THE DEATH OF APRIL – Review
DISTRIBUTOR: Terror Films
SYNOPSIS: Meagan Mullen, an aspiring teacher, packs her bags, leaving her family and friends, and heads east for a new job and a new apartment/home of her own. She keeps in touch and updates those back home through a video blog. As her life becomes more complex and emotional, strange things begin to happen in her room and her home, the camera capturing all of it. The film documents the unsettling activity as interviews with family members, friends, and professionals try to solve the mysteries surrounding Meagan.
REVIEW: Ruben Rodriguez’s THE DEATH OF APRIL is a mockumentary/found footage hybrid that weaves together these elements to present a haunting supernatural tale that feels like what you might expect from an episode of unsolved mysteries.
Rodriguez does a nice job of creating the character arc for Meagan. I'm not sure how much was scripted and what was improvised, but there were moments I had similar thoughts about what was going on before the characters uttered a similar point of view. Some of the secondary characters, such as the policeman, paranormal investigator, and the psychologist, could have used a polish on the dialogue. I think what makes this film more engaging than some other films, the premise allows the filmmakers to present videos from the events as captured on friends’ and family members’ phones, and content from her laptop credit as provided by the local police department. However, I doubt the police department would have provided some of the footage for an ongoing investigation. Likewise, the setup of her brother meeting someone on his flight and how she figures into the story is just a glaring coincidence and what she does feels like a bit of a stretch. There is also this element that is a sibling rivalry about recording things. I just thought it went too far when the brother showed up with a professional camera. I get his fascination with it, but he is presented as a law major and I felt it was a bit much, distracting.
The film features a nice ensemble cast. Actress Katarina Hughes as Meagan Mullen does an excellent job of creating an innocent and annoying character who unwittingly steps into a nightmare. There are moments where you feel for her, but the character is such that I never empathized with her. Adam Lowder plays Meagan’s older brother and actor Travis Peters portrays her father. They present these stressed out family members consumed by the tragedy of Meagan’s story. Their performances were engaging and made me forget I was watching a work of fiction for a time. Stephanie Domini is Meagan’s mother. I’m not sure if it is the writing or her direction, but there was an aspect to the character that just did feel as engaged or emotionally invested as the rest of the family, or as mother should be. Also, her makeup was immaculate, whereas the rest of the family looked emotionally stressed. The secondary characters are organic enough. As I mentioned, I wish they had tightened up some of their dialogue and possibly done a couple of more takes.
Clearly, THE DEATH OF APRIL is an independent/home-grown genre film. The costumes feel like the talent provided their own wardrobe. It’s not bad, it just feels a bit raw. The cinematography is solid, the editing is good, the visual effects and some nice touches, but I did find them very scary, creepy at best. Where there could have been a lot of shaky camera work, I applaud them for having the characters put the camera down whenever possible to keep the viewer focused on the drama. Meagan’s apartment (it frustrated me that she kept calling it her home) was a bit sparse and too clean given some of her habits she presents.
Given the nature of the film, you have to give the filmmakers props for what they’ve pulled off. The film merits programming in an independent genre festival, and I’d be curious to see what Ruben Rodriguez might pull off with a slightly bigger budget. It’s a clever blending of found footage and a mockumentary. I understand how some might compare it to “Paranormal Activity,” but I was never a fan of that film and think this is better.

FAVORITE FIRST WATCHES OF SEPTEMBER
picking up the cordial invite of anyone to do the game by @anyataylorjoys
I tag @thetudorslovers @streatfeild @randomprivateer @ainvege @zizzlekwum @katarinas-redemption @trishvaylar and anyone who wants to
I'm very chaotic when it comes to watching movies - I never know if I'm gonna end up rewatching a movie I've watched 20+ years ago (because I don't remember any of it), watching exclusively someone's filmography, or just pick a random movie.
