The Blacklist - Brainstorming Raymond Reddington's Fingerprints and DNA.
Also posted on Reddit.
A little theorizing.
Red's fingerprints.
In the pilot episode, Red is identified as "Raymond Red Reddington" by FINGERPRINTS and by a visual identification from the Assistant Director of The FBI Harold Cooper. Red's fingerprints were a match to the prints of Raymond Red Reddington stored in the FBI's database [AFIS]. RR was on The FBI's Most Wanted list for Treason among many other charges.
We later found out in Season 4, Episode 22 that Assistant Director Harold Cooper did consider taking DNA from Red in the pilot but only in so far as he suspected that Red and Liz might be related. Liz: Procured a sample of Reddington’s blood? From evidence? That’s tampering. Cooper: Yes. And I should’ve done it the day he surrendered.
Red's DNA
Red is an imposter and not the real Raymond Reddington as is later revealed in So how did his fingerprints match?
The writers may have given a possible explanation.
Samar: What’s with the long face?Ressler: We pulled a print off the Fowler crime scene.Samar: Reddington’s?Ressler: Possibly. If it is, it ties him to our murder. Haven’t run it yet.Samar: And you don’t know if you should.Ressler: Oh, I know I should, but if I do, this could all end and we might end up in jail.
Gale: And? Ressler: It didn’t match. Gale: [ Chuckles ] What? Ressler: The print it’s not Reddington’s. Gale: That’s impossible. Did they even run it through AFIS? Ressler: Yeah, the unsub wasn’t in the system. Gale: Well, there you have it. The system’s rigged. Ressler: What are you talking about? Gale: [ Chuckles ] The system’s rigged by Reddington, for Reddington. It’s the only explanation. I mean, he’s he’s got somebody on the inside. You said so yourself. Ressler: I was kidding.
Liz: How’d you do it? How’d you change the fingerprint? Red: The fingerprint? Liz: Don’t play dumb. The one Gale and Ressler found that connects you to the death of Diane Fowler. Red: I assure you I know nothing of it.
Additional:
Gale: He’s listening to “Sundown.” The strum of the guitar, the voice of a man who’s seen too much sorrow. You know, there is a chance this music was on before Reddington got here.
Doubtful that music was on. Red put that record on. This was an alternative explanation to "the prints didn't match Reddington"
more wild speculations:
Conclusion (Imho): The show is trying to say that the system is rigged by Red. It's the only explanation. Not surprising given the episodes Room 417 and The Morgana Logistics Co in Season 10.
Fingerprints and DNA cannot be changed even in the universe of The Blacklist. Not even Red's. Rigging/falsifying/manipulating on the surface is just trickery. The show told us how the magicians do their tricks but they also told us how the truth is easy to unravel. [proper testing, etc]
Katarina faked the DNA report to fool Kirk into believing he was Liz's father. Liz took a new test between her and Kirk and it was revealed that he was not the father. Retesting properly would reveal the actual truth.
Same thing with The Alchemist episode. Yes. medical science is portrayed as being competent. Just like they don't show the FBI being incompetent all the time. The DNA from 4.22 ACCURATE. The DNA from 5.22 ACCURATE. The Dna report between Red and Liz that Liz ran in Episode 1.02 would have been accurate. There is a reason the show couldn't and didn't address running a DNA report between the two in the beginning of the series or even throughout the whole show. It's the biggest mystery so understandable the show needed to preserve this secret to stay on the air. The DNA from 5.22 between the real RR and Liz matched as parent/child. Red's and Liz's would also match as Parent and child because Red is the Mother.
The Philomena Episode
Agent Gale was trying to solve the murder of Diane Fowler. What was shown was that when Red was at Fowler's house, he handled the record and the record player.
Those things were scrubbed and cleaned of any DNA or prints. The chair Red was sitting in had no trace of anything. For some reason, the record brush was the only item that had many fingerprints on it.
*There is a reason the writers wrote this and it was a big part of the episode.
More speculation and questions:
Is it possible that Red's imposter prints aren't in the system and those were his actual prints on the brush?
Are the prints in AFIS Reds or the real Reds?
Why did his prints match the real RRs in the pilot but not the brush?
*****Does Mr. Kaplan and Dembe clean up after Red [wiping down fingerprints and DNA] so Red aka RR isn't tied to new crimes? doubtful. Red leaves his prints and DNA everywhere and I don't think Red cares if he is tied to new crimes. But if Red is tied to crime and they have DNA and prints left behind from say Red... then this evidence can be loaded into the system and if Red is ever captured and tested, his prints and DNA will match the unsubs and his identity would be questioned. I think.
I've always maintained that Red switched out his prints with the RRRs in the system and those prints on file are Red's. But I'm reconsidering.
Bonus Gif:
Relevant screencaps and/or gifs
Finally, Dembe has cleaned after Red as well.

I think Ressler’s gonna find out Red is Katarina, then hire Herbie to do a touch DNA test on Diane Fowler's record brush. When he gets the results, he’s gonna find out the DNA is male... so it can’t be Red or Kate.
Gale: He’s listening to “Sundown.” The strum of the guitar, the voice of a man who’s seen too much sorrow. You know, there is a chance this music was on before Reddington got here.
The voice of a man... and it was Ressler who took in the tape-recorded voice of Katarina in Minster D’s episode. Gale not only profiled a male killer... he profiled the idea that Red didn’t put the music on. It was on when he got there. Their male DNA will tie Anti-Rederina fans over the break... only to come back to find out Red is actually female, and he framed someone for Fowler’s murder.
Ressler: Because dead men tell no tales. Even about their seed.

I just rewatched the classic scene at the end of The Cyprus Agency with Red and Diane Fowler, and I would love to hear what other people who accept the truth of Redarina think about the exchange between Red and Diane about Red's "family."
