate whispers. “You’re safe, we’ve got you I promise.”
And yet all you can do is cry. You feel Tyler tentatively reaching out for you, looking over your body for an injury he might’ve missed. His hands pause underneath the Wrangler sweatshirt you’re wearing, hesitating before they slip under. When they come back clean, he pulls you to your feet.
“I’m going to carry you back to the truck.” He says cautiously. You feel him lift you up and your hands find purchase in his shirt. “I’ve got you. You’re safe.”
By the time you reach the truck, the tears have stopped, drying in tracks on your face. “Kate.” You say softly, as Tyler sets you in the back of the truck. He glances over his shoulder, where he can see Javi presumedly comforting Kate.
“She’ll be here in a minute. You okay?”
You nod. “Just- just shaken up. I panicked and flashed back I guess. What’re the odds you almost get killed by a tornado twice?”
Tyler shakes his head. “You stick around here long enough, it’ll happen more than that. Look, we were all gonna head back to town tonight anyways. Why don’t you come back to Kate and I’s? I don’t think she’ll want you to leave her sight and I don’t want you to be alone.” You nod as Ty’s thumb reaches up to rub away some of the dirt. “You’re okay. We got you. We’ll take care of you.”
Kate returns to the truck a few moments later, wrenching the other side of the back open. “You okay?” She asks softly, climbing in next to you.
You nod. “What were you and Javi talking about?” She glances at the man before shaking her head.
“Nothing. Say, do you want to come back to Ty and I’s place? We’ll get your ankle all fixed up, some clean clothes. It’ll be a couple days before we’re out on the road again. Give you a chance to regroup?”
You nod. “That would be nice. I’d like that.”
She smiles softly, reaching out for you. “We got you.”
-
You’re tucked up under Kate and Ty’s comforter, the fan on low as your fingers find purchase in the soft material.
“Kate? It ain’t your fault.”
Your head peeks up at the low voices on the stairs.
“It is.” Kate says lowly. “It is my fault. How many times is it going to take for me to learn? She could’ve died.”
“But she didn’t.” Tyler insists. “Aside from a sprained ankle, she’ll be fine. She’ll be on the road with us in just a few days, scheduling more presentations and fancy grant sessions than we know what to do with. Fact of the matter is she’ll probably be on the phone with Lilly tomorrow morning bright and early about new designs for like, keychains or something.”
Kate sighs. “I can’t afford to get it wrong this time.”
“You’re not going to.” Tyler says, the stairs creaking, meaning he’s probably moving closer to her. “She trusts you Kate.”
“At what cost? They trusted me then too.”
“There’s no price to be paid here Kate. She trusts you, this team. She’s got us, the same way we got her.” Tyler sighs. “Let’s just get to bed okay? I wanna be next to my girls.”
Something stirs in your chest at the way he says girls as in plural but you’re too tired and strung out to dissect it. Kate slips into the bedroom a minute later, Tyler not far behind her. She climbs into the bed next to you, quick to climb under the comforter. Tyler follows suit on your other side.
“We got you.” She whispers, but this time, you think she may be assuring herself more than you.
-
This was wrong. Something was wrong here.
It almost felt, like in some weird haze, she’d lived this day before.
This was definitely wrong.
“Kate, c’mon! Help us!” Javi shouts. She breaks from her reverie, running to the boys to grab you from them.
“I don’t want to die. Kate, don’t let me die.”
But it’s some ill-fated prophecy, the way she keeps failing, because the minute the boys let go, you’re gone.
Your screams pierce through the air as all she can do as watch.
The wind comes to a stop, it all falling still around them as the boys stand there in horror.
“What did you do?” Tyler asks lowly. “What did you do Kate?!”
She freezes, unable to understand what just happened.
“How do you keep letting this happen? How do you keep failing? How come you can’t get it right when it matters?” Tyler’s shout grows.
A breeze kicks up again, a torn, bloodied Wrangler sweatshirt coming to lay at her feet.
She’s going to be sick.
“It’s your fault Kate!” Tyler’s harsh yell comes as she stands there, rain and wind whipping around her. She stares numbly at the spot where you had just been, the only thing left being the sweatshirt, feeling her fingers clench around nothing.
You had been gone in a matter of seconds, slipping through her fingers like smoke.
“No, but I-“ She licks her lips. “No, it can’t-“
It can’t end like this.
“Yes, Kate, yes it is!” Tyler yells, coming closer to her now. “It’s your fault that’s she’s gone! It’s her blood on your hands! It’s your fault she’s dead, just like all the others!” Tyler shouts, pacing closer to her. She flinches, raising her hands to cover her ears to block out his yells.
“Owens, stop.” Javi calls out but it all sounds muddy as she squeezes her eyes shut, willing for this to be over.
