10. Dr. Robotnik's Ring Racers (Kart Krew, 2024)

I could probably talk for hours about this one, too (another video idea, perhaps), but I'm gonna try and put this as simply as I can:

This is the greatest kart racer ever released.

Dr. Robotnik's Ring Racers is the followup to 2021's Sonic Robo Blast 2 Kart, and while the previous game definitely turned some heads when it released, it was a relatively bare-bones experience. Ring Racers, on the other hand, might just be the most content-rich game in its genre. With over 200 consistently well-designed maps (split between race tracks and battle arenas) and over 50 playable racers from Sonic and other Sega franchises, an engaging Grand Prix mode with a uniquely Sonic-styled ranking and special stage system, a Smash/Air Ride-style challenge board full of unlockables, custom color palettes to collect, plenty of secrets to uncover, and the return of time trials, online multiplayer, and mod support, this may just be the last kart racer you'll ever need (it's also absolutely gorgeous with its vibrant pixel art style and sports an incredibly fitting soundtrack comprised of a mix of new material and tracks repurposed from other media).

Density of content is great, but a truly great kart racer is nothing without strong gameplay. Thankfully, Ring Racers is blessed with some incredibly deep, nuanced, and rewarding skill-based mechanics. The central ring boost system, for example, isn't just a "go fast" button that'll blast you ahead of the competition; rather it's a versatile tool to be used strategically to maintain your speed while going up slopes or recover from nasty spinouts, and recognizing when it makes more sense to burn your rings vs when it makes more sense to save them for later is paramount to a stellar performance. This same give-and-take philosophy applies to everything from drifting to items to character stats. Mechanics like this may be a turn-off for some, as it's got a far steeper learning curve than most in its genre (I strongly recommend playing through the entire tutorial and reading through digital manual for good measure or you will get smoked) but the satisfaction that comes from mastering its intricate risk-and-reward systems is absolutely unparalleled.

This game has handily dethroned Crash Team Racing: Nitro Fueled as my favorite kart racer; it is an absolute triumph in the genre. It feels like the developers have truly captured the essence of classic Sonic in kart racing form, both aesthetically and mechanically. As excited as I am for the upcoming official title, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, it's going to need some pretty unique defining mechanics if it's going to coexist with Ring Racers whenever I need a racing fix. Play it. Right now.

New guilty pleasures, new all time favorites, and an alternative new genre that matches the fun of platformers for me!

Sorachi's Character Pack for Dr. Robotnik's Ring Racers

Over the past two months I've been working on porting over my SRB2Kart characters to Dr. Robotnik's Ring Racers, and all 10 of them have been fully ported and approved for release!

Everyone has been adjusted to drive the new karts and have received lots of little improvements, with Asha and Pepelogoo also receiving a complete resprite! You can download them in the link below!