Fowler: "I know the truth, Red... about that night... about what happened to your family. Do you want to know the truth?"
Red: "More than anything in the world. But if you know the truth, Diane, then somebody else does too."
How do you justify this in the context of Redarina? There is absolutely no doubt that the show's official answer to the question of "who is Red?" was given at the end of season 8 and that the answer is that Red is Liz's parent, formerly Katarina Rostova. However, I think there is room for debate about when the writers decided to go in that direction.
I think Diane's assertion that she knows what happened to Red's family could be explained by her likely belief that Red is the real Raymond Reddington, whose family went into Witness Protection, but I don't think this is a great explanation.
However, I think Red's comment about wanting to know the truth more than anything in the world is proof that Redarina wasn't the plan from the beginning, but rather became the plan sometime during the middle of season 2 at the earliest (when Katarina's name was first spoken). What questions would a man who was formerly Katarina Rostova have about his family's fate? He knows where Dom is, he knows the real Reddington is dead, and he has been watching over Liz from a distance for her whole life. Of course, you could just say that Red was lying to Diane about wanting to know the truth in order to keep up the real Reddington persona, but why would he lie about this to a woman he is going to kill anyway?
Would love for someone to come up with a great explanation for this, so I can stop thinking about it all the time lol.

My Hamefura Original Characters Part 2
More of my original characters for Hamefura. Like before, all of these characters are free to use as long as I’m credited. Again, thanks to @dulcito-on-ao3 and @logo-comics for inspiring me to do this.
Part 1 - Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Part 6 Part 7 Part 8
Marquis Norman Lambert - the father of Phoebe Lambert, an intelligent man who is proud of his position and achievements and is a bit arrogant. Nevertheless, he is loyal to the king and has a cordial relationship with Prime Minister Dan Ascart. He resembles his daughter a lot with dark brown hair and glasses. He is the Minister of Finance and a decently powerful earth mage.
Marquis Gaston Russell - is Vincent Russell's father, and a narcissistic, chauvinistic, and egotistical man who seeks to increase his power and prestige. He has the same misogynistic thinking as his son and disapproves of women participating in "men stuff" - especially if those women are more skilled than the men. He was Radea Ascarts's original fiancé and hates Dan Ascart for 'stealing' her from him. He has red hair in a ponytail and yellow eyes and resembles his son a lot, but burlier. He is a powerful fire mage and a skilled hunter who loves to brag about the beasts that he has killed. His family is subordinates of the Burke Family, and he is an occasional ally of Marquis Jacques Alarie.
Edward Grant - the oldest son of a count and a member of the Duelist Club. He is arrogant and overconfident in his skills and likes to brag about his skills to anyone who wants to listen - and to do that, DO NOT want to hear. He has a fragile ego and does not react well to losing to someone he underestimated. Despite this, he is loyal to those he considers his friends and protective of his family. He develops a grudge against Katarina after the Duke's daughter soundly defeats him in a sword duel. He is the same age as Katarina; he has black hair and green eyes and has strong water magic. He is friends with Isaac Alarie and Richard Vallier.
Richard Vallier - the youngest son of a baron. He is intelligent and observant, often acting as the voice of reason amongst his friends - especially Edward. He is somewhat arrogant regarding his intelligence and has a rivalry with Phoebe Lambert over which of them is more brilliant. Like Phoebe, he dislikes that Katarina Claes is allowed to be in the Student Council Room despite her low grades but doesn't directly confront the Duke's daughter. He is the same age as Ginger Tucker and Fray Randall; he has long sandy hair in a ponytail and pale green eyes behind glasses. He has strong wind magic.
Milton Fowler - a high-ranking Ministry official. He is one of the few people aware of the existence of Dark Magic and knows that Katarina Claes possesses a Familiar of Darkness. He is a corrupt and greedy individual who will gladly take bribes and support secret, illegal experiments. He hates Larna Smith for some reason and wishes to bring her down. He has dark hair and cold, yellow eyes behind rectangular glasses. He is the illegitimate son of a noble and a powerful wind mage.
James Coleman - is Viscount Coleman's second son, Thomas's younger brother, and Keith's half-brother. He is an arrogant and conceited person, but he is responsible and treats his servants well, unlike his older brother. He is closest to his mother and doesn't have a high opinion of his father due to the latter's playboy behavior. He loathes and fears Keith due to his origins and powerful magic but acknowledges that Keith now has a higher status as the Claes' heir.
The next group are actually unnamed minor characters whom I gave names and backgrounds:
The girls who bullied Maria because of her high grades:
Elaine Quinn (Dark Dress) - the daughter of a Viscount family. She is a typical spoiled and arrogant noble girl but has an inferiority complex regarding her magic, so she tries pushing around those she deems inferior. She can be impulsive when upset and not think about the possible consequences of her actions, like trying to use magic against another student. She hates Maria because she appears to get privileges despite being a commoner and "inferior." Her Fire Magic is of average strength.
Daniela Rosales (Red Dress) - is the daughter of a Baron family and is related to the Flores Family. She has an inferiority complex regarding her family's low status, so she bullies and mocks others to feel superior. She is cowardly when confronted by someone of higher rank, and she can be pressured to act as someone's lackey. She is jealous of Maria because she has powerful friends despite being a commoner. Her Fire Magic is decently powerful.
Claire Chopin (Blue Dress) - the daughter of a Viscount family. She acts like a typical spoiled and arrogant noble girl, but, in reality, she has an inferiority complex related to her weak magic. She is rather intelligent and has high grades though not enough to be in the top twenty. Although she backs off if a person of higher status confronts her, she is not a coward and will not be pressured into becoming someone's lackey. She is jealous of Maria for having rare and powerful magic. She has water magic.