Behind her eyes, she could still see the terrified look in your eye, the way you had pleaded with Kate to not let you die. The scream you’d let out as the wind had pulled you away from her.
Suddenly, there’s a hand on her, wrenching her wrist away from her ear.
“It’s your fault she’s gone. It will always be your fault.”
Her eyes fly open, mouth around a scream.
-
Kate’s scream shatters any illusion of silence in the house as both of your heads whip towards the bedroom.
You’ve barely had a chance to rise from the table, where you’d sat with Ty in the morning light, Tyler moving closer to the bedroom, when Kate’s rushed footsteps pound against the creaky staircase and round the corner.
Her eyes are wild with fear but her body sags in relief at the sight of you. She pulls you to her chest, all but collapsing into your embrace, a sob escaping her chest.
Tyler’s brow is furrowed in concern, at least what you can see of him over Kate’s shoulder. One hand stays wrapped around her waist, the other coming to rake your nails gently under Kate’s sleep shirt as she continues to sob.
“It’s all my fault. I knew the storm was going to be too big- but I-“
You shush Kate, continuing her movement. “I’m okay, Kate, it’s okay.”
“It’s not!” She shouts, wrenching herself away from you. She wipes at her eyes with the back of her hand sniffling as she does. “It’s not okay! I could’ve gotten you killed!”
“Kate, it’s not your fault.” You try to soothe, taking a step closer to her but all that does is prompt a fresh round of tears.
“Yes, it is.” She nods sadly. “Yes, yeah it is. It was my fault then and it would’ve been my fault now too.”
You shake your head, closing the distance she’s tried to create between the two of you. “No, it’s not Kate.” You say firmly. “It wasn’t your fault then and no one blames you for those losses. It wouldn’t have been your fault yesterday and I wouldn’t have blamed you either. The weather we chase is unpredictable and ever-changing. Loss is the name of the game we play.”
She heaves a breath, her shoulders shaking. “You’re not an acceptable loss.”
“Kate, if I had died yesterday, I would’ve died knowing you and Ty had done everything you could’ve to keep me safe.” You cup her cheek, brushing away a few tears as you do so. “You did everything you could’ve for your friends back then too.”
“I couldn’t save them.” She croaks. “I couldn’t save you.”
You crowd her space, nudging her nose with your own. “Hey, you know you did, right? You saw the signs. You knew to take shelter, where to hide. You did save me. The part that matters isn’t that you could’ve failed but that you didn’t.”
Kate’s forehead meets your own, her hand finding your fingers. “I- Please don’t leave.” She whispers. “Please don’t leave me.”
You feel breathless at her request, at the desperation in her tone. Your eyes meet Tyler’s.
“I’m not going anywhere.” You whisper back. “I’m here Kate. We’re here.”

Husband!Tyler Owens x Wife!Reader, Ex!Javi Rivera x Ex!Reader
Summary: 5 years ago you used to date Javi Rivera before the incident with your friends. You, Kate, and Javi all go your separate ways. What happens if 5 years later you all reunite and Javi sees you again married to a certain cowboy?
warning: Language, Javi being jealous, Mentions of sex but none, Javi is kinda an asshole and leaves a hand mark on Reader (you) and kisses you, use of Y/N
"Here let me help ya down sweetheart," Tyler says holding out his hand and helping you down from his truck as fans surrounded the truck of the run-down hotel with music blasting "Who that?" Kate asked Javi in the distance Javi rolled his eyes "Tyler Owens" he said before Scott jumped in "Hillbilys with a YouTube channel" Kate looked at the crowd as Tyler started to hype up the crowd.
After all the chaos some people started to leave pleased to have met The Tornado Wranglers. "Y/N?" you heard someone say behind you. You turned around to look at them "Kate? Hey" you said as she smiled at you "So I still see you Tornado Chase" She said holding her clipboard "Ya" You said looking at her just then you heard a familiar voice behind her "Kate you ready for-" Javi stops in his tracks as he sees you. "Y-Y/N?" he said before smiling nervously "Hey how are you doing" He said before hugging you tightly. He felt your body tense up as you slowly hugged him back. "Hey Javi," You said before slowly pulling away "I'm alright..you?" you asked him as he smiled "Been better but more happy to see you"Just then you felt an arm around you.
"Hey sweetheart," Tyler said looking at Javi "Javi.." he said as Javi started to connect the dots "Your dating Tyler Owens!?" he said his voice getting angry as Tyler smirked cocky "Married actually" he showed Javi your wedding ring "Married?! What the fuck!?" Javi yelled as Kate pulled Javi back "Javi we have to go.." she said dragging him away to his group and his van. Tyler kept on smirking watching him get dragged off "Didn't like how touchy he was being had to come to rescue ya" He said stealing a kiss from your lips as you giggled.
