WRITERS NOTE: THIS POST IS A TWO PARTER AND WELL I HAD A LOT TO SAY, SO SORRY FOR THESE TWO LONG POSTS ABOUT A LOST KATAMARI MMO PART 1 Okay so…I have had this in the back of my mind for far too long. Along with not really touching this topic in the past, I’ve made exceptions like small mentions that this thing existed. “What's the topic at hand?” you might ask? It's Katamari Online. AKA, the South Korean exclusive Katamari mmo, Also known as that one Katamari lost media that everyone seems to be on the hunt for after all of these years. Okay, so where do I start with this lost media, well Maybe I should just start off with the basics ie the time frame of the MMO's popularity, how it worked, and how it died out to obscurity. I don't wanna go on and on too much about a lot of things about the MMO itself since there are some things i want to touch on and talk about as well, regarding my thoughts and feelings. If you want to learn more about this game itself, it's in the Katamari Wiki so please check it out. So basically, what I can say about this game is that it’s basically like Club Penguin or Animal Jam, but its Katamari, like an extension to the online hub on Beautiful Katamari (in simplest terms). However, if you want the long story, Katamari Damacy Online was a Korean-exclusive MMO developed by Cyberstep and published by Windysoft/JUNEiNTER. It lasted from 2007 to 2012, which for most, MMOs don’t last too long. There was a lot of stuff that made this game different than most Katamari games. Like for example: There’s a dating feature (put a pin in that���I'm gonna get to that later), you can choose any cousin/cosmic you like (but you can't make your own cosmic person), and then you have the many new and different quests/levels to choose from.

Now, you're probably thinking: “Whoa, that sounds hella neat! Was it available in other countries?" Well no.. it wasn’t... Like I said before, it was South Korea-exclusive, soo… yeah sorry everyone else. This is kind of an odd choice in my opinion, and I could be wrong (please feel free to correct me on this) but like, at the time Katamari was hella niche, even more niche than before. I could understand a Katamari game that's only exclusive in its place of origin, like for example how the Tomodachi Collection for the Nintendo DS was Japanese-exclusive. That’s not odd. However, something like Katamari Damacy Online being exclusive to just South Korea and only South Korea is an odd choice because again, Korea isn't its place of origin. Then again, maybe at that time there were more Katamari fans in Korea than in Japan, so that could be the case.

state of the Hazel: not doing too great. general summertime sadness combined with a recently passed cat of mine is not great for the mind. i'm gonna miss that big dope.

i'm getting a good sense for how i'm also feeling gameways, though it ain't much good news. getting back into Persona is feeling rough because i feel like i "have to" play it more than i "want to" play it, generally never great. i still really want to have played it and post the clips here, but given the whole moderation issues of this site, it feels like there's added pressure to do it before it's too late, whether or not "too late" is something i actually need to worry about.

as for more immediate issues, sticking to just Splatoon for so long is getting me into burnout phases. i can understand why, in the past few years, i've usually finished at least one or two pokemon monotype runs by August, maybe visit another game for a good while, but i've done neither this year.

i think playing a new game is probably the best way to get out of this funk right now, though. precisely, i think something i never posted here could work best, to help enjoy the posting process a little bit more too.

i did a whole shopping list in the tags sitting on this, but that'll do for this one. give myself a little time with something new, should be be fine.

Cool Announcements Wow!!!

Good afternoon friends and followers!! I'm sorry for the severe lack of art lately, but there are two things that I'm really excited to share with you all!! So lets just dive straight in!! To begin, I'm incredibly excited to announce that I am going to be a page contributor for @we20vekatamari, a Katamari Damacy fanzine celebrating the series' 20th anniversary!! Everybody has been working incredibly hard, and I'm super excited for you all to see what we've been cooking up! Speaking of games having big milestone birthdays; did you know that Yume Nikki will also be celebrating its big 20th this June? Yume Nikki is one of my favorite games, and I'm sure by now a lot of you have noticed all of my 2kki ynoproject screenshots! @ynoproject is in the process of creating its very own Yume Nikki fangame called Collective Unconscious, and I'm lucky enough to share with you all that I'm going to be creating some worlds for the game! My worlds are likely to not be in the very first releases of the game, but keep your eyes peeled!! I'll probably drop a couple of sneak peeks of what I'm cooking up in the following months, so be on the lookout for those as well!! That's just about all for now! Thanks for reading!!