Beatrice Fernsby (Green Dress) - the daughter of a Baron family. She has an inferiority complex related to her low academic rankings despite her decently strong magic, so she acts superior and bullies others to feel better about herself. She is jealous of Maria because of her high grades. She has earth magic.
Noelia Flores’ lackeys from Verge of Doom:
Evelyn Edwards (bob hairstyle) - the daughter of a count; is a typical spoiled and arrogant noble girl. She is a childhood "friend" (lackey) and admirer of Noelia Flores and is always willing to do what Noelia says - though this is both because of admiration/respect and fear of the other woman. She has decently powerful Wind Magic.
Bianca Rossi (twin tails) - the daughter of a count; is a typical spoiled and arrogant noble girl. She is a childhood "friend" (lackey) and admirer of Noelia Flores and is always willing to do what Noelia says - though this is both because of admiration/respect and fear of the other woman. She is Malva Rossi's younger twin sister, and their relationship is decent though they are not too close. She has decently powerful Water Magic.
And finally, Yandere Girl (also from Verge of Doom):
Lady Lisette Hyacinthe (aka Yandere Girl) - is the daughter of a Viscount family. She tends to fantasize, especially regarding romance, and becomes a bit crazy if things do not go as she imagined them. When she's not obsessing about her fantasies, she is actually a nice and friendly person who likes to garden and collect pretty things. She has weak earth magic.

They’re Better Not Go There!!!
*BLACKLIST SPOILERS*
They’re really doing it aren’t they? They are really going to make Red Katarina and pretend that makes sense. The voice and image overlay. The bubble girl house in the flashback. The insistence the real Raymond is dead. The parallel shots of child Katarina and the re-made Red. The everything about you is a lie callback.
NO! NO! NO!
1) Katarina was in Bubble Girl’s house, but that was not the correct emotional response. Red was fond and nostalgic about bubble girl. He ripped the panel off to see the height chart. He blew up the house because he was haunted by what happened there. Nothing traumatic happened to Katarina in that house. She was not fond of Jennifer, nor interested in her growth. She did not “raise her family” in that house (Fredrick Barnes). She would not spend her free time restoring and then privately viewing a film strip of her lover’s child whose life she destroyed (The Front).
2) The “You will always be her father Sam” speech implying Sam might have reason to think Red will usurp his title (General Ludd). Red already had a title, so why would Sam fear Red wanted to be Father as well.
3) The ballet performance of the girl dancing Swan Lake (Mako Tanida). The girl was too old to be Liz. This seems to be completely missing from this story.
4) Diane Fowler’s “truth about ‘your family’ would also be for naught (The Cyprus Agency). This truth that Red wants to know “more than anything”.
5) There is no way Katarina cares enough about Naomi/Carla to die for her. They didn’t have a relationship. Witsec happened right after Raymond was a fugitive. Raymond was a fugitive before he died and the swap was made. What deal could they have in place if they never met? Why would Kaplan call Naomi Katarina’s wife? Also how in the scenario they gave us was Naomi/Carla able to identify Agent Elizabeth Keen after 25 years?
6) Red’s “relatively normal life” he describes to Liz in 2x09. Katarina’s life was never relatively normal. Ever.
7) Red’s don’t lie policy when in 3x01 he says he’s not sure what happened to Katarina. Split sense of identity is one thing with metaphorically “death as is sometimes acceptable. “I don’t know” however, is a bald-faced lie if Katarina and Red are the same person.
8) Cape May. He apologizes to himself? Choosing to save the child over himself was that hardest choice he’s had to make rather than killing Sam? He harangues himself for fake attempting suicide?
9) Visits with Dom. Dom said Red made choices for Katarina, and then Masha. Dom said Red killed his entire family. Red wanted hints on how to survive the loss of a daughter. Red was nostalgic about Katarina and glitter. Dom said he had no right to go through her things.
10) Kaplan thought Liz would turn against Red if she found out he was her mother, not her father? Doesn’t sound like Liz to me. Also Kaplan apologizes to the K in Tanzi Farms which has to stand for Katarina. So while she is dedicated to destroying Red, she’s also apologizing to him?
11) Dembe’s not sure Liz will ever be ready to hear what Red “did to her mother.” Really, he wouldn’t think Liz was be okay learning her Mother was alive and in her life?
12) There were no burns on Katarina’s back in Requiem. There are major burns on Red’s back.
I swear if they go Rederina I will scream. It’s that simple.

“Parents don’t stay angry with their children. Or their grandchildren.”