"So that's your ex?" Tyler chuckles "Really upgraded since then" He smirked at you as you frowned "Me and Javi didn't end on good terms but don't say that about him..." You said as Tyler looked at you
"He dumped you and you worried about his feelings still sweetheart?" he said raising his eyebrows, making you frown more at him. "Just forget it hon," he says grabbing your hand and walking to your hotel room with you.
A few days went by and the air felt tense you could cut it with a knife Javi kept looking at you trying to find any chance to talk to you without Tyler and anyone else around "Why him?! Out of everyone you married him!?" he yelled as you kept walking away from him. As you kept walking he pulled you back to him and made you look at him. His face was angry "I'm talking to you" He said in a whisper "You dumped me Javi not the other way around...you have no right to choose who I marry and who I don't...you, not my boyfriend anymore... I like to keep I that way.." you said pulling your arm away and look at the hand mark he left. "Don't you remember all the good times we had..." he pleaded with you like that would change your mind.
"Y/N..." he said leaning in close to your face "Remember all the fun times...when we went out...when we stayed in...when we got drunk and we would have the best sex ever...?" he said with hurt in his eyes "Javi.." but before you could finish he grabs your cheeks and pulls u in for a kiss. You jump back quickly "Javi what the fuck!?" you yelled at him as he stared at you "I.." you didn't let him finish "I'm married! And you can't just come back into my life 5 years later after dumping me feeling sorry for yourself!" you kept yelling which made a lot of people including Kate and Tyler who looked at each other and started to walk towards you both.
"What's going on here?" Asked Kate before Tyler was by your side quickly "You harassing my wife?" Tyler asked his voice getting serious which was a very rare sight. Javi looked at you "Y/N....remember when I was your man...?" he asked his voice still pleading with you. You felt Tyler's body tense up at Javi's words and he clenched his jaw in anger as Kate pulled him away again as he kept yelling. Tyler looked at you "What was that about..?" he says "I-I don't know!" I said and he sighed and grabbed your hand and kissed your wedding ring before pulling you to him gently and hugging you as you hugged him back.

Feeling kind of sick tonight
All I've had is coffee and leftover pie..
Today was just the worst. Shitty day at work, your in-charge was being a sweetheart to everyone except you, it’s like the whole world was playing a cruel joke on you today.
With no will to eat, you mindlessly looked in your fridge, the cool air and cool glow hitting your skin. Your eyes skimmed through something to hopefully make your feel better, and your eyes landed on a small glass Tupperware.
Peach cobbler pie.
You sighed, taking it out of the fridge and setting it on the counter, brewing some black coffee. The paperwork you had been procrastinating on started to pile up, and you had some weather reports due tomorrow. You needed the bitter drug, the pie there to balance the taste with its tender sweetness.
You were tender once; you were sweet once…
It’s no wonder why…
Life became hard and bitter once you moved away.
Well, did you have a reason to stay?
After that EF5, after holding onto Kate in that underpass for dear life, making sure she didn’t get sucked into that twister, Javi found you two and called the cops to help you both out.
Thing is, you always knew Javi had a thing for Kate. Even when she was dating Jeb, you saw the way he looked at her, the same way you’d look at him. And Kate didn’t ignore those looks of his, nor did she not notice them…
Ooh, still you take up all my mind…
You almost confided in Addy or Praveen about your feelings. You loved Javier. Ever since you both got super close in college. Ever since he’d always treat you like a good friend would. You ran on this high, you chased to be in his line of sight, craved his attention… You were soft, you were tender, you were sweet. You wanted to be it all, for him.
I don't even think that you care like I do
You were known as the ‘ray of sunshine’ or the ‘sweetheart’ in your friend group because you were just so nice. Mostly in the hopes of wooing Javier whenever you could. Make him think what it would be like to date you. Part of you loved to see his smile, loved the ‘thank you’s he’d give you, collecting them like shiny rocks. You usually found them on your morning walks, giving one to Javi whenever you thought he’d like them. But he just put them in his bag and forgot about them a few days later.
I should stop, heaven knows I've tried…
Days in college were spent fantasizing about him; about the way his arms would feel around you. He rarely hugged you. 3 times, to be exact - on his birthday, the day you both passed your finals, and when he found you were okay after the EF5. You couldn’t help but want to call him, text him, but what would you say?
And if he really wanted to talk to you, why didn’t he already? It’s been 5 years since you both have exchanged a word. 5 years since you two have seen each other’s faces. you had changed since college, no doubt. your hair was different; layered. Your style changed a little bit too, you wore makeup to work, in the hopes of being treated differently. You looked prettier with makeup on, anyways. Just a little highlighter, mascara, blush… nothing too overboard. Part of you dolled yourself up in the hopes of running into Javi in the streets somehow.
