Now that you've read all three Yvain, Owain and Iwein... Which one do you like most? (or what parts of each scratch your brain the right way?) 👀
Hi friend!
Oh this is gonna be tough...each one has its charms! I can definitely say Iwein is the weakest of the three. While Hartmann von Aue's writing is funny, the narrative over all is plainly an inferior version of Chrétien de Troyes's Yvain. I acknowledge that Hartmann went in specifically adapting an existing story for his German audience, that's a feature not a bug, and he did so successfully! It's not bad. It just gets a little....repetitive.
Tumblr media
I love that Hartmann named more women than his predecessors. (Such as the lady who restores Iwein from his madness, named the Lady of Narison.) Hartmann's Arthur and Guinevere were very sweet as well. This is adorable. Perhaps my favorite aspects of his work is his Arthur.
Tumblr media
I just wouldn't reach for Hartmann over the Mabinogion or Chrétien, personally. One detail about the Mabinogion I love is that the cure to Owain's madness is a treatment for his heart.
Tumblr media
Chrétien treats Yvain's brain, and the damsel is actually chastised for treating his full body lol
Tumblr media
I also like that Yvain is recognized by his face scar, which Hartmann carried over for Iwein as well. Mabinogion didn't have that but I still like that one a lot and favor that spelling of the character's name.
Thanks for the ask! (Not me saving this to my drafts and forgetting to publish....sorry buddy!)

19, 26 and 27 for the band ask thing ☺
19. Which band position is the hottest- vocalist, drummer, guitarist, bassist?
Tumblr media
I WANNA SAY ALL OF THEM??? like they each got their own little magic for me to be heart eyes over (plus them just getting lost in the music, I love that) jdksbsnbs
26. Out of these decades, which had the greatest bands- 60s, 70s, 80s or 90s?
AAHHHH definitely the 70s and 80s, not only for like, American and British music (mostly I've been in a classic rock kick, shocker!) But for Latin American bands that I love as well!
27. Similarly, which decade had the worst bands- 60s, 70s, 80s or 90s?
Don't do this to me, I don't wanna say, because all of my favorite bands came out during these decades hdjshaghah

Tagged by @afoxnamedmulder (thank you!) to share 9 books I want to read in 2025 ✨
Tagging @kashilascorner, @lesamis, @balkanballad, and @fairyhagmother (if you want to answer, of course)
Notes on each book, which I didn't have to do but wanted to:
The Island of the Day Before by Umberto Eco - I had no idea it existed until recently, but someone left it in the bookcrossing cabinet we have set up at work (I'm so curious as to who left this one, Pratchett, and Ursula Le Guin among all the crime novels of varying levels of quality), so now it's waiting for its turn on my bookshelf, and I think I'm gonna pick it up next as soon as I finish The Left Hand of Darkness.
Books of Blood Vol. 2 by Clive Barker - I'm actually planning to read all the volumes I haven't read yet, that is, all of them except the first and the fifth ones. I started with the fifth one to read the short story Candyman (1992) is based on and found the entire collection so interesting that it made me wanna read the rest.
Jaufre: An Occitan Arthurian Romance - no idea what it's gonna be, I just saw a hilarious excerpt from it on Tumblr and decided I should read it.
Lays of the Round Table by Ernest Rhys - another find on the Arthuriana Tumblr <3 I don't read nearly enough poetry, so it feels like a good pick.
The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas - I decided to reread it while I was watching the new adaptation. It's been at least 15 years since I read it, so in many ways it's probably going to be like reading a new book I've head a lot about. Quite excited for this.
One Piece Novel Heroines Vol. 2 by Jun Esaka - apparently both volumes are to be published in English next year, but I've already read the first one in French. Looking forward to it - the first volume was very sweet, and the second one is going feature some of my favourite girls; I'm particularly excited for Tashigi and Reiju's stories.
Lady Chatterley's Lover by D. H. Lawrence - for no other reason than I keep stumbling upon various mentions of it lately and it makes me go "this might be a sign I should read it".
The Bird's Nest by Shirley Jackson - Jackson is one of the best, god-I-wish-I-wrote-like-that writers that I've read, and it's high time I let myself be disturbed by another book of hers.
Winter's Gifts by Ben Aaronovitch - another desperate attempt to keep up with this series; every time I think I've read all the books in it, it turns out that, in fact, there's more.
Not pictured: two books by two friends getting published next year <3 I've read both of them already, but owning and rereading a physical copy is gonna hit different. Can't post the cover for one of them because it hasn't been officially announced yet (but I've already seen it because I'm VIP like that) and the other I haven't seen yet, but if any Russian-speaking followers of mine are reading this, keep an eye out for the "Нарушители" cycle by Yelena Yadrenceva and "Хэллгейт: семья" by Astash :)