“And that's who you are to us. It doesn't matter who you were. This is who you are and who you'll always be.” “It’s like Lipstick on a pig.” Ahhh Brimley be still my heart... Sending out a hug to Lizzington fandom. This is not a “I told you so,” post that would be mean. However this *is* and *always* has been the direction of the show since season one with a surprising twist. Was the show wrong to manipulate you guys? Yes. But at this level of you think there’s any hope or prayer for a coupling you’re not going to get it. You never were. The dynamic has always been the same- Liz/Ressler the love couple: Red/Liz father/daughter it’s complicated love story. This wasSeason 2 until Eggold’s story disrupted the flow, the pace, and greedy writers room took a surgical knife and gutted solid portions of story, left characters in limbo. It sucked. “I'm not conflicted about killing you. I'm conflicted because I can't. Because I can neither kill nor trust nor forgive.” This deep freeze will go on through Season 7. Now that Agnes is returning-Liz plans to use her inadvertently to bond with Reddington... This writing team is creating new shifty characters which I do like because they don’t change the main plot line it’s still the same. Lol “I’m a sucker forLimoges.” So am I 😊 Love seeing Red negotiating. “Are you upset? Conflicted. About what? I live and work by a very strict code built on loyalty, justice, trust. I survive because I eliminate those who betray it. Up until now, no one has been spared, not even my closest associates. Not even Kate Kaplan.” This should’ve been Red’s reaction against Liz in Season 2 after he was shot and in season 3 after he discovere Liz faked her death... but there was no fallout- just Kate getting “killed” Or is she really dead?🤔 to write the wrong of this show is to bring her back! This is key dialogue so pay attention. Key dialogue.... “So that's what you're conflicted about? Whether or not to kill me because I betrayed some "code"? You can mock it because you live in a world with institutionalized codes, where order has already been imposed by powerful forces outside of yourself, where there are laws and rules for everything. I live in a world with no laws, no rules, and certainly no order. So I have to impose my own.” Task Force and Ressler and Liz will be adopting these rules because Anna McMahon and the Cabal will Be rewriting the rules. Hey. Where have you been hiding? - What do you mean? - You've been a ghost ever since I told you that I've been looking into who Reddington was. Ahhhh sweet. Not plot driven. Ressler Missing his partner-life partner lol. The more intimate details they share, the more season 3 dialogue up till end of artax network should piss you. Off. “Thought maybe you were still pissed at me.” What? No. I'm grateful. Ressler’s heart swells three sizes with her response. Her, who knew? Oh gee not me no sireee what do I know wishful thinking right? “If anything ever happened to you I’d never forgive myself.” You did what you thought was best for me. I'm grateful for that. “IF ANYTHING EVER HAPPENED TO YOU ID NEVER FORGIVE MYSELF.” What I said earlier was true. I'm grateful that you're a good friend. But, um, I'm also grateful for what you did, for telling me about my grandfather. This means Liz has the hots literally and FEELINGS forRessler.. the Ummmms will continue. “Nothing worse than when a child disappoints-like being impaled by a unicorn.” HAHAHAHAHA!!!! Glorious. Yes Liz has pissed off her Dad! Red is so so SO disappointed with her. And here comes more KEY DIALOGUE!!! [WHISPERING] I found him, and he told me about Reddington, about who he was. Wait. You You know? His name was Ilya Koslov. He and Katarina were childhood friends, and then they were in the Cabal together. Ah childhood... “But why take on Reddington's identity?” I KNOW I KNOW!!! My lips are sealed. “After the fire, after I shot my father and the world was after Katarina, the only way for her to survive was to access the funds they used to frame Reddington.” “You are going to be SO WEALTHY.” Yeah, but they couldn't do it without Reddington. Since he was already dead, Ilya Koslov brought him back to life. That's the answer that Reddington killed people to keep quiet? - I mean, why? - I don't know. SEASON 7. To protect me somehow? To protect himself. Ilya Koslov and Katarina Rostova disappeared after betraying powerful people with long memories who were willing to kill to find out information about their whereabouts. Or try to. So guess whose the next couple to betray people with long memories? Or at least be framed thanks to Anna McMahon? Reddington will so be needed and his code of NO RULES. Welcome to the CIA. A couple of weeks ago, I got the drop on some KGB mook who had heard that I was looking into Katarina.” Yeah Ressler- you in danger babe... your bae will be freaking out and blaming herself... “IF ANYTHING HAPPENED TO YOU ID NEVER FORGIVE MYSELF.” This is KEY TO THE ENTIRE MYTHOLOGY OF THE BLACKLIST. It GOES ALL THE WAY BACK TO ANSLO GARRICK. what kind of leads I had. That's why he's keeping it a secret. That's why we can't tell anyone. Yeah, but we got to tell Cooper and ARAM. Pillow talk. How sexy. Go back to Season 2 after they bumped off Alan Fitch... Whoever he was, he is Reddington. Cooper will understand that, but he might feel obliged to tell someone in the Bureau who doesn't. KEY DIALOGUE... Anna McMahon does not trust the Task Force, and she hates Reddington. She's looking for any excuse to shut us down. Perjury, breaking the law, letting fugitives go... yeah those are causes to shutdown and assasinate everyone... that dossier is the new fulcrum. THE SHOW NEEDS LEONARD CAUL FOR THIS LEG OF STORY HELLO!! You're worried that they'll void his immunity agreement. YUP THEY WILL AMONG OTHER THINGS. Once Reddington disappears that’s the mystery isn’t it? I'm pretty sure I had the right to know the truth, and I'm absolutely sure no one else does.” Yeah NO you’re wrong. Go back to Season one and you’ll recall why. An episode featuring Diane Fowler being shot in the belly—-a house blown to smithereens. Look, I get that, but is it the truth? KEY DIALOGUE. I mean, does it make sense that this is the answer he'd kill to keep quiet? This is why what happens to Ressler is essential to understanding Reddington’s secret. That so many people have died trying to find out? It's because so many people died that I gave up my child. To protect Agnes until I learned the truth. She hasn’t learned the truth so guess who will e in danger in the finale? Except not a infant this time... Am I sure I know why he guarded his secret? No. Is it possible that I'm overlooking some of the holes in the story because there's a sweetness to it? Yes, it's possible. Rose colored glasses are cute on Liz. But it's more possible that it's true. "More possible. " Ilya Koslov had motive and opportunity. If this were a crime, you'd say it was solved, and you'd believe you were right.” Don’t it words into his mouth... Ressler’s gut instinct won’t let it go and that is a good thing. IF ANYTHING HAPPENED TO YOU ID NEVER FORGIVE MYSELF.” Hang tight. Enjoy this moment where THE WRITERS ROOM ROBBED KEENLER OF THEIR BABY AND WEDDING. If you can’t see it here compared to now... You’re fooling yourself.

For someone who hasn't seen TBL since... early season 4? (and even then only watched a couple episodes) could you give me a quick rundown of what I have to know in order to watch the beginning of season 6? If that's too much hassle I understand but I thought if anyone can put that car crash of a show into a sorta sensible summary it's you.