‘I should stop’ you thought to yourself as you got ready one day for work. You stared at your reflection, not knowing what you were looking for. Sighing, you finished up your makeup, surrendering to beautification, heading off to work.
“Someone’s here for you in the conference room” a co-worker told you. You gave them a confused look, walking to the conference room, to meet a familiar mop of curly hair - a lot shorter now, and the man you loved in a suit. Javier Rivera.
Of course he convinced you to come back to chasing storms. Of course he said it’ll be almost like the old times. Of course Kate was coming too.
You wanted to say no, you wanted to say you couldn’t, but he came all the way to look for you; once tender and sweet. The prospect of someone looking for you was something you dreamed of since you were an angsty teen. The prospect of someone caring about you enough to come back…
At least you tried to decline.
One day, I will stop falling in love with you
Some day, someone will like me like I like you…
The drive to Oklahoma was meant to be awkward. It meant to be tense. It meant to be hard on Javi. To make him feel bad. For you to act all pouty and mean just because you could. Just so you could if not tell, show him how hurt you were when he just disappeared.
But when he started to smile, crack jokes, retell stories, you couldn’t help but be nice in return. The rushing feelings came back, and for a moment, you forgot about Kate. You forgot about life being bitter and hard. All you remembered was being sweet and tender, because with Javi, it was familiar. It was natural. It felt like home.
Every soft look from Javi made you fall harder for him. To be treated like he once did to you. Friends. Best friends.
You both drove to Oklahoma, which wasn’t too far exactly, and he offered if you wanted to go out for dinner with him and Kate.
You wanted to be hard and bitter again.
As you and Javi went into a local diner near a motel, you both saw Kate sitting in a booth, waving to you. Or so you thought - she was looking Javi in the eye, who had a grin on his face. He sat in the booth with Kate, opposite to you. They both smiled at each other, and you wanted to be swallowed by the same EF5 your friends left in, because maybe, just maybe, Javi would have cared more about you if you were dead.
Until then, I'll drink my coffee, eat my pie
Pretend that we are more than friends…
“… just some coffee and peach cobbler pie, please” you flashed the waiter a warm, tired smile. You didn’t look at Javi or Kate, rather traced the wooden table, stared out the window, faked a yawn, bounced your leg.. of course they didn’t say anything to you. They had their little side conversation.
As your face was turned a 90 degree angle from the two, from the corner of your eye, you saw Kate squeeze Javi’s bicep. You downed a mouthful of coffee, coughing after. Javi handed you a tissue, not sparing you a glance as he laughed at something Kate said.
Suddenly you have no appetite.
Then, of course, I'll let you break my heart again
You put your head down on the table, Kate glanced at the mop of hair on the table
“Hey, you doin’ okay?” she asked softly, Javi looked at you for the first time during dinner.
“Do you feel sick?” He asked brows knitting in concern.
You shot up, rubbing your eyes. “Yeah, this coffee made me feel sick.” Javi looked at your basically untouched pie, but empty cup of coffee, and back into your rosy eyes.
“Get some rest, yeah?” Kate suggested. Javi nodded. You sighed.
“Yeah, okay. Goodnight, you two” you rubbed your face, giving them a small wave. They both smiled softly, waving back.
As you reached the exit, you looked over your shoulder as much as you didn’t want to, and saw the two smiling and laughing again.
With a heavy heart, you checked into your motel, took a sip of water to calm your body down, and with one glance in the mirror, you broke down; crying yourself to sleep, with tears staining your face and your pillows, the land of rest took you in for the night.
I'm just tryna understand what I am to you
More than songs, we've exchanged
Midnight calls, sunset views
Over the next few days, you spent them chasing with Storm Par. Of couse Javi went with Kate. She had more genius than you did, apparently, even though you two were both equally smart.
Javi talked to you that morning, his charming grin greeting you along with the early morning sun.
“Dandy weather, yeah?” he nudged you, trying to get you to cheer up. You rewarded his efforts with a small, half hearted smile.
You both had a pretty genuine chat, just like in college, until Kate joined you two. Then again, you were invisible. And the tension between the two was as strong as a supercell. You were obviously hurt, because your time in college was so much… richer. Late at night after curfew, you two would sneak out because you two were the only ones up for that kinda stuff. You’d go to the roof, stay up there talking all night then watch the sunrise together. Now, the only one he orbited was Kate, Kate, Kate.
Then, it was time to chase.
You paired up with Scott instead, being a little emotionless that day, and gave him a respectful nod of acknowledgement. The chase was silent apart from the orders coming from the radio. No conversation was initiated - you didn’t wanna have another breakdown.