It's been mostly Jackmantember XD
Paperback Hero (1999) – it's what I'd call a classic romcom. Just look at the premise:a local truck driver secretly pens successful romance novels using his best female friend's name who's a badass pilot. Things got complicated when a publisher gets into his small town in the middle of nowhere with an offer... It's perfect for an evening watch. Light, funny, hilarious, and comforting.
Reminiscence (2021) – a post apocalyptic sci-fi-ish neonoir with a twist. Reviews are mixed, but I'd recommend you watch it yourself. I liked it, and it hit just the right spot at that time, and honestly, made me cry. If you liked the Black Mirror episode about erasing/rewatching memories, you'll probably like this movie, too. Definitely not the kind of a movie to watch if you want to turn your brain off for the evening—there's too much stuff going on, but the pacing is really slow, almost dragging... But, again, I needed something like that.
Swordfish (2001) – wild 00s thriller I can't believe I've never watched before lol. Hot men, hot women (bisexual disaster alert), covert ops, tons of money, spies, hackers, shadow/puppet governments, conspiracies and whatnot... Gimme all, gimme moar. I don't care if some say Hugh Jackman wasn't believable here as a hacker. I actually like his version of a hacker more rather than a glassed-geeky stereotype that keeps popping up everywhere. And yeah, for those who care, it's 00s, so beware of 18+ and dubious consent and whatnot.
Prisoners (2013) – I know the director D. Villeneuve because of Sicario movies, and I can't believe I've never bothered to watch this. Villeneuve's movies are something between a chokehold and smothering. So I knew what I was getting into, but this was before Sicario, so I was curious to see where he started. This is not an easy watch. It starts off a beaten premise—there's two small girls missing, there's a cop who tries to do a right thing, and there's a father who thinks that trying is not good enough. From this point forward, the movie peels off the layers of the seemingly 'decent' neighborhood and its folks. It's a very unsettling movie, with a raw, gut-crushing performance from Hugh Jackman.
The Interpreter (2005) - yay, not a Jackman movie. This is a solid typical for 00s with its style and pace thriller about an interpreter for the UN who hears something she isn't supposed to (something on a very rare African dialect she knows) and becomes a target. Nicole Kidman as an interpreter and Sean Penn as the FBI agent tasked to protect her have quite interesting dynamic.
Australia (2008) - You either like Baz Luhrmann style or you hate it. I'm not his fan, but this epic saga about an Englishwoman who inherits a ranch in northern Australia was a revelation. Jackman here is a drover—the guy who droves cattle, horses, etc., to another location for a small commission. There are too many themes raised—racism, colonialism, the WWII, and the greed and betrayal. And how to stay human where everyone seems to have lost humanity. It's not easy to watch because the pacing is quite slow, and it's almost 3h, I think? But it'll leave its mark, trust me.

well if i didn't hallucinate this jack hughes has been called lil jizzy before as a nickname which certainly isn't boring. but there's no way in hell i'm using that for him
okay i think in my heart of hearts I knew that (kept remembering pk subban calling him something heinously awful but just thought it was "jack-off"-esque) but. agreed. can we call him jazz for his unpredictability and smooth(skating)ness. can we call him jeff in honour of mr skinner (same reasons as jazz). can we call him 2 time Olympic champion katarina witt. not LIL JIZZY

writeblr intro!
Well, hello there! Welcome to my page! Thought I'd finally get around to writing and pinning an intro, seeing as my writeblr recommendations post has gone STRATOSPHERIC and I've followed so many new accounts!
I'm Jeb (he/him), 20 years old, and an aspiring writer, poet and disaster dork from New Zealand (who currently lives in the UK - England, to be more precise). I'm a huge lover of writing and reading science fiction works, particularly hard sci-fi - Arthur C. Clarke's Space Odyssey series and his novel The Songs of Distant Earth were the works that inspired a young me to start taking writing seriously. I also write fanfiction, romance, horror, a smidgen of fantasy, spy fiction... whatever takes my fancy, basically! I also love writing and reading poetry, and hope to have some of my poems published professionally by the end of 2023!