“car crash of a show” well, that is… too real. like you can’t help but stare and wonder what might emerge from the wreckage. :)
Thank you for the vote of confidence, I tried my best to recall the main events from each season. If something important is missing or I misremembered, hopefully somebody corrects that in a reply or a comment, and you will be able to see those, too.
(putting the rest behind a cut bc length)
S4
Alexander Kirk is the latest contestant of the increasingly crowded “who’s your daddy” competition. He was in love w/ Liz’s mom, has a life-threatening blood disorder, and a pathological fondness for kidnapping. He takes Liz and Agnes to her childhood home that triggers some vague memories of Katarina. Kirk is sure he is her father and has a DNA test to prove it. Liz also finds Katarina’s journal in which Katarina mentions how she was assigned to honeytrap Reddington.
Meanwhile, Red uses Mr. Kaplan’s connections to learn where Kirk keeps Liz and Agnes, then tips off the task force. Despite feeling betrayed by the fake death stunt, they roll out to rescue her but Kirk gets away and they take Agnes, too (they play hot potato with that poor kid). Red takes Mr. Kaplan to the woods and shoots her for her betrayal. But she survives the headshot (not unprecedented as we learn later that she survived a head injury before and has a metal plate in her head) and is nursed back to relative physical health (but apparent psychological unwellness) by a hermit in the woods. For now, nobody else knows she is alive.
Kirk is trying to find a cure. Tom and Liz keep failing in their side-mission to get Agnes back, but Red uses Kirk’s doctor to track him. This leads him to a trap but Liz tips him off just in time. This is the first time (IIRC) that Red hesitates to trust her (kinda understandable since he’s still reeling from the fake death thing) and he almost dies as a result. Then Liz lures Kirk, gets Agnes back, but Kirk collapses and is hospitalized. He needs a donor to survive. Liz volunteers bc getting answers trumps everything. Red tells her that the DNA test proving that she is Kirk’s daughter was faked and it gets confirmed bc Liz is not a match, she can’t save him. Kirk’s goons rescue him from the hospital and Liz is taken again. Red volunteers to trade places w/ her and even manages to secure the cure for Kirk to sweeten the pot. Liz is released but Kirk, now aware that he is not the father, tortures Red. He demands Red confess that he (Red) is Liz’s father, which he finally does under insane duress, then whispers sth to Kirk that convinces him to let Red go. We still don’t know what he whispered or where Kirk is now, but this is the end of the first big arc of S4.
Liz gets her FBI badge back thanks to Red applying pressure and securing a presidential pardon. She and Tom try playing house and keep failing bc Tom will never be what she wants him to be: his meek teacher cover role from S1. Red looks for and finds a new cleaning crew but what he did to Mr. Kaplan is eating at him. Dembe gets worried about his mental state and tells Liz what happened to Kaplan, which drives Liz further down the “blame Red for everything” path but they continue working together. After Kaplan recovers, her revenge mission kicks into gear and the various ways in which she tries to dismantle Red’s criminal empire is the second big arc that lasts until the end of the season.
Kaplan tries to strip Red of his resources and connections. Her methods range from clearing out his back accounts to trying to sabotage the Task Force. She goes as far as poisoning Red, for which she tries to frame Dembe to destroy their relationship but Dembe (w/ Aram’s help) proves he didn’t betray Red and their bond becomes tighter than ever. Then Mr. Kaplan unearths 86 bodies (including Diane Fowler’s, so Cooper & Co. now know Red killed her), which launches an official investigation that threatens to expose the Task Force and its ties to Red. Mr. Kaplan also meets with Liz, tells her about their past connection (in a flashback episode, we learn that she worked for Katarina as Liz’s nanny and she handed her off to Sam after the fire, then started working for Red at his request), and tries to convince her to turn on Red but Liz refuses.
Meanwhile, Ressler is trying to get justice for the murder of Fowler’s replacement, Reven. He knows Hitchen (the National Security Advisor) killed her but he has no solid proof. Mr. Kaplan reaches out to the doctor who tampered w/ Liz’s memory when she was a child, and hires him to mess w/ Ressler’s head, planting fake memories and almost driving him to kill Hitchen. He is stopped in time, the doc is captured and he tells Liz he was also hired 2 years ago to take away some of her memories again (concerning Red) at the request of a man they both know, but we still don’t know who this person is. Red denied it was him and I, for one, believe him.
Red decides to set a trap for Mr. Kaplan, playing on her blind fixation on Liz. He hires a blacklister to kidnap Liz, feeds clues to Kaplan that lead her to where Liz is kept. Red tells Liz he is willing to refrain from killing her (Kaplan) but if Kaplan doesn’t stand down, she has to die. When she walks into the trap, Red offers truce. Mr. Kaplan refuses, the FBI also shows up, there’s a shootout and Mr. Kaplan escapes. Red visits Dom bc he needs a key he hid on his property and tells him his granddaughter, Liz, is alive. Then he meets with Kaplan, offers her that key to a remote and secure paradise in exchange for ending this war but she once again refuses. The agent investigating those 86 bodies shows up but Red escapes and Kaplan agrees to testify in exchange for immunity.
Red and Ressler reach out to the blacklister who cleaned up after Hitchen and use the evidence he kept to blackmail her into scrapping the inquiry concerning the task force, Red, and those bodies. Vague national security excuse works every time. Liz reaches out to Kaplan and they go on a drive. Kaplan promises answers but Red and his men show up and she commits suicide by jumping off a bridge. Her death triggers a protocol to release Red’s secret, aka the suitcase w/ the skeleton in it, that lands in Tom’s hands but for now nobody knows he has it. Ressler visits Hitchen and accidentally kills her when they get into an argument, so he calls the blacklister that previously cleaned up after her to clean up after him now. Cooper runs a DNA test on a sample from an old bloody shirt in evidence that belonged to Reddington, compares it to Liz’s sample and tells her it’s a match. Liz tells him she ran a test too, soon after Red showed up in her life, but never checked the result bc she was afraid to know. She now confronts Red w/ the news and he neither confirms nor denies, just lets her hug him - which is their basic dynamic in the first half of the next season.
