"What is that you add to my coffee, Katya?" Goncharov asked, eying the unlabeled brown bottle wearily.

"It's vanilla extract, Goncharov," Kataya answered, adding a last splash and then carefully putting the lid back on the bottle. "To make your coffee taste better."

"You are a generous wife, Katya," Goncharov said, not touching the mug. "Only, I can't help notice that you did not take any yourself."

"The vanilla extract is getting very expensive," Kataya answered. "And I'm worried the bottle won't last. I want my beloved husband to have the sweet taste of vanilla in his coffee."

"But what about my lovely wife?" Goncharov asked.

"Your lovely wife knows by now what expectations she can place on life," Kataya answered and held up her own cup, as in a toast. Goncharov hesitantly held up his own.

"If I were the suspicious type, I might think you try to poision me," he said with a little laughter that never got as far as his eyes.

"What difference would it make if I were?" she said, not taking her eyes of the cup
