Over the weekend I went to Kariotahi Beach this was only the first time that I have been down to this beach as the time I did come here I didn’t even get down to the water because it was only for a quick visit/stop. A friend of mine who loves the beach took me today and she said that she loves this beach so much and the beauty of it is stunning. We took her dog there and was able to enjoy the sun and soak up all the beauty in which this black sand beach has to offer. I think going there and kind of seeing what it was like has interested me more into coming back here and talking to people, cleaning up and seeing how we as a human race can keep it and conserve its beauty. I didn’t take too many photos, I think I wanted to just enjoy the beach because we had planned to go there before this assignment came out.

Update from New Zealand 7

Thursday 12th December 2019

This week has been a busy one. And jeepers time is going fast! Way to fast. I feel the busier you are the fast time goes and this has seriously been busy. I haven’t even had time to go running! (although that definitely gets kicked off the priority list as soon as something better comes up!).

So Jasper has been staying with us so it has been Kate and Jamie on babysitting duties! Monday, I woke up, checked my emails and freaked out. Dougal has been telling all the clients that I am back and am relatively free so can get jobs turned around really quickly, unfortunately when that is told to everyone and they all come back the same day, I am one busy girl! I think I got six that morning and eek all of a sudden my carefree holidaying self was in stress mode and had a heap to do. I got myself sorted though and spent the morning doing site visits which was good and then Jamie and Jasper met me at Cathys house where we all enjoyed the pool for the afternoon. I am getting very good at putting stress out of my mind (where usually I would just fixate on it until it is done) so I had a very enjoyable afternoon. Cathy has an incredible pool, like the top of the range, no expenses spared, and Jasper loved it. She has a swimming jet thing - I think its called an infinity lane or something, it essentially is a massive jet that maintains a constant speed so you can continuously swim against it. It has a speed range from 1 to 100, and Cathy says she comfortably swims at speed 37 to give a rough idea. Jasper had great fun fighting the current and increasing the speed, I think get got up to about 80 before he was pressed against the end of the pool and had lost his togs! Jamie being the good big cousin that he is quickly fished the togs out and threw them just out of reach! Jasper lesson of the day he said, was to never go too extreme in other peoples pools! Monday night, Jamie went out so after a few more hours hanging at the pool, Jasper and I headed home, I wrote up a few jobs, Jasper played on his IPad beside me and then we had yummy burgers for tea!

Tuesday was about the same, I worked in the morning while Jasper slept in and we waited for Jamie to come home for physio, when Jamie did eventually come home he was quite tired after his night out as the injury definitely takes a lot of his energy. So I took Jasper on my site visits, he actually really enjoyed it, he was a good little scribe for me and was super helpful. We went home for a little bit and then headed to pick up one of my good uni friends Tim. He came over for the afternoon and night, it was so lovely to catch up with him. I am loving seeing all my friends again! We headed out to Kariotahi beach, which is a beautiful black sand beach, Jasper loved it and Tim and I enjoyed relaxing in the sun and gossiping! The sand was so warm, like literally lying on an electric blanket, plus the sunshine we were boiling! We had a good swim in the sea and then washed off the salt in the waterfall! Once we were back home, Tim and I sat out with punch on the deck and enjoyed the sunshine! Honestly, it was such a good catch up and I am blessed to have friends like him.

Wednesday was the Tilsley Christmas work doo! I went into work early to get some jobs printed and sent out and then I picked mum up and we headed into Bracu for our Christmas lunch! It was a beautiful day, the food was delicious and we spent a lovely few hours wineing and dining. Bracu is a beautiful destination, the grounds are lovely, the restaurant is stunning, its truly an experience (which has a price tag - but hey work was paying!). We all had a nice afternoon. I had salmon and tuna for the entree, duck for the main, and an apple cheesecake for dessert! I felt very embarrassed about taking photos of the food for you all so I hope you appreciate it! It did look very pretty though! In the afternoon, I caught up with Tom one last time before he heads down south. Its sad that this month has gone so quickly and I have only seen him twice and it is already time to say goodbye but regardless I know I have a good friend in him and was glad we had the time to catch up on each others lives! We went out to grab a bite, I was too full from lunch so just had a side salad and then we watched a super cute movie about New Zealand! Another late night, but well worth it when I can catch up with friends.

Reflection

After the second week of doing this assignment, I am starting to be more interested in certain areas of the water. I have lived in areas near the Manukau Harbour for my whole life from when I was in the first house I lived in I was literally right next to the water in Wattle Downs, to now where I live not too far from a few beaches such as Kariotahi and Clarks Beach. So after seeing Sarah’s interest in using the Manukau Harbour for her work, I started to realize its importance to me and the relationship I have with the water. I went to Kariotahi a few days ago in order to experience it because it has been there for the 7 years I have lived here and I have never been once. As someone who doesn’t really like going to the beach, I think now I have found my love for it this year. I want to look at the relationship in which the water or the Manukau Harbour has on people and how they feel when they are in the water and at the beach. This leads to ideas of conservation and making sure that the waterways are clean in order for us to maintain and be able to have these beautiful beaches in order to swim at an appreciate. From now until this assignment pitch is due in a week, I am only going to be focussing on this and making sure that I have put in all the hours needed. As someone who has a visual arts background and context, I think some of my hours will be done through my practice. Especially at looking at the way in which the beaches are, cleaning up as I am there, producing images and collecting moments from the water which relate to me and relate to others as well.