S5
Most of the first block of this season is about Red trying to rebuild his organization from scratch in various ways - first as a bounty hunter and then once again working w/ the task force. He seems to enjoy the freedom that comes w/ hitting rock bottom. Liz helps out, too, acting jarringly happy. Meanwhile, Tom decides to keep the suitcase a secret from her and asks Nik to help him identify the human remains inside. He also steals Liz’s ID to be able to access official databases and they reach out to another guy to have the bones DNA tested. Then Nik is killed when he goes to get the results and the skeleton gets taken.
Still not knowing about Tom’s involvement or the suitcase, Liz asks Red to help find Nik’s killer and Red soon discovers that Nik was working with Tom and that he had the skeleton. Tom tracks down the girlfriend of the guy who ran the DNA test to ask for help finding him. She helps, they find him, but then all of them get captured by a US Marshall named Garvey who is v much interested in the skeleton, too, bc he has a very personal ax to grind w/ Red. Tom escapes and he takes the skeleton. He calls Liz and tells her to meet at home but reveals nothing concrete, so you know he is not long for this world. That’s where Garvey and his men find them. He stabs Tom and Liz gets badly injured, too. Red and Dembe come to the rescue and take both to the hospital.
Tom dies, Liz is in a coma for 10 months and struggles a lot after she regains consciousness. She asks Tom’s mother, Scottie, to look after Agnes, makes Red promise to keep working cases with the task force and to not follow her, then moves to a remote cabin in Alaska where she saves a witness from the bad guys who want to silence him by killing them all in a Home Alone meets The Shining manner. After this, she decides to return to find out why Tom was killed and get revenge. She works this case separate from the task force.
The blacklister, Prescott, who cleaned up after Ressler last season starts blackmailing Ressler, threatening to reveal that he killed Hitchen if Ressler doesn’t derail an investigation. Ressler refuses but with Red’s help they manage to arrest Prescott who then intends to deliver on his threat. Red kills him and removes any implicating evidence. So Ressler goes to Cooper to deliver his written confession but Cooper says he will hold onto the letter as long as the task force is up and running bc none of them are who they were before, each of them has a letter like that, so to speak, but the work they do here is too important. They will hold each other accountable after it’s done.
Liz is investigating on her own. She tracks down one of Garvey’s goons and ends up killing him when they get into a fight but she also learns that Nik was helping Tom. She then dissolves the body Stewmaker-style but leaves a piece of evidence behind by accident, so she also breaks into the evidence room and steals it to cover her tracks. She draws the attention of a detective in whom she later confides about looking for Tom’s killer and even shows him the Post Office. Red helps out w/ her investigation, too, they both want the suitcase back after all. Liz confronts him about his motives (saying he only wants to keep his secret, nothing else matters) and responsibility in Tom’s death. Red tells her Tom died bc he didn’t heed his warning and that this secret is something he has to keep, so he isn’t telling.
Liz finds some notes among Tom’s belongings that eventually lead her to Dom. She doesn’t know he is her grandfather, he doesn’t tell her, but they talk. Dom denies being a spy code named Oleander (from Tom’s notes) but tells her he used to work as an analyst and came to the US after the Cold War (he really is Oleander, tho). He also tells her he knew Katarina well but doesn’t reveal their connection other than “we worked in the same building”, and he refuses to say anything about Red.
Red learns that whoever killed Tom and took the skeleton has law enforcement ties and Liz decides to rejoin the Task Force but only to up her chances at capturing Tom’s killer. This reinstatement requires a psychological evaluation and Liz goes a few rounds with Dr. Fulton who later turns out to be a serial killer killer/vigilante. Liz corners her at a crime scene but then lets her go bc she might need her help one day, and Fulton green lights her official reinstatement.
With the help of the detective she confided in, Liz finally identifies Garvey as Tom’s killer but Garvey kills the detective. They wanna take Garvey down by proving he is not only a murderer but also has ties to drug trafficking. Liz also approaches a woman Garvey keeps visiting in a diner and tells her everything, hoping she will flip on him. This is when the woman reveals she is Jennifer Reddington whom Garvey has been protecting from her father for decades. Red wants to kill Garvey but he cannot do that as long as he has the skeleton, so he kidnaps him. Then Garvey escapes and goes to the diner. Red and Dembe follow him there. Garvey shoots Red. Liz and Dembe shoot Garvey. Garvey later dies in the hospital w/o revealing anything.
While recovering, Red uses one of Garvey’s goons to track the skeleton to Costa Rica and learns that it’s in the possession of another enemy of his, Sutton Ross. Liz follows Red and wants to find the remains first. Ross is captured by the Task Force. Liz offers a secret deal and he agrees bc he was tasked by Garvey to reveal the skeleton’s secret bc Jennifer deserves to know the truth. Together they put on a show for Red: Ross escapes, takes Liz hostage and then pretends to torture her to force Red to give up his secret. Just when Red is about to break and reveal it, the Task Force storms the place and captures Ross again. Red doesn’t seem to know he has been played but he takes the skeleton, shoots Ross, then walks away. He takes the remains back to Dom’s place where he burns them. Dom warns him that Liz is not gonna give up. He is not wrong bc it is revealed that Liz was not only working w/ Ross, she now also knows the remains belong to the real Reddington, so Red is an imposter and not her father. She vows to find out his real identity and then destroy him w/ the help of her half-sister, Jennifer.