For the first chase, which failed because Kate had a PTSD attack, you saw Javi comfort her after they got back to the motel; The sky was now dark, every storm chaser had a bonfire up, the atmosphere was enough to heal Kate alone, but of course, Javi was there for her too.
Your heart clenched. You remembered how hard you cried last night, almost suffocating against the sheets many times. The room was dull, taunting, and the only thing who could have helped you in that moment was Javi. But why would he see your pain and not Kate’s first?
You all gathered around the bonfire - the Storm Par crew, some other group called the Tornado Wranglers, some local chasers and what not. You saw the tall, orange fire. It looked inviting. Your breathing stilled, your body relaxed, your mind wandered.
You were disassociating, looking at everything from the 3rd person POV, the chasers in a circle around the fire, Kate and Javi next to each other a few seats away from you, talking like normal. You kept saying Javi’s name, yelling it, screaming it, but no matter what you did, he didn’t even spare you a glance. So you looked behind, turning around, and saw the fire. Without a second glance at him, without thinking, you walked into the warm, welcoming flames, feeling it consume you, swallow you whole-
At the sound of everyone toasting to more twisters, you snapped out of your little morbid daydream. Looking over at Javi and Kate, you saw her leaning against his side, his arm around her waist, smiles on their faces. Kate whispered something into Javi’s ear, and he looked down at her with a grin. She cupped his cheek, your eyes stung, he leaned in, capturing her lips in a soft, romantic, kiss.
Promise I don't mean to cry
But I get overwhelmed and confused
If only you knew what I felt like
Your eyes stung, your bile rose in your throat, your lungs felt like they were collapsing and you wanted nothing more than to be disoriented, sedated, dead.
Breathing hard, you fled for the fields. Knocking over one of Javi’s beer bottles by accident, you speed walked, then ran to the backside of the motel, where there was a patch of grass. The surroundings were dark, the crickets seemed to taunt you, and your head was spinning. You needed more air than you could take in, your head had a dull, throbbing pain in it, you wanted to throw up, purge those feelings onto the soft grass.
You cried, covering your face and cried. Hard. Your whole body was stiff.
He kissed her
He kissed her. Oh he kissed her, he kissed her, he kissed her.
You didn’t even hear the footsteps behind you. You didn’t even register Javi running after you to check in on you.
“God damnit, are you okay? What’s wrong?!” He panicked, not touching you, though he knew you loved physical touch.
Why would he, anyway? He had a girlfriend-
Kate Carter.
“Leave… me a-alone” you wheezed, hiding your face, curling into a ball onto the dirt.
“Please” you begged, “I-I can’t be down here, I need to go ho-home” you cried “it- it’s a family emergency.” you lied through your teeth. Of course he wouldn’t question it. He didn’t care enough to even look at you. Why would he question a pretty good reason?
Javi looked at you, his face concerned. He nodded.
“I- Okay, alright. Take care, (Y/N)” he said softly. Genuinely.
It took all your willpower not to launch yourself into his arms. But the thought that Kate had been in them more often than you did sickened you.
One day, I will stop falling in love with you
Some day, someone will like me like I like you
So you ran through the fields, ran until your lungs burned, until you were going to faint, running on nothing but peach cobbler pie and coffee since almost 24 hours ago.
Your legs gave out, and your hands embraced the ground below, seeking comfort from Mother Nature which nobody could give you. Your body was folded and like a wounded animal, you let out guttural, gut wrenching sobs. You wanted to unsee it, to pour Javi’s beer over your eyes, to gouge them out for their sockets.
“Make it stop” you sobbed, choking on your saliva. “Please, make it stop” you prayed to the heavens above and the spirits below. You needed this to stop. The pain, the jealousy, the love to stop.
You fell asleep there in the field, Your breathing ragged, yet eventually even. You mumbled, whimpered, cried in your sleep. Seeing Javi kiss Kate. Seeing Javi hug Kate. Seeing Javi move in with Kate. Seeing Javi say ‘I love you’ to Kate, and Kate saying ‘I love you’ back. It was all Javi and Kate, Javi and Kate, Javi and Kate…
It wasn’t until one of the Wranglers found you that you woke up.
“Hey, it’s the girl from Storm Par!” The blonde man said to himself. You stirred, groaning.
“Tyler Owens?” you blinked your eyes open, he offered you a hand, which you ignored and got up.
“What’re you doin’ out here in the fields?” He asked, chewing some wheat between his teeth.
You hesitated. “Long story, but if you can drive me to the train station, I think we have enough time to go over it.” you asked with a pleading look. “Please, Tyler, one favour”
Tyler sighed, giving up “Sure. That’s what friends are for”. You smiled, thanking him.