exploited me for art (made me feel pressured into making art for a rp we were doing as i have a hard time saying no & only made a half-assed apology THAT WASNT EVEN AN APOLOGY in her twitter thread acknowledging what shes been exposed for, though saying sorry after iirc though that was probably ingenuine considering her acknowledgement of it in the twitter thread.)

reposting my art without permission (relating with what happened above this, a few months later after the rp we did she reposted an animatic i did for it ON HER OWN YOUTUBE CHANNEL WITHOUT MY PERMISSION WHATSOEVER AFTER ID ALREADY ACKNOWLEDGED I DONT WANT HER TO ASSOCIATE WITH ME AGAIN.)

Alright, So, remember I’d mentioned the dating feature in this game? Yeah, there's a dating feature. Now, you might be wondering why that is? Well… I'm not sure myself, but I do know that due to the female player-base of the game, they had decided to add a dating feature so that way couples can be “boyfriend” and “girlfriend.” That's cute and all, however, ,it's only for hetero couples and not same-sex couples. So if you wanted to have a same-sex couple in your Katamari MMO, yeeaah…sorry they don't do that. Which, again, is rather odd since the player base was majorly female.

Oh yea, and speaking of players, let's talk about the cosmics and Cousins! Okay, so before I share my disappointment about the avatar features, I just wanna say something about all of the new cousins and cosmics and their designs: Honestly, I really like them a lot! I think most of you have already seen Mint and Melo, But i think my biggest surprise was Burda. Now I’m gonna tell you why Burda is so special, like no joke: Burda's the only black cosmic person here! I’m not kidding! Like, it really shocked me when I had first heard about her awhile back since Korea and Japan have a habit of not showing decent black representation, let alone having characters with darker skin without being racially insensitive.

(Korea, Japan, and most South Asian culture have an obsession with skin bleaching) I know in most media nowadays, things have gotten better. But for its time, having Burda as a black girl in a South Korean MMO Katamari game is really something. I'll probably talk about Burda in another post because this one's long enough. Okay, so, yeah I love these newbies and all their quirks but what made me feel disappointed about this MMO? Well, there's a lack of customization features.!Yes, I know you can give them little hats and whatnot, but that's not what I’m talking about. Like—Don't get me wrong, all of the Cousins and cosmics—both new and old—are neat. However, what really bugs me is how there's no option to make your own original character. Like, idk man…that's a lost opputinty here. I’m gonna use fer.al and even Roblox as examples. With Fer.al and Roblox, along with most other MMOs, the appeal is that you can make your own character and make up your own story. With Fer.al, you can make your own creature and design them the way you want. And if I'm gonna be completely honest, I feel like Katamari Damacy Online should at LEAST give you the choice to choose The Prince, any of the Cousins, or get creative with it and make your own character. Idk, I felt like they lost me on that.

Now, I’m gonna say that with some of the mapping and hub designs, I personally really like this bit of world-building. I know it's not a lot—but dang it! I’ll take what I can get! Now, for my harsh truth about my feelings on this lost media: Yeah, I can understand why I didn't care for it that much when I first found out about it. If I’m gonna be honest, I thought it would be gone forever and it didn't matter. Along with the fact that for a long time, I didn't really see it as canon, so I just didn't put much attention to it. However, after revisiting it again and really thinking about it a bit more, I felt like there was a lot of lost potential even with how questionable some of these choices were. Overall, I now have an open mind to this and I hope that this game will be found soon. Who knows, maybe one of the archivists might finally find the surviving installer and might turn it into a Katamari Damacy Online rewritten type beat! Also folks, if I missed anything or messed up, please feel free to let me know.