Oh and Samar and Aram’s relationship takes a few turns over the season as well. They start dating and then Aram prepares to propose, which ends in a fight and an almost break-up. Then Samar gets abducted by a blacklister and the last thing she says to Aram is that she would have said yes. She also ends up in a coma but regains consciousness at the end of the finale, so their engagement is now official.

05x19 Impostor Theory Updated
“Everything you believed for the last 30 years has been a lie. You’ve spent a lifetime hiding for no reason.” Garvey to Jennifer, Episode 05x19
This is it. This is the key line in this episode. A line that helps unlock the puzzle that is The Blacklist. So here is my current theory, that I believe many others share:
First let’s list some facts the TBL has shared with us and that we assume are true:
Liz is the daughter of Raymond Reddington and Katarina Rostova
Jennifer is the daughter of Raymond Reddington and Naomi Hyland (formerly Carla Reddington)
Jennifer says she was abandoned by her father on Christmas Eve 28 years ago
In the Pilot episode Ressler says this about Reddington: “Then in 1990, Reddington’s coming home to see his wife and his daughter for Christmas. He never arrives.” This matches exactly to what Jennifer says
Red blew up a house he used to live in after telling Luli that every day he tries to forget what happened here (01x07). Before that we see Red flashing back to memories of a little girl playing with bubbles in the yard.
Red tells Madeline Pratt the story of him going to see his family on Christmas Eve but pulling over to the side of the road because he ran out of gas. He told Madeline by the time he arrived home all he saw was blood and described what he remembered of his daughter .... (01x14)
Okay, now that we have established a few facts, let’s move forward. (Lots more below the break)
Jennifer told Liz that Garvey got her into Witness Protection to protect her from her father. (05x18). Then in (05x19) Jennifer tells Red that she is his long-lost daughter and that he abandoned her on Christmas Eve. She went on to say he became a traitor and she and her mother were sent into hiding because of him.
But Garvey had just told Jennifer that what she believed for the last 30 years was not true. She never had to hide from her father. Why? Because her father is dead. And Garvey has the bones and the DNA to prove it. Raymond Reddington is dead. Jennifer did not need to hide from anyone. So what really happened and why? Garvey sure wanted to know. We need to start with the real Reddington.
The real Reddington had a daughter (Jennifer) with his wife Carla/Naomi. He was on the fast track to become Admiral. And he became a target. The super spy Katarina Rostova was sent to seduce him and to try to gain intelligence from him. He was a mark. But along the way Katarina fell for him, and got pregnant with his baby, Masha (Liz). So indeed Jennifer and Liz are half sisters who share the same father.
Now to our Red, or impostor Red if you will. Our Red had his own family. He was also in intelligence. Used to run spies. He had a wife and daughter. And something terrible happened to them. And it happened around the same time that Masha/Liz shot her father, the night the fire occurred.
So starting with the Masha/Katarina/fire story, we know our Red was there when this happened. Liz confirmed it during her memory extraction (02x10). We also know that Liz shot her father and he died. She remembered that in (02x22) and Red confirmed it in (03x14)
Red: Your parents loved each other very much. The Cold War was hard– too hard for your father. When the Soviet Union was collapsing, he took you from her. She gave up everything to follow him, to follow you. Liz: The night of the fire– that’s what they were arguing about? Red: Your mother, despite what he’d done, she wanted him back. She wanted them to be a family. As much as it pains me to say it, he was probably… the only man she ever really loved. Liz: And I shot him. Red: It was an accident. Liz: Tell me. I need to know. Red: Your mother was never the same after that. The man she loved killed by the child she adored– it was… just too much. Two months later, she went to Cape May and left her clothes on the beach, walked into the ocean, and was never seen again. Liz: So, that night, I killed both my parents. Red: You were a child. There should never have been a gun for you to grab.
And he again confirmed it in (04x21) talking to Liz about Krilov:
Liz: I understand suppressing memories, helping someone to mute out a traumatic experience, but manipulating them? Red: The memory of an accident, a tragedy, a fire in which a 4-year-old girl killed her father. Liz: This man, is he the one who erased my memory of that night? Red: That’s how Kaplan knows him.
Back to the night of the fire (keep in mind that this happened around Christmas per Liz’s tangent memory (02x10)). Red was there. Perhaps he was Katarina’s handler and was working with her. Or perhaps he was only there to try to steal the Fulcrum. Or maybe he was there to try to kill the real Reddington himself. Katarina had said he was a bad man. (04x17) And maybe he turned traitor. And Red was sent to kill him. Or Red was just there to help Katarina and her family as her enemies were getting close. We don’t know yet. But what we do know is the Katarina got into a fight with Masha’s father that night, and Masha picked up a gun and shot her father. And per Red her father died.
Meanwhile Jennifer and her mother were waiting at home Christmas Eve for their father Raymond Reddington to arrive home. But he never got there, because he was killed by Masha. Jennifer never knew why Reddington did not show up. She thought he abandoned them. But unlike what Red talked about with his family, Jennifer and her mother were fine. So that leads us to Red’s family story....
It may be partially fabricated. Perhaps Red wasn’t delayed by running out of gas when he was going home for Christmas. If it was the same night that the real Reddington was shot our Red could have been delayed by that. We know he got burned in the fire. He may have taken Masha to Sam’s that night too. Whatever the reason, he showed up late to his family’s house, too late to save them.