Then you both disappeared off to the train station at 6:35 in the morning, where Tyler was so kind to lend you a ride. You went over the whole story, since college to now. 5 years worth of internalized drama, not sparing a single detail; He nodded along, gave his animated reactions, gave his input and advice where necessary. And soon enough, you were at the train station.
“Thanks for the ride, Tyler.” you thanked again, genuinely “and dont tell anyone about this” you said seriously, referring to the situation you described.
“Scout’s honour” He gave you his flashy smile “Take care out there, cowgirl” he chuckled. You nodded and smiled, grabbing your bag.
“You too”
Until then, I'll drink my coffee, eat my pie
Pretend that we are more than friends
Then, of course, I'll let you break my heart again
Back at home, you delved back into work, relieved to be away from the new couple. Life was bitter and hard, accompanied by your peach cobbler pie; you never really got over Javi and Kate, you just tried forgetting about them. Whenever you read a romance book or watched some rom-com, you imagined the couples to be you and Javi. Sometimes, you’d dream of you and Javi together, as a couple.
But as you dreamed of this, a few states away, Kate was living your wished reality.

part one // two // three // four
Nellie woke up early the next morning as usual, grabbing her cup of coffee and sitting on the front porch in her chair despite the rain. She loved hearing the storm on the tin roof, and she was glad for her early morning as she watched Tyler exit the house.
"Morning," she smiled as he jumped at her voice. "You heading out?"
"Yeah, didn't want to wake ya," he blushed. "Left you a note."
"What's the note say?" Nellie stood up and put her cup down.
"Got my phone number," he said almost nervously. "Asked if I could take you out sometime."
"Want my answer now?" She tilted her head at him.
"Only if I'm gonna like it," he laughed.
"You will," Nellie said before standing on her tip toes, grasping the back of his neck, and pressing his lips to hers. Tyler was quick to drop his flannel and duffle, wrapping a hand in her hair, and his arm around her waist to pull her body flush against him. The two of them made out like teenagers on the Cooper's front porch, before Tyler's phone buzzing broke them apart.
"Can I call you later?" Nellie said breathlessly. "Just for the official answer?"
"That'd be fine," Tyler huffed out a laugh, leaning in for one more kiss. "You call me if you end up heading back out this week with Javi. I want to be able to keep track of you if you're out there."
"Yes sir," she said teasingly as she handed him his flannel. She squeezed his hand before he walked down the stairs, through the rain to his truck. She headed inside with a hum, refilling her coffee.
"Nel!" Kate yelled through the door. "Meet us in the barn." And so with that, came a day of sitting in the barn while Kate and Tyler spoke in science speak about where their research five years ago had gone wrong. Kate and Tyler eventually decided that they would head out and try to find a small cell to trial the theory again. Nellie was thrilled to be sat in the back as the two of them debated the merits of different cells, cracking the window to feel the chase settle into her bones.
"Look at her," Nellie whistled as they hopped out of the car to view the storm in front of them.
"Look at the updraft! The stirations!" Tyler yelled, Nellie grabbing her camera and taking a photo of him, the look of pure elation on his face.
"It's perfect," she said softly, turning up to the storm.
"Gorgeous," Tyler said under his breath as he peered back at a beaming Nellie, ignoring Kate's gagging motion in the background.
"C'mon, its gonna give us something," Kate yelled, gesturing for them to hop back into the truck. Tyler hopped behind the wheel and headed full speed for the funnel.
"Time to harness up," he told the girls, grabbing his own straps.
"We're just gonna drop the trailer in it's path right?" Kate asked in shock while Nellie began to giggle, doing up her own straps.
"This is really dangerous," Kate squeaked as Tyler drove them straight towards the vortex.
"Gotta drive into it," he said with a huge grin. "Can't miss from in there!" Kate began cursing as Tyler drove right up to the tornado, putting the truck into the path.
"Don't worry, this thing is rigged for an EF1," Tyler began explaining. "We've got extra weight, anchors. We'll be fine."
"Oh you're an asshole," Nellie cackled as Kate grabbed the 'oh shit' handle, cursing up a storm as Nellie let out a huge sigh and rolled her window back up. The three of them felt the wind whipping the sides of the vehicle as Tyler brought the truck to a halt, dropping the anchors. Tyler and Kate waited till they were in the right position before Tyler released the barells.
As the tornado moved past, the three of them laughed in astonishment as they saw the other side of the storm. Their giggles were interrupted by Kate hopping out to see if the solution had actually worked. "What a feeling," Nellie laughed as she unstrapped and Tyler came around to her door, opening and snatching her out before spinning her around.
"Did it work?" Nellie asked Kate who was watching the storm continue it's path.
"No," Kate said lowly, crossing her arms.