I don't know if you know about the movie Penelope (2006), but it sounds up your lane! It's about this girl who is cursed so her face is like a pig snout. Very Ragnelle coded! It's been over a decade since I watched it, but iirc it was pretty sweet
YESSS!!!!! I haven't watched in a long time but I remember she used to wear a scarf over her face which worked since she had big beautiful eyes. The pipeline is literally...
Ragnelle > Penelope > Chappell Roan

1, 2, 17 and 24 fot the book ask 🥰
Howdy! Thank you for the ask @kashilascorner!!
How many books did you read this year?
IF I can remember, I only read 2 books since I got a bit busy 2022, but they were definitely worth the read! "Of Crowns and Legends" and "The Witch's Heart"!
2. Did you reread anything? What?
I reread "The Shining Company" by Rosemary Sutcliff! It's such an amazing book!
17. Did any books surprise you with how good they were?
Of Crowns and Legends made me cry, I got really emotional at the end, and was not expecting all those twists.
24. Did you DNF anything? Why?
The reason is the bane of my existence when it comes to reading, but...time
I DNF...
A River Enchanted by Becca Ross
Hall of Smoke by HM Long
The Lost Queen by Signe Pike
Time and Chance by Sharon Kay Penman
and lots of others

I can't get ennough of your Orkney Girls vignettes, they are so good!
Thank you so much!  I’m a little stalled right now because I need to finish the Maleagant section in a way that isn’t just “Gowain and Gracia reduce him to a flat cartoon silhouette” (don’t want to steal Lancelot’s big moment)...

Idk if you already spoke about this but here I go. I was not following DC for a while so I knew about Rebirth and all, but it's now that I am reading some stuff. Are you following any of the new series? If so, do you recommend any? :) I have a feeling that people are enjoying Rebirth much more than they did with the New 52, and I'm curious about your opinion
Hello! Unfortunately I am very behind on Rebirth so I can’t recommend much for it--I’m actually really, really behind on all current comics! I had some unexpected things occur in the past few months and it distracted me from my comic reading. So far what little I have read I like far more than New 52, but I should mention that I’m very biased because I strongly disliked most of New 52 save for a few arcs like The Court of Owls and Endgame.
However, there is one that I started reading that is very good that I definitely recommend! It’s called Batman: White Knight and so far the story has featured Joker having a sort of weird redemption arc after being forced by Batman to violently ingest numerous psychiatric medications and he becomes Gotham’s “White Knight” to rid the city of Batman. The art is gorgeous too! :D

21 and 30 for the movie ask ☺️
Hi! I answered 21 here but....
30. Feel Bad/Depressed
Tumblr media
That's like all of them....Excalibur (1981) seems to be my answer for everything but in this case I mention it because the characters really were on top of the world, all good people, and it makes you really feel the fall of Camelot more keenly than some other potential answers. (Such as Sword of Lancelot (1963) in which Arthur never seems to full understand Guinevere and the writing is on the wall about how it'll go, it makes it less depressing because some part of you wants to see change.) Going to recommend BBC The Legend of King Arthur (1979) for the same reason, everyone is nuanced and interesting and doing their best (for good or evil lol) but still they fall victim to the machinations of a handful, and that makes the crumble of greatness hurt more. Helps they both show Arthur from his conception to his death, so you come to really attach yourself to him, and his downfall hits hard. This one opens with Morgan losing her family, features 4 Orkney brothers (Gawain, Agravaine, Gareth, and Mordred), and has a really great depiction of Bors and Lancelot. So you get love and loss from a multitude of characters and not just the love triangle. The tragedy is tragic!
Thanks!