Outside of writing, I'm a huge motorsport lover. Formula One is my main passion, and in fact I originally joined tumblr to post about my then-WIP, The Edge Of Control. TEOC may be in cryogenic storage, but my love of speed and high-octane racing remains: I regularly watch F1, IndyCar and the World Endurance Championship. I also love spaceflight, astronomy, Shakespeare, teen movies from the 80s/90s (ESPECIALLY John Hughes' work), many cheesy romcoms and lasagna. (What? It's literally the perfect food!)
Right, now with all that out of the way, let's get onto the real good stuff... (sorry in advance for the lack of taglists, I haven't remembered how they work!)

Selena does not feel late, but in technicality: she is, isn’t she?
The festivities had already begun by the time she arrived, but that had been expected—after all, for an event so anticipated, why should one wait even a moment longer than necessary before indulging in the music of the night?
Selena feels what should be an uncharacteristic degree of nerves, but all the same: she meets the attendant at the door and receives her brooch.
And so, she feels, the night truly begins.
Tracker.
Selena’s Brooch: String of Pearls Collected Brooches:
Black Feather: F!Alear, Hugh White Feather: Forde String of Pearls: Minerva Small Bell: Katarina, Artur Teardrop Crystal: Andrei, Forsyth
(Outfit + description beneath the break.)
Two layers, though the verdant green obscures most of what is underneath. Heels are less sharp than what she normally wears—it is less likely to tear the hem of a dress or harm someone’s feet if she is not as aware as she should be.
Gloves as well, though they are simple, as is the aim of her outfit. Star-shaped earrings as opposed to her usual gemstones. Hair is tied into a bun, and there hang two braids she did herself. She hopes they look nice, though she doesn’t often braid her own hair.

Upcoming OC Fics
Holding myself accountable by separating my OC's into fics I've published and fics I haven't. I promise some of these will be on the other OC masterlist soon.
Allison Steele Everyone knew the name Allison Steele. She was one of the top actresses in Hollywood, walking red carpets and appearing on magazine covers. No one knew Allison. Not really. When the holidays allow her to retreat from the glitz and glam of LA to her old home in Michigan, she encounters an old flame in Quinn Hughes… maybe the one person who will always know her.
Andrea "Andi" Archer Mat, Anthony, and Andi have been best friends ever since they met during the New York Islanders 'Pucks and Paws' calendar photo shoot. They were inseparable and they would stay that way. Or at least, that’s what they believed. Until the universe interferes. Can their unbridled, carefree, teenage love outlast the harsh realities of their lives? Or will they finally have to grow up?
Eira Selkies have faced many traumas at the hands of sailors, none more so than Eira, whose trauma transformed into rage. When ships got caught in storms and threw men into the dark water, was it the sea that dragged them down to meet their fates, or her? But when the pirate Jamie falls into the waves, Eira spares him. This act of mercy is the catalyst for a reckoning as dichotomous as the ocean itself.
Elizabeth Astor Elizabeth has it all: a successful acting career, a dream husband, and a beautiful home. She’s worked hard to to separate herself from the ghosts of her past. But it seems as if the past may have determined her future, in all its painful agony. But when Colton Parayko – an old flame who still holds a piece of her heart – returns to her life, Elizabeth must ask the question: is love enough to change our fates?
Gemma MacKinnon Being Nathan MacKinnon’s sister comes with its upsides. Something Gemma actively takes advantage of: the guest room she claims after her breakup, the parties, and the attractive men – like Ross Colton – that offer an escape. But when something temporary turns into something more, Gemma will have to face a downside of being Nathan MacKinnon’s sister: his overprotective wrath.