It appears that Red’s family was killed (or taken - again we don’t know how much of the Madeline Pratt story is true), perhaps in retaliation for him trying to steal the Fulcrum or by allies of the real Reddington who found out Red was going after him. Or maybe Red just made a mess of things like Dom spoke about and stirred up a gigantic hornet’s nest. So maybe he doesn’t even know what really happened to his family as he and Diane Fowler spoke about (01x13)
So how and why did Red become Raymond Reddington? The how could have involved Red taking the real Reddington’s body after he died in the fire. He ending up hiding it, not reporting it. Sounds like Red had plastic surgery (01x08) that could help make him pass for Reddington. After what happened to Red’s family, he needed to hide himself in a persona that would give him power and means ($) to help guide him to the truth and most likely revenge. Whoever harmed his family is very powerful and dangerous. And as I mentioned in past blogs, he and Dembe spoke of a mission. And the mission involved him becoming Reddington.
To pull this off he needed to convince Carla/Naomi to go along with impostor Red becoming Reddington. Pretend they were married. I don’t know why she did it and went along with it - perhaps she was involved in the spy game herself and they all knew each other - Red, the real Reddington, Katarina, Dom. And maybe the mission that Red is on was something she believed in herself. Or maybe when Red told her what happened to his family, she wanted to help because part of her blamed the real Reddington for this tragedy. Or perhaps she wanted revenge herself for the death of Reddington and our Red was the conduit for that. We don’t know yet. All we know at this point is Carla/Naomi knows what Red is up to and knows that Liz is involved in this.
Which brings us to Masha. This part is even more speculative as we have not been given many clues as to Red’s true connection with her as we have with the impostor theory. So I will briefly talk about my current theory.
After the fire, Red put her with Sam to keep her hidden from the people going after her mother (and her). Sam and Red changed her name to Elizabeth (perhaps Red’s real daughter’s name. He could have used his daughter’s ID to try to hide her. Just a possibility). Red then left her life to try to build his new life as Raymond Reddington. He disappeared for a while. Red needed time become him, build his empire, make people think he is Reddington.
And Red succeeded. Everyone thinks he is the real Reddington now. And he decides to get back into Liz’s life, 25 years later. So why is Liz so important now? Why did Red get back into her life? Here’s on theory: In addition to protecting her from Tom, Red needed her for something. Remember in (03x11) Red told Liz that her mother was a secret-keeper:
Red: Katarina Rostova was a name that had been lost to history. Masha Rostova was never more than suspicion and rumor. The manhunt and the publicity it generated changed all of that. Liz: But who would care that I’m Katarina Rostova’s daughter? Red: The daughter of a legendary spymaster, the secret-keeper who disappeared– Liz: Disappeared? You and Sam told me she’s dead. Red: The secrets she took with her could compromise any number of players on that map. They’ll be coming. They’ll be coming for you. Liz: But I don’t know anything. Red: They don’t know that. You can’t walk away, Lizzy. They won’t let you.
It appears that some think these secrets were passed on to Liz. Maybe locked in her memory. Perhaps Red believes this. And maybe he believes that also locked in Liz’s memories are the answers about what happened to his family. So Red needs her. Naomi/Carla told Liz that Red needs something from her. Red himself said so too:
In (01x21) Red’s comment to Liz about needing answers to questions:
There is a lot more to this of course, particularly about Red and Liz’s connection, especially now. But at least we are able to start putting the complicated puzzle together. Episode 05x19 finally dropped a big clue about the impostor theory.
Please feel free to add your thoughts about this theory, especially about the intertwining of the two families - Red’s and the real Reddington’s and of course about the impostor theory. Thanks for reading and maybe we can get a discussion going.

If Ressler finds out Red is Katarina early... shit is gonna start to make sense for him. Not just his pregnancy test on top of his drug test, but the fact that Gale profiled Fowler’s murderer being male. While at the same time they have Herbie in show, and Siya investigating her mother’s death.

I am at a lost to who the fake Raymond reddington could be. is he a Russian agent like Katerina? also, he truly loves Elizabeth so would you not think he might be related to Elizabeth? what are your thoughts on the fake reddington?
I agree that our Red truly loves Liz. There is no question in my mind about that. I really doubt that he’s related to her in any way. His relationship with Dom strikes me as one of two men who have a long history together, but who are not relatives. His relationship with Katarina, especially as we saw it in Cape May, struck me as one of partners in terms of the way they worked together seamlessly in the field. I’ve always wondered if this is how Red seems to understand Ressler’s feelings towards Liz so well - because he once worked with her mother in a similar way. Could he be related to her father, the real Raymond Reddington? Again, I really doubt it considering Red’s treatment of the bones and his lack of meaningful interest in or affection for Jennifer. I think he knew both of Liz’s parents very well but there is no blood relationship to either of them.
I think our show has done an excellent job from the beginning of showing that the tightest bonds do not need to be familial. From the way our Task Force cares about one another, to the themes of adoption, the love that Kate and Dembe have shown towards Liz and Red. Even many of the Blacklister stories support these themes. I think our Red had a bond with Katarina at the least.
In terms of who our Red really is, I lean towards him having a background with the FBI or CIA. I keep thinking of Newton Phillips’ line in the Pilot outside FBI headquarters: “Must be good to be home again, sir.” I think Katarina was a double agent. Red spoke of her as a traitor to two countries. The Director of Clandestine Services was one of the few people who seemed to know what she looked like when he told Liz she looked like her mother. I suspect Dom was a double agent too and Red was involved in some way with both him and Katarina. In what way? I don’t know. I don’t have a fully baked theory on that. I do think our Red was responsible in some way for setting in motion the chain of events that lead to the night of the fire. Diane Fowler claimed to know the truth of what happened to Red’s family (presumably the family he raised in the Tacoma Park house), which further suggests he is American not Russian.
I continue to believe that Red must have good motives for doing what he’s done, going to the lengths he’s gone, to try protect Liz her entire life. The fact that he has the support of Dembe and Dom confirms that for me so I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and I’m excited to see the story unfold. Thanks for the ask!