"Y'all hungry?" Tyler interrupted the silence, wrapping an arm around Nellie's shoulder and leading her back to the truck. The two pulled out the sandwiches they had packed, sitting up on the hood of the truck while Kate paced.
Kate and Tyler began talking through the science of it all, trying to determine what could've been the problem. "We need a better model," Nellie said in between bites of her sandwich, causing the two to look at her. "What?"
"How do we make a better one?" Tyler asked.
"Bully Javi," Nellie shrugged, leaving the other two in silence as they finished eating. The three made their way back to Kathy's, and by the time they got there, Javi was sat outside with Scott.
"Leave them," Nellie murmured to Tyler on the front porch as Kate walked out to Javi, the man spotting the two over her shoulder.
"They ever...?" Tyler asked under his breath as he opened the porch door for her, following her inside.
"No," Nellie shook her head. "There was another guy. But don't think that stopped Javi from feeling it."
The two made some coffee while waiting for Kate, heading out to the barn once they heard the Storm Par trucks peel off. "Got the data," she said as the two of them joined her in the barn, ignoring their gazes as Nellie walked over and wrapped her in a hug from behind.
"Let's do this," Tyler said, pulling up the software they needed. Kathy came to join them, her and Nellie watching as Tyler and Kate brainstormed.
"So we need to make it rain," Tyler deduced.
"They were cloud seeding in Lawton a few years ago," Kathy said. "Silver Iodide."
"We could do that," Tyler grinned.
"No faster way to choke a tornado," Kate grinned as Nellie and Kathy clinked their beers together.

The Heart of a Tornado ⚡ Tyler Owens
I do not own the movie Twisters or its characters, only my own original character and her family members. I also do not own the plot, only the additions I've made to it. This is going to be broken up into parts, Tyler not making an appearance until Part II.
Fandom: Twisters
Pairing: Tyler Owens x F!Reader
Word Count: 1,738
Part I
•─────⋅🌪️⋅─────• •─────⋅🌪️ ⋅─────•
Thunder roared and lightning flashed as Ada Scout made her way into the large building owned by the National Weather Service, her badge attached firmly to the pocket of her high-waisted, black flare-leg dress pants. Her stilettos clicked against the linoleum flooring as she neared the elevator that led to her office, her cream-colored long sleeve turtleneck sweater keeping her warm from the chilled air. She pressed the button to the twelfth floor and ran a manicured hand through her blown out dark brown hair, a sigh leaving her perfectly shaped and painted lips. Another day, another dollar. Another storm to report and not chase.
The elevator made a pinging sound as it reached its destination, Ada Scout being the first to step off. Heads turned towards her as she made her way to her office at the end of the hall, whispers following her. They all saw her as the rumored 'Queen of Storms,' a woman able to predict the deadliest of natural disasters as easily as she breathed. It was a title she both loved and hated, reminiscent of what an old friend back home used to call her. She took a seat behind her desk, setting her black leather designer bag on a hook under it and logged onto her computer to prepare for yet another day of tracking and reporting the weather.
"Miss Washington, there's someone here to see you." Her assistant Crosby said from the doorway, an apologetic smile on his youthful face and an even more apologetic cup of black coffee in his hand which he extended to her. She took it gratefully, giving him a nod of thanks before she inquired about the unexpected visitor.
"And who would that be, Crosby? I don't have any meetings until this afternoon." She lifted the cup to her lips, taking a small sip before setting it down on her desk. It was unusual for people to visit her office without appointments as she was normally on the road, so she found it odd someone had come to see her unscheduled.
"He says he's an old friend, Miss Washington." The young man said hesitantly, lifting his hand to scratch the back of his neck awkwardly. He was probably just as taken aback by an unannounced visitor as she was and she couldn't help but smile reassuringly.
"I see, thank you for informing me. You can send him in." She said before turning back to her computer to type in her login information, a radar of the entire United States showing on one screen and all types of data on the other. They were data collected from the storms, storm physics as they had called it back in her college years. A slight frown tugged at the corners of her lips as she noticed an increase in barometric pressure in the collection of states deemed 'Tornado Alley,' her home state of Arkansas included within them.
"Look at you all professional and boss-like." A familiar voice came from the doorway, capturing the attention of the woman. Ada Scout looked up and couldn't help but widen her eyes at the sight of her college friend Javier Rivera dressed in a suit, his once shoulder-length curls cut neatly around his neck and ears. She got to her feet, approaching the man to hug him. She hadn't seen him since the aftermath of the incident where they'd lost 3 of their friends in a field project gone wrong, the two of them and their friend Kate Cooper being the only to survive.
"Javi, what are you doing here?" She asked once they'd parted, her hands coming to rest on her hips in a way that was professional and yet, not intimidating. He shrugged, a charming grin on his face as he responded to her question.