Hadyn D'Arcy What should’ve been an innocent comment made by her boyfriend Brady, sets off alarm bells in Hadyn’s head. Her fear fuels her choices and her decision in turn causes another, even more destructive spiral. Will Hadyn and Brady be able to recover, or will their mutual failings lead to the destruction of everything they thought they knew?
Jade Wilson When Jade steps into her favorite dive bar, she doesn’t expect to run into a local celebrity. However, this Sidney Crosby isn't a star. He is simply… tired. Of everything. Jade offers an escape from the scrutiny, the pressure, the fear, and soon Sidney finds himself falling for the girl who saved him just in time. But does he truly love her? Or does he just love the way she makes him feel?
Jocelyn Gauthier Jocelyn knows that she is lucky to have a best friend like Anthony Beauvillier. Who else would do such incredible things for her? Things such as: inviting her to join him at Mat Barzal’s wedding, making playlists for her… sharing a hotel bed… buying her wedding guest dress… staring at her with such tenderness that she feels like her heart might explode. That’s just what friends do – right?
Josephine Moreno Adrian Kempe has always prided himself on being steadfast, hardworking, and private. However, the personality traits that he curated were stunting him. Then by chance he meets Josephine; the bright joyful free-spirit that coaxes him to loosen up and enjoy the California sun. And he does… for a few months. Until the serious side of him calls for something more. A yearning that may not be mutual.
Katarina "Kit" Michael Kit is stuck, in every sense of the word. Stuck in a job she hates, in a city she doesn’t love, with no real friends of romance in sight. But when Brayden Point blows into her life and turns her world upside down, she is transported into a relationship as golden and bright as the afternoon sunlight. But they both must eventually face the harsh truth: summer can’t last forever.
Laurie Granger When Laurie invites a handsome stranger into her bed two days before the month-long lake house getaway her friends arranged, she didn’t think much of it. But when her hookup turns out to be her old friend Mat Barzal – a fact that she only realizes when he waltzes through the front door of said lake house – Laurie leans that the universe has a way of falling to place, albeit unexpectedly.
Margot Thomas After seven years with hockey superstar Nathan MacKinnon, Margot knows what the world expects. But when a fight about that looming expectation leads to an act of betrayal which cumulates in an unexpected breakup, Margot finds refuge in Seattle. Her relocation opens her to a new and unexpected connection – a connection that will send shockwaves through not only her life but also Nathan’s.
Naomi "Ivy" Doran Ivy prided herself on knowing what men wanted and she played each role well. It was her way of achieving at least a taste of the dream life that she had desired but quickly learned was unachievable. But then she meets Tyler, who is so much her mirror that it both intrigues and frightens her. Does her dream life exists with him or will they both be unable to let go of their outlaw ways?
Sabrina Brooks When country music artist Sabrina Brooks first met Tyler Seguin – one third of the band Lonestar Renegades – she knew their relationship was going to change her budding career. Two years later, when headlining Stagecoach Music Festival along with her now ex-boyfriend’s hand, Sabrina realizes how right she was. And decides to thank him; because there wouldn’t be this if there hadn’t been him.
Taika Salo Magic was dying from the world but Taika was determined to keep it in her life, much to the displeasure of her betrothed, Gerard. During one of her ritual walks in the forest, Taika meets Nico. He sees her passion for the unknown and vows to teach her all he knows before she is forced to give it all up. Soon, their meetings turn from lessons into something more.

Mission To The Unknown
9 October 1965
The only standalone regular episode of the show's original run, it serves as an introduction to the 12-part story The Daleks' Master Plan. It is notable for the complete absence of the regular cast and the TARDIS; it is the only serial in the show's history not to feature the Doctor at all, although William Hartnell was still credited on-screen. The story focuses on Space Security Agent Marc Cory (Edward de Souza) and his attempts to warn Earth of the Daleks' plan to take over the Solar System.
