Your name is KARKAT VANTAS and you're currently dressed in all black with a balaclava over your face like the rest of your friends, even if Tavros isn’t sure about this.

“I’m not sure about this, guys,” Nitram says from the bush he’s hiding. You’re all hiding behind some bushes right now, so he’s not special. You’re doing a stake out at the entrance of the most prestigious private school on the Prospit side of town- Felt Preparatory Academy.

The building is fancy as hell- Brick walls, a bright green and white color palette, ornamental metal gates at the entrance- it makes you feel sick. It makes you even sicker to think about the stupid people who go here, who believe they’re so much better than you just because none of them attend public school. They've all conveniently forgotten that their school fell below yours in the state examinations ranking ever since your boyfriend started to tutor most of the years below you.

Karkat Vantas was the leader, and no one dared question that.

His shadow was long and large, far bigger than what his big, hulking body would seem to cast, and it silenced all who fell under it as he walked the meteor halls. He heard Kanaya pause, the clacking of her keyboard ceasing as he passed. He could feel her weary gaze on his back as he passed, causing him to glance over. Immediately, Kanaya went back to her keyboard, probably to pester that Rose human she'd grown so attached to.

Karkar locked eyes with the Scourge Sisters as they came into view, noticing how their banter immediately silenced as they noticed him. Vriska's proud smirk wavered under his glare and the calculating look in her eyes was unquestionable. He saw how Terezi's hand went to the hilt of her cane when he stopped, blade at the ready. He had no doubt they would try to take him if they thought they needed to, they just weren't sure if they could.

"Keeping out of trouble, Serket?" He asked pointedly, his loud, harsh voice echoing off the walls.

Vriska dis that proud hair swipe, as if dismissing him, but the gesture was forced. "Oh, come on. It feels like haven't talked to Tavros for sweeps. You can't blame me if I wanted to catch up with an old friend."

Karkat's glaring red eyes darkened a shade. Terezi sniffed the air and quickly nudged Vriska's shoulder. She coughed and crossed her arms. "But, uh, to answer your question, no. I haven't done anything to Tavros or John or whoever while you were gone."

Karkat nodded and shoved past them, making a point of shoulder bumping Vriska.

The next group came up on his left. Seated right outside the door were Gamzee and Tavros, playing a few rounds of fiduspawn most likely. Yet again, they immediately silenced as they saw him. Tavros hunched back and Gamzee wrapped an arm around him, protectively.

Karkat paused as looked at them, lost in thought.

Despite being the same caste, Karkat and Gamzee seemed to be polar opposites. Gamzee was the "failure", Karkat was the "success". Karkat was raised by his lusus to be a proper purpleblood, while Gamzee was hardly raised at all. Karkat understood that lowbloods were his toys, his underlings to do with as he pleased, and he'd permanently stained a good many sweaters embracing that fact back on Alternia. Meanwhile, here Gamzee was hanging out with the one member of their team that didn't see him as a joke.

Karkat should look down on him, but all he felt was envy as Tavros shrank towards Gamzee in a fit of silent trust.

Karkat was drawn from his musings by Aradiabot rudly shoving past him without a word. He saw Sollux flinch behind her, tightly gripping her hand as he muttured a "Sorry". Karkat wondered if Sollux ever heard his own voice when he saw him, but quickly decided against it. Sollux was cool, funny in the way lowbloods were supposed to be if they wanted to keep their heads... before Sollux had found out his blood color anyways.

"Hey, bro, do you need something? You're kinda blocking the door." Gamzee asked calmly. Not politely, just calmly. He wasn't going to be polite to someone who was terrorizing his "Tavbro" right that moment. It was always weird to hear coming from the chill clown.

"Just don't hog all the faygo."

Karkat shoved open the door, taking a second to see how everyone looked at him. Eridan and Equius predictably froze as soon as they saw him, quickly turning to pretend they hadn't noticed. It was the girls in here that reacted strangely. They were the only two who weren't afraid of him.

Feferi glared at him from her seat, fist tightening around her tridant as she locked eyes with the "highblooded bully". Karkat scrolled his gaze past her. He wasn't in the mood to waste time on another brawl with her, even if she was always in the mood to try kicking his ass.

Thankfully, Nepeta was, as always, much happier to see him.

"CARKITTY!"

Karkat squaked as Nepeta pounced on him, nearly bowling him over with a tackle hug. Karkat had to keep himself from smirking, even as Equius sputtured out apologies in the background.

It made sense that Nepeta, at least, liked him. She was used to hanging around strong, scary highbloods.

Still, Karkat forced his scowl back on and hefted Nepeta over his shoulder, marching over to Equius and dropping her in his lap.

"I believe this belongs to you, Zahhak."

Nepeta stuck out her tongue. "Maybe if Clowncat wasn't such a sour puss, AC would stop tackling him."

Again, Karkat bit down a smile. "Not my fault. It's hard to be funny with Zahhak hanging over your shoulder. Get him to lighten up first, then we'll talk sour."

And with that, Karkat turned and marched over to his laptop, sitting down and letting out a sigh. Nepeta didn't even let him open it before she drapped over his shoulder.

"Don't be like that. Something's wrong. You haven't sworn at me ten times yet."

Equius cleared his throat. "Highblood... as... out of line as it may be for her to bother you... I think she has a point. You're usually far more... verbose with her... and me.. at this point."

Karkat halfheartedly glared over his shoulder. Was it really that obvious? Who else had noticed? Fuck, he couldn't lose his touch like this. He needed to be scary to keep these idiots in line. How else was he supposed to take back their Messiah given reward from those stupid blasphemous monkeys?

Karkat kept his glare and, seeing Nepeta completely unwavering, sighed again. "Alright. What did you have in mind?"

Nepeta fist pumped into the air, doing a little dance as Karkat watched, bemused. She nearly yanked him off his feet as she grabbed him, dragging him towards the teleporter.

"So, about your Krabsona..."

"Oh, Messiahs help me..."

"Nope! No backing out! You're in my domain now mowtherfucker!"

As the confused seadwellers watched them leave, Karkat couldn't help letting his smile slip. The Messiahs wouldn't cull him if he slipped out of his role for one night, would they?