"I didn't hear from you much after you moved so I asked Kate when I saw her a few days ago if she had. She said it had been a few months but that I could find you here. I actually wanted to discuss something important with you, a project I'm working on if you will." Ada Scout seemed shocked that he'd managed to see Kate let alone get her location from her, but she nodded and gestured to the seats in front of  her desk.
"Of course, have a seat and we can discuss it. I must admit I'm surprised you got ahold of Kate, she kind of went radio silent on the world after the incident." Ada Scout said as she resumed her seat at her desk, crossing one knee over the other elegantly. Javier nodded, a grim smile on his handsome face that was more accentuated by the haircut and lack of facial stubble.
"So did you if I remember correctly. I had to find out from your Mama that you'd moved to Florida to track Hurricanes instead of Tornados for the National Weather Service." He said a bit tensely, but not in a way that was cruel or rude. It was as though he was stating an uncomfortable fact that she couldn't outright deny. She had cut off everyone after the EF5 tornado, unable to live with the guilt that clawed at her throat that her, Kate, and Javi had made it out alive when their friends hadn't. She shook her head to clear her thoughts and folded her hands in her lap politely.
"I won't deny that I did, I do apologize for that. I just-I couldn't handle the guilt right away, not knowing that we made it out when the others didn't. But enough about the past, what's this new project you speak of? You aren't still chasing storms, are you?" She asked, keeping her tone calm and even although she felt anything but.
"Actually I am, I'm working with Storm Par now to track tornadoes before they touch land to see if we're able to prevent them from creating mass amounts of damage back home in Oklahoma. I have access to military grade weaponry now from my time in the service and from willing investors and I came to see if maybe, just maybe you'd be willing to give me a week to help further my research. I proposed the idea to Kate too, but she denied me immediately. I just can't keep sitting and watching small towns like our own get destroyed by weather we should be able to predict the path of. To get ahead of so people are more prepared." He revealed, his words making the breath in Ada Scout's lungs still for a moment. He wanted her to come home for a week? To face the past she had tried to forget?
"Javi, I'm proud of you. Really, I am. But I haven't been back home in 5 years and while I'd love to help you figure out how to predict the path of a tornado and help decrease the damages they cause, as well as inform people of their development sooner, I can't just leave Florida. I have a job here, it's hurricane season. I do all of the reporting and research on them." She frowned.
"Please Ada, I know how important your job is here and I know how much you despise the idea of going back, but think about all the people we can help. That we can save." Javi leaned forward, placing his hands on his knees and Ada Scout sighed. He threw out a good point, one that tugged on her heart strings more than she cared to admit. If they could find a way to predict these vortexes, then maybe people wouldn't have to lose everything the way they had 5 years ago. Maybe they would've been able to save their friends if there had been more data.
"Fine. But I'm only staying for a week,  I can't afford to give you more time than that. Not with it being hurricane season." Ada Scout said with a sigh, her blue eyes showing she was firm on her decision and wouldn't be willing to negotiate more time away from Florida. Javier grinned and jumped to his feet excitedly, clasping his hands together.
"Wonderful! I'll book your flight and motel room, you don't have to worry about a thing. Just bring that brilliant brain of yours." He said in a rush, already pulling out his phone to book their flights and accommodations. "I have a team of the best and brightest, you won't be disappointed in the slightest. They're intelligent, hard working, and brave."
Ada Scout nodded at his words. She didn't dispute that Javier had put together a team of the world's best and brightest Meteorologists, she just didn't know where she'd fit into the mix. Sure, she had studied Meteorology in Undergrad and pursued three Doctorates in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, Earth Science, and Storm Physics. But she didn't chase storms anymore, especially not tornados like she had back in her younger years.
"Just let me know when my flight is so I can be prepared." She told her college friend, already typing up an email to her Boss to let him know she'd be using a week's worth of her PTO days this upcoming week. She knew he wouldn't mind, the old man was always pressing her to use them and take a vacation as all she did was work and go to the gym. He replied within seconds of her email being sent, letting her know he'd call her if he needed her and to enjoy her time back home. He also included a 'Be Safe' closing line, the man seeing his employees more as his own children than working machines. She stood from her desk to walk Javier to the elevator, her stilettos clicking as she walked. She didn't know how to feel about what she had just agreed to, how it would be being back after so many years, or what to think about chasing the same type of natural disaster that had caused her, Javier, and Kate to lose their closest friends.
"I'll see you Monday in Oklahoma!" Javier grinned before he exited her office and stepped into the elevator, waving enthusiastically as the doors closed and he descended to the Main Lobby. Ada Scout made her way back to her office, almost flopping down into her chair and putting her head in her manicured hands. What the hell had she just agreed to?