The Myth Makers
16 October - 6 November 1965
Based on Homer's Iliad, the First Doctor (William Hartnell) and his travelling companions Vicki (Maureen O'Brien) and Steven (Peter Purves) land in Troy during the Trojan War. The Doctor is captured by the Greeks and forced to formulate a plan for taking the city, while Steven and Vicki are captured by the Trojans and forced to devise a means of banishing the Greeks; the latter duo meet Katarina (Adrienne Hill), who becomes a companion by the serial's end.

Cannot stress enough how much of just. An asshole character James Frey is as a person it's incomprehensible how he exists as an entity
- He originally had a writing partner for Lorien Legacies who he shared the pen name "pittacus lore" with until two books in, when he pulled the rug out from under Jobie Hughes copyright wise and did it so thoroughly that Hughes can't even discuss the books on social media anymore
- All of his books come out of this intern ghost writer factory called "Factor Five" and there's no official record of who wrote what and who authored what side story and who edited which thing and I don't think they know. I think everything just gets passed around in giant paper stacks
- He's a racist idiot who doesn't know any of the four countries along the Himalayas exist. Especially not Nepal
- He blocked people on twitter for discussing ships back in the day which is hysterical
- HOW COULD I ALMOST FORGET THE MOST BONKERS THING. He wrote an autobiography called "A Million Little Pieces" about his battle with addiction and impulse control and his health...that was entirely made up. None of it is true NOT A SINGLE WORD. THIS BOOK MADE IT ONTO OPRAH'S BOOK CLUB. HE LIED TO OPRAH'S FACE!! I forget why he admitted it but subsequent printing have a label on the front marking it as fiction. Imagine bullshitting a sob story that hard
- He almost won a "Worst Erotica Award" in 2017 for his book "Katerina." There is a character that's killed early on in LL named "Katarina." And yes I read parts of "Katerina" and YES it's the same character. You can unpack that I'm not doing it
- Did I mention this dude makes most of his money off of copyright schemes? Because he does. That's what his writing company is
I know there's stuff I'm forgetting and there's things in LL I don't wanna unpack I just need you guys to know that this man makes no sense

hi pauline! do you have any quotes/poems about the rain?
“I woke in the night and heard the rain. No more sleep then, at least for a while, so wholeheartedly did I lie and listen. For doesn’t the rain descend to us so importantly? What have we, in the whole theater of our inventiveness—all five continents of it—so wonderful as this machinery of the wild world: water, falling out of the sky! The wheat and the lilies grow, or don’t grow, depending on it. In autumn the trees fairly blind us with their color if the year’s rain has been generous. The ponds freshen, or dry to a mere succulence—marshlands or even deserts—if rain has not come richly enough, or if it has not come not at all.”
—Mary Oliver, from her essay “Comfort”
“Rain finally came + it’s beautifully cool. Wonder how long it will last. It was marvelous because it started suddenly and then was alternately terrific and gentle. I think of you all the time and therefore have little to say that would not embarrass you, for instance my first feeling about the rain was that it was like you.”
— John Cage, from a letter to Merce Cunningham
“It is raining and I am watching the rain…The rain falls not because it needs me, and I watch the rain not because I need it. But we are as united as rainwater is to rain. And I am not giving thanks for anything…Not even thanking God or nature. The rain doesn’t give thanks for anything either. I am not a thing that gives thanks for being transformed into something else. I am a woman, I am a person, I am an awareness, I am a body looking out the window. As the rain isn’t grateful for not being a rock. It is rain. Perhaps that is what we could call being alive. No more than this, but this: alive. And just alive with a gentle joy.”
“Just imagine how today I felt so happy that I started pacing around my room until my legs felt tired and my head went dizzy. Just imagine how it was raining and I thought of you.”
— Clarice Lispector, from “Such Gentleness” and “Letters to Hermengardo” in Complete Stories, tr. Katarina Dodson
“Love is like an aroma, like a current, like rain.”
“You rain on me—I sky you. You’re the fineness, childhood, life—my love…blue tenderness—”
— Frida Kahlo from love letters
